US Army Sends 100 Tanks To Eastern Europe To "Deter Russian Aggression"

Tyler Durden's picture

The ink on Barack Obama's Chuck Hagel termination letter hasn't dried yet but already the US president's new, and seemingly far more hawkish advisors, are having their warmongering presence felt. Case in point: the Eastern European theater of (Cold) war, where Military.com reports that the new Army commander in Europe plans to bolster the U.S. armored presence in Poland and the Baltic states and keep rotations of U.S. troops there through next year and possibly beyond to counter Russia. Lt. Gen. Frederick "Ben" Hodges, who replaced Lt. Gen. Donald M. Campbell  earlier this month as commander of U.S. Army Europe, said the Army was looking to add about 100 Abrams tanks and Bradley Fighting Vehicles to the forces in Eastern Europe.

These U.S. Army M1A2 Abrams tanks are part of the European Activity Set,
a combined-arms battalion-sized set of vehicles and equipment pre-positioned
at Germany’s Grafenwoehr Training Area. Markus Ruachenberger/U.S. Army

"We are looking at courses of action for how we could pre-position equipment that we would definitely want to put inside a facility where it would be better maintained, that rotational units could then come and draw on it and use it to train, or for contingency purposes," Hodges said in a briefing from Vilnius, Lithuania.

So "better maintained... or for contingency purposes." Got it. That probably also explains why as NATO is seeking to deliver 100 tanks to Eastern Europe, it has already added several squadrons of fighter jets just minutes away from Russia's border. For "contingency purposes."

Before:

After:

As before, we wonder how the US would react if Russia were to place a few extra fighter jets in Cuba or a few hundred tanks in Mexico. Aside from historical fact of course.

But back to NATO's tanks whose only mission is "contingency", and certainly not to intimidate Putin that the NATO ring around the nation is closing.

Hodges visited a training site in Lithuania that could be used to store armor and said he would look at similar sites in Estonia and Poland. "Certainly, I don't see a need to build infrastructure -- a FOB [Forward Operating Base] if you will -- or anything like that, that would be used for U.S. forces," Hodges said.

Since taking command, Hodges has made clear his concerns about Russia, which annexed Crimea last March and has supported the separatists in eastern Ukraine. U.S. Army Europe, which had 280,000 troops at the height of the Cold War, now has 31,000.

The rotations of U.S. troops on training missions in Eastern Europe would provide "deterrence against Russian aggression," Hodges said.

"I don't think that Russia has any intention of some sort of a conventional attack into NATO territory because they know that would generate an Article 5 response."

Which is why it is best to provoke Russia first by building up NATO armed forces on Russia borders, something NATO previously express would not happen.

He referred to the NATO treaty article calling on all member states to respond to an attack on any member of the alliance. Poland, Lithuania, Estonia and Latvia are all members of the 28-member NATO alliance.

"I think that what they [the Russians] do want to do is to create that ambiguity, plant the seeds of uncertainty so that the alliance members lose confidence that the rest of the alliance would come to their aid if they were, in fact, attacked," Hodges said.

Well, no, that's not what the Russians want. But if NATO keeps piling fighter jets and tanks on its border it will leave Putin no other choice. Which is precisely what the NATO endgoal is here.

In other news, speaking on background, a senior administration official traveling with Vice President Joe Biden on his trip to Ukraine last week said the U.S. has provided more than $100 million in non-lethal assistance "to help the Ukrainians defend themselves."

The aid included night-vision goggles;protective vests; counter-mortar radars; blankets; vehicles; and Meals, Ready to Eat, the official said. The official said the U.S. had concluded that arming Ukraine would be counter-productive since "no matter how many weapons we provided to Ukraine, they were going to get outgunned by the Russians."

