The 'Thin Blue Line' Serves No Purpose

Tyler Durden's picture

Submitted by Brandon Smith via Alt-Market blog,

Like many people, I grew up watching numerous television shows and mainstream movies depicting a world in which the common police officer stood as a sentinel of civilized society against a seething underbelly of violence and chaos just beneath the surface of the world around us. Through public schooling, we were indoctrinated to fear the drug culture as a breeding ground of gangland destruction and to worship law enforcement officials as the only barrier between us and a cocaine-frosted wasteland. We were led to believe that every day police were holding back a tide of crime and terrorism. The so-called “thin blue line” was an indispensable part of a safe and prosperous nation.

To criticize or present opposition to the institution of state and federally funded law enforcement is often considered tantamount to treason – or, at the very least, it is considered unpatriotic. After all, we have all been told every moment of our lives that a world without police would immediately turn into a frothing, frenzied orgy of mass insanity and that average human beings cannot be trusted to take responsibility for the day-to-day security of their neighborhoods and towns. Official doctrine today demands a designated warrior class, separate from the rest of us, to handle the protection and care of weakling citizens.

Now, it is important to note that there are in fact many good people working in the field of law enforcement. This is not under debate and not relevant to the point I am about to make. The problem is not necessarily with all the individuals who make up law enforcement; the problem is with the existence and mandate of the institution itself. I personally do not “hate” cops per se (though some of them deserve to be hated). But I do hate corrupt government structures, and law enforcement has become the grasping arm of the elitist machine.

The downfall of any policing system arises when individuals are separated from the responsibility for their own security and society is delegated into classes of protectors, or sheepdogs, and sheep.  As I have outlined in many articles, government itself has become an entity foreign to the interests of the American people. Through the false left/right paradigm, elitists have taken away the ability of the public to participate in civic duties and to preserve our principles rather than sacrifice them in the name of the “greater good.” City and state police are not subject to the tides of political elections, even if elections actually mattered. They are part of an unaccountable bureaucratic monstrosity that shifts only according to the whims of the establishment.

The existence of a separate government-controlled warrior class has caused crisis and catastrophe all throughout human history. Invariably, this warrior class ends up exalting itself as superior to the functions and values of the citizenry, rather than maintaining a sense of duty to the citizenry. The claim that the average American is not capable of proper self-security or community security is perhaps the most successful lie of the past century. This is not to say that warriors do not exist. Some people develop the proper mindset, while others do not. However, becoming a warrior is a personal psychological and spiritual pursuit meant to overcome the detriments of fear and has nothing whatsoever to do with government recognition. The fact that many law enforcement officials often refer to non-LEOs as “civilians” is a rather laughable example of the delusions of the government-paid bureaucratic warrior class in action, fantasizing as if they have been deployed to Afghanistan while writing speeding tickets in suburbia.

In the early days of America, the common citizenry through the formation of the militia WAS the warrior class. Every last able-bodied person was a sentinel and defender of the peace. The sheriff, the only elected and constitutional form of law enforcement, often had a posse, which was, again, made up of regular citizens. There was no exalted Praetorian Guard — only friends, family and neighbors.  There was no need for a government dominated law enforcement structure back then, nor is there a need for one now.

The militia system was slowly eroded over decades and replaced with centralized law enforcement under the direct influence of the political elite. Currently, using the Department of Homeland Security and the integration of “fusion centers,” the police are now an army under direct federal control, equipped with military-grade technology through the 1033 program. When Barack Obama called for the creation of a “civilian national security force” just as powerful and well-funded as the military back in 2008, this is clearly what he was referring to. The results of police militarization are thoroughly negative.

In my recent article 'The Ferguson conundrum solved by community security,' I discussed the complete lack of LEO protection against looting and arson during the Ferguson, Missouri, riots, which led the Oath Keepers to provide security for innocent business owners, filling the void left behind. Law enforcement officials were apparently too busy harassing peaceful protesters and journalists to deal with the threat of a burning city, or too busy guarding government building and revealing where their true loyalties rest.  I have heard arguments that the Ferguson police were not to blame for the failure because they were under orders from their superiors and under pressure from the federal government.  While I would note that each individual officer has the right and the duty to refuse immoral orders, regardless of whether or not LEO's refused to protect businesses out of personal choice, or out of fear of losing their jobs, the fact remains that the public is often left to face criminality without the aid of police.  And, because this is an undeniable reality, the public must take back responsibility for its security.

