"Careening Toward A New & Different Kind Of Civil War"

Tyler Durden's picture

Submitted by James H Kunstler via Kunstler.com,

The Beauty Shop had barely stopped smoldering in Ferguson, Missouri, when the Eric Garner grand jury decision came down on Staten Island — no probable cause to indict one particular cop for something — manslaughter? — in his choke-hold take-down of the 300-pound cigarette-seller. For my money, they should have indicted the whole gang of cops who were there that day, including the black female NYPD sergeant on the scene ostensibly “supervising” the action, at least for something like negligent homicide, since the infamous video shows them acting cruelly, stupidly, and indifferently as the poor guy just lay dying on the sidewalk.

Worse, the decision only muddied the public’s view of several events in recent years involving black people, police, and standards of behavior so that now a general opinion prevails that all black people are always treated badly for no reason. That was the same week, by the way, that a white Bosnian immigrant named Zemir Begic was bludgeoned to death by three black teenagers wielding hammers who were out beating on stopped cars on a St Louis street — a crime that was barely covered in the news media, and went unprotested outside the immigrant neighborhood where it occurred. It’s hard to blame the public for being confused about what may or may not be happening across the nation, but history will surely judge this as a tragic time for America.

If we can’t or won’t unpack the separate issues in these matters, the country is going to get into a lot more trouble. One issue is whether police forces in the USA are becoming goon squads. The decision by the federal government to offload tactical military equipment, including armored war wagons, on police departments far and wide was disgracefully stupid since it only gives the impression, when hauled out, that the police are at war with the citizenry. There ought to be public discussion of just flat-out taking all that stuff away from them.

Non-black America is constantly being importuned to “talk honestly” about race and then punished when they actually do. I’ll venture here to summarize what I think has actually happened, and I’m sure a lot of people won’t like it, including plenty of white people. I take a historical view. It is at least an interesting coincidence that the climax of the civil rights campaign produced a black separatist movement that has endured for half a century. It emerged at exactly the moment that the two signal civil rights acts passed congress in 1964-65 (the public accommodations act and the voting rights act).

I think the reason for the sudden rise of black separatism was anxiety among black Americans about the prospect of being formally invited to participate in what was then American common culture. By the late 1960s even colleges were chartering new, separate student unions (at the demand of black students). The sad irony of this has been lost to history. But in effect, by that time a large segment of the black population had opted out either actively or mentally from trying to join the then-dominant culture. The gulf between the two cultures has only grown wider since then, egged on by a foolish white-sponsored “diversity” campaign which had imposed the ridiculous idea that a common culture in one nation is unnecessary.

The result is a permanently oppositional black culture with an elaborate ideology of endless grievance and a guilt-tripped white political culture held hostage by it and pandering endlessly to it — and sandwiched in between those two dispositions is a whole lot of really bad behavior. The least you can say about the four incidents involving Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown, Eric Garner, and Tamir Rice is that they involved some degree of ambiguity about what was actually going on, and in probably all those cases, at least, death was not caused by sheer malice. The same is not true about the case of Zemir Begic, or of the many people victimized during last year’s “knockout” game fad, or indeed the astounding number of people being gunned down regularly on the streets of Chicago.

I don’t think we’re capable of making these distinctions anymore, and surely not of doing anything constructive about them. Instead, we just appear to be careening toward a new and different kind of civil war.

Thank you for pointing this out. I feel like the black situation is a lot like the gay situation. It's not enough to be tolerant of it you must embrace it. I was born in Atlanta in 1953 and have lived here all my life. Yes my parents taught me to not have anything to do with black people but after many years one becomes aware that these stereotypes you've been taught are not necessarily true. For my money if you're doing something against the law you're going to suffer the consequences whether you're black or white. Case in point, my son in law was recently pulled over by an Atlanta police officer. Because he was in the wrong area of town she immediately assumed he was doing something wrong. Turns out he was just taking a shortcut and stopped at a convenience store for a six pack. She went ballistic on him and the only way he escaped was that she received another more serious call. Profiling knows no boundaries.

This is NOT going to help those black/white relations in Chicago any time soon.

As a parade of Chicago Police Department vehicles trailed a “Black Lives Matter” protestSaturday on the West Side, one of the unmarked cars appeared to be blasting the song “Sweet Home Alabama.”