Well, actually here the US is lying once again. Recall that "Hacked US Documents Said To Reveal Extent Of Undisclosed US "Lethal Aid" For Ukraine Army", proving once again that the US is just as heavily involved in the Ukraine civil war as is Russia, also implying that the stated NATO reason for intervention is nothing but the red herring NATO wants to brings tensions to a new high, one that preferably breaks out in limited conflict or contained armed combat. Because clearly the global economy has reached its GDP plateau and only war can push it beyond at this point.

As for how Russia feels about this latest NATO expansion, we go to Bloomberg where we read that "Russia is taking countermeasures and will take more, based on analysis of NATO actions near it’s borders, Interfax news service says citing Alexander Grushko, Russia’s envoy to military alliance, in Brussels."

Grushko adds that there is "no reasons for additional deployment of NATO forces near Russian borders, according to IFX", and that NATO measures, strengthening military activity near Russian borders, lead to intensification of military tensions.

Of course they do. And NATO knows it all too well.

And speaking of limited conflict, Germany is already having nightmares about what is sure to be a very, very long recession. As Pravda reported, "the German government prepares for a long conflict with Russia." German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said the crisis with Russia could take more than a decade, and Ukraine's aspirations to NATO only "adds fuel to the fire," he said in an interview with ZDF television channel on Sunday, November 30th.

"Sometimes, 14 days are enough to start a conflict, but may take 14 years to solve this conflict," the head of German diplomacy said. When asked whether the conflict with Russia could last for such a long time, Steinmeier responded positively.

For the German minister, the issue of Crimea's future appears to be unsolvable.  According to Steinmeier, international recognition of the Crimea as a part of the Russian territory is impossible. "We can not either ignore the illegal annexation of the Crimea, or forget about it and just ignore this fact. The conflict between us will continue," the Foreign Minister of Germany said.

Horrible news if you are Europe, right? Well yes... and no. Horrible if you are a member of the soon to be exinct middle-class, i.e., the 99%. If you are lucky enough to be among Europe's uber-rich, all that the decade long conflict between Europe and Russia will do is provide the ECB with a constant scapegoat to engage in more, more, more easing, be it QE or otherwise, which in turn will crush the middle class like in the US, but make the uber-rich, uber-richer than they have ever been.

Which is ironic: as Europe's wealthiest wage a war of words against the former KGB spy and current head of Russia through their numerous media holdings, it is they that should be most grateful for his existence.

NATO prepares “rapid reaction force” for confrontation with Russia

By Bill Van Auken
3 December 2014

The NATO foreign ministers meeting held in Brussels Tuesday ratcheted up tensions between the West and Russia, solidifying plans for a 5,000-member “rapid reaction force” that could be quickly deployed to the Russian border.

The annual end-of-the-year meeting was convened amid heated charges exchanged between Moscow on the one side and Washington and the major European powers on the other that military measures taken by the opposed side were dangerously destabilizing Europe.

Under the plans discussed in Brussels, an interim “spearhead” force is to be put in place early next year, with troops initially provided by Germany, Norway and the Netherlands, and with air, sea and other logistical support as well as Special Forces units supplied by the Pentagon. By 2016, a permanent full brigade-strength rapid reaction force is to be in place, with the capability of deploying to Russia’s doorstep within 48 hours to “deter and defend” in any crisis.

“We are protecting our allies and supporting our partners,” the Norwegian secretary general of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, declared.

The new force was only one facet of what is emerging as a concerted campaign of US and NATO military pressure against Moscow. The Western military alliance has also vowed to conduct stepped-up patrols by warplanes over the Baltic Sea and to carry out a continuous rotation of US and Western European troops in and out of Poland and the former Soviet Baltic republics in a series of never-ending “exercises.”

The past 3 presidents were puppets.  Bush I and Reagan were part of the crew pulling strings and did not see themselves as puppets.  The last president who tried to rock the boat got assassinated.

It was easy to see when Obama learned about his TRUE status.  It was right after the 2008 election, still in November, when he got his first real briefing as president-elect.  You could see his posture change overnight, and his hair started going gray even before December of that year.  It was rather dramatic.

