Martin Armstrong Asks "Is It Time To Turn Off The Lights?" On America

Tyler Durden's picture

Submitted by Martin Armstrong via Armstrong Economics blog,

We have a very serious problem with taxation. Only the United States and Japan regards its citizens as state property. Taxes are normally owed based upon the concept that you are paying your “fair share” predicated on use. But the United States views it simply owns anyone born in the United States or overseas if they had even one American parent. This is in reality slavery that no state should own its citizens as property.

Johnson Boris

The Washington Post has reported the plight of the Mayor of London Boris Johnson’s remains in a major dispute with the U.S. Internal Revenue Service. It would be very nice to see everyone come together and challenge this to the Supreme Court for those are the pro-government judges that ruled all Americans belong to the state and that paying your “fair share” has nothing to do with taxes – just hand over whatever you have.

The mayor’s dispute with the US tax-collectors was brought to light when he traveled to the United States and did a blitz of interviews with the American news media. He explained that the U.S. government was forcing him to pay the capital gains tax on the sale of his Islington home. “Can you believe it?” When asked by Rehm if he intended to pay the bill, he said that he would not. “I think it’s absolutely outrageous.”

Boris Johnson was born in the USA but returned to England with his parents at the age of 5. He has never lived in America, but that means nothing to the IRS. They are hunting everyone everywhere. They have been sending letters to people in Canada who they figured out had one American parent but have never lived in the USA. I previous wrote about a couple in Switzerland where the wife was American living there with her Swiss husband for 20 years. When their 14 year-old son was ready to open his first bank account, he was told no way because he was America. Even foreigners married to Americans are being compelled under FATCA to disclose they are married to an American and the risk of being denied the right to have a bank account. I use to have American Express cards in USA, Britain, and Japan. That way, I paid my local bills in the local currency. Today, no credit card can be issued to an American outside the USA.

Americans are being prejudiced everywhere. What is most revealing, Obamacare notes the distinction between living in America and overseas. Ex-pats are exempt from Obamacare for they are assumed to have healthcare where they are. Otherwise, they would have to buy health insurance in America that would never cover them outside the country.

light-switch

Congress NEVER directed that Americans pay taxes worldwide simply because they were born in the USA or had one American parent. This whole scheme was crafted by the Supreme Court who merely ruled that Congress did not exclude foreign income, so it must be included. The way this is being applied is outrageous. Americans are unable to do business outside the USA with local accounts because no bank will deal with Americans thanks to FATCA. These idiots cannot grasp that this is reversing the US economy into isolationism and is paving the road for China to take the lead. It is time to turn off the lights.

No i'm not.  Sarcasm is pointless on this site, it enrages people.

The US dollar is now higher against every other significant currency, which is a rare occurrence – its strength is now unanimous. It has become the haven currency, where money goes when it’s scared or, as Dennis Gartman observed this week, even when it’s bored: "Why would capital not flee to the US at the margin? It is safest here; it can be employed in the strongest Western economy here? It is treated reasonably well here. It is the harbour in the storm and it likely shall continue to be so.”

This week has also seen a big data dump on the US economy.

To summarise: GDP growth was revised up to 3.9%, which means the US has had its best six-month stretch of growth since 2003.

Yes some people will be left behind but thats all over the world.

people were sold globalisation by TPTB and little did they know it would fuck them over completely. as usual big capital wins again but being a serf in the USA will continue to be better than a serf in china.

and i'm glad about it - its just a bit dull all the gloom

my gold is struggling - i'm the one who should be upset.

In my neck of the woods, I already see people doing their own thing.  The underground (black market - whatever you want to call it) market is booming.  People are exchanging goods and services with one another out of the eye of the taxman.  Ultimately, this is the only thing that will take the power back.  People bitching about being a debt slave while using the very same fiat  that enslaves them is beyond stupid.

I think you should try to stand your ground wherever you are, unless your country is in an acute state of collapse (Somalia-style) or targetting your physical integrity (jews in nazi Germany-style).

There's a saying in French: "Quand tous les dégoûtés seront partis, il ne restera plus que les dégoûtants". Better stay and help try change things for the better by creating awareness and helping out in your local community.

Besides, this will morph into a worldwide crisis IMO. Nowhere to run it would seem.

