Ferguson Police Officer Darren Wilson Resigns, Hopes His "Resignation Will Allow The Community To Heal"
Days after Ferguson was torched by angry rioters following a grand jury verdict not to indict police officer Darren Wilson in the shooting death of Michael Brown, the policeman's lawyer announced moments ago that he has resigned from the Ferguson, Mo., Police Department.
As ABC reports, Wilson has been on administrative leave since the shooting. One of his attorneys, Neil Bruntrager, said the resignation is effective immediately.
Though Wilson was cleared of criminal charges by the grand jury, the Justice Department is conducting a civil rights investigation into the shooting as well as a separate probe of police department practices. Wilson, who has been in seclusion since the fatal shooting, said this week in an interview with "Good Morning America" anchor George Stephanolpoulos that he had gotten married since the Aug.9 shooting and that he and his new wife are expecting a baby.
Wilson's resignation is unexpected because in that interview he announced that wanted to spend his career with the police force, and hoped to one day be promoted to sergeant. "I wanted to stay on the road for 30 years and then retire as sergeant and have a retirement," Wilson said. "That's all that I wanted."
But he said that after what happened, he was not sure he could return to the Ferguson Police Department. He was a member of the department for six years. "I'm not sure it's possible. I mean, you think they would accept me? You think it'd be safe for me?" Wilson asked.
He said his notoriety could also put his fellow officers in jeopardy, and asked: "Can I put them in that situation?"
Though in the interview he said he had not made a final decision on returning to the force, he offered some thoughts on what else he might want to do.
"I would love to teach people. I would love to give more insight on … into the use of force and anything I can," he said. "Anything that I can get out of this career I've had so far and of the incident, I would love to give to someone else."n is unexpected
Wilson's full resignation letter is below:
"I, Darren Wilson, hereby resign my commission as a police officer with the City of Ferguson effective immediately. I have been told that my continued employment may put the residents and police officers of the City of Ferguson at risk, which is a circumstance that I cannot allow. For obvious reasons, I wanted to wait until the grand jury made their decision before I officially made my decision to resign. It was my hope to continue in police work, but the safety of other police officers and the community are of paramount importance to me. It is my hope that my resignation will allow the community to heal. I would like to thank all of my supporters and fellow officers throughout this process."

I'm not buying it that Mr. Wilson did something wrong, based on the evidence in this case. That's not to say that in a macro sense their isn't an excessive militarization of the police, and that they are often too agressive. I think more people should seperate the two.

The shop owner would have had a reason to shoot Brown in the heat of the moment, and I would not have cried over it if he had because Brown placed himself in that danger at that time, but the cop was being a rabid control freak, one had nothing to do with the other. mr lillas' text falls apart when he cites the on-video evidence that the store owner says wasnt brown - so this was not determined by an evidentiary hearing, this was a couple cops deciding that guy looked enough like brown - after the beehive was already on alert and looking for a confrontation, after mr wilson dispensed his "justice."
this was established with the same level of confidence as the ar-15 in sandy hook that never existed and became a convenient meme when officer vance would not specify what type of "long gun" was in the trunk.
sorry mr lillias, I do not support the authorities' ability to modify aspects of a situation ex post facto. brown laid on the ground 4 hours while these schmoleys worked to figure out what their story was and the multitude of stories told from "witnesses" is perfectly reflective of that.
to do the further disservice of treating a grady jury like it is an actual jury trial is beyond the pale, further evidence that "justice" works how the authorities deem it should work, and when it needs "modifications" then it can be done without anyone seeing or needing to know what that modification was.
I have a gun permit. I have some training, but not enough, more is always better. What they train us to do is to keep shooting until they are dead, if you think your life is threatened. The thing of it is, if your life is threatened, the fear response can grab you and make you do things that are not so smart. So when you train, while you are not under threat, you do so to get the motor memory of what you need to do to live if you are threatened.
Before I was acclimated to gun culture, I know I would have agreed with you. Unless he outright lied (and I am open to it he may have, this is why I use the words "probably a good shooting") he did what he was trained to do, put down a threat. You don't ask yourself after each bullet if that is enough. You do not "wing them," so much of the time they keep coming for you. If you have made the evaluation that your life, or someone else's life is threatened, you go all in. Lethal force and you go home and they don't.
Response is supposed to be proportional. You don't shoot if someone is yelling at you. You would not normally shoot if someone hit you, actually. That is where the doubt can come in here. Did the cop over read how much danger he was in? If I am an old lady and three of you men verbally threaten to hurt me, I am okay to cap all three of your asses. My belief that my life is threatened is reasonable in that situation. We can question if the cop interpreted the punches to his face and the fighting they did with his gun as evidence that Brown was able to kill him. If Mike Brown was white, I don't think we would have seen this go to a grand jury.
Gun training changed a lot for me. I am more grounded and have more respect for many things than I used to. I have watched gun training turn thug wanna bes into young men. They stand up straighter and stop fooling around by the time they leave the training. They are adults. They are responsible. It works like that.

Good post, but unless you're referring to military action, I believe the correct phrase is "until the threat is terminated".
If you are unfortunate enough to land in a courtroom after a shooring, one of the things you do not want to say is that you kept shooting the perp "until he was dead". You, the armed citizen, fired until you no longer perceived a threat.
what punches? Given Brown's size and strength, the pics do not at all reflect the kind of inuries one would expect.

What if he decided to jack a car to get away while the cop waits for backup?

Brown leaves, but then when he sees Wilson following him, he comes back to "finish the job." Wilson unloads his gun. Some hit, some don't. Wilson has nightmares and other shit to sort out. PTSD. No one will breathe a breath about this.
I don't want to be defending a bad cop. This guy may be a bad cop for all I know. If I follow the story he tells, he did the right thing and he is going to pay the rest of his life for it, before the justice system, before his employment opportunities and money run out, etc. He may be alive, but I am not sure how he is going to live.
