Putin Kills "South Stream" Pipeline, Will Build New Massive Pipeline To Turkey Instead

Tyler Durden's picture

In retrospect, it should have been obvious in August.

Back then we wrote that the EU's poorest member nation, Bulgaria, had been an enthusiastic supporter of the Russian-backed South Stream gas pipeline project, whose construction has stoked tensions between the West and Moscow as it enabled gas supply to bypass troubled Ukraine (thus squeezing the desparate economy back into Russia's hands). In early June, Bulgaria's Prime Minister Plamen Oresharski ordered an initial halt (after Europe offered the nation's suddenly collapsing banking system a lifeline). Subsequently, Energy Minister Vasil Shtonov has ordered Bulgaria’s Energy Holding to halt any actions in regards of the project as it does not meet the requirements of the European Commission.

And then, just to send Putin a very clear message where the allegiances of this former Soviet satellite nation lie, NATO deployed 12 F-15s and 180 troops to Bulgaria's Graf Ignatievo Air Base.

A dozen F-15s and approximately 180 personnel from the 493rd, based at RAF Lakenheath, England, have deployed to Graf Ignatievo Air Base to participate in a two-week bilateral training exercise with the Bulgarian air force, Pentagon spokesmen Col. Steve Warren told reporters Monday.

The exercise began Monday and will continue through Sept. 1.

The purpose of the deployment is to “conduct training and focus on maintain joint readiness while building interoperability,” Warren said.

The move comes at a time when America’s Eastern European partners and allies are concerned about Russian military intervention in Ukraine. There are fears that Moscow might try to destabilize other countries in the region.

“This is a reflection of our steadfast commitment to enhancing regional security,” Warren said about the exercise.

We concluded as follows: "How will Putin react one wonders?"

We now have the answer: earlier today, in a stunning announcement, Putin revealed that the South Stream project is now finished. As the WSJ reports, "Putin said Moscow will stop pursuing Gazprom’s South Stream pipeline project that would supply natural gas to Europe with an underwater link to Bulgaria, blaming the European Union for scuttling the project."

“We couldn’t get necessary permissions from Bulgaria, so we cannot continue with the project. We can’t make all the investment just to be stopped at the Bulgarian border,” Mr. Putin said. “Of course, this is the choice of our friends in Europe.”

“We think that the European Commission’s position was not constructive,” Mr. Putin said. “If Europe does not want to implement it, it will not be implemented.”

Putin is right: Europe - Austria excluded - had seen rising resistance to the South Stream in recent months as the crisis in Ukraine has intensified. The EU is concerned that the project would cement Russia’s position as Europe’s dominant supplier of natural gas. Russia already meets around 30% of Europe’s annual needs.

So what does Putin do? He signs a strategic alliance with NATO member Turkey, the only country in Europe that is anything but European (over the endless veto of Germany preventing its entrance into the EU over fears of cheap, migrant labor) and which lately has been increasingly anti-Western, to build a new mega-pipeline to Turkey instead. As RT reports, Gazprom CEO Aleksey Miller said the energy giant will build a massive gas pipeline that will travel from Russia, transit through Turkey, and stop at the Greek border – giving Russia access to the Southern European market. In effect, Russia will still have access to the Southern Stream endmarkets

The pipeline will have an annual capacity of 63 billion cubic meters. A total of 14 bcm will be delivered to Turkey, which is Gazprom’s second biggest customer in the region after Germany.

Russia’s energy minister Aleksandr Novak said that the new project will include a specially-constructed hub on the Turkish-Greek border for customers in southern Europe.

In a joint press conference between Putin and Turkish leader Erdogan, the Russian said that the supply of Russian gas to Turkey will be raised by 3 billion cubic meters via the already operating Blue Stream pipeline, Last year, 13.7 bcm of gas was supplied to Turkeyvia Blue Stream, according to Reuters.

And another fringe benefit of becoming a preferred Russian ally: Moscow will reduce the gas price for Turkish customers by 6 percent from January 1, 2015, Putin said. Later, Novak said the discount could reach 15 percent, subject to negotiations. Sorry Ukraine.