You don't have to physically leave. You can opt-out in place. Cut as many ties as you realistically CAN. Avoid dealing with banks, and keep your money out of them. If you are stuck on payroll, redo your exemptions to deny government the useage of your money...if you get anything back, you've paid too much throughout the year.
Avoid loans like the plague, which they ARE. And for those student loans that you can't get rid of, either pay them off (IF you can) or push for and insist on the most minimal payment plan you can get...no, you won't ever pay it off, but then you weren't going to be able to do that anyway, might as well keep as much as you can. Send them nickels to keep 'em off your neck, and save your dollars.
No, there's no need to pick up and leave...fuck these people! Why should YOU have to do the 'leaving'? It's not THEIR damned country!

Guess what? Not gonna change until you change it. If you were to die tomorrow, what would happen to all those obligations? Would all those who claim to depend on you move on with their lives or jump off a bridge?

You have to decide that your life is non refundable/renewable. You have to decide that your life is the most improtant thing, in your life. When you do the rest will be easy. A couple of acres, 400-500 sqft of shelter, a dozen solar panels, a small garden and a green house. Some hens for eggs and a couple of goats for milk. Very little is needed in life once you deicde to live it.

Thanks all for the comments. I'm a bit taken aback. I know I have a good life and I am very grateful but sometimes when I look around and see the seemingly insurmountable problems ahead, it just seems so pointless. A momentary existential crisis. Just to run away and be free. But no one can be truly free.

I've always been a loner all my life. However, I always had found something in the people I met. Creativity, ingenuity, tenacity, a sense of purpose, courage, determination, spirituality, reflection, kindness. Even if they were suffering or downtrodden, a spark of life. Now, people tend to drain me. It's as if their Humanness has been extinguished and all that remains is insatiable hunger.

"I believed in a good home, in sane and sound living, in good food, good times, work, faith and hope. I have always believed in these things. It was with some amazement that I realized I was one of the few people in the world who really believed in these things without going around making a dull middle class philosophy out of it. I was suddenly left with nothing in my hands but a handful of crazy stars." -Jack Kerouac

Unfortunately there needs to be a crash in order to hit the economic reset button and declare trickle down Reaganomics DEAD !

The US needs to go back to balanced budgets, living within our means, and making things again . We need to bring back good paying manufacturing jobs from overseas so Americans actually have a place to work.

Hopefully after the big crash (thats coming very soon), the politicians can have a grand bargain compromise on tax reform to restore confidence in the economy. No more deficit spending. No more debt. Audit the FED !!

indeed...   i agree 100%

however..

Hopefully after the big crash (thats coming very soon), the politicians can have a grand bargain compromise on tax reform to restore confidence in the economy. No more deficit spending. No more debt. Audit the FED !!

this is a different story...   first off...  the so called crash won't happen "very soon"  those in power have nearly unlimited resources and can make the current hell last for a LONG time...  just witness all those poor PM bugs....  their own wealth destruction is so painful, hardly ANY of them will acknowledge it... and i am not saying that "on principle" they are wrong...  (they are not)..   but...  "on reality" not only are they wrong....  they are DEAD and getting DEADDER wrong (-lol sorry grammar police) along with their wealth....

the point here is we are dealing with a very deep and basic structural WAR between those in power with their progressive agenda, teaming up with the leeches (aka politicians) who they will sell missionaries to their canibal constituents, regardless of the ethics... and the principles of good capitalist, and hard working individuals....

it is a real fight for power, and as you know...  power is not given up easily....

that is the reason i am asking.....  are we libertarians, hard working producers, and ethical people....

are we up to the long and hard battle ?

my gut feeling, the answer is NO....  (sorry to report my opinion)

America and Eritrea are the only two nations in the world that claim taxes from income earned by foreign residents abroad.  One of these two nations is continually being censured by the UN for harassing its foreign residents for payment of these taxes.  Guess which one.

I am sick of reading expansion-based metrics and their specious interpretation: after the u.s. financial collapse, I can't wait to hear the successors to today's pro-debt-pro-deficit-pro-government analysts struggle to cite the increasing new taxpayer-participation-rate as a sign of the long delayed national recovery.

Until then I'll make do watching indicators of the impending consumer-tech-retail collapse, such as XRT and XLY, down today 2% and 1%, show the way down to the bottom of the valley:

when you can DOCTOR the money line , control the BIG STICK, use the State to tax as much as you want, when you have access to all the RM of the world you need via your multinationals, what more can you want as an Imperial construct?

Pax Americana's problem today is that in that MINDSET, under Reaganomics, they have gone a Rubicon too far.

