as someone who watched someone close to them die of COPD i do not endorse the cigarette industry, and the fact that US military used to subsize smokes for overseas personnel (used to get mine for $2.10 a CARTON, while at sea) we all have the right and the freedom to make informed decisions. selling contraband cigs at below market? well the tax system is a travesty. to say the perp a Mr Garner, was guilty of nothing is not the case, that excessive force caused his death, more than likely. suppose the policeman handed the perp a citation? (i think they had busted him several times before) and yet excessive force was used. does anyone suppose the perp would have answered the cit? but finally i am not sure any of you would notice if the obama people didnt help push this onto the media networks to distract you from a whole lot of other things> still it rings of justice whatever that is.

Cigarettes are awlful, but they have nothing to do with this disregard for civil liberties...  What's next in NYC, submit to viloating the greater than 16 oz soda ban or die?

The ciggie tax violates the 8th amendment BEFORE people were punished by death for avoiding Bloombergs' stupid ciggie tax.

Next it's going to be sugar- thank God I don't live in NYC.

Do you know the Riddle of the Queens? I'll tell you. It is the least I can do. You can't put 8 queens on a chessboard. It is mathematically impossible. Every position on the board is covered by one or more of the queens.

The chessboard is an 8x8 matrix upon which 2x7 weights are seth. 6 positive, 6 negative, 1 neutral. Bernanke is a slimy thing. (i swear by all flowers) life is not an 8x8 matrix.

(and death i think is no parenthesis)

Matt Taibbi:

This policy of constantly badgering people for trifles generates bloodcurdling anger in "hot spot" neighborhoods with industrial efficiency. And then something like the Garner case happens and it all comes into relief. Six armed police officers tackling and killing a man for selling a 75-cent cigarette.

That was economic regulation turned lethal, a situation made all the more ridiculous by the fact that we no longer prosecute the countless serious economic crimes committed in this same city. A ferry ride away from Staten Island, on Wall Street, the pure unmolested freedom to fleece whoever you want is considered the sacred birthright of every rake with a briefcase.

If Lloyd Blankfein or Jamie Dimon had come up with the concept of selling loosies, they'd go to their graves defending it as free economic expression that "creates liquidity" and should never be regulated.

Taking it one step further, if Eric Garner had been selling naked credit default swaps instead of cigarettes – if in other words he'd set up a bookmaking operation in which passersby could bet on whether people made their home mortgage payments or companies paid off their bonds – the police by virtue of a federal law called the Commodity Futures Modernization Act would have been barred from even approaching him.

There were more cops surrounding Eric Garner on a Staten Island street this past July 17th then there were surrounding all of AIG during the period when the company was making the toxic bets that nearly destroyed the world economy years ago. Back then AIG's regulator, the OTS, had just one insurance expert on staff, policing a company with over 180,000 employees.

To be honest, I decided to read a book and shut off from technology for a few days.  I am one those who still keep books around and I not talking J.K. Rowling or Stephanie Meyers here.  You know those people who actually make money writing crap.  So I picked the one book I had been avoiding for two decades yet somehow always kept in my collection.  I had a bright idea to major in English for a couple of years and this book made no sense to me when I was in college but I had a youthful premonition that one day I would read it again.

The book I chose to read was Faulkner's 'The Sound and the Fury".  The book with no chapters but rather time frames and narratives.  Getting through the first 75 pages is almost impossible.(Benjy's part)  She smelled like trees.

Well, if you battle your way through you can make it to the next part of the book where things are much more straightforward and when you can observe the writing of one that generation's best writing start kicking some ass.  There is not one mention of an Ipad in the book!  Or any Apps, or any NSA, or any cold wars or anything such as Iran-Contra or the 2000 elections, Wall Street crap but the issue of race is brought to light and not in a politically correct manner.  I see the book is downloadable to your computer or pad.  I would hazard that it has been downloaded three times or so by now.

I like Jon Stewart from time to time, but not that often, simply because he is a cheap laugh who likes to make Hollowwood movies in his spare time it would appear.  I realized I could understand Benjy's babbling easier then I can understand all of todays and most of yesterdays politicians.  We don't smell like trees anymore.

