The Most Depressing Time Of The Year In The Most Depressed Nation On The Planet

Tyler Durden's picture

Submitted by Michael Snyder via The End of The American Dream blog,

Did you know that the rate of suicide is highest during this time of the year and that 45 percent of all Americans dread the Christmas season?  We are constantly being told that Christmas is the happiest time of the year, but mental health professionals tell us that the exact opposite is true.  For large numbers of Americans, the period between Thanksgiving and Christmas is filled with stress, anxiety, loneliness and family squabbles.  And for most people, the reality of the holidays never even comes close to matching up with the glittering ideal portrayed in movies and on television.  As a result, depression tends to spike during the month of December.  And of course Americans are quite depressed most of the time anyway.  In fact, one out of every ten Americans is on an antidepressant as you read this article.  No other nation in the world even approaches that level.  So right now we are in the midst of the most depressing time of the year in the most depressed nation on the entire planet.  What is wrong with this picture?

A lot of people start to feel down this time of the year, and they don’t realize that there are millions of others that are going through the exact same thing.  The following excerpt from a Psychology Today article explains that this is something that happens every Christmas season…

We are told that Christmas, for Christians, should be the happiest time of year, an opportunity to be joyful and grateful with family, friends and colleagues. Yet, according to the National Institute of Health, Christmas is the time of year that people experience the highest incidence of depression. Hospitals and police forces report the highest incidences of suicide and attempted suicide. Psychiatrists, psychologists and other mental health professionals report a significant increase in patients complaining about depression. One North American survey reported that 45% of respondents dreaded the festive season.

So when we get depressed, what do we do?

Well, we do what we always do for depression.

We start popping pills.

Today, America is the most drugged up nation on the face of the Earth by a wide margin.  Just consider the following numbers…

-Americans account for about five percent of the global population, but we consume more than 50 percent of the pharmaceutical drugs.  At the moment, the number one selling pharmaceutical drug in America is called Thorazine.  It is used as a supplement to other antidepressant drugs.

-According to the New York Times, more than 30 million Americans are currently taking antidepressants.

-The number of people that are clinically diagnosed with depression is growing at a rate of 20 percent annually.

-The rate of antidepressant use among middle aged women is far higher than for the population as a whole.  It is hard to believe, but right now one out of every four women in their 40s and 50s is taking an antidepressant medication.

-The percentage of women taking antidepressants in the United States is significantly higher than in any other country in the world.

-Children in the United States are three times more likely to be prescribed antidepressants than children in Europe are.

-If all of these antidepressants are helping, then why are more Americans killing themselves?  The suicide rate for Americans between the ages of 35 and 64 increased by nearly 30 percent between 1999 and 2010.  The number of Americans that die by suicide is now greater than the number of Americans that die as a result of car accidents every year.

Sadly, most Americans have absolutely no idea that the latest scientific studies indicate that many of these drugs could actually be quite dangerous.

For example, one recent study found that children that take antidepressants are more likely to attempt suicide

High doses of brain-altering chemicals marketed as “anti-depressants” increase the likelihood of self-harm, rather than decreasing the risk, say Harvard health scientists in a study that analyzed data on 162,625 people.

Drugs known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI’s) may raise the risk of suicidal behavior in children and young adults, according to the analysis. SSRI’s are the chemical substances which make up the antidepressants Prozac and Zoloft.

“Our findings offer clinicians an additional incentive to avoid initiating pharmacotherapy at high-therapeutic doses,” Harvard School of Public Health researchers said.

Another recent study found that pregnant mothers that take antidepressants are more likely to have babies with brain defects

Almost one in five children born to mothers taking antidepressants during pregnancy have a brain defect – called a “Chiari type 1 malformation” – according to a groundbreaking study by researchers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

The study, titled Rate of Chiari I Malformation in Children of Mothers with Depression with and without Prenatal SSRI Exposure, was published May 19 in the peer-reviewed journal Neuropsychopharmacology.

The researchers found that “children of depressed mothers treated with a group of antidepressants called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) during pregnancy were more likely to develop Chiari type 1 malformations than were children of mothers with no history of depression,” according to their press statement.

Perhaps popping pills is not the solution after all.

If you are battling depression, one of the key things to do is to look at your diet.  What we eat and what we drink plays a massive role in how we feel and how our brain functions.  If you start eating better, your life will improve in a multitude of ways.

And certainly there are natural ways to battle depression.  If you want to learn more about this, Natural News has some great articles on the subject.

But more important than all of those things is the fact that most Americans today simply do not have anything to live for.