Now the Oligarchs of this global empire are falling out. If this falling out becomes uncontrollable then there will be consequential attrition as there will not be enuff to go around; aka 1914 or 1939 syndrome.

We are now heading there. Let this global bottle shaking of currency takes its toll.

Meanwhile those nations which are overextended will get cut down to size; just like before.

One thing is looking evident on past momentum : the USA has reached its limits unless it goes beyond Hiroshima. And that takes us to Dr Strangelove.

Nobody knows how that will end. Obama does not want to go there but he will not be there in 2017.

In the meantiime the US will shrink like all the others if the conundrum grows in size.

The frustration of those who don't want to pay the price in now very perceptible.

Winter of discontent. Summer of wolves at bay.

Reserved. (I'll get to my story in a moment)

When I was a wee sprog under the Thatcher government, I remember seeing the poll tax riots in London. This "community" tax was a radical departure from the previous ones that took into account the rating value of the tax payer's residence. Instead Thatcher decided that it would be "fairer" to change to a per-capita tax which basically meant billionaires living in mansions paid the exact same amount as the guy living in a one room flat eating ramen for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The last time a similar tax was introduced in England, in 1381, it caused the exact same reaction from the citizenry but then the riots were known by a more honest description: The Peasant's Revolt.

At the time, I was flitting back and forth between the States and Blighty to see my cousins for the Summer hols who are roughly the same age. The thing that struck me about my American cousins was their complete and utter subservience to the state. They were absolutely horrified that anyone would even dream of skipping out on the IRS. To them, it was akin to refusing to do military service while the country was at war and condemned the rioters in the strongest terms when I explained what it was all about. I learned then that taxes to an American were sacronsanct and anyone who did not contribute their share were deadbeats and moochers who harmed the great military industrial complex, the beacon of light and peace in a foreboding world. You can whine about taxes, but avoidance is not an option. Reading the online invectives these days from over the pond, I can see how things can change in a generation. At least the guys who frequent ZH seem to be awake and refuses to fund the machine that kills, steals, tortures and oppresses everything it touches. Was it ever thus? I think so in retrospect, but I don't think it was ever as blatant as it is today.

Almost every day I learn something new about the US that makes me exclaim, WTF! When I read another headline that highlights how far down into the fascist, oppressive hell hole it has fallen. From creating wars and untenable debts, to manipulating the markets and turning itself into a police state, there is an endless stream of horrific stuff. Now I am not saying my situation is any better than an American's, but by god if it were happening here, there would be a massive revolt. So it is the most curious thing to read the internet warriors preparing to fight the injustices of the federal government while basically crickets sing in the background. What else needs to happen before people will take to the streets? This general apathy is deafening, and of course the only time people do revolt over state brutality, it is staged to incite condemnation from the majority who are sick of the unpopular issues of race and violence.

It is almost as though the knowledgeable half of the American public has given up on its government, knows full well that the collapse of the dollar and its dreadful consequences are around the corner, so it has resigned itself to the inevitable and is preparing for the downfall. The other half, like my cousins, believe that the great beacon stills shines true despite almost two decades of graphic evidence that it is run by a bunch of thieving, murdering, torturing psychopaths with absolutely no change in direction after picking a nobel peace prize winning genocidal lunatic for president. Nobody but a tiny handful dares to challenge the msm, the government, the banks, or the MIC. I don't think there has ever been a more subservient bunch of serfs to the ruling classes in the history of the world, which is very hard to understand considering the history of the USA and its great leaders who wrote things like, "The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants". - Thomas Jefferson.

Mate, you make valid points. Allow me add in my two cents.

Since the implementation of total information awareness and the perfection of the State's repression aparatus (police militarisation), revolting, in a visible way, will get you stomped right quick.

I am not preaching apathy, on the contrary, I defend revolt through non-participation. Are you familiar with Etienne de la Boettie's Discourse on Voluntary Servitude (circa 1550)

Based on the "refuse to serve" principle spoused by Boettie, my personal strategy is as follows:

1) Cut down on discretionary spending; (less tax revenue)

2) Reduce my consumption to essentials (90% done), still working on stop drinking (less tax revenue)

3) Rent (no loans, no tax revenue)

4) Transition to part-time work (don't need the high income anymore) (less tax)

5) Disposable income goes towards tax-free assets (gold, second hand tools and books).

