Ukraine Goes Full Orwell, Unleashes "Ministry Of Truth"

Tyler Durden's picture

Officially called "The Ministry of Information Policy," Mashable reports the Ukraine government has established a department that critics are calling the 'Ministry of Truth' in a dystopian reference to George Orwell's 1984 (apparent instruction manual). Run by a close ally of President Poroshenko's close ally, while its main objective appears to be confronting Russia’s formidable propaganda machine, the Ministry is likely to also restrict free speech and inhibit journalists' work - particularly in war-torn eastern Ukraine, according to observers.

As Mashable reports,

At a demonstration outside parliament, Ukrainian journalists decried the new ministry, which deputies approved in the Verkhovna Rada late on Tuesday, along with the rest of the country’s Cabinet of Ministers.

About 40 journalists and activists from Ukrainian watchdog groups Chesno (Honest) and Stop Censorship! held posters that read “Hello, Big Brother." They urged lawmakers entering the parliament ahead of Tuesday’s session to vote against appointing Stets as its head.

The creation of the ministry comes on the heels of critical reports from journalists and rights groups about its use of controversial weapons in eastern Ukraine, as well as possible war crimes committed by its armed forces.

...

Ukraine's government is clearly frustrated with by its lack of success in disseminating its messages. “You must understand, we are being killed by [Russian] guns as well as their propaganda,” a top security official told Mashable when explaining why he supported the creation of the ministry.

A report released last month by The Interpreter website describes just how Russian propaganda works, and how effectively it is being used as a weapon of the Kremlin. The report outlines a “hybrid war” that combines disinformation “to sow confusion via conspiracy theories and proliferate falsehoods” with “covert and small-scale military operations.”

Not everyone is buying into this...

A senior official in the Presidential Administration, who spoke anonymously because he feared repercussions from officials for talking to a journalist, said he was “very concerned” about the ministry and how it would be used.

“Honestly, I’m not sure such a ministry is needed,” the official said, adding that others inside the administration have also questioned the move.

"The way to fight Russian propaganda is with honestly and transparency, not trying to beat Russia at its own game."

But dictatorship appears to remain...

The Ministry of Information Policy was pushed through with little notice and even less debate on the parliament floor. That could be because the president himself pushed the concept on members of his party, the largest faction in parliament, and has great sway over the ruling coalition.

Details on how the ministry will operate are murky...

No documents were made available to the public or deputies, and Stets did not reply to Mashable's requests for comment. But Romaniuk fears the government has given itself "carte blanche."

Reporters Without Borders said it “firmly opposes” the information ministry. “Putting the government in charge of ‘information policy’ would be major retrograde step that would open the way to grave excesses,” said Christophe Deloire, the watchdog organization's secretary-general.

“In a democratic society, the media should not be regulated by the government. The creation of an information ministry is the worst of all possible responses to the serious challenges that the government is facing."

Journalists demonstrating at parliament likened the move to taking a step “back to the USSR.” Several held signs that combined the Soviet Union’s hammer and sickle with the Nazi swastika.

“This is a fascist move,” one demonstrator told an observing who was arguing in support of the ministry. She said it would only lend fodder to Russia’s argument that Kiev is now being led by a “fascist junta.”

But the leader of the new ministry explained...

"I see it this way: different states with different historical and cultural experiences in times of crisis came to need to create a body of executive power that would control and manage the information security of the country," Stets wrote.

According to Stets, none of the current state structures could efficiently handle those tasks.

“The information and communications space remain uncoordinated now, full of contradictions and influence of foreign agents, and under conditions of geopolitical wars becomes a weak part of the country, a subject of enemy attacks,” he added.

Former Obama press secretary/official liar Jay Carney is available, his job at CNN has flexible hours and no one is banging down the doors to hire him as a guest speaker.  Of course, there is a problem, Carney will want to be paid in US dollars.  Besides that, Carney does not have dual citizenship, a New World Order requirement for newly hired top Ukraine officials.

BTW.  In bed reading last night and wanted to glimpse at what markets were doing in Asia.  So mindlessly trolling through the channels when I stumbled across CNN.  Like MSNBC I cannot watch that for more than just moments before my intelligence is insulted, greatly.  (No wonder viewership is a problem, no?)
But I noticed the banner heading.  Something about....

"US and Iran's Shared ISIS enemy"

Like WTF propaganda fling is that shit?  With sound off, it was amazing.  Scene after scene of jets from both the US and Iran flying about, bombs dropping, carrier launches and arrestings.  Talk about Orwell's 5 Minutes of Hate!