When you look around the nation and see the leftists encouraging every group to establish their own 'culture', no matter how crazy it is, it is no wonder that we are a divided country. America use to be the 'melting pot' of the world, we were all Americans first, now we are easy pickings for the 'divide and conquer' communist crowd.

my experience as a not quite white person in the usa was spent mostly in the south. black people certainly have their own community issues but the dumbest people, by far, are white people when it comes to race issues. like greenspan sincerely could not understand why the banks would act so irrationally by purposely destroying the system that makes them money, i cannot understand why racism is a good reason to leave billions of dollars on the table from consumers to investors.

what does any self respecting person do when they are locked out of a system they pay their dues to be a memeber of? you fight. you fight either passive aggressively or with violence.  that is what they have done.

go south and hang around awhile. segregation never ended. it was always about economic segregation. they did not/do not want black people(or any other minority) to attain any measurable influence in the usa.

i am a not quite white person with a bunch of letters after my name. when i moved south as one of three asians below the mason dixon line i couldn't find a job worthy of my education. when i did i was barraged with all sorts of ignorance and envy(white people do not like gooks who are a lot smarter than they are). i dropped out. life is too short to deal with assholes for a living. fortunately for me my brains have earned me enough money to hire a gaggle of white slaves(and a few black ones) who have made money for me. yes, i am what they were and have no reason to change because the system has not changed. so if you see some gook treating white people badly then it may be me....or one of my gook friends.

my experience was the early 70s. different time but it warned me about the real sentiment of people who were outwardly nice to me.

it has changed a bit now. more dumbass americans know where asia is now. my kids have never had any issues.

the asian stereotype is different than the rest of the underclass. ours is more positive than negative. that makes a big difference but there has never been an organized protest or victim identity. most of my friends now laugh at those times because, by and large, the east asian community(and probably the south asian pacific communities, too) makes white people look like barbarians when social and economic stats are parsed.

I've African American fatigue. Placing the focus of police brutality on a single race distracts from the core issue. Your race, gender and age are of no consequence. All are eligible to be  beaten or shot to death with little to no consequence to police thanks to a corrupted judicial system which recoils in terror at the thought of municipalities being liable to monetary payouts. This only encourages further bad behavior by police agencies.

If you're looking for a villain in this, look no further than your local county or city governance.

No. The 'american' middle is the one class sitting on the others.

As a matter of facts, as the 'american' middle class shrinks, it means more rich people and more poor people.

In other words, the 'american' middle class is the limiting factors to the growth of the other two classes.

The 'american' middle class growth is limited by the availabity of resources in this global world.

The world is being overpopulated with the 'american' middle class.

The reality is that the civil war never really ended. Slavery was used as an excuse to start a war, that would kill and injure almost a million Americans, purely for the benefit of the Northern rich interests. It was clear by the mid 1800's, with the advent of industrial modernization, that slavery was an unprofitable enterprise for slave owners. Left to its own devices, slavery would have died out on its own, has it did in Brazil, for instance, several years later. Starting a war in the name of freeing the slaves, causing the deaths of 100's of thousands, mostly young people, created a resentment toward blacks, especially in the South, that exists to this day.

If you mean the war between Union and Confederacy, 1861 to 1865, it had nothing to do with slavery. The Confederate states seceded for reasons of their own and formed a new country. This new country attacked Fort Sumter for no good reason, even though the commander of the garrison offered to surrender. The war started when the Confederacy fired the first gun.

The slave issue did not come up for another 2 or 3 years. The Union reluctantly offered to free the slaves in captured territory in hopes of weakening the Confederacy.

Read a fucking book. Lincoln demanded Ft Sumter be continued to be supplied as a deliberate taunt to the CSA. Jefferson Davis sent an envoy to Washington to negotiate the sale of Federal property in the southern states. Lincoln refused to meet with them. Ft Sumter, by Lincoln's actions, became occupied by the military of a foriegn country. The south had every right to fire upon it.

The south was paying the bulk of federal taxes and recieving only a small share of federal spending.

The civil war had a lot to do with slavery. Not in the way 'americans' would like it though to make it cosy for their propaganda to thrive.

'Americans' enjoy picturing themselves as people for freedom.

And in a war involving slavery, the two warring factions had the two positions:

-the north supported a status quo in slavery
-the south wanted to extend the slavery institution, including to turn the slave ownership in an 'american' natural right

That is what 'americans' prefer to sink into propaganda.

Three positions towards slavery: for, against, or indifferent. Being for freedom forces one position. And 'americans', while depicting themselves as people for freedom, managed to occupy the two others.

Nice deeds.

Strange that Kunstler uses the term "Non-black" America, instead of White America. I still see Asians and Hispanics getting a pass on talking honestly about race. It's only Whites that have to fear reprisals if they speak honestly about race, like pointing out the fact that the Black underclass is by far the most violent group in America.

God forbid if you should say that during a College or Corporate Human Resource sponsored "Diversity sensitivity training session"!

The media race baiting just makes me think that the civil unrest that is inevitably coming is probably going to happen sooner rather than later.