6) Use the free time and clear mind achieved by step 4 to learn new skills and network, as well as producing part of your food.

The above is a virtuous cycle, which increses one self-esteem and provides time to dedicate to pursue something one feels passionate about

Anecdotal evidence of the above working. Here in Australia, local community gardens are becoming so popular that Big Agriculture did a scare campaign saying home grown vegetables a biosecurity risk. I KID YOU NOT! http://www.abc.net.au/news/2014-02-26/community-gardens-a-biosecurity-risk-to-horticulture-sector/5285472

Hey mate! Hope you're doing well. It was just a trip down memory lane that got longer the more I stared at the screen. :)

I remember a bit about the Politics of Obedience from what my libertarian friends have told me, but I confess I haven't read his book. I do agree wholeheartedly with the notions of non-participation and my prepping efforts have gone into almost all the ones you kindly listed here, but my consumption of non-essentials really needs to go down, and others are not as complete as I would like. It's so nice to get the impetus to tackle this with great advice from you.

Being a fan of real ale, I've long since brewed my own batches from time to time, as well as trying the odd blackberry wine making (We've got blackberry bushes all over the place and their natural yeast makes it easy). If you like the odd brew, I highly recommend a kit to make some of your own. That also counts as a useful skill to have I reckon - people will always drink beer. :)

For me, non-participation extends to most things but when it came to my government's participation in war, I felt I had no choice but to protest and become visible to 5 eyes. I simply couldn't stand idly by when the UK was poised to help in the invasion of Syria last year to start WWIII. But to each his own.

Cheers mate. I really enjoy making fermented foods and drinks, but currently lack the space for proper home brewing. Kombucha is making a comeback in Oz and I have been teaching some friends how to make it.

We are visible to the 5-eyes. I see war as primarily as a pretense to stealing wealth, from the vanquished and from the population via war taxes. For a long time, the wealth was stolen by the sovereign, now it done by corporations. So by not consuming their products, you are hurting them more.

I agree that the anger is hard to suppress. The time for retribution will come, but first the house has to come down.

This whole FATCA crap is plain nonsense and typical of a failing empire.

If I were an American living outside the US, I'd sure not tell the IRS where I lived and I'd never pay a single penny in taxes. I'd find a way of handling money w/o opening a bank account in my name.

That said, it's good to see that London Mayor BoJo is being harrassed by the IRS, maybe it'll open his eyes to the plight of large numbers of other Americans abroad.

Smacker:  while it is true that FATCA is plain nonsense and typical of a failing empire, not telling the IRS where you live or pay any tax owed is simply not a possibility for those of us who have some assets and want to live a reasonably pleasant life.  I am not sure you completely comprehend how powerful the IRS has become or how unpleasant they can make one's existence.  So while I am preparing to disengage to the extent that I can, it is simply not feasible to do so entirely.  Sad, so sad.  This is what being a US citizen has become.

OK, point taken, I do understand. Living abroad "off the grid" and looking over one's shoulder all the time is not how decent people want to live their lives. And anybody who has a half-decent job nowadays can't do without a bank account. And many countries these days have got upper limits on using cash for transactions. There's no easy way out.

I agree with the general thrust of Mr. Armstrong's article, but there are multiple errors of fact ("no credit card can be issued to an American outside the USA"; "no bank will deal with Americans").

If assaulted by a would be mugger, and I pull out my gun out and shoot him straight between the eyes, I have "demanded" to be free of him and his demands.

I once worked with a girl that wasn't very pretty, but cared for and carried herself as if she was. That, coupled with a nice personality, kept the guys enamored of her. Her wonderful personality also allowed her to have many female friends that then also heightened her attractiveness to the men. She did not let others' attitudes define her, she defined herself, and then lived it--she WAS pretty, others' definition be damned.

I am using "demand" as in an attitude--"I demand to be free, because I am free."

Actually, Winchester, I am free and I am advertising the fact that you can also be free if you choose.

I will use any means at my disposal to advertise that as I am free to do just that...including the use of the internet.

Just because you seek to restrict the First Amendment Rights of the US Constitution does not mean that I will comply. In fact it is YOUR Government which is PROHIBITED from the restriction of that Right. "Congress shall make no law abridging..."

The US Constitution binds the Government and its actions so that the public shall enjoy Freedom and Liberty. Thus the Government is enslaved and subservient to its masters, the People.