Thought I'd been transported to another universe.

BUT.... Could only portend one thing!
CNN being DC's Official Propaganda TV Messenger (Like the NYT in print) probably means that we're going to partner with Iran in the ME.
Betchabetchabetcha...
And lo and behold.  Hours on another news site, article about Bammy starting discussions about sanctions on Israel while lifting sanctions on Iran.

Not too nontransparent, no?

And you do not think the population of these regions, is "the Ukrainians the nation."
Well, who do you think they is - Russians?
Then why do not you give this Russians decide their own fate? Do you think that they prisoners of the neo-Nazi Ukraine?
Or do you think. that the nationality of these people is called "separatists"?

Putin says foes hope to dismember Russia; ruble falls

(Reuters) - President Vladimir Putin accused Russia's enemies on Thursday of seeking to carve it up and destroy its economy to punish it for becoming strong, but said his country would rise to any challenge.

In a fiercely patriotic state of the union speech, the Kremlin leader trumpeted his annexation of Ukraine's Crimea peninsula, praised the Russian people for their strength, accused the West of "pure cynicism" in Ukraine and said economic sanctions must drive Russians to develop their own economy.

"We are ready to meet any challenge of the times and win," he declared to applause from an audience of 1,000 dignitaries, almost all of them loyal supporters.

But the ruble fell as he delivered a speech that showed no sign of a retreat from policies that have brought his country to confrontation with the West unseen since the Cold War.

Disappointing the hopes of many investors, he produced no grand plan to pull the economy out of a crisis aggravated by falling oil prices and Western sanctions over his policies toward Ukraine.

Instead, he shifted blame for Russia's problems on the West, accusing "enemies of yesterday" of trying to bring a new Iron Curtain down around Russia. Foes, he said, wished on Russia the same fate as suffered by Yugoslavia in the 1990s.

"There is no doubt they would have loved to see the Yugoslavia scenario of collapse and dismemberment for us – with all the tragic consequences it would have for the peoples of Russia. This has not happened. We did not allow it," he said.

So determined was the West to destroy Russia, he said, that sanctions would have been imposed even without the crisis in Ukraine.

"I am certain that if all this did not take place... they would come up with another reason to contain Russia's growing capabilities," he said, flanked by a Russian flag on either side. "Whenever anyone thinks Russia has become strong, they resort to this instrument."

Even when he pledged to keep Russia open to the world, he adopted an aggressive posture: "We will never pursue the path of self-isolation, xenophobia, suspicion and search for enemies. All this is a manifestation of weakness, while we are strong and self-confident."

UNDER PRESSURE OVER THE ECONOMY

The former KGB spy, 62, ignored pressure to show he has an answer for Russia's worsening economy, even though officials acknowledged this week the country is headed for recession.

He promised an amnesty for capital repatriated to the country, saying Russians who chose to bring money back would face no questions over how they earned it. Money from a national wealth fund would be used to support domestic banks.

But this failed to satisfy markets or critics. Tim Ash, an analyst at Standard Bank, said in a note he saw no new big ideas to help the economy or ease market pressure on Russian assets: "This is old school, Cold War stuff."

Sergey Aleksashenko, a former deputy head of the central bank, vented frustration with Putin's failure to tackle the economy: "There is nothing to discuss and nothing to expect. Everything will continue as it is. And that suits him."

Another analyst, Dmitry Trenin of the Carnegie Moscow Centre, said Russia should now brace itself for a very difficult 4-5 years in which the "stakes are exceedingly high."

Political commentators say Putin is likely to continue whipping up nationalist sentiment and hostility to the West to mask Russia's economic problems.

Signaling no change of heart on Ukraine, Putin said Crimea, which his troops seized after a Moscow-backed president was toppled in Kiev, held sacred meaning for Russians, forever.

He said the conflict that has followed in east Ukraine, in which heavily armed Moscow-backed separatists have seized a region they call "New Russia", proved Moscow's policy was right.

Putin's popularity is still sky high and he has not faced any big protests over the economic decline. But the plunge in the rouble ends the currency stability that had hitherto been the crowning achievement of his 15 year rule.

He rose to power in the wake of a currency collapse and default, and owes much of his popularity to the comparison between the stability of his rule and the chaos of the 1990s, when the post-Soviet economy was eviscerated by hyperinflation.

The currency has already lost a third of its value this year, capital flight is soaring, the fall in oil prices has blown a hole in state finances, and Russian companies and banks are scrambling to find dollars to pay foreign debts.