Whether one believes that the shooting of Michael Brown was justified or not, the police response after the fact only reinforced public expectations of corruption. Ferguson is only one example in a multitude of police abuses, and these abuses are not relegated to any one ethnicity. Leftists are not wrong when they point out the dangerous evolution of law enforcement into a government goon squad (the liberty movement was warning the world about it long before the left ever figured out what was going on). But in their half-sighted examinations, they make the mistake of believing police abuse is purely race-related. In reality, police abuse is universal — from Tamir Rice, the black 12-year-old in Cleveland shot dead by police less than two seconds after their arrival for having a toy gun in his pants, to the murder of Kelly Thomas, a white homeless man shot with a stun gun in the face and beaten for 10 minutes straight in the street until dead by California police for the crime of “not sitting still as ordered.”

In nearly all of these cases of overt police force, even when video evidence clearly indicates wrongdoing, LEOs are acquitted by the system. The reason for this should be obvious: The establishment must keep the warrior class happy, content, and untouchable; otherwise, the they loses power. No corrupt system is going to punish its own unless utterly necessary to its survival, because if it did, it would then have to admit that it is not entirely trustworthy, causing the people to question whether its existence is more dangerous than the villains it is supposed to protect us from. Government generally only cares about perpetuating its own existence; it does not care about the safety of the populace.  In this way, police become a kind of Mafia or cult with their own set of rules outside of the purview of the rest of society and immune to any form of justice.

What is truly disturbing are the lengths to which some Americans (and other law enforcement) will go to rationalize any and all actions taken by police, even if they result in the death of an innocent. The Stockholm Syndrome certainly seems to be at work as portions of the public continue to worship LEOs as saviors who can do no wrong.  Mention the idea of getting rid of state police, and the LEO fan club cries out in terror like children separated from their parents at a crowded shopping mall.  In the end, though, all children must eventually grow up and start taking care of themselves.

At bottom, police are not protectors of the public good, not even in a technical or legal sense. Law enforcement organizations have even argued in the Supreme Court that their job is NOT to prevent crime but to enforce the law after the fact, and they have won using this assertion. That is to say, a police officer is NOT legally required to protect a person from harm, only to institute state policy once a crime is committed.

What government law enforcement is admitting to in its argument is that it does not provide security, which is what we in the liberty movement have known all along. The only service police provide is to clean up the mess left over when the carnage of a crime has subsided. If law enforcement has any purpose at all, it is to keep the public in check and in line - to promote the farce that without government protection, chaos will rule.

The communist Cheka, a security organization founded by Vladimir Lenin at the beginning of the Bolshevik takeover of Russia, was notorious for random arrests and killings of civilians in the name of peace and security. Many communist Russians, true believers in the Bolshevist cause, refused to accept that the Cheka were capable of criminal abuse. They assumed that those killed must have been enemies of the state, just as the government proclaimed. And when they themselves were arrested for no apparent reason, they wrote letters from the gulags to Stalin, naively believing that he would save them from what must have been a bureaucratic error.

In fact, the Cheka had been given orders directly from the state to fill a quota of arrests in order to justify the constant propaganda the state produced warning of agents of “capitalist evil” around every corner. The Cheka, the secret police, were given warrior-class status and free reign to assert their authority over anyone, at any time, for any reason. America is only a short step away from a similar nightmare, and many in our nation suffer from the same naive faith in statism as the Russians did years ago.

The only way to avoid such a horror is to remove state-sanctioned law enforcement from the picture entirely.  Is this "throwing the baby out with the bathwater"?  No.  Rather, it is saving the baby from a swirling virulent cesspool.

As we saw in grand scale in Ferguson, LEOs are essentially useless to the public. In response, members of the Ferguson community welcomed the Oath Keepers and their Community Preparedness Team strategy. In time, Oath Keepers CPT will train locals to provide their own protection without need for any outside aid. When locals provide their own security, when every citizen is a member of the warrior class, abuse is far less likely because the watchmen have no motivation to abuse themselves.

Arguments that this will lead to a culture of "warlords" invariably pop up when discussing the concept of community based security.  Of course, when every member of a community is trained to defend themselves, abusive warlord do not last long, but then again, neither do abusive governments, which I suppose is the true reason why decentralized community security is treated with such disdain.  This is yet another contrived attempt to insinuate that the American people cannot be trusted with their own defense, but the government can.  It is built around the illusion that state police are somehow "impartial observers" and actors.  This has simply never been so.  State controlled police have every motivation to protect state interests, and as long as they are given free license to do whatever they please without consequence, most of them will continue to do so.  Impartiality is non-existent in the world of law enforcement.

