Los Angeles Apartments Are On Fire... Literally

Tyler Durden's picture

A massive downtown Los Angeles fire - engulfing numerous apartment buildings - has blocked the northbound 101 Freeway and looks set to make the usual disastrous traffic in LA even more unbearable today. As The LA Times reports, more than 250 firefighters battled the blaze at an apartment tower under construction in the 900 block of Fremont Avenue. The images are simply stunning...

Luve Feed (via NBC):

Incredible...

As Reuters reports,

Two freeways were closed as firefighters battled a large blaze in downtown Los Angeles early Monday, the Los Angeles Fire Department said.

"It's a large building, about a block long. The whole building is a total loss. The fire did spread into two neighboring buildings," said David Ortiz, a spokesman for the fire department. "The fire was going across the freeway."

Ortiz said there were no reports of injuries or fatalities in the fire, which consumed an apartment building that was still under construction.

He said more than 250 firefighters fought the fire, which was reported after 1:20 a.m. PST, and which was under control by 4:30 a.m. PST.

The fire was under control but not extinguished, and freeways would be opened soon, Ortiz said.

The fire spread to two neighboring buildings, including an office building on North Figueroa Street, where several stories were damaged by fire and water.

Stunning images...

Perhaps - like Blackstone believes - the apartment market is really going up in smoke... and a fire-sale was the best option

Looks like another one of those mostly or "all wood" buildings that have been popular since the up turn in the rental market.  Cheap to build now that the housing codes have been gutted...

Los Angles is burning: Bad Religion: enjoy! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BxoD9zWY9Rg

"Los Angeles Is Burning"

Somewhere high in the desert near a curtain of a blue
St. Anne's skirts are billowing
But down here in the city of the lime lights
The fans of santa ana are withering
And you can’t deny that living is easy
If you never look behind the scenery
It's showtime for dry climes
And bedlam is dreaming of rain

When the hills of los angeles are burning
Palm trees are candles in the murder wind
So many lives are on the breeze
Even the stars are ill at ease
And los angeles is burning

This is not a test
Of the emergency broadcast system
Where malibu fires and radio towers
Conspire to dance again
And I cannot believe the media Mecca
They're only trying to peddle reality,
Catch it on prime time, story at nine
The whole world is going insane

When the hills of los angeles are burning
Palm trees are candles in the murder wind
So many lives are on the breeze
Even the stars are ill at ease
And los angeles is burning

A placard reads
"the end of days"
Jacaranda boughs are bending in the haze

More a question than a curse
How could hell be any worse?

The flames are stunning
The cameras running
So take warning

I know the developer. GH Palmer who happens to be jewish. 526 units were torched most likely by an arsonist. Building is directly across the street from fire station who didn't respond until building was fully engulfed. Still, they would not have had any problem renting those units out. My guess is at the end of the day, there will not be enough insurance to replace what was lost. Usually an errors and omissions glitch which will lead to lawsuits for years to come

I'll betcha the buildings do not collapse at free fall speed in on their own footprint.

... not unless Silverstein is in the area calling for them to "pull it".

No builiding has ever collapsed at free fall speed into its own footprint, including ones that have been wired with miles of detcord and demolished with explosives, including WTC 127 which collapsed due to massive structural failures and all did not collapse at free fall speeds.

You need to take a 5th Grade science class and learn what the difference between free fall time and free fall +10% means to the physics of the situation.

But since you posted that, you are a Truther, and you probably have no STEM education at all. I suspect you cannot perform simple Maths without a calculator.

it is NOT the fuel, you mighty collection of DOLTS.

it was the planes cutting through the central structural core of the building.

equivalent to having 4 inches of your shin bones removed and expecting you to stay standing.  There wasn't enough core left to HOLD the floors above the impact point.

read about the construction of the towers.  I know it will involve words and stuff, something that continues to confuse a great many ZH'ers.

I have, the core was 42 4' concrete encased steel I beams.

Some beams were over 1200 degrees over a week later.

So you beleive that both towers (ignore building 7) fell in their own footprint, with the concrete turning to dust?

That is the best you can do? I use Maths because I am educated and international.

There are no precision demolitons explosions - all of the proof you guys provide I listened to and watched. I am open minded, but you guys are all wrong.

You cannot perceive reallity correctly, and there is nothing more to be said. You hear one transformer blowing up and to you it sounds like a controlled demo. I have witnessed controlled demos in person, sounds nothing like it. You cannot discern one thing from another.

You know how much stored PE was in the 1&2?