If, as they stated, Russia will respond Asymmetrically, then perhaps it's time to have a Rapid Response Force and Naval Base in balmy Venezuela.

That's just to "deter instability and provocation from regional aggressors", who might want to cause V to default early, and thus get their paws on V's yellow and black gold.  Such aggressors seem particularly active in countries with gold reserves and energy supplies, and someone has to be a real beat cop, and not the typical "Chicago cop".

I thought about that, but realized that Cuba has no oil, gas or gold to protect from the Goldman Sacks & Pillage.

Given that Venezuela has a lot of beauty queens (Miss World, Miss Universe), it might be good for the morale of the troops to have them stationed there.  Otherwise Venezuelans might soon be electing 'Miss Oil'.

Just a couole things for you guys:

Before Chavez bit the dust, he proposed Russia to set up an airforce base in Venezuela after the Tu-160 White Swan visited the country. In Cuba, Gazprom operates there.

As recent, Shoigu (defence minister of Russia) proposed that Russia set up military bases in new and former allied nations. Nicaragua is recent one as Russia is using troops to protect the building of the new Canal. Dunno about the airforce base in Venezuela, but it is in consideration. As well as a naval base in Vietnam (reuse cam rhan bay) and reopen the intelligence center in Cuba.

Russia has been planning to, but wont till budget is in place after sap2020 (where majority of modernization of Russian military is taking place). After 2020, we may see more than just arctic bases.

ZATO can stage forward elements into these areas bordering Russia. However, they are at the end of a long logistics trail; Russia has an advantage in armor quantity, possibly quality, and short supply lines.

Is this ZATO deployment window dressing or part of a longer-range plan to force Russia into a hot confrontation with the ZATO forces? If so, this would allow TPTB to sacrifice their ZATO forces and initiate a much wider conflict.

This will probably lead to nuclear confrontation.

These ZATO moves deserve close examination. Defending the puppet Ukraine government is but an excuse to try and tighten the noose around Russia.

TPTB also need to guard their rear from a revolt by US citizens to stall their plans. The tact they are using now, judging by the ZMSM is to promote race war to divide the population, then possibly use the UN Arms Treaty to disarm the population. Chalky will sign the Treaty into law by EO. Congress will not oppose.

If this succeeds, TPTB will have unfettered opportunities to force a confrontation with Russia. With race war and the Second Amendment under attack, the US population will be too diverted to prevent a confrontation with Russia.

Putin is incredibly popular in Russia. To remove him means to Balkanize Russia which means war. That means we all will be "removed" before he is. The creeping aggression and buildup to war seems to be from the west and people, outside of your little bubble, are waking up to that. This is the grand chess game to rule the 21st century. We could have cooperation between west and east as we did just two short years ago, but the true rulers want it all, regardless of lives lost. I'm not a "Putin Fan!" I'm just a guy with children who sees this slow move to war. Let's hope at the least it remains cold, but collateral damage is becoming increasingly less of a worry to those that may desire to sacrifice you and I.

I look forward to the down votes by the troll army here.

These commanders aren’t making these decisions. It’s a political decision from the banker empire to use a military buildup, hoping the world will surmise that the buildup is because Russia is threatening and is a menace to the world.  They’re hoping for leverage to increase sanctions and for the Europeans to clamp down on Russia and push Europe eastward, giving more strength to Ukraine.

...so that Europeans will scream, “Oh my gosh, a war is coming. We need to do something about Russia.”

We’ll have a war if Russia attacks; and that’s not likely. And, then, the US/NATO won’t get by with 100 tanks; it will need 1000s.