Police misconduct has a cumulative effect on a culture. We do not forget all of the oversteps of the past; we merely file them away until we finally reach a breaking point. It is important for LEOs to understand that while they may have a relative immunity to legal reparations, they are not immune to the rage of the populace and will likely find their fragile warrior personas rather inadequate when that day arrives. For the true constitutional police out there, it is time to take sides, either with good American people or with the corrupt establishment. It is impossible to serve both. The illusion of the “thin blue line” is quickly fading. The only question now is: What is going to replace it? The establishment would have you believe there are only two options: total chaos or martial law. But there has always been a third alternative they seek to suppress: the return of community defense, the resurgence of localized responsibility and the victory of personal liberty over false security.

I never call them. I would do just fine without their extraction tactics and harrassment, thank you very much.

This quote from the article " The establishment would have you believe there are only two options: total chaos or martial law."

Is Headbanger "the establishment" who says it'll either be him or chaos?

If so, I'll gladly take my chances against chaos.  When chaos kicks my front door in, I can shoot him. When the state cop  does it, I must submit or die in a withering hail of bullets -- by LAW.

I'll choose rightful liberty, Headbanger. And I don't need state thugs to help me attain it. In fact all they do is take it away at every opportunity.

So please don't project your fear of your neighbors and your lack of ability to defend  yourself on the rest of us.

Thanks.

Police enforce the will of the state. Their job is to take orders from our 'leaders' and use coercion to make us comply.  They DO NOT  have a specific duty to protect citizens.  Do you trust your politicians, aka Congress? If so, why do you trust the police?

That's my point headbanger, It damn sure could be. All it takes is ass-clowns, and 3-12 Lbs. of trigger pull. I seem to remember a 12 year old kid with a toy being killed by a cop.
I seem to remember a couple ladies that were delivering newspapers getting shot up in their truck by cops. (Cali, during a manhunt for a cop).
I do think I'll see the day that people no longer stand by and watch their neighbors get beat down, robbed, or killed by the thin blue line.

Look at the "Wild West" which wasn't actually so wild. People worked to together because it meant survival. The "wild types" died of starvation, disease or were out right killed, but that was by far the exception. No, to truly kill on a mass level it takes gov't employed thugs with arms as witnessed by every major socialist society in the modern era. They inevitably become genocidal.

WHY DO WE EVEN PAY THE COPS ?!?!? Their own stated mission is officer safety meaning that they stay out of the way during the crime, then come in, collect the evidence between bites on a Krispy Kreme, and take the victims to the morgue. The #1 killer of cops is car wrecks, and it's by a WIDE margin. Officer safety is at a record high. Look at the Ferguson videos. Those fat fucks sat their checking their pension plans while looters stole things in open view and set things ablaze in plain site. SO THEN WHY THE FUCK DO WE NEED THESE GOV'T THUGS ?!?!?!

Just wait until their pensions are vaporized.  And which cities in NJ were the ones that laid off something like 50% of their police forces because they wouldn't accept wage cuts?  Wasn't it Cambden and one other?  Just think about how bitter the cops that got laid off are.  I live in a state that relies on gas and oil taxes big time.  If oil prices stay low, the state's budget is going to get a big cut.  We'll see how many state troopers get the boot if this keeps up.

"Community defense" will work pretty well in most rural areas.  In fact, you can say that most small town sherrifs, especially the elected onese, are engaging in community defense. It's not going to work well in urban areas, especially urban African-American communities.  In those cases, the community doesn't like being victimized, but they also complain when too many criminals are locked up.  They want to have their cake and eat it too.

I am reading a great book right now...I would highly recommend it...It is called Arrest Proof Yourself...written by a cop that is pissed at the system.  I am 80 pages in and am just blown away.  He teaches you just how cops can fuck up your life in a matter of moments...and teaches you how to avoid disaster.  I have nothing to gain by sharing this with you and have no connection with this book.  But I will tell you this.  For $12 bucks...it is one hell of a lot of knowledge.

It's another book for clever idiots

Here's the best review of it from Amazon:

"I'd give this book zero stars, if that were possible.

As a criminal defense lawyer, I'm always looking out for books that are written to be easy to understand for non-lawyers. (As a blogging criminal defense lawyer, I do what I can to write on the topic myself.)

This book is not that. It's ignorant drivel. I know some criminal defense lawyers who even question if it was really written by a police officer, as it purports to be.