These days, most people just seem to be living for themselves.  They chase one form of entertainment after another, hoping that something will eventually fill the gaping holes that are constantly aching inside their hearts.  Many go to their graves never finding the fulfillment that they were desperately searching for all of their lives.

You have got to have something to live for that really matters. No matter how broken your life is right now, the key is to never, ever, ever give up.  As long as you keep fighting, there is always hope that things can be turned around.

So don’t give in to depression this Christmas season.

Yes, this world is an incredibly messed up place.

Yes, things are going to get a lot worse in the years ahead.

But that doesn’t mean that the future has to be bleak for you.

The best chapters of your life could be right around the corner, so don’t you ever, ever give up.

Nothing, I mean NOTHING cheers me up more than sitting down to a great big slab of dead cow, cold and blue on the inside and charred black on the outside.  Preferably accompanied by a glass of ice cold gin with a couple of olives in it.  BEST antidepressant in the world!

Thanks Banger. That's some holiday cheer to this old guy.
I'm too busy, all of the sudden, to be depressed. More daylight would help, that is a downer this time of year.
While the hope was always to be able to slow down and use more brains than brawn at this point in my life, I'm in the field. Now really, I do have some younger bucks, who want to learn, doing most of the "heavy lifting".
Rank does have it's privileges.

For those interested, I'm in construction and commercial real estate. We build, own and manage our own portfolio. The current owner is selling, wishing to play in the sun for a few years, before his clock winds down. The new owner, younger and full of big dreams, is being mentored in to the system. It's a two year or so process. Some projects, that have taken a year and a half, along with big bucks, have been approved.
One is a hundred unit apartment complex. My wagon is hitched to this guy for the future. My job is to make this dude wealthy. I'll live good and get to build multi- million dollar projects, which I live to do. He wants money and wealth. I just want enough to be comfortable and like an artist with a new canvas, take vacant land and build a working building. Being Field Marshall on a big construction project feeds the ego, as a bonus.
Hope springs eternal?

SAM-E freed me from a lifetime of depression. I am not joking. SAM-E did what SSRIs, antidepressants, St John's Wort, and psychotherapy failed to do. SAM-E, vitamin B6 B12 and folic acid (they work together).

i think with the USD going up and up and up and the market look out. This chart here sums it up pretty well. ==> http://bitly.com/1rdUK8e

Everyone thinks this is the bottom in GOLD, and SILVER, but the rally in the USD is not letting up. More money has been lost trying to call the tops and bottoms in gold, and silver over the years than anywhere else. If you go back to the year 0 AD gold was low, and has been going up ever since.

I think people buying gold and silver here thinking they got a bargain will be SHITTING in their pants come early 2015. Could be much lower by then. But I am still buying physical bullion, and coins every 6 months regardless. Timed investment like this, no matter what price is doing will always win in the end.

On a personal level I cannot think of a more horrible way to die. Ebola? Cop taser? Getting mugged on the street and being left for dead? No way.

After reading Silvia Plath back in the 70's (required reading for English) I know that being in a state of HOPELESSNESS must be the worse thing imaginable. There is allways hope.

God help us all.

Hope is another way of saying that you are betting on a long shot which will not pay off.

Hope is the absolute denial of all Empirical Evidence to the contrary.

Hope is that fleeting instant after falling from the cliff that somehow the Laws of Nature will be suspended...just for you because, somehow, you deserve it.

Yes all is lost if one abandons hope.

But after you take the Red Pill you have denied yourself the luxuries of fantastic delusion and are confronted by the dismal reality.

As there is no hope then all is indeed lost.

I respect the opinion that this aspect of our reality is pretty sad.

We are all too smart for our own good sometimes though, I fear. Sometimes I kick myself for spending so much mental time even thinking about "other peoples' reality" - fact of the matter is, I am doing well (as I'm sure most of you guys are) and my social and family lives are healthy and fulfilling.

I absolutely love this website for pointing out what CNBC and Bloomberg have long failed to point out - the real side of the coin. Let's not forget however, that nothing is built on dwelling or negativity. Enjoy your life - contribute to the causes you know to be just and correct. Let's not waste our precious time here in disgust or hate - let's just fix the damn world from the ground up.

Sadly we can't rely on the majority to do so. It's on us, let's not forget that by idling in negative rigteousness.

The worse thing about Christmas is trying to get the perfect gifts for others, then going through the excitement of wrapping it and giving them the gift - only to see their disappointment (or lack of similar excitement) when they open it!

The worst thing about Christmas is Chirstmas.

