It is more like "capitalism". make people buy stuff that they don't really need and then throw them away so they buy some more and capitalist keep getting richer.
Peak Storage Units......holy crap, have you ever helped your buddy move out of one of those? They're paying $150-$300 per/month to store a bunch of crap that you couldn't yard sale for $400.
But this... this sound wasn't sad. Why... this sound sounded glad. Every Who down in Whoville, the tall and the small, was singing, without *any* presents at all! He hadn't stopped Christmas from coming, it *came*! Somehow or other... it came just the same.
And every piece of stuff brings slightly less joy than the last piece of stuff. Same goes for sex, drugs, and whatever vice you use to distract from your spiritual void.
It eventually catches up with you, either through physical death..... or a "living" death, where you wander like a human zombie in search of the next high. Sooner or later you run out of ways to escape and must face yourself.
I know there a few folks around here that can better articulate what I am trying to say.
In '56 I desparately needed stuff. I needed a black motorcycle jacket, my kid brother needed roller-skates and a hockey stick, and then my mother, she needed a hoola-hoop; everybody needed Brylcreme so as to comb a ducks-ass, and everybody needed Zitz-off, and everybody needed new antenna for a 23" TV, and gold tinsel on the silver Christmas tree. Also, everybody, even myself, need a hot-rod, and a gal who would 'do it.' I needed an eight track player, and I needed it NOW!
About '57 they ended the air-raid drills.
Why? Because the godless Commies knew better than to obliterate us, for we would obliterate them!
About '58, in far, far too short supply, we needed more beatniks. Also, we could have done with less Sinatra.
Since then the population has doubled! Other than that, things are, more or less, about the same.
Israel, prickly star and all, was yet at it, dickering for Palestinian lands, with propaganda and a gun.
I started moving household goods long distance in the early '70s , saw average shipment size for a full size house go form about 8000# to over 20,000# mostly crap they hadn't unpacked since the last move. And of course they're shocked at how much it costs to move all that crap across the country. I hauled a whole 53' climate load of art work for some dickhead Health Care CFO, his furniture filled three 53' trailers. What a Country.........
On the daily news, 3 times a day, they take 5 minute (long time when broadcasting 30 minutes of news) to touch upon what is on sale, why we should own it, and even interview people who have it (and who are very fucking happy). They also give up dates to Dancing with the Stars, or some Reality TV show..what time it is on, where they left off on last show, and the big mystery to be solved when you watch this show the next time (tonight 8 PM EST on your favorite station 666).
Americans are the victims of social engineering - Oprah convinced them to talk about it and to leave nothing out. Jerry Springer backed her up, along with a million other "show your dirty laundry to the world" shows.
They were not always this way. I remember the time when they were not. Decent human beings who went the extra mile without whining about it, who did a job for you without stealing something, who were gracious and generous.
Don't blame this on the fucking Americans. Consumerism has been jammed down the public's throat since 911 when George W. Bush, the President of the United States stood before his nation and said: "GO SHOPPING AMERICA"
I wonder what the people of Montreal are all about. My guess is its the same thing as their cousins south of the border, and our cousins south of the border.
Nothing wrong with stuff. I like my stuff and wish I had more, although it may not be the same kind of stuff that other people covet.
I like fast cars with carburetors. I like fine firearms and my own reloads. I like food and gas and well water. I like beautiful women who can understand or at least tolerate who I am without needing to alter me. I like paid off real estate and a crackling fire in the grate. I like the beautiful artwork on antique coinage. I like satellite TV and high speed internet and the UPS/FedEx/USPS guys who bring all the additional stuff I order to my door. I like having an alarm clock that I have never used except once to get up early and watch for a comet. Best of all, I like being free and for all of this stuff that is the birthright of America, I am most thankful for.
You epitomize all that is wrong for America- when all this is taken away from you and your superficial undeserving fellow citizens - as it will be in due time (likely sooner than later)--What is it about America that you will then like?
America once stood for far much more than what you appreciate. I hope it will someday stand for something better.
Sorry, Dallas, but America is not a top down ideal where el caudillo sets priorities and then everybody is supposed to labor in service of that one goal. America is about being free to pursue one's own dreams and ideals.
You don't want to pursue my dreams, that's okay by me. I feel no obligation to bend the knee to your idea of what a just and righteous society might be--although you do not mention what that entails other than some sort of monastic renunciation of "stuff". I'm sure there is a certain level of societal pressure and/or coercion involved.
For the record, I believe in God and the US Constitution. My forebears stood on Plymouth Rock and served in the Revolution, the Civil War, WWI, WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. I will not abandon the old flag or the old cause and I do my best to help my friends and neighbors in this time of trouble.
Look over the entire world. See all the troubles that there are. And recognize that people without stuff can only stand by and offer empty condolences.
PS-- You seem happy at the thought of me being forcibly deprived of my "stuff" as if it would teach me some sort of lesson or represent some form of cosmic justice as ordained by you personally. Can't speak for you but I never mistake myself for the finger of God.
That's okay, Bid. The blessings of liberty clearly elude you at this point in time. God willing, they may one day rain down upon your thirsty soul. Same for Dallas.
Shop till you DROP!!!
DEAD!!
America is stuffed??
Reality is for people whio cannot handle drugs... Or is it stuff?
It is more like "capitalism". make people buy stuff that they don't really need and then throw them away so they buy some more and capitalist keep getting richer.
I've got a better word... SHIT
Thanks, Obola!
George Carlin the prophet: http://youtu.be/MvgN5gCuLac
Ours is a consumer driven economy, based on spending money we haven't got, to buy things we don't need, to impress people we don't like.
If it ever stops the economy goes down the shitter.
Democracy? Have you had enough of the robocalls, negative campaign ads and rich people buying elections?