But seriously, mess yourself to avoid arrest? I don't think that's going to work. Some of the police cars these days actually have hard plastic back seats. They can disinfect and hose those if they need to do so. The end result of following this advice is that you're going to end up sitting in your messy pants for awhile, because they sure aren't going to let you wash them out while you're in holding, or booking.

This book is all about the opposite of what I think we need to do. This book is about demeaning yourself before law enforcement, when what you should be doing is making yourself aware of your rights and then (carefully) exercising them. When (not if, unfortunately) that fails, you should be filing a complaint against the officer, and under the right circumstances you should sue. That's the only way things are going to change. (Complaints, in particular, can help because even though the police force will find them "unfounded," they rack up. And criminal defense attorneys like myself can run motions that give us access to those, so eventually we're able to show that a particular cop is not to be trusted, which can result in less of his victims going to jail, or prison, and possibly result in his being reassigned or terminated.)

If you're looking for serious advice on how to "arrest-proof" yourself, this book is not the place to look."

@ Headbanger:

I read a copy of "Arrest Proof Yourself", and I disagree. The overall points I think Carson was making are that:

1. Police exist to do 2 things: Arrest people, and create revenue for the "just us" system.

2. The easiest way to avoid arrest, is to avoid drawing attention to yourself, by keeping your appearances and behaviors "distinctly middle class".

The part about soiling yourself is in there as a "last-ditch effort" to avoid arrest, not as the "first step you need to take, to avoid being arrested", so you're really taking it out of context.

He also points out a lot of the tactics that police use to 'shit-test' people, in order to get people to self-incriminate, which is crucial learning for anyone who was raised believing the TV version of what "justice" is all about.

I also don't think he was saying "you should grovel before police", as much as he was saying "you're not going to win any favors with the police, by acting like an asshole"

Obviously, as a criminal defense attorney, you understand these things, but keep in mind that not everyone is as smart as you are. Most of mainstream society seems to be pretty clueless when it comes to the legal system, or "clueless enough to get themselves into trouble".

As far as "knowing your rights"? Absolutely agree, but you of all people should know that one misstep, or one misspoken phrase, or ignorant mistake in a legal conversation (especially in court), can compound your problems, if you're in trouble with "the law".

Better off avoiding those situations entirely, imo.

Headbanger, is no defence attorney. But to be fair, he didn't claim to be. You just misunderstood his quoating of a reviewer of the book.

Headbanger is often insightfull and on the money regarding various topics. He does, however, have a certain misguided love of police mentality. He may be a cop, or not, but certainly aligns himself with their tactics.

I suggest "The Rape Of Justice" by Eustace Mullins.

It is important to realize that ALL attorneys are "officers of the court" and capable of throwing your case to gain more income on appeal, working with the prosecution and judge to convict you or just throwing the case. As officers of the court, their duty is to the court first and you second.

They're not quite as bad as policemen, but still another brick in the wall of tyranny.

Congress Passes Bill Which Grants “Unlimited Access to Communications of Every American”

by Paul Joseph Watson | December 11, 2014

http://www.infowars.com/congress-passes-bill-which-grants-unlimited-acce...

excerpt:

"According to Congressman Justin Amash, Congress just passed a bill which grants the government and law enforcement “unlimited access to the communications of every American”.

When the Michigan lawmaker discovered that the Intelligence Authorization Act for FY 2015 had been amended with a provision that authorizes “the acquisition, retention, and dissemination” of all communications data from U.S. citizens, he desperately attempted to organize a roll call vote on the bill.

However, the legislation was passed yesterday 325-100 via a voice vote, a green light for what Amash describes as “one of the most egregious sections of law I’ve encountered during my time as a representative”.

The bill allows the private communications of Americans to be scooped up without a court order and then transferred to law enforcement for criminal investigations.

The legislation effectively codifies and legalizes mass warrantless NSA surveillance on the American people, with barely a whimper of debate."

Nothing new.

They have been collecting communications since the 1950's.

The post office could read your letters without opening them.

The phone company could listen to your calls, or just listen in on anything near any phone, even if it was hung up or off the hook.

The only reason they make such announcements, is to see how quiet certain people get when they know that they have been observed.

It's still a free country, but nowadays they itemize everything.

And you want the American people to police themselves. We have moved way beyond that my friend. This will end in blood. And while revolution is in the mix... NSA listing here I come... I still maintain world war is next on the list.

In a perfect world.  Listen to what just happened to me if you have a second.  We have a major storm coming into Calif.