How about: After a democratically elected president was subversively and violently overthrown by a USA State Department funded coup orchestrated by Victoria Nudelman (changed her name to Nuland to hide Jewish origin) with a USD$5 billion investment. Victoria Nudelman is married to dual USA/Israeli citizen Robert Kagan, Council on Foreign Relations member, and co-founder of the think-tank "Project for the New American Century" (PNAC), which is “ … dedicated to a few fundamental propositions: That American leadership is good for America and the world”, and Zionist leadership of the USA is even better.

Anyone wants to see a true misdirections statement from the CIA/Hasabara Ministry of Truth just needs to read one of Amerikan Patriot's comments.

Tylers, by allowing this shill on here you're tacitly condoning this misdirection.

The Poles recognize what Ukraine and Georgia have already come to understand: that Russia is trying to cobble together what it can of the failed Soviet state.  It was Vladimir Putin, after all, that wistfully remarked that "the greatest catastrophe of the 20th century was the breakup of the Soviet Union."

In other words, the greatest catastrophe of the 20th century wasn't the 60 million lives lost during WWII, nor was it the tens of millions that died during the Spanish influenza pandemic in the early part of the 20th century.

Rather, the 'catastrophe' was that 300 million folks were liberated from a totalitarian regime and a command economy that together were responsible for untold human misery.

Putin's self-centered, myopic assessment would be laughable if it didn't negatively impact so many lives.

Even better, since they now have americans in government and one as a vp for their gas company, just hire american 'journalists' and give them Ukie citizenship. Problem fixed.

Well, this could hardly make Ukie propaganda worse.

Check that.  I just thought about it for a moment.  This will be run out of some NGO-appendage of the US State Department.  Ukie propaganda is about to get a lot more inept.  Nuland's housekeeper's daughter, dual-citizen Harvard grad with a fellowship at the Kissinger Institute, will be in charge.  Ukie propaganda will only make sense to the echo chamber of inbred elitist Ivy League women who seem to be bred in tanks in East Coast enclaves.  The tone will be moralistic and hectoring, peppered with obvious falsehoods, a lack of sense of geography bordering on a neurological disorder, egregious cultural and factual gaffes and a low sort of viciousness disguised as humor.

You know, Jen Psaki. and similar replicants.

(Naughty me; almost spelled that last word with a "u".)

Since Washington DC is now running Kiev, is it any wonder they have resorted to a Ministry of Truth based on 1984? With the new masters in Kiev in charge, they feel free to practice in Ukraine what is fast in store of us USA citizens.

Never has government been so out of control as now, and never have Americans been so passive in the face of a list of lies, crimes and wars. Sickening feeling is, it is getting worse, and America is still passive.

The ukrainian ministry of true information want you to forget that 200 thousands Poles, Jews, Russians and other Ukrainians, man, women and children were butchered with knifes and axes and burned alive by Ukrainian fascists , banderovites during WWII, hailed now by their american, german and canadian backed, descendants in Kiev regime.

But this genocide will never be recognized by current "civilized ukrainian regime" since, statues were already risen for perpetrators of this crime, such as Bandera, Shukevich, calling them ukrainian heroes. It's like erecting statue of Hitler in Berlin and worship him for his genocide of Jews. They spit in face of humanity. Blasphemy !!!

The thing I don't get, Earthlings, is this: why are tyrannical, freedom-taking "leaders" allowed to function at all these days?

1. We all know who they are thanks to the internet of everything.

2. They are only a few people, whereas we are in the billions.

3. They're not impervious to death.

So why are they still standing? Let's get rid of these tyrants now. Rid the entire planet of them. Don't stop until they're all gone.

Orwell was wrong about a lot of things: he made the Jews the oppressed, not the oppressors. Emmanuel Goldstein is the hero of 1984, the big proponent of Freedom. Bardèche’s vision of the future is much truer than Orwell’s, and his book was written a year earlier than Orwell’s.

Maurice Bardèche’s Nuremberg or the Promised Land is a revisionist classic. . . . That anyone in 1948 could have foreseen so accurately our modern world is to me astounding. Bardèche recognized that the judicial travesty at Nuremberg was not simply an act of vengeance by victors against the vanquished and that what was on trial there was not just the particular German defendants, nor the German nation, nor even National Socialism, but rather nationalism itself: the idea that a people own the land that they have long lived in and have the right to live in it as they wish and to exclude others from living in it if they so wish. It is nationalism in any form which was condemned at Nuremberg.

