I love basketball. Don't really care who wins but it's nice if the "home" team wins as long as they aren't dirty shits like the Celtics of the 80s. There is a big difference between enjoying the sport and being a #1 fan. The ironic thing is, the people not in the stands are the fans and the people at courtside are just enjoying the specatacle. Almost nobody really cares about basketball the sport anymore. Sigh.

Sports are fun when you and your family/friends get together to shoot a few hoops or to play volleyball on the beach before you go swimming. School sports can be extremely fun, educational and very engaging.
I remember growing up, all the kids of the neighborhood used to gather and we'd ride our bikes or play soccer until late. Just good clean fun. I wouldn't trade those days for a thousand Playstations.
logicalman...i played hockey as a kid on a flooded field in boston. at the end of the day my hands were so cold i could not take off my skates and would walk home on the sidewalk in rubber scabbards by the light of the street lamps. on my bedroom wall hung the pictures of the rocket and gordie. i can remember back then the guys who rose to be stars of their highschool teams whose talents were honed on these windblown shards. sometimes 40 mph. you could not skate into it. there were no girls to impress, no fortunes to be made. just chasing a puck and a dream.
Playing sports is one thing. Spending 2 or more hours per week watching other men play sports is stupid! Plug in with some Hendrix, classic Bowie or even stand up comedy, step up on a treadmill or do basic weight lifting routines. Like I said before, sooooooooo many things to do instead of wasting away in front of the tv.

Tell ya what. The best game I ever went to was a Chicago Black Hawks hockey game one evening. A broker had tickets that were on 2 folding chairs down at the bottom of the stairs next to the visitor's penalty box (Some of you gettin' the picture.... the Knuks with a bookie, drunk next to the penalty box?) So we're drinking more and more, even in spite of a massive French dinner (cream sauces and oils) were getting pretty lubed. So at one point when a visiting player (Canook) got stuck in the box, the guy started saying shit to him through the 1/2" crack between the glass walls. So the player is getting angry, my bud is scorching him, he starts beating the piss out of the glass trying to bean my bud with his hockey stuck, yelling and screaming, and as more guys come into the box, the scene is like a tag team, just going fuck all batshit crazy. i mean this was something straight out a Fellini movie... just fucking bizarre! So we get rides home and he's not in the next day. Day after that I call him (figure he had one hell of a hangover) and he tells me that he got home, couldn't walk right and was leaning (scraping) his shoulder against the hall way wall, knocking pictures off it, wife gets up mad as hell, tells him to sleep on the couch and in the morning woke up and his Lab had been laying on the floor next to him, and he'd thrown up all over the dog. And that, you youngin's was a good night out in the bond business back in the old days.

The Hawks have never drawn big crowds in Atlanta. 20 years ago the minor league hockey team playing in the same arena as the Hawks had a much larger attendance. Hawks tickets start at $15 so I am sure just about anyone who really wanted to go could go, but no one wants to. Some of the problem is crime in downtown Atlanta which increases significantly at night. Some of the problem is the City of Atlanta cops who route after game traffic through the hood, when it is unnecessary as the interstate is right there. And some of it is that basketball is pretty boring.

Interestingly, I heard that the owners are selling the team, partly as a result of the making public of a controversial e-mail from one of the owners to the other owners.
Supposedly, the owner writing the e-mail wanted team management to explore ways of getting more wealthy, white fans.

The NBA has turned into nothing but a scripted reality show. Fans have figured out that unless their team is scripted to win, they won't.
Right now the NBA is focused on LeBron's shockingly bad return to Cleveland which will turn into a miraculous mid season recovery after talks of LeBron once again changing teams.
The only sport that isn't following a pre-planned script is baseball, but crowds are even smaller than NBA games in most cities. Watching athletes try to complete sentences in post game interviews is painful. LeBron sounds worse than a kid with Down Syndrome describing what he ate for dinner.