I have 60 ft plus Sequoia trees in my yard.  At 11 PM, when gusts began up to 80 MPH, I went out to street to see how far the trees were leaning.  Walking back up to house, I noticed 4 hooded youths (My Cousin Vinny) and 1 of them had just taken a peek into the very nice truck into the driveway of my neighbor.  I shown my flash light on these boys and within 3 seconds, the one who was scoping out the inside of the truck, standing in the guy's driveway while doing it, was standing beside me, asking me why I was shining myy flashlight on him, the rest came up slowly.   My 4 inch high Doxie dachshound and my flashlight was all I had at my disposal.  I have a piece but it was 10 steps away, ,in my office.  So, I said to him:  "Do you need an umbrella?"  Tried to look as stupid as I could when I said it.  Told these boys a major storm was on the way and they must go home immediately.  I again offered an umbrella so they would think I thought they were searching a very nice low rider chevy truck with a beautiful paint job for an umbrella.

Scared me badly.  These were hispanics I should add.  And this is what is to come.

Again, an either or argument: revolution or oppression. This is how the Elites form their arguments.

The reality is they require our acceptance of their governing structure to function. We must accept their financial, political and social laws. If we choose not to, if we decide to go our own way they're powerless in the face of 330 million people. No army is big enough.

Violence gives them cover AND will encourage much of the population to seek safety in their arms. This will negate the good work of those whom would advocate for liberty. Civil disobedience is a powerful force when wielded by intelligent leadership.

Fri, 12/12/2014 - 09:44 | 5543848 runningman18

A community providing its own security and removing state police from the equation is civil disobedience.  It's also important to make the distinction between "violence" and self defense.  It is inevitable that government will initiate violence whether we pick up our rifles or not.  Better to be armed and ready to defend ourselves rather than to be disarmed and hoping for mercy from psychopaths.  If the government wanted us to pick up our weapons to give them cover for tyranny, then why did they run away at Bundy Ranch?  I would think that would have been a perfect opportunity, unless they were in fact frightened that it might start a larger uprising.

Fri, 12/12/2014 - 10:02 | 5543914 Sean7k

Unfortunately, your version of self defense will devolve into civil war and the inescapable problem of who shot who, who started what and every other means to twist the narrative by a force which controls the information flow. Community security is a problem solved AFTER the evolution, not during civil disobedience.

It's a tough nut to crack, but it is the cost of allowing the State to develop into full blown totalitarianism.

He was the only one in his circle of colleagues who had enough dough to capitalize their startup, NWA. As compared to the police, who make a full time job out of intimidating and harassing people into giving them money. It's really that simple.

Eazy-E spent most of his short and harried life in avoidance of being harassed and threatened by the police. Meanwhile he provided a lot of value to society. His harassers are still there, however, continuing to shake down good people every day.

I see a contrast of two extremes, here

on one side, Item A: "After all, we have all been told every moment of our lives that a world without police would immediately turn into a frothing, frenzied orgy of mass insanity and that average human beings cannot be trusted to take responsibility for the day-to-day security of their neighborhoods and towns. Official doctrine today demands a designated warrior class, separate from the rest of us, to handle the protection and care of weakling citizens."

and on the other side, Item B: "Arguments that this will lead to a culture of "warlords" invariably pop up when discussing the concept of community based security.  Of course, when every member of a community is trained to defend themselves, abusive warlord do not last long, but then again, neither do abusive governments, which I suppose is the true reason why decentralized community security is treated with such disdain.  This is yet another contrived attempt to insinuate that the American people cannot be trusted with their own defense, but the government can."

now, as an european of a certain advanced age, I have seen too decades of TV shows and series made in America. This makes me nod to Item A's assertion that it was always a silly argument that without police, the world turns immediately into a frothing, frenzied orgy of mass insanity. Note the "the world". I do not know much about the US, but I do know something about the world, and I have been in places where police presence was intermittent, or very scarce

nevertheless, I do have to defend Item B, at least somewhat. A culture of "warlords" can, and often does pop up. Not immediately, but after a time, yes

and this has something to do with the usual "economic division of labour". After a while, needs are put in the hands of "specialists"

In Alexandria, Egypt, during the last revolution, various neighbourhood immediately organized themselves into peace-keeping militias. But after a while, most returned to work, and started to give money to those that were available to patrol the streets for a longer time. The economy has to go on, particularly in cities

Meanwhile, in many other places I visited in Africa and Asia, when this state continued... yes, eventually the permanent militia did evolve into "warlord gangs". Sometimes with the intermediate step of becoming first Mafia "families".