About 500 tonnes of TNT worth.

More than enough to destroy WTC7.

Does not include fire, KE impact from two jets flying at 800kph, and so on.

You guys, all of you, either don't mention or are too ignorant to understand that the construction methods of WTC were unique and made the building susceptible to what happened. Open flooring, no support pillars, sprung between and inner and outer tube with gypsum, not sheet rock or concrete, as the walls of the stairwells. Weaken one clip, one floor lowers on to the next, and the building no longer is stable and collapses.

You also don't understand that metal does not have to melt to deform and lose tensile and compressive strength.

You are too stupid to understand that you are stupid. Thus conversation with you is futile. Later.

It's when you cannot make the argument yourself because you are not smart enough, so you invoke an Authority on a subject.

""Truthers'" don't realise that they are using Newspeak on themselves. They, and you, are as far from the Truth as possible.

You lack basic maths knowledge - I have posted to guys like you hundreds of times the basic calculations for the amount of energy in the WTC127, and how much needed to take down 7 - the simple fact is that you are stupid, and you don't realise that you are stupid.

This is Dunning-Kruger effect.

You cannot understand when your thesis has been proven wrong.

I have given up on you guys, you are too dumb to cogitate that you are dumb.

Do you propose the night watch person watch video display of a camera on the roof rotating in circles around the fire house?  Maybe a "fire sniffing" device next to the camera?  Or should they just walk or drive through their first response area looking for fire 24/7?

Suppose above is the case.  In an area with such high population density, even at 01:00 hours, exactly what makes you suspect a passerby would not call it in prior to the FD noticing an incident?

ZH members are generally against more govt expense and bureaucracy.  Do you think more thorough fire detection is free?

Are readers surprised that mathematical chance of fire occuring across the street from a FH is just as high as any location?  Fires do occur in fire houses, BTW.

You apparently confuse a residential living room with the control room or "main floor" of the fire "house" in a densely populated area of the second or third most dense city in the USA.  "Windows" to view the outside world are virtually non-existent in such structures.  I am highly familiar with such structures.

The term "house" used in "firehouse" is a hand down from the horse drawn buggy days when firemen lived 24/7 in huge buildings (in larger cities of the era).  The fire house was permanent home.  This is of course the pre-union era, when only the lowest class immigrants cared for such hard labor, new arriving Italians and Irish.

There was a poster of a stereotypical aunt-jemima black woman yelling at her black bare foot child running out the door.  The caption read, "Johnny put on you shoes, or they'll think you's Irish!"

One economist once said : to get the economy going we must "build and destroy" fast; like digging pot holes and repairing them all the time.

It comes from an old legend of the Odyssey: Penelope kept her suitors on tenterhooks by undoing at night the tapestry she wove during the day; all the time her husband was away living his adventures.

Its in a way the tapestry of economic life.

Maybe Penelope today lives in LA !

Anyway, I'm sure that Hollywood will make a version of Towering Inferno II with Schwarzi and Stallone.

PS : It could be O Selznick's ghost doing a remake of Atlanta burning in "Gone with the wind".

It might pay to start prosecuting cops afterall.  Of course we all know how stubborn the idiots in charge of the US are.  They'll outlaw portable gas cans and lighters first.

Geez!

If someone would have shown me those distant pics of the city, and I didn't know any better, I would have thought a Tactical Nuke went off. That's one HUGE fire and smoke cloud!

Anyone know where Vinny "the Torch" was this morning?

An American, not US subject.

Seems strange....a fire of THAT magnitude and the steel structure appears to be still together.

Consistent with the entire history of steel structured buildings...only 3 have collapsed due to fire....all on the same day...

Turn those cameras back on!  There's bound to be at least one "unstable" 47 story building within a few blocks radius...

There used to be a saying in insurance companies that when a property was an investment problem, sometimes Jewish lightning would strike and burn it up. Then insurance companies would be stuck with the payout. I thought the fire sprinkler systems would be active before the building would be finished.

This is VERY CLOSE to the CITY HALL of LOS ANGELES...

Once can see the Real Estate Machinations - perhaps for a new Luxury Condo, or a Green Office Building?

Could it be related to Tomorrow's Special Elections to cover "State Senate District 35", which Overlaps MAXINE WATERS' Turf,  to cover Roderick Wright's Resignation?

52% Latino - I guess there will be more Latinos representing the Legislature from this region.  Ms. Maxine Waters' time is running out.  Mebbe a Hispanic Democrat/Independent will run for Congress next time around.