So just continue to fuck yourself, Winchester. You have fucked yourself as you have chosen subservience through your compliance and complicity to anticonstitutionalism and authoritarianism. I am not subject to laws which violate the US Constitution. Nobody in the United States is subject to those laws as the US Constitution is the Supreme Law of the Land.

kchrisc...I do not demand that they come and get me whomever they may be. In fact if anyone is foolish enough to attempt that then I have some very nasty surprises for them. I do reserve all rights of self defense.

They had best just leave me alone. I will happily die for my principles if that is required as I refuse their enslavement.

I have paradise awaiting me on the other side of life. I have absolutely no fear of death as there is definitely a God which I have demostrated through the Physical Sciences and Math.

They are the ones walking in fear of death as they will abandon their principles for material gain and, if necessary, to extend their own lives. So do not demand that they aggress upon you. You do have the right to be left alone.

Do not invite trouble.

Of course I will not be antisocial to them. I will be more than happy to invitie them out to go hunting with me in a social outing so that we can enjoy the outdoors in comaraderie...celebrating Liberty and Freedom.

It is like those sci-fi movies that the Zionists put out from Hollywood, where the alien invaders are found to attack one planet, milk it, then kill it before moving on. They are telling us something, while also rubbing our noses in it. (Some of the movies are good though.)

"Milk it, kill it, move on." Keep that in mind, and then go research the goings on in the DC US' strategic nuke forces the past two years.

They will continue to milk the American country, then turn it over to other foreigners while also destroying the juiciest assets.

Just because many Zionists are Jews does not mean that all Jews are Zionist. Many are not.

Zionism is much like the Zealotry in Jesus Christ's era. The Scribes and Pharasees were definitely not Zealots. If they were then the Romans would have crushed them. But the Scribes and the Pharasees were most definitely Jewish. Jesus was a Jew. But he rejected the Zealotry of the era.

While many Zionists are Jews I can name many Gentiles whom are Zionist. Mitch McConnel is a Zionist. So is John McCain. Barack Obama is a Zionist. Many Gentile Christians are Zionuist. They are not Jews.

So just what was racist about that post?

Sorry to break it to you but any Jew who's not a Zionist disregards both biblical and Talmudic law, which dictate that a Jew must live in the land (of Israel) and nowhere else.

You're only a Zionist if you live in Israel. And are a Jew. Christians can't be Zionists nor can any gentile be a Zionist. Yes, you can be a 'friend' to the Jews and support Jewish interests in the middle east, but that won't make you a Zionist. Neither Obama nor McCain or McConnell are Zionists. Reexamine your premises.

Too many people it has become clear a struggle is occurring to unseat America as the worlds most dominate nation. For many proud Americans who see the United States as having a right to be in control it is both threatening and frustrating to see that control slip away.

It is threatening to think the country might quickly fall to the position of a second rate power mired in debt with many of the options we have come to see as our right suddenly ripped away. It is frustrating that in many ways America appears to have become its own worse enemy guilty of political inaction and squandering its power through a series of bad choices and missteps. More in the article below about the continuing massive shift in power to Asia and how America must immediately face its problems to set its house in order.

I just wanted to remind people that there is no such thing as China vs the US or any other country vs the US for that matter.  This thinking is just another example of Hegelian Dialectic.  The real movers and shakers control both sides, sorry that should be all sides, of the argument.  These people are internationalists and there only allegiance is money and power.  To support one team over another is falling into their trap.  There is only one solution to this problem and that is to decapitate the globalist system wherever it resides, and go back to individual sovereignty being paramount and creating a system of voluntary cooperation.

I believe you can shield income as a foreign corporation.

The IRS recognizes the rights of a foreign corporation wholly owned by a US member.

Subpart F in the Regs should be examined by those impacted by the IRS squid.

A lucrative business for lawyers and accountants.

"When their 14 year-old son was ready to open his first bank account, he was told no way"

Did you get this? No foreign bank wants to open any accounts for Americans.

Wake up, your government is at war with YOU.

If you're really State Property, then you can also be used guinea pigs in secret bio-warfare experiments too.

Your food, water, and air belong to the State too I suppose.

Yep.  Also, American credit cards aren't always welcome.

I just tried to buy a Christmas present online.  Turned out that the company was Asian and would not accept my Citibank Mastercard for payment.

They asked me to pay with an Asian credit card.  I wrote back to them, "No acceptee American credit, no get sale".  Hope they understood.