Note that in most places, the "ruling" mafia boss or the later really ruling warlord is a terribly respected member of the community. You genuinely hear only good things about him, for a while, and even if or when he "goes bad", many will defend his "work". The point is not this, the point is that he becomes... indispensable. And you can't change him anymore

At the terminal stage, he becomes a monarch in all but name. He becomes "the state". Terribly exciting for those who believe in personal sovereignty, but note that he is the sovereign, not you. You become a subject. Where I have to point out that the whole thing can be even quite persistent, and even romantic and economically successful. Best example: the Prince of Monaco. Yes, the guy that can call his police forces to pick up his girlfriend that is fleeing from the country at the airport and have her brought back to his palace. A journalistic tale that is difficult to prove in all details, and yet fully compatible with his real and existing powers in his fiefdom. After all, he pays the policemen's salaries

Meanwhile, the very same TV shows have another tale to tell: that of the rural county where one man (or family or set of families) is economically so dominant that the elected Sheriff, the elected Judge and nearly everything local is practically "in his pocket". And this is stuff I have seen, elsewhere in the world. In Ukraine, lately, local oligarchs organized fire brigades, militias, the works

as often, in human affairs, the question is of balance

- Too little "central state" or just "state" can lead to mafia, local oligarchs and, given time, even to warlords or local sovereigns (with subjects or even serfs)

- Too much "central state" or just "state" can lead to a state where a military or militarized police becomes something akin to an occupation army. Particularly if it was trained this way, and in cases their members were even deployed and fought this way, in foreign lands as army or in a revolution, and have not fully adapted back to civilian society

Thinking that the armed citizen, period, is "the solution"... Sorry, it does not work this way. "The world" does not work this way. The devil is in the details, and time has teeths

Fri, 12/12/2014 - 05:39 | 5543374 runningman18
runningman18's picture

Actually, it does work that way, though I think the author is promoting a slightly more complex idea than just "arming people".  He's talking about armed and trained communities, meaning everyone.  Warlords only take over in places where the citizens are not trained to defend themselves.  The residents of Michaocan, Mexico learned this lesson and drove out the cartels through force of arms, for example.  Anyone can put a bullet in a Warlord or a tyrant with the right training.  So much so that anyone with warlord aspirations would have serious second thoughts when faced with a trained community.  I can't think of a single historical instance where a warlord (or tyrant) rose to power without a weak, untrained, or disarmed population.

Fri, 12/12/2014 - 06:33 | 5543400 Ghordius
Ghordius's picture

I agree on a certain finer set of points you bring. But as I was trying to explain, this kind of corruption is continuos

Oligarchy and Mafia can lead to Warlords, for example, and Warlords/Pirate Kings can become full Sovereigns

"Anyone can put a bullet in..." is in my view not an argument. It applies everywhere, it just needs a sniper. And then? The replacement is often immediate, and nothing changes

Mafia bosses can rule quite well in heavily armed neighbourhoods. See Sicily

Oligarchs can rule quite well in conflict zones full of combatants. See Ukraine

Warlords often arise after a civil war where everybody is armed. See Somalia

Sometimes, "The Man" gets his place because everybody is armed and scared. It's fear of chaos, particularly after a long spell of chaos, that maintains his position. He provides protection and redress from torts, and most people don't have the time to protect themselves the whole day

I'm sorry, but I don't see the "armed population" argument. This does not mean I'm making a "disarm the population" argument, I'm just trying to point out that for me, the argument of "arm everybody, period, it's all it needs" is not factual, and not historic, and I can bring lots of examples from the "rest of the world"

"The residents of Michaocan, Mexico learned this lesson and drove out the cartels through force of arms..."

this is an excellent example. They organized themselves to a militia, in the face of organized cartels, i.e. "foreign" mafia gangs. Now... given time, they risk that the commander of this militia gets ideas. At the beginning, "good ideas", like he should be elected to train and upkeep a permanent watch. Which is the equivalent of a Mayor and Sheriff. He might also act as local arbiter, and advance to local Judge, to which people prefer to bring their disputes

What do you have, then? A "STATE". And every state can become corrupted. If this commander also starts to fiddle around the local economy, perhaps also by collecting taxes or having a monopoly on something in order to fund the "freedom peace corps of Michaocan", he can become the local oligarch

So Michaocan is, for all purposes, a polity with an armed population. Which nevertheless could become the fiefdom of a mafia boss, an oligarch or even a warlord. It does not have to, but it's not a given that it will not become something like that. Note that the "foreign" mafia gangs that Michaocan's people drove off... already function so

Fri, 12/12/2014 - 06:57 | 5543438 runningman18
runningman18's picture

Yes, if people do not remain vigilant, and do not continue to defend themselves, another warlord or tyrant could take over.  But I fail to see how this is an argument.  As long as there is vigilance and an armed populace, there can be no tyrants.  If a militia commander "gets ideas", then the community can put him down as well.