And sorry Bulgaria, which despite being wholly reliant on Russian gas for its commercial, industrial and residential needs, has decided to side with the sinking European Union, making it merely the latest insolvent vassal state of the sinking Eurozone, something Putin made abundantly clear during today's conference:

  • PUTIN: BULGARIA UNABLE TO ACT AS SOVEREIGN STATE OVER GAS LINK
  • PUTIN: RUSSIA TO REORIENT ENERGY RESOURCES TO OTHER MKTS: IFX

Bulgaria should now expect its gas costs to boldly go where Ukrainian energy prices have so boldly gone before.

As for Turkey, the country that bridges Europe with Asia is merely the latest expansion of Putin's anti-dollar alliance:

  • TURKEY, RUSSIA AGREE TO USE LOCAL CURRENCIES IN TRADE: TRT

Or, as Obama would put it, Russia just got even more "isolated."

I must say, I was beginning to think that Putin was weak, etc. by not reacting to any of the sanctions, but this is a game changer.

Through this several things could be accomplished...

First, Turkey's needs in natural gas are now secured, so Erdogan does NOT have to help ensure that Assad falls in Syria to help in the construction of that U.S./Qatari/Saudi pipeline. In other words, ISIS's supply chain may be in trouble in the next few weeks.

Second, the populations of Bulgaria and Hungary, to name a few, are going to be even more pissed at the E.U. Oligarchy given what they are missing out on here.

Third, by pushing the pipeline all the way to the Greek border, Russia and Turkey will tempt Greece to get out of the E.U. if they want to partake in some of that cheap gas.

Turkey + Greece = control of the Bosphorus.

Turkey could even be the first NATO domino to fall.

Come on Turkey! pull a De Gaulle on NATO!

I'd expect an uptick in Muslim Extremism in Turkey.  Somehow mixed up with the Kurds.  The Kurds seem to be turning into the Montagnards of the Middle East; despised by everybody and armed and fomented by the US (and periodically left hanging out to dry when they become momentarily inconvenient).

Turkey won't be hard to flip over right now.

They have been running test balloons up for a flip for some time now.

Remember the Youtube vids and phone call recordings of False Flag ops and hidden money in houses?

Erdogan barely got re-elected due to Gullen pulling back support from hard line Islamists and that really never got patched up...

They could go either way with a flip in Turkey... Kinda like that song... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gi0Rt0slfy4

It could go secular, I lean towards Islamic. That fits with the Islamification of the Balkans and gives ISIS a friendly base to destabilize the ME from.

Either way, they could flip Turkey in 6 months max from given a "Go" at this point.

If you would like, I can refer you to hours of reading/intel on this very topic at various websites.

In the past, most of the military were secular and would have already toppled Erdogan.  Things have changed though and most are loyal to him.  As well, with the massive influx of foreigners into Turkey, most of them vote for Erdogan while a lot of (most) Turks are kinda sick of him.  But regardless, him and his ilk have far too much power, and the next guy would more than likely be a lot like him.

+1 @blaireauhedge

You've said everything I wanted to say, especially the importance of Syria in this deal. The only thing to mention is the fate of Incirlik, one of the largest US Airforce bases outside continental America that has been the lauch pad and intelligence platform for every war in the ME, and a crucial SigInt station against the Soviets before that. I wouldn't trust Erdogan with a barge pole, he is clearly deranged, but this move by Putin was a bit of a master stroke. I would never have guessed pivoting on Turkey, a long term military ally of the US.

Edit: As the more astute observers have already commented, Turkey is now a target for a sudden popular Islamic/colour revolution uprising to destablise any deals done with Russia.

"Second, the populations of Bulgaria and Hungary" - do not know about Hungary, but if you, somehow read the Bulgarian (independent, not controlled by corporate interest) press you would be highly surprised to find out that the Bulgarian population opinion is showing views contrary to yours. The gas pipeline was viewed as the Russia's big brother imposed interested through internal economic and political muscle with Russo-phyilick views, and tightly connected to the old-new oligarch class widely reach 0.01% of the population controlling a lot of the economic interests. So, The People are saying: "Ok, if Russia wants to build, we will let it but, but We have to be the beneficiary and they have to follow the European common laws, everyone in the Union is obligated to follow. If they do not, well it is very simple, they can not build."