One of the worst warmongers is John Mauldin who quoted Vitaliy Katsenelson in "Putin’s World: Why Russia’s Showdown with the West Will Worsen" recently on Market Oracle:

“Comparing Putin with Hitler, as one of my Russian friends put it, is "absolutely abominable" because it diminishes Hitler's atrocities and overstates by a mile what Putin has accomplished to date. Yet it feels as if we are at a Putin-of-1936 moment. Will he turn into a Putin of 1939 and invade other countries? I don't know. But the events of the past nine months have shown Putin's willingness to defy international law and seize the advantage on the ground, betting – correctly so far – that the West won't call his bluff.”

Vitaliy Katsenelson and his family came to the United States in 1991 after the fall of the USSR. Katsenelson is now Chief Investment Officer at Investment Management Associates in Denver, Colo.  According to Wikipedia: “Vatsenelson is Jewish.[1] He immigrated to the United States from Murmansk, Russia in 1991.[2] From 2001 to 2007 Katsenelson taught investment classes at the University of Colorado at Denver Graduate School of Business.” –

>>>This anti-Putin anti-Russian warmongering seems to be a Jewish initiative. They're all over it. What's going on? Seriously.

IMHO most Jews are "normal people", but Jewish movers-and-shakers have at times actually expressed publicly what I think explains both the current anti-Putin, and prior anti-WASP, position of Jewish opinion-makers:  Jews are safer when they are just one of many components in a very mixed society, rather than as a prominant (and very successful) minority group in an otherwise homogenous society.

The ideal nation, therefore, should not have a strong ethnic identity unless, of course, that nation is Israel.  Anything that weakens the solidarity within historic ethno-states is therefore (drumroll please).... "Good for the Jews".

IMHO, Russia is a resource-rich prize whch has not yet been brought fully into the big tent of International/Cosmopolitan Finance.  Russia is still too "Russian", and should be subject to the same powers that rule in London and New York....

This is what Gen Smedley Butler USMC had to say about his military service at the beginning of the last century:

I spent 33 years and four months in active military service and during that period I spent most of my time as a high class muscle man for Big Business, for Wall Street and the bankers. In short, I was a racketeer, a gangster for capitalism. I helped make Mexico and especially Tampico safe for American oil interests in 1914. I helped make Haiti and Cuba a decent place for the National City Bank boys to collect revenues in. I helped in the raping of half a dozen Central American republics for the benefit of Wall Street. I helped purify Nicaragua for the International Banking House of Brown Brothers in 1902–1912. I brought light to the Dominican Republic for the American sugar interests in 1916. I helped make Honduras right for the American fruit companies in 1903. In China in 1927 I helped see to it that Standard Oil went on its way unmolested. Looking back on it, I might have given Al Capone a few hints. The best he could do was to operate his racket in three districts. I operated on three continents.

That is an extraordinarily dangerous assumption.

I'm not privy to the inner circles of the West or Russia, but I strongly suspect that what is viewed by Washington as a form of blood-sport, or mere political maneuver, on European turf is viewed by the Russians, government and people, as an existential threat to their future.

A bad miscalculation in America's warmongering could indeed cause the Russians to launch, and it's certainly not a matter of who does or doesn't have "balls" enough to bluff an opposing gamer.

If I can keep score well enough, this contingent would bring the total amount of US Tanks and Armoured Fighting vehicles in Eastern Europe to over 200. (Last week, it was reported that the US "had" 50 tanks in Poland.)

In isolation, such a battle group is a very potent fighting force, which -if deftly deployed and skillfully operated- could hold up a far superior enemy force...for about 48 hours. Unfortunately, there is no indication that any reinforcements of significant number and combat potential could arrive for weeks afterward.

So this is more about symbolism and "tripwires" than about effective defensive capability. It is not realistic to think that Russia will attack either the Baltics or Poland. If a ground war involving frontline units of the Russian army occurs, it will be in Ukraine. And, If or when the Russians act, they will employ the maximum degree of surprise to their advantage. Expect no warnings, no buildups, just action.