Christ was not born in the dead of winter in the Holy Land.

During the Winter in the Holy Land it is fucking COLD. The Animals are in the caves and stalls with their owners. The mangers are full of grain as there is not any plant life growing.

Bethlehem is roughly at the same latitude as Phoenix. All of the fields are dead. Grazing land is BARREN.

If you READ THE BIBLE the Shepherds were out...IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT...grazing their roaming flocks. They are not out in the cold. They did not do that in the cold back then. They are not that damned crazy to do that today.

Jesus was a FIRST BORN SPRING LAMB...the ideal SACRIFICE. He was born in the Spring. The whole season is based on a LIE FROM HELL.

So BAH HUMBUG!!!

Go and celebrate your LIE FROM HELL.

Then SATAN Claus just compounds it. YOU LIE TO YOUR CHILDREN. Now that is fucking low. You claim that you love them BY LYING THROUGH YOUR FUCKING TEETH TO THEM.

Then you wonder why they don't trust you when they wise up in the later years.

Yeah. Go and celebrate your LIE FROM HELL.

FUCK CHRISTMAS!!!

This might be the last truly 'jolly' Christmas for awhile, at least in modern consumerism terms, but you are right: family and friends are where it's at, and where we will need to be to get through these coming times.

Just 'stack, stack, stack' - and I'm not talking just metals but REAL things: food; seeds (non-GMO); water filters; supplies like matches and tea lights and candles; medicines and first-aid goods; clothes and blankets; etc. That's the stuff that will get us through these coming times. And don't forget: stack as much 40-proof (minimum!) alky you can!!

And don't forget: you can stack as high as anyone, but it means nothing if you don't also stack lead...and even less, if you don't let the tears flow. That's the only way to clear the road for joy and love to come in...

Allow it, idling and complaining and thinking that owning physical metal is some sort of hedge against it (dumbest fucking thing anyone could ever truly believe).. or spend your time on Earth producing, contributing, loving, sharing, empathizing, and fostering success and evolution?

I have little time for those who wallow or choose to believe that because circumstances could be dire, they are entitled to sulk and manifest an "us vs them" mentality.

This world has always been challenging. Grow the fuck up and rise to the occasion.

I used to enjoy "It's A Wonderful Life" with Jimmy Stewart; still a great movie.

Problem being the Bride I gave my life to turned Her back on me - and my Kids are now away from me and on their own.

No home or Bride or Kids to come home to; no angel tapping on my shoulder, just my doppelganger who stole my "Wonderful Life" and sent me to Potterville.

So who shall ring the bell for the angel, and why do I keep trying?

Well, I do it for my kids and myself and those less fortunate than me; even though that worthless prick Potter took over the town then turned it over to Biff when he passed.

Fuck Biff, fuck Corzine, fuck Wall Street, and fuck Potterville.

Rot in Hell you son's of bitches.

I have an unopened bottle of prozac or zoloft from the VA.

I forget which. Recently my therapist there said :"Glad you did not take them. Lithium is better for you, since you're bipolar."

Biploar? Never thought of myself as a polar explorer. Think I'll pass on the lithium and stick to therapy from the LCS.

It's only depressing for Commies who've yet to figure out a way to make it to America.

The proof's in the pudding:  every year a few Lee Harvey Oswalds forsake their American citizenship for Russian citizenship, but in that same year THOUSANDS OF RUSSIANS AND UKRAINIANS RUSH TO AMERICA!

Ah, ya gotta love math!

Not only use but there ae around 400 doctors that commit suicide each year, the size of the population of a medical school.  One doctor created a retreet and treatment center for them.

Also when bankers commit suicide, the news is all over it, but let a couple MDs, interns jump to their death in NYC in unrelated incidences within a week of each other, they want to cover that up mostly.

I'm 75. Lost my wife 10 months ago after her 12 year fight with cancer (NHL). Fell in love with her, literally, at first sight 51 years ago, was the luckiest guy in the room for the last 47 years after we went out on our first date. Still in love with her, always will be. I was always a pretty upbeat guy, like some of the posters on this list trying to buck up some of the depressed, but now I know what real depression is, and cheery platitudes and (this is fight club after all) go fuck yourself whiney assholes posts are both in the same bag of never getting whacked with real fucking depression.

If it was not for my functional family - 2 sons, 1 daughter, 2 daughters in law, and 4 grandchildren that truly love one another and get along together fabulously, I'm pretty sure I would have just said screw it and left this place. The homestead can get pretty damn empty sometimes. Firsts are hard: first anniversary, first birthday, first Thanksgiving, first Christmas (coming up) without her. My small rural community has also been very supportive and helpful, as is my Buddhist sanga, so I am not without resources, but trust me: depression is a real bitch. My drug of choice is California Sauvignon Blanc, lots of it, which also helps some.