So, before writing, mildly speaking, incorrect things, please find time to educate your self from the correct sources.

Turkey was always the wild card in NATO.  Turkey of course got some benefits in the past with basing US systems, but now that the Soviet Union is over and Turkey has plenty of economic cooperation with Russia (they want to boost to $100B by 2020, making Turkey the second largest economic partner to Russia next to China.  If you count all EU countries as the EU, then third largest trader).  Turkey though, has had issues with other NATO country Greece, and US position on Israel has also pissed off Turkey.  All the while, Erdogen has been getting lambasted constantly by US on multiple subjects (its stance on ISIS, its stance on domestic policies regarding Islam, the building the presidential palace (didn't nearly cost as much as one would expect for something extravagant as that palace)).  Turkey is a regional power (second largest military in NATO) and they have their own policies as well as wishes.  To be honest, for the longest time, Turkey really wasn't developing and only recent years Turkey was doing real good economically (growing manufacturing).  So with this growth, their demands are higher and well, they will seek other methods of gaining more revenue.

Europa presented the Russians with 2 options: either build the pipes by their ever changing 'rules' whereby the whole infrasturcture could be used to pump Azeri or other gas through those pipes... not a very enticing prospect for the Russians, is it? No wonder the Russians didn't go with this...  but the main reason they were blocking this project was the instructions from the US via the Biden group who need to keep the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine to maintain the pipe network (investment already allocated for that...) because without Russian gas that network is basically scrap metal... and now Putin signs a direct deal with Turkey to supply the same amount of gas that was intended for the South Stream... leaving EU an option to buy some "cheap" US gas from McCain and I'm pretty sure that Ukrainian transit pipe will be drying up pretty soon... What a bunch of idiots (obiously bought and paid for and/or compromised) are in charge in the EU...

Yes, it was time to announce at the press conference alternative #110.  He thought to himself that alternative #115 was probably going to be his next public announcement, took a chug, and then went to get his press secretary.

  • Go to ITA if needed; and most of all

HEAD OFF TEAM_KSA's EUROPEAN PIPELINE PLANS!!!  IRN can join in by building a Pipeline DIRECTLY TO TRK; and join in on the Deal.

It's a counterstrike to KSA/USA's Plans to sabotage IRN/IRQ/SYR Pipelines via COLOR_REVOLUTIONS&/INSURGENCIES, which happened to semi-backfire with the Rise of ISIL (ILV or ISM for the ISO-3).  TEAM_KSA will have to go through JOR/ISR or Southern SYR(Mebbe LBN), which will get them hammered by ISIL "AND" by His Excellency al-Assad.

Just like that, TEAM_RUS' Chess Grandmasters beat the rest while being constructive with its partners.  3-D Chess vs Checkers...

Brilliant, Gospodin Putin is...

“We couldn’t get necessary permissions from Bulgaria, so we cannot continue with the project. We can’t make all the investment "

Certain officials in Bulgaria will continue to get money under the table from the US/EU but then that will dry up.  The people of Bulgaria just got screwed by the EU.  A few years from now when low income Bulgaria is a 2nd or 3rd class country in the EU they will be ignore when if they had acted in their self interest they could have be an important gas transit nation and could be collecting a nice supplemental income.

Stupid move Bulgaria, you have no one to blame but yourself.

Don't be unkind.

And sorry Bulgaria, which despite being wholly reliant on Russian gas for its commercial, industrial and residential needs, has decided to side with the sinking European Union, making it merely the latest insolvent vassal state of the sinking Eurozone

Isn't there a word in your language for coercion? That's what Lavrov called it and he is closer to the situation than you.

And what was NATO's economic threat if Bulgaria allowed the pipeline?  More than the poorest nation in Europe could endure.

After the West objected to the Bulgarian leg, Putin figured he'd have to let Bulgaria off the hook.  But the Russian President let the world think he wantrd to run the pipe through Bulgaria.  And the world gladly obliged him until today.

So Br'er Obama tossed Br'er Putin into the briar patch of the Turkish Straits.

And if Putin decides to let Assad go, what make-good will Erdogan give him for his loss of Tartus?