There is no solution to human frailty.  It's always going to be there.  But there is such a thing as principles and honor, too.  To say that the armed population strategy will not work because it "might" lead to another form of corruption is a hypothetical argument that can't possibly be addressed because none of us can see into the future.  But, it worked in Ferguson, and it worked at Bundy Ranch, and it could very well work again.  We do what we can with what we have.  When someone comes along with a better plan, and actually applies it succesfully instead of just talking philosophically about it, then I'd be happy to adopt it too.

Fri, 12/12/2014 - 07:42 | 5543460 Ghordius
Ghordius's picture

Wait a moment. "To say that the armed population strategy will not work..." I am just saying it's not enough, alone. If you want, I could somehow hazard that's irrelevant

btw, principles and honour? Mafia bosses function on the principle of honour. It's just that their honour does not involve your "rights"

and I'm not sure what you are hinting to with Ferguson and Bundy Ranch. Remember, I know a bit the "rest of the world", and very little about the US

Fact is that the police, the mafia boss, the warlord and the oligarch & local sovereign all have one thing in common: they provide ordermy question is only on the quality of order, which can decay, particularly if you have only one source of order

again, I'm only saying that "let's all arm ourselves, that's all it needs" is simply wrong, not factual and not historic. it is not as simple as that, but of course it's good business for the arms industry, which I suspect likes to put it in such simple terms

a better plan? personally, I like that of putting the citizen fore and front. Meaning a republic based on democratic principles, with a government that is not allowed to do certain things, and this includes of course a proper civilian and civil police force, with a proper judicial system with more then one course of redress. And yes, at the end this means a balance between the local and the "central". But that is my plan, and might not be liked by everyone

But again, I'm in europe, and we have different checks and balances, and a different "police culture". I, for example, am in favour of IDs. I like the fact that a (continental) policemen here can ask for my ID, for the simple reason that as soon as he has identified me, he has practically no "angle" to take me with him if he has no serious proof of any kind of wrongdoing, and it has to be a serious wrongdoing. On the other side, we have no private prisons, here. But that's us, and I'm not propagandizing our ways, customs or laws

to come back to your argument, "...then the community can put him down as well", well, does the community "put him down" if he is a very well respected tyrant? the biggest employer of the community? the hero of a revolution, or the defender of the village from the other mafia gangs? historically, often no. historically, his son or nephew takes over

except if you are talking about a community that is for all purposes a functioning republic with a constitution and a somewhat complex set of checks and balances, and several sources of order and redress. that's historically the path to a longer time without corruption

Fri, 12/12/2014 - 09:23 | 5543754 runningman18
runningman18's picture

Perhaps it's not enough "alone", but no one is making that argument.  What I'm saying, and what I believe the author is saying, is that you can't have a free society without a population armed and trained to provide its own defense.  You're imagining assertions that just aren't there.

I'm not "hinting" at anything in terms of Ferguson or Bundy Ranch, I'm saying outright that the armed citizen concept worked in those situations, just as it did in Michaocan.  Where are the warlords in Michaocan?  In Ferguson?  In Clark County?  If community security worked in those places, why not other places.  I'm not sure why you think the spot on the map is relevant.

Tyrants don't provide "order", they create chaos and fear in order to drive the population to give them more control.  I would say true order requires a natural stability, which tyrants wouldn't know how to provide even if they wanted to.

I'm not sure what the arms industry has to do with anything, but as you are from Europe, I'm sure you have all kinds of misconceptions on the gun business fed to you since childhood.  Americans had gun rights long before there was a gun lobby, just to be clear.

Your "plan" is not really a plan; its a goal.  The goal of a proper judicial system and a limited government is nice, but how do you attain those things?  Show me a plan to make those goals a reality.

Also, I know of no "well respected" tyrants in history, only tyrants who used fear, coercion, and false division in order to rule.  A tyrant can't explolit the fear of the public if they have no fear.  He can't rule through coercion if they are armed, organized, and trained to fight.  Division is also difficult if communities train together and share the same respect for liberty.

Finally, a republic with a constitution and checks and balances does not sustain itself.  Eventually, someone somewhere is going to try to undermine it, or take it away completely.  Eventually, common people will have to fight in order to preserve their freedom.  This is a fact of history, not my personal theory, and it goes for Europeans as much as it goes for Americans.  The EU is just as screwed as our nation, if not more so, and, most of you are disarmed.  I honestly have a hard time imagining a scenario where the people there escape globalism and technocracy given your inability to fight back.