With amazing prescience Bardèche foresaw in its condemnation the coming of an international system which is first and foremost economic, not political or governmental. Its purpose is to protect an international economic élite, not ordinary persons, or peoples, or nations. It offers the latter lots of rights but no guarantees that these rights will be respected. Its laws are unclear (unlike those of a prince) and broadly unenforceable, but the system does not attempt to enforce them broadly but only selectively. For selected victims punishments are severe. Victims are selected not so much because they have broken laws but because they have offended the “universal conscience,” the conscience created and fostered in us all by the media (Bardèche’s “radio”). Bardèche clearly foresaw the system which we today call “globalism,” although he nowhere uses that term. He also foresaw at least implicitly many other aspects of our world: Third World immigration, the irrational glorification of democracy, loss of sovereignty, humanitarian wars and interference, hate crimes, affirmative action, racial miscegenation and replacement, etc.: “At the bottom of the sanctuary there sits a Negro god. You have all the rights, except to speak evil of the god.” “And, from one end of the world to the other, in perfectly similar cities . . . there will live under similar laws a bastard population, a race of indefinable and gloomy slaves, without genius, without instinct, without voice. . . But this will be the Promised Land.”

In 1949, one year after the publication of Nuremberg or the Promised Land, another prophetic book was published, George Orwell’s novel Nineteen Eighty-Four. In it Orwell describes a scary future in which there is a single party dictatorship, living conditions are drab, food is scarce, people’s thoughts are openly controlled by Big Brother, their words and actions are monitored through “telescreens” which they cannot turn off, they are given no choice over what they view on these screens, there is only one channel on the “telescreens” and one film (always a war film) in the theatres, in one such film refugees trying to escape are shot to the delight of the audience, some of these refugees are Jewish, “the Enemy of the People” is a Jew, Emmanuel Goldstein, who is condemned for “advocating freedom of speech, freedom of the Press, freedom of assembly, freedom of thought,” people are openly taught to hate him and his followers during “Two Minutes Hate” and “Hate Week,” sex is discouraged through a “Junior Anti-Sex League,” the Inner Party is called the “Inner Party,” thoughtcrime is called “thoughtcrime,” Thought Police are called “Thought Police,” the media propagate obvious, self-contradictory lies such as: “War Is Peace,” “Freedom Is Slavery,” “Ignorance Is Strength,” people are told that democracy is “impossible” (although the Party is said to be its “guardian”), capitalism is viewed as a barbarity that has “vanished.”

The world described in 1984 little resembles that in the Occident today. We live in multi-party democracies. Our mainstream media tell us not only that democracy is possible and a very good thing, but that its triumph everywhere is virtually inevitable, an inevitability which we should make every effort to encourage. Living conditions are generally good, food is abundant. Capitalism is alive and well and is promoted as an economic panacea. Our politicians advocate the same things as does Emmanuel Goldstein. Our media propagate obvious lies such as: “Diversity is our strength,” but they at least avoid flagrant self-contradictions (some kinds of diversity may indeed be a source of strength, although certainly not the radical ethnic diversity that our media promote). Refugees do not flee our societies, but rather risk their lives trying to get into them. We are not taught to hate, but to tolerate. Sex is not generally discouraged, even among the young. With our multi-channel televisions and the internet we are free to see, hear, read, and discuss almost anything, if not everywhere. Freedom reigns. Yet to some that freedom seems, if not illusory, useless. It is useless because people’s thoughts and actions are monitored and controlled not by anything outside themselves but by their own warped consciences, consciences deliberately warped by our mainstream media, consciences closely resembling Bardèche’s “universal conscience.”

Orwell’s and Bardèche’s books have had quite different careers in the Occident. Orwell’s, although formerly banned in the Soviet Union, has been widely read and praised; Bardèche’s is still banned in France and is generally unknown elsewhere. 1984 has served to warn us against the dangers of Communism, and for that deserves acclaim. But one cannot help but wonder if its general acclaim today is not also an index to its irrelevance. We have escaped the dreadful future envisioned by Orwell in 1984. We have not escaped the dreadful future envisioned by Bardèche in 1948.

Bardèche says that his “only ambition, in writing this book, was to be able to read it again without shame in fifteen years.” My ambition, in translating it, was much more grandiose: I hope to hear it read some day without shame on TV by a politician. Bardèche wrote this book for the sake of the German “reprobates,” whom “the radios of all the people of the world, and the presses of all the people of the world, and millions of voices from all the horizons of the world” characterize as “monsters.” I have translated it also for the sake of “reprobates,” those nationalists throughout the Occident whom all our radios and presses and millions of voices likewise characterize as little better than “monsters.”