Make no mistake about it; the Russians will not turn tail like the Iraqi army, they will fight to the finish. Furthermore, what do they think China's reaction is going to be to Western military aggression in their neck of the woods? And lastly, this is a highly weaponized nuclear power. These people have no new ideas.  This is just a replay of the old Cold War strategy. i.e. force the USSR to allocate an excessive proportion of their economy to defense, and wait for domestic discontent to cause a collapse (empty shelf syndrome).

For a variety of reasons it's unlikely to succeed, and may even hasten the collapse of NATO, but that won't stop them from trying.   This is what you get when you replace strategic thinkers with political hacks.

Whoo Hooo!  It's WAR!

Let us figure this out.  100 tanks, 1/2 mile per gallon.  Russia, 5592 miles wide.  So, 10000 gallons of fuel per tank.  Russia has 15,500 tanks, so you need 30,000 rounds of armor piercing ammo (in case you miss once in a while).   300 rounds per tank.

40 miles an hour, makes it 150 hours to scoot and shoot your way across Russia.

This is too easy.

By now even the most retardo Russophobe at zh has heard the story of the USS Donald Cook in the Black Sea on April 12, 2014, 8 months ago.

http://www.voltairenet.org/article185860.html

a Russian Su-24tactical bomber flew over the vessel triggering an incident that, according to several media reports, completely demoralized its crew, so much so that the Pentagon issued a protest [1].

To the best of my knowledge, this story has not been denied by the Pentagon, who fear that the Russians may then offer to prove it to any other NATO navy and a watching world.  Neither NATO nor the Pentagon are shy about making false claims.

The Russians have declared that their jet passed over the USS Cook and disabled all the electronics aboard the ship causing it to limp pathetically into a Turkish (or Romanian) port for repairs.  The Navy's cover story was that the Cook damaged its propeller on some rocks, etc.

IF THE RUSSIAN CLAIM IS TRUE, AND MOSCOW CAN INTERFERE WITH THE INTERNAL COMMUNICATIONS OF A GAZILLION DOLLAR AEGIS DESTROYER, WOULDN'T KNOCKING OUT THE COMPUTERS ON SOME BRADLEY OR ABRAMS TANKS BE QUITE A BIT EASIER?

the US has ECM, and probably better ECM than anyone. the fact a Russian plane may have disrupted the system on a US ship is neither here nor there, although it is likely a provocation, just as locking onto US warplanes with radar directed missiles is considered a provocation (such a policy was sufficent to drive the NOFLY zone protocol over Iraq) it remains a fuzzy point of logic, locking on is not the same as firing a missile.

US policy is to fire on any site than locks its radar system on a US warplane (if the site belongs to Iraq, or Syria), but if Iran did the same thing there might be a different protocol. if you want to start a war this is where you go. why Bush or Obama didnt apply the same NOFLYZONE rules to the straight of Hormuz and the Iranian side of that water body i am not sure. it would be justified by US past behavior. they could push back the Iranian systems very easily, shrink the influence of Tehran, and not raise too much noise at the UN, freedom of the seas and so on. doing such things without an endgame in mind is dangerous and it always implies the countdown to boots on the ground is on. should it happen in Ukraine the same countdown begins. (E Ukraine locks onto US warplanes, US warplanes take out the site. the Malaysia airliner shootdown is probably this centurys Gulf of Tonkin, (arent you glad LBJ created the civil rights act, its come full circle Democrats, now the poor oppressed minority can become elected president and get a lot of people killed in a foolish war, now thats progress)

The Russian Khibiny has actually been tested on the American navy.

ECM may or may not work. It has certainly not been used on the Russian military and proved worthy.

the US has ECM, and probably better ECM than anyone.

Respectfully, you are going to have to prove that.  And this too.

the fact a Russian plane may have disrupted the system on a US ship is neither here nor there.

It's easier to sneak in Agents Provacateur this way.  What the hell do we have to do to get someone to attack us, for Pete's sake!