Boyko Borisov the recently elected leader of Bulgaria is nothing but an American/EU stooge cocksucker, this is no surprise. He heads the "pro EU" party GERB. The previous socialist government was in favor of South Stream.

Brussels and its colonial master in Washington are consumed by madness. It has a "death wish". And doubtless the EU-crats are emptying the Treasury before it implodes.

Putin was trying to stop them jumping off the cliff with South Stream, but they're ears are closed and not in the mood to listen. He will develop other markets and then show two fingers to Europe. Then it'll be too late.

Will the EU implode before WWIII or will WWIII simply speed the process?

Europa can have some more of that McGas now... note how Bulgaria stopped this project after McCain visit, those idiots (poorest country in the EU...) lost 400 mln EUR in annual transit payments... EU just doesn't get it yet that as long as Russia has gas there will be customers willing to buy it... it's really that simple.

Russia allies with Turkey?  That is a good one.  That won't last long.  I personally stood on the embankment in Azov and could only imagine what must have happened there.  No, it just just goes too far back and no one has forgotten any of it.  I really doubt many Zhers have been there because that is a part of Russia that many Westerners go to.  I really is an interesting place and it is the real Russia.  It is not tourist.

Imade the mistake once of bringing a Turkish gal over who was on work exchange prgrams of sort to meet my wife.  That was huge mistake.  I got told to never bring a Turk into the house ever again.  Oops!  Yet Russians love to go the Turlkey for vacation so go figure.  Russians can confuse you because I had ask why they go Turkey but do not like Turks.  The response was "fuck the Turks we like their climate and we don't want them in our country".  Oh, OK, I guess.  What?

On the way home form visiting relatives I was talking to wife and we talked about Abkazhia.  It turns out that I have some in-laws there.  They seem a have .gov there.  I asked the Mrs. why and she said that they don't need a government there but to get ideas because they do not like interlopers.  The Mrs has been there and says it is nice.  Might be a nice place to visit.  And then you have Geaorgia right there which I beleive is the oldest country in the world who for some reason likes the U.S..  Then you have Ossetia and then you have the Chechens and then you have the Don Cossacks and then you have MOAR that I have lost track of.  You have to go see it for yourself.  The Don Cossacks are pretty bad ass and they are not Russian even though they are Russian citizens.  Go figure.

in related news, a french reporter in Kobane witnessed ISIS attacks coming from the turkish side of the border. It seems the ottamans want to help the establishment of a new califate by ISIS, and are ready to counter the US when their policy is not exactly aligned on the turkish one. Ditto for Saudi Arabia, which began the price war when US started to side with kurds against ISIS.

Tsk.  I guess this means Bulgaria is off of everybody's Christmas card list this year.  They were the weakest link in the chain and most subject to central bank manipulations and blackmail.  But they needed that gas more than just about anybody.

Too bad Bulgaria changed the shackles of the Warsaw Pact for the shackles of the EU/NATO pact.  Was there ever any liberty?  Now they will find out how deeply the shackles bite.  They may discover the NATO airbase is not to protect them from "Russian aggression" but to ensure they vote against doing business with Russia.

The second to Hungary is Ausri and its gas hub of EU dimension in Baumgarten, connecting eastern pipe lines from Slovakia, Southern from Hungary, Adriatic pipe line, italian and grman pipe lines.

Turkey is since 1962, more, then 50 years a candidate to EU. EU has accepted in the mean time 21 countries, Turkey still waits.

This gives Turkey also a local leverage against all balkan countries and its enemy, Greece.

In the war 1977 russian car kicked out turks from Bulgaria, after 600 years of otoman rule in Bulgaria. Bulgarians forgot, who is their friend, aparently.

But now EU wants to have an explanation from Russia about the move.

The move clearly puts Turkey into a favorable position. Turkey will blackmail EU and not Russia. Russia was interested in selling the gas output. Turkey will press EU, to accept Turkey into EU.

THIS was an excellent move from Putin with crazy repercussions for EU, this move can blast EU apart in the comming years. This move will destroy EU.

Congrats Putin. Much better, then to wage a war against USA and EU, much better move.