I would not wish this hellacious disease on anyone, and it is truly dis ease.

One day at a time.

Nobody for Prez:

Your post here really touched my heart man. I wish you the very best Christmas with what sounds like a wonderful family.  Hug those grandkids tight and make sure to enjoy a nice dry glass of Sauvignon for me (I'm more of an "Old Vine" Zinfandel guy myself).

This may come as an odd thing to say, but I very much so envy your life.  Not the pain, which obviously we all can do without, but the fullness with which you have lived and continue to do so.

As 28 year old seasonally employed man that makes $24,000 (or $26,000 it I can find side work), has a worthless college degree in History, and no gal to come home to. I can only hope that by reaching your age (if I haven't been shot, die of illness, or starve in the crazy times ahead) my life may be as full as yours has been.

The women are so worthless today (fat, slutty, stupid, barren, and mean), the jobs are terrible (constant swing shifts, no vacations, zero benefits, no recognition for one's labor), and the chance of owning an apartment let alone a house is nearly impossible ($400,000 median home price, property taxes nearly half my annual income, and zoning laws that make your home merely a sleeping place and not a man's castle).

The chances of a life that includes a wife and a family are so slim it nearly drives me to insane some days.  Although some folks criticize the youth of today I'd challenge them to truly walk a day in my shoes...and try not to blow their brains out from the sheer mental stress I face each day...I'm a miracle in jeans and a t-shirt  when I'm able to walk down the street given the level of shit I've put up with over the past 5 years: no one to love, no money, no home, and in short: no real future to look forward to.  All I have is my health (which apparently the gov't is so concerned about they made it too expensive for me to buy insurance).

You have a great life: let me say that again. You have a great life!  And I would trade all the years ahead of me today for the rich years you have already lived and those you have yet to come.  At least you have the incredible precious memories of a love that spanned 5 rich and full decades! You also have  a wonderful family as a product of love that continues to grow and make the world a bit brighter.   Love begetting love...you are so blessed.

I wish you only the best in your years to come!

Old thread I had to go back to. I upvoted you, because you are absolutley right - I have a 29 year old daughter with a degree in Anthropology, for openers. And I had a great life. And all you young people have inherited a facist state that provides no opporutunity for anything other than becoming a debt slave.

I am both embarresed for what my country has become, and ashamed of what I am leaving my children and grandchildren.

I was a poor boy that made good, worked my way through college (damn near impossible now) and had a good life. I served my country as an Airborne, Ranger, Infantry officer; and watched Kennedy's death and the rise of the banker's grip on our once great (yes, it really was) country, and I weep.

You are right. I had a great life. I was the luckiest guy on the planet.

But now the bill comes due.

@Michael Snyder

You have got to have something to live for that really matters.

For me that would be Viedoklis.  I love reading that Latvian guy's posts.  He gives the word doofus a new meaning.

How can anybody be depressed after reading what he has to say?

I fall asleep laughing on nights when he hyperposts.

Peak depression due to peak cognitive dissonance. Christmas is the time when the oldest lies are laid bare and we are told to love them anyway.

Chrismas is the time of peak disillusionment.

Christmas can be a drag only because the meaning of Christmas has been lost for them.  For those who worship Christ, there is no sadness at Christmas. For those who believe Christmas was somehow meant to be a shopping spree, then, yes, I can see how the season, but not the reason, is a downer.  Giving gifts is a yearlong joy, and not a contest to see who can do his best to duplicate everything they see in advertising at this time of year.

45% dread the Christmas season. 98% dread the other part of the year moar.

People hate Christmas because they've been made to forget what it's really about. It's become a bunch of days off from work just so you have to do other shit for somebody else instead.

You recommend, "Natural News has some great articles".  You're right, naturalnews.com is a wealth of knowledge for anyone who wants to understand nutrition's role in health.

We all have the power to detoxify the poisons out of our bodies that make us depressed and anxious.  Knowledge is power.

Few American's realize that our health and money were captured nearly 100 years ago in the 1913 Fed Act and this EU Organized Crime Cabal has been handicapping our ability to think clearly and control our health.

We are a captured nation incapable of ejecting our Fed foreign rulers.  Through toxic injury from vaccines, fluoride and GMOs to name a few toxic agents, we have become a handicapped nation completely unaware of our capture.