Love those Veggie Tales; rented them for my kids all the time, let's hope it sank in along with Dad's guidance.

The emptier their lifes are the moar stuff they need. We are approaching peak stuff.
With your moniker, you might not be the right one to make such an observation??.......;-)
Peak hookers is far off in the future. Same with peak coke. I'm not worried.
Is that in price or in numbers ? As for the latter, post-crash I foresee a renewed hooker boom.
Peak Storage Units......holy crap, have you ever helped your buddy move out of one of those? They're paying $150-$300 per/month to store a bunch of crap that you couldn't yard sale for $400.
Supersize it
Well, it would be a lot more productive if we MADE the stuff.
Things have gotten so out of hand I'm not even sure the president has a Made in USA label anymore.
We make dollars. Demand is up and we are printing like hell.
Not even sure we have an America anymore...

Stuff?? Stuff is stupid. I spend my money on...
1) Gas
2) Food
3) Alcohol/Drugs
4) Gambling
5) Clothes
6) Events/Activities
But never "stuff" like electronics, home goods, insta whatever makers. I've simply got no want for 'stuff'
Someone get this guy a cookie!
I had one about 2 hours ago... and it's fantastic!!! ;-)

Hole in the soul; the bigger the hole the more stuff you need to fill it.
As the great American philosopher Marilyn Manson says, there's a hole in the soul that we fill with dope. And we're feeling fine.
"Stuff" where not dying by age 25 and not laboring 18 hr/day for sustenance never can arrive. Pretty much a fail comic.
in stuff we trust
Stuffed.

You can't spell Santa without Satan......
Neither one exists so not sure what your point is.
Brilliant parody of the vapidness of objectivists.

Vot? Peak Stuff?!

How many 53' trailers is adequate for a human to move comrade? You seem to know.

Our folks need to buy useless stuff.
Get Stuffed
the vast majority ( well as many as the NO vote in swizzleonthisland ) of folks don't take kindly to responsibility.
Shit is what we have.
How many Italian and British motorcycles does one need? I'd like to dump fourteen of them and keep the only four that mean anything to me anymore.
How's that for stupid collectionism?
This is what I want for Xmas... http://www.strategic-options.com/insight/what-i-want-for-christmas-black...