I like basketball. I played the game (very badly) in high school. I actually find I like the WNBA game the best. That's right, professional women's basketball. In that version of the game, the players pass, play defense, hit free throws, and run plays.
In most versions of the men's game today, "offense" consists of 4 guys standing around while the anointed star does whatever he feels like, and anyone who tries to play defense gets called for a foul. Then the star misses his free throws because he's too lazy to work on the aspect of the game that really is just practice and work.
The NBA destroyed its own game through marketing. They let Michael Jordan do whatever he wanted to create spectacle. They ignored the rules of basketball to keep Shaquille O'Neal in the league, despite the fact that he travelled and charged every time down the court on offense, and blocked or hacked every play on the defensive end. He should have fouled out in 3 minutes in every game he ever played, but the NBA wanted to market him so they just let the game become a cartoon. That filtered down into the college ranks, and the NBA made it even worse by drafting college freshmen, destroying the college game and making that even more overtly corrupt.
So yeah, I like the ladies' game. They don't dunk and clown around; they just play basketball and work hard at it. That's the part I enjoy, particularly since I never had any skills but I could make free throws, take a charge, and get in position to rebount because those attributes have to do not with skill but with work, desire, and a high threshold of pain.

I like hockey a lot. Like all games with a goal in the middle (hockey, basketball, soccer) the game is mostly about triangles and creating mismatches, but the speed of hockey is what makes it great entertainment and spectacle. The quickness required to play hockey well is astonishing.

A friend of mine in NYC had 3rd base field level seasons tickets forever at the old Yankee stadium. I can't recall but he may have carried them over from his dad when he died.
When they transferred to the new stadium the team gave him the old we need to move you back a section, oh and there's a new transfer convenience fee of I believe it was around @$250K per seat. All just so they could squeeze in the 1% down front and make more $. He didn't even get a chance to pony up the money to stay on the field. That being said, the NBA seems to go out of their way to keep the sport stale. They should shake it up a bit...raise the hoop to 12 feet, and make the court bigger. Add a 4 point line, even a 5 point. What was the average height of a player over 100 years ago when the game was invented, like 5' 6"?

The Rams had a new stadium built in St. Louis in 1994, only 20 years ago. Now, they want to build a new stadium with the estimated cost of more than a $billion or they'll leave town.
The old Busch stadium was in service for 40 years before building a new dome in St. Louis.
Ordinary people can't attend the games because of the expense and the expectation is that these ordinary people are going to be taxed to fork over much of the $billion dollars for the new stadium.
My attitude is that if the Rams want to leave St. Louis, don't let the door hit you on the way out.

The 1% are up in the boxes...with all the food and drinks.....the courtside are Corporation owned..and are given out to people....freebies....beenies...for something....most of those empty seats are sold to season ticket holders who could not sell them or even give them away...I know I had some Denver Nuggets season tickets once...iI had to buy them for the Avalanche Tickets I had....I could not give them away...but it had a 2$ off gas coupon on the back..that is all they were good for...lol...

Modern sports has become the modern opiate for the masses. Thinking this 1 picture is an accurate representation of sports attendance is really naive. Most stadiums for NBA, NHL, MLB, NFL are typically filled to or near capacity.
No one wants to go sit in a toilette to be seen like the rich and self-important. "Oh, look at me, I'm so cool."

NBA = Not Basketball Actually. Guys taking 6 steps before dunking. David Stern's "star system" guys like Shaq could back over anyone and know they'd get the call and shoot free throws. Guys just breathe on Jordan and he'd get to go to the line. Home team gets the call on almost every play....... The NBA is fuckin ridiculous and unwatchable by people who appreciate real basketball. That's why the fannies aren't in the seats anymore. Watch the college game, much better officiated and coached. NBA sucks.
Too funny, you see more fundamentals and strategy in middle school basketball than you do in the NBA. At what point do they they start teaching to forget all the rules, ie traveling, 3 seconds, carrying, ect, they had to learn while they were you g?

Fenway park lost it's record run of sold out games awhile ago.
Nobody goes to any of these events unless theyhave an expense account or access to a hospitality area.