All of your examples take place within Western style governing structures. This is important, because the law gives criminals protection from the people who might rise up against them. This was the case in Mexico, where the government sent the army in to disarm the local "militia".

Likewise, in Somalia, a western supported governing structure was introduced, maintained and funded- including weapons which could then be used by warring clans- clans which once worked together under a Xeer system of cooperation.

As all States become corrupted, the solution becomes very simple: no establishment of a ruling apparatus is to be allowed under any circumstance. This would give rise to other solutions, solutions which were never contemplated because of the State structure. Humans are very creative and to always sell them short is to accept the yammerings of Plato and the rest (spoiled wealth class wannabees whom wanted access to the power system via democracy, while maintaining the slave class they depended on).

To describe europe in a manner which ignores its' rampant debt slavery is problematic and thus, must follow from a misplaced patriotism or fear of the unknown. However, you do dress your Statist views in a most appealing manner.

I’ll take the local war lord over the system that is capable of putting a cruise missile through my bedroom window.  Warlords have a limited shelf life.  The imperial state for all practical purposes is immortal.

you are somewhat correct, and it's your preference. Though the "imperial state" does that mostly to foreigners, doesn't it? Meanwhile the local lord might be a bit more personal. To the point that you might want to keep your daughters at home, and hide them. Saddam Hussein, for all purposes, was a warlord on a grand scale, and he liked pretty much to snatch away pretty girls whenever he saw them. The families had to regard themselves honoured, of course

What a fantastic article!  Like Christ stated, "Every plant, which my heavenly Father hath not planted, shall be rooted up."  They can build this mammoth police state and have us all in lock down, but they will reap what they have sown and suffer the consequences themselves.  Hitler built this all-powerful Third Reich but in the end he was fighting against God and was swept away.  God let's governments do their thing, but then He speaks and has the last word.  The police state becomes more and more tyrannical and many innocent lives are being lost - I often think of that verse, "It is time for Thee to work, Lord, for they have made void Thy law."  Right makes might and eventually triumphs over wrong.

"...it is important to note that there are in fact many good people working in the field of law enforcement"

I don't criticise Brandon for saying this, because it has virtually become a standard requirement for anybody who dares to criticise the police, to preface their criticism with such words.

It's similar to the pandering to police by politicians and the police top brass themselves who claim "this is the action of a few rotten apples" whenever (yet) another case of police corruption or criminality is exposed.

The truth is that corruption and criminality within the police have become systemic.

The "rotten apple" syndrome has infected the police at all levels. The police now see their mission - not of protecting the public - but of protecting the ruling elites "from" the public. As such they are no longer a public service.

Yes - a shocking cliche we have here. And  "it is important to note".  You have to stick your thumbs in your lapels for that one and hope your top hat is on straight.

The President can moan all he wants about police being too heavy handed towards blacks and minorities, but he shares a great deal of the responsibility.  Over the last six years while Obama has been in office the unrelentless trend to add a military component to police forces across the nation has continued to ramp up.

Many people see this as the governments way to extend control and power over the masses in case of a civil uprising in the future. More and more we see those paid with our tax dollars driving aggressive macho vehicles and strutting around in black uniforms with a swagger of intimidation. The article below delves deeper into this ugly trend and the issue of who holds this power.

"For the true constitutional police out there"...that is when and where I stopped reading.

I miss the Brandon of 5 years ago..  when he penned himself as Giordano Bruno. before he bugged out at Alt Market..when he was running Neither Corp website and wrote about Jungian archetypes and synchronicity and had cool artwork and music on that site...before all the fear set in.  When you look at the progression of his writing, it is pretty evident that it changed to adapt to the "times". Still an all around good chap, just sucks to see that particular spark fade. Best of luck to him.

If you want the public to take over the duties of Big Government regulators, cops, politicians and the military you are going to have to develop far healthier and capable citizens than we have now.  Anarchy is doable with exceptionally capable people.

Todays fear and anxiety-induced sheeple are incapable of being independent, competent and defending themselves.  They need Big Government to handle every perceived threat.

See this pro anarchy clip from anonymous to see what you're getting into.

I believe in the long run after fiat currencies are devalued and genuine money returns to society, the future will belong to the low cost producer of goods and the highly capable and healthy low-cost anarchists will inherit the earth.

The sick, high cost, pro Big-Government sheeple are going to die like flies.