The lack of education in the black community makes it easy to stir them up and the militarized mostly white police force which can murder people with impunity is a perfect way to do it. Their mass ignorance and distrust of white people also makes it impossible to deal with them. It would be nice if there were some black leaders that werent part of the problem.

Government murders black people, black people burn things, white people get scared, demand more police and military, government murders more people... rince wash repeat...

That guy was arrested/murdered because he would not obey, not because he was black or broke the law. Why the police even have this power at all should be the real discussion.

That is an interesting vision, still 'american'

In an 'american' society, the government exists to serve the 'american' middle class.

Indeed, in an 'american' society, all those types of population like negroes exist to ensure the cohesiveness of the 'american' middle class.

The 'american' negroes might or might not be educated, they know the state of things.

As a result, the 'american' middle class always seek greater protection from the State.

The cycle is the following:
-the 'american' middle class builds their welfare in a certain way, that calls for certain consequences.
-in order to get protected from these consequences, the 'american' middle class fund the State through taxation
-The State operates to protect the 'american' middle class.
-the more the 'american' middle class squeezes, the more it calls for consequences.
-the more there are consequences, the more the 'american' middle class strengthens the State to get protection.

etc

That is the loop.

In an 'american' society, the government exists to do the will of the 'american' middle class.

Yes, the "why now" question should be asked by any thinking person.

The optics of the current media inundation of brutalized blacks are all skewed.

Before emotion takes away all pretence of rationality, ask who gains by causeing, then manipulating anger?

"Resentment turns to anger, anger turns to hate, travel to far down that path and the way is lost"

It is clear.

One guy (who happened to be a negro) went to sell cigs on the streets.

'American' middle classers exposed him as he wasnt paying taxes.

The servants to the 'american' middle class were called on the scene (servants incidentally paid by the 'american' middle class through taxes)
The case was dealt swiftly.

A grand jury settled that nothing went wrong since the police officers worked to protect the interests of their master, the 'american' middle class.

It was reported on this site, years ago, that the way the 'american' middle class fares, usually calls for more protection from the State.

That is one of the main reason the 'american' middle class spend so much resources on their State: it is the State's work to protect the 'american' middle class from facing certain consequences of their faring ways.

Ultimately this is not a black and white thing, it is a Liberty and treason thing.

An American, not US subject.

They have their lists and spying, and so should the people.

The American people should be compiling a list, call it the Crimes Against the American People List (CAAPL)

A list of known pol, crat, functionaries (funcs) and bankster criminals in their sphere of influence. Oath violating and treasonous gun and badge thugs, corrupt pols and crats, thieving banksters, etc. should be placed on it. Their names, crimes, and positions should be, at a minimum, kept for future reference for accountability, trial and punishment..?

When the DC US finally collapses, these lists can then be used to root out the known criminals that will think that they can hide among their victims--no "Truth and Reconciliation," no quarter, only "Trial and Retribution."

The War of Northern Aggression was caused by a series of abuses of Southern Rich People (SRP) by Northern Rich People (NRP). The northern industrialists and bankers bought more politicians due to their savvy sophistication + connections + having the gold to pay for it all.

A railroad attorney named Lincoln was the NRP's boy.

With trade constraints, unfair tariffs, naval blockades and other offenses their businesses soured to the point the SRP tried to invoke their freedom to leave the political bailiwick of the NRP and organize a better one of their own. They had joined the Union voluntarily, and thought they could break the ties at will.

The rest is history.  Slavery was used later to justify the whole war.

Another 'american' article. 'American' nature is eternal.

So the article is supposed to be about confusion.

And the article confuses acts by servants of the public order, with all it means in an 'american' society, with personal acts.

Once again, everything is good to try and protect the 'american' middle class.

The issue of the so called militarization of the police forces is one for the decaying part of the 'american' middle class: they lulled themselves into thinking that they could keep a balance in weaponry with their state sponsored police forces.

Other than that, the fantasy that 'america' has been selling out was that they changed, that they had a past and that their present is now different.

'America' has always been a police state. One hallmark of a police state is the difficulty or absence of prosecution of the police forces. Looking at the US history, it is easy to check that police officers prosecuted for murders are a rarity.

'American' middle class societies usually come with a police state.

It is once again another iteration of the fabled past: it is only now that the police forces are turning into goon squads.

The reality is that the police in the US have always been pushing on negroes and others and that, despite a tremendous amount of resources consumed to comfort the 'american' middle class into thinking it has changed, it has not changed.

The 'american' nature is eternal, and racism is an integral part of 'americanism'.

'Americanism' can not exist without racism.

The last point is that this type of events were predicted on this site, infering from 'americanism'.