Books are getting harder and harder to find.  Oh sure you can order them from Amazon but who knows what editing has been done to the latest editions.  Pretty soon they will have Keynes and Mises and saying they agreed.  You need to look for the old ones.  The ones people are throwing away.  Lots of times those are free.

Well, I see the cops have someone pulled over on the street outside my place.  I will have to observe how this goes.  Peace.

Edit:  Looked like someone got a traffic ticket for who knows what.  I bet the cops didn't know that they were being recorded though by the eye on the third floor overlooking the entire scene.

We all know waterboarding is State policy (at the Federal Level.) To which I say here "this aint shit folks.". Remote controlled chokings is not some game.  And the fact that we all know this is an instrument in " the power pack" says to me folks aren't dropping out of the system but are genuinely fearful of it.

And yes, it kills.  And no...I ain't chalking cholk holds.  "These chickens are coming home to roost indeed.

The world is now seeing what true honor and courage is...not in defying authority but in refusing to submit to its sadisitic application.

The records that the media must have on all the true extra judicial killings simply defies belief to me.

DisabledVet:  Words can slay just our rifles can.  Give me a phone and a keyboard and I can create more issues for them then you might imagine.  I have questions to ask and I have been asking them.  It's almost a game in way and I get answers.  Most of the answers are bullshit anyway so I go on and on with those in power.

I am simply a concerned citizen and I have questions.  Sometimes they get pissed off at you for questioning them, I.E I called the state and asked about my property taxes regarding the land that is underneath my lake.  I get taxed on that land but I can not use it.  About 80 phones calls later I finally talked to the guy who I needed to talk to and I asked him if my water on my property was mine.  He said that the state owns waters even though I own the lakebed and pay taxes on it.  I brought up that, if in fact, you are saying that you own the water on my property, then should you not you owe me instead me owing you?  Then that guy turned hostile because he knew he was caught in a conundrum.

Well it is too bad that I disrupted the state guy's masturbation session.

Another thing I did was to call the assessor.  You know that asshole that determines your property market value?  Well I pestered that asshole forever because the tax statment was saying that I was rich or something.  Oh yeah, right.  No way man.  I got that lazy fucker to finally drop the "assessed value" to what it hypothetically should be, but it took two years to do so.

You can win but you have to be an asshole and I am.  I threatened to sue the state for overtaxation in a class action lawsuit,  I consulted with several attorneys who said I do have a case.  They did not want to touch it though.  They did not want to fight the state.  What the fuck is the point of being an attorney then?

So there you go.  I am working on what I need to do.

The trouble is 1) they recruit guys with personality disorders (losers) and 2) they train them in 'no hesitation' violent response. They need to hesitate. if this trend continues killer cops will find themselves without the suport of their unions, DA's, judges. When the public perception changes, and it is changing now, juries and taxpayers will not back them up. They will not get that 20 year pension....

This heinous and unwarranted act of violence by the police against Mr. Garner will not stop but instead continue in America, again and again and again. It will not abate by any measure until the people take up the cause to ensure their personal safety by enacting sudden and fatal retribution against these intolerable acts prosecuted and sanctioned by the egregious abuse of State authority.

If these police crimes against the citizenry do not cease then cops will one day be found dead in their vehicles, in the streets, in their homes or wherever they may travel. People will be pushed into doing this because psychologically they will have reached a tipping point where trepidation is no longer a check on rational behavior. They will set these cops up by calling 911 and ambush them. They will track their movements, waiting for the opportune time and commit an act of vigilante justice. No cop will be safe, good or bad until they come to the realization they are the hunted, they are the target. They will feel the transference of  fear from the people to themselves and they will be the ones who will clamor for the end of violence.

William,

I did a little research on your question about what the DD on one of the cops t-shirts might stand for ( Instead of just cracking DD jokes as I did earlier).  Apparently the form used by the NYPD for their police arrest reports is called a DD-5. Perhaps DD is short for that?

I don't have a problem with body art, but when I see those triad/yakuza style tattoos on someone who says he is law enforcement, alarm bells go off. No way someone who wears those does not know out here in Asia they are strictly for gangstas. And what do all those Asians in NYC think when they see that: low class criminal type. Am I saying everyone with those kinds of tattoos are criminals and gangsters. No, but I think you know what I am saying. Those guys projected the kind of swinging dick vibe that lead to Eric Garner's demise.