ZH unfortunately is also  full of police agents/white supremacists, basically the same thing.  Seems to me that "da negro" is way out ahead of the rest of murika in being hip to "criminiality is the way to go".  They just pattern the Wall streeet bankster criminals and the cops of all stripes who protect them, and who get off scot-free.  Occupy showed that you are a chump to "protest peacefully".  That's just to set you up for the inevitable "police riot' as violence will be forced upon you.  You will not be permetted "peaceful assemly" that lasts for more than a weekend afternoon.  The role of white supremacists meanwhile is to act as police agents to determine which "criminals" will or will not be punished.  You think you are "standing up for the White race", but you're just a fool working for the criminal oligarch parasites running and ruining this country.

Maidan - a "violent" Occupy - is clearly the model to implement.

No.

Peaceful protest is the way to go.  But it must be peaceful protest with the teeth in full view.

Put 10,000 NRA members, heavily armed in a peaceful protest in DC and you will get a whole new appreciation of how effective peaceful protest can be.

The Asshats, and indeed all asshats everywhere as De La Boettie correctly surmised, rule by means of the ILLUSION of power.

A peaceful, but armed, protest carries the risk that things will become unexpectedly violent.  Of course, so does a peaceful unarmed protest.  The difference with the unarmed protest is that there is a guaranteed winner at hand - and it is not the protester.

Velvet glove, iron fist.  Anyone think that chokehold murderer cop would have escalated to violence so quickly knowing there were 6 dudes with firearms backing up the victim?

Great lengths are being taken to remake South Africa in the US.

There too was a former colony that had become measurably more successful than the former Colonial Power that spawned it, much to the chagrin of the European Aristocracy because it threatened their raison d'etre.

Complicating the transformation is the fact that where SA was 30% European Descent and 70% Black, the US is something like 70% White, 20% other, and 13% Black.   Hence, all the gyrations to create a new violent 'native' population to wipe out the white natives.

What these asshats fail to reason is that a others' loss is not their gain, and that a loss to humanity is still a loss, whether it makes them appear more successful by way of comparison or not.

Given its current racial makeup and existing trends (e.g. immmigration and amnesties) USA looks much more likley to end up as Brazil or Mexico rather than South Africa.

very simple, it's the 50th anniversary of the civil-rights act, and the people who made their 1%er. careers out it are making sure their 1%er. careers continue.

a furious lbj, after him, and the majority of the southern democrats were forced into to voting for some kind of civil-rights legislation, stated, ( i'll give these n-----'s just enough money that it won't make a difference, and they'll be voting democrat for the next 200 yrs.).

his truthful words turned into the democrats campaign, and agenda ever since.

a pure stroke of (evil,un-american), genius, give democrat voters entitlements, and make non-democrat voters pay the majority of the expense,(tax-dollars).

same was done in all public-sector unions, sure they'll vote for, and donate to the politicians that promises them raises, and better benefits, (it's for the children, more fireman, and policeman to make your city safe, more dhs workers to protect america from terrorism), so all tax-payers pay for the democrat parties campaign, and agenda.

remember tax-payers pay for riot damages, while democrats campaign on them, now tax-payers have sharpton on retainer, and holder as referee, racial striffs will continue, there's way to much money, and power to be gained in it proceeding.

Entitlements pre-date LBJ as the Democrat's preferred lever of power.

And their use of that lever is straight out of the Communist Manifesto...

"From the moment when labour can no longer be converted into capital, money, or rent, into a social power capable of being monopolised, i.e., from the moment when individual property can no longer be transformed into bourgeois property, into capital, from that moment, you say, individuality vanishes.

You must, therefore, confess that by “individual” you mean no other person than the bourgeois, than the middle-class owner of property. This person must, indeed, be swept out of the way, and made impossible. "

Marx's error was in the assertion that working class could not be middle class because, he thought, the costs of subsistence defined the average wage rather than simple supply and demand.

History proved him wrong.

His modern followers didn't get the memo, won't get the memo, and are determined to have their proletarian human cattle stampede them to absolute power at all costs.

Better had man never emerged from his caves.

COPS vs. BLACKS: sounds great to me! I'll just stay here on fenced acreage, wait for 50% of them to die or quit, and then lock-and-load for Round 2.....when they're starving and jumping my fence to steal food. I'm an equal-opportunity defender.

Here is a take on the upcoming European Civil War of 2017 based on bad financial leadership and mass migration.  It starts with an ISIS style outbreak of violence in FRance and spreaks to UK etc. It is a sort of Turner Diaries for Europe.    https://eurocivilwar2017.wordpress.com/

This just in -- now the Israelis will be demanding the right to return to Kazaria.

Kunstler has been denying his Kazarian roots. I wonder what his story will be when Netandyoohoo finally admits it.
