14 Facts That Show The Number Of Children Living In Poverty This Christmas Is At A Record High

Tyler Durden's picture

Submitted by Michael Snyder of The Economic Collapse blog,

Did you know that 65 percent of all children in the United States live in a home that receives aid from the federal government?  We live at a time when child poverty in America is exploding.  Yes, the U.S. economy is experiencing a temporary bubble of false stability for the moment, but even during this period of false stability the gap between the wealthy and the poor continues to rapidly expand and the middle class is being systematically destroyed.  And sadly, this is having a disproportionate impact on children.  This is happening for a couple of reasons.  First of all, poorer households tend to have more children than wealthier households.  Secondly, most people tend to have children when they are in their young adult years, and right now young adults are being absolutely hammered by this economy.  As a result, things just continue to get even worse for children living in this country.

Here are 14 facts that show that the number of children in America living in poverty this Christmas is at an all-time record high…

#1 The National Center for Children in Poverty says that 45 percent of all U.S. children belong to low income families.

#2 According to a Census Bureau report that was released just this week, 65 percent of all children in America are living in a home that receives some form of aid from the federal government…

“Almost two-thirds (65 percent) of children,” said the Census Bureau, “lived in households that participated in at least one or more of the following government aid programs: Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC), Medicaid, and the National School Lunch Program.”

#3 According to a report recently released by UNICEF, almost one-third of all children in this country “live in households with an income below 60 percent of the national median income”.

#4 When it comes to child poverty, the United States ranks 36th out of the 41 “wealthy nations” that UNICEF looked at.

#5 An astounding 45 percent of all African-American children in America live in areas of “concentrated poverty”.

#6 40.9 percent of all children in the United States that are living with only one parent are living in poverty.

#7 These days, a lot of single mothers are really, really struggling to survive.  A decade ago, the number of women in America that had jobs outnumbered the number of women in America on food stamps by more than a 2 to 1 margin.  But now the number of women in America on food stamps actually exceeds the total number of women that have jobs.

#8 It is hard to believe, but right now 49 million Americans are dealing with food insecurity.

#9 According to a report that was released last month by the National Center on Family Homelessness, the number of homeless children in the United States has reached a new all-time high of 2.5 million.

#10 There are more than half a million homeless children in the state of California alone.

#11 One recent survey found that about 22 percent of all Americans have had to turn to a church food panty for assistance.

#12 This year, almost one out of every five households in the United States will go through the holiday season on food stamps.

#13 One of the primary reasons why kids are suffering so much is because their parents are simply not making enough money.  This is especially true for parents of young children.  For example, check out the following numbers from the Atlantic

Since the Great Recession struck in 2007, the median wage for people between the ages of 25 and 34, adjusted for inflation, has fallen in every major industry except for health care.

These numbers come from an analysis of the Census Current Population Survey by Konrad Mugglestone, an economist with Young Invincibles.

In retail, wholesale, leisure, and hospitality—which together employ more than one quarter of this age group—real wages have fallen more than 10 percent since 2007. To be clear, this doesn’t mean that most of this cohort are seeing their pay slashed, year after year. Instead it suggests that wage growth is failing to keep up with inflation, and that, as twentysomethings pass into their thirties, they are earning less than their older peers did before the recession.

#14 Overall, the quality of the jobs in America continues to decline.  At this point, most Americans do not bring home enough income to support a middle class lifestyle for their families.  Below I have shared an excerpt from an article that I published a while back

The following are some statistics about wages in the U.S. from a Social Security Administration report that was recently released

-39 percent of American workers made less than $20,000 last year.

-52 percent of American workers made less than $30,000 last year.

-63 percent of American workers made less than $40,000 last year.

-72 percent of American workers made less than $50,000 last year.

In addition to all of these numbers, there is also a lot of anecdotal evidence that families with children are really struggling right now.

For example, McDonald’s has traditionally been a place where poor and middle class families have taken their children for a cheap meal.  But the restaurant chain just released the worst sales numbers that we have seen in more than a decade.

And the really bad news is that this is just the beginning of the economic pain for families with children.  The U.S. economy is in a bubble period right now, and the authorities have been trying with all of their might to keep the bubble inflated.

Just imagine a bodybuilder that is pressing with all of his might to do one more rep on the bench press.  That is essentially where we are at.  In a recent piece, Brian Pretti summarized some of the extraordinary measures that global central banks have taken to keep the economic bubble inflated…

Since early 2009, central banks globally have printed more than $13 trillion. In addition, governments across the planet have increased their borrowings at historic proportions (the US just crossed $18T – another new high!), all in an effort to stimulate economies and avoid deflationary pressures. Total US Federal debt has more than doubled in five years, an increase of $9.5 trillion and counting.

Despite all of these efforts, the best that we have achieved is economic stagnation.

And now it is becoming clear that the overwhelming deflationary forces around the globe are starting to win the battle.  The central banks have used up their ammunition and they still have not turned things around.  In fact, as Ambrose Evans-Pritchard so eloquently put it recently, what we see all around us is “evidence of a 1930s-style depression, albeit one that is still contained”…

What is clear is that the world has become addicted to central bank stimulus. Bank of America said 56pc of global GDP is currently supported by zero interest rates, and so are 83pc of the free-floating equities on global bourses. Half of all government bonds in the world yield less that 1pc. Roughly 1.4bn people are experiencing negative rates in one form or another.

These are astonishing figures, evidence of a 1930s-style depression, albeit one that is still contained. Nobody knows what will happen as the Fed tries to break out of the stimulus trap, including Fed officials themselves.

But will it still be contained once the next major financial crash strikes?

As I discussed yesterday, there has never been a time when conditions have been more ideal for a financial crisis since the last one happened in 2008.

So as bad as things are for the children of America right now, they are only going to get worse.

In the years ahead may we all have great compassion for these victims of our incredibly foolish economic mistakes.

~"#1 The National Center for Children in Poverty says that 45 percent of all U.S. children belong to low income families."~

And does this matter?

Not one fuckin' iota.

And here's the proof:

The Obama administration is importing more of them to "distribute" around the country. Because this somehow will help the "disadvantaged" ones that are already here, right?

Face it: these "children in poverty" are just so much political cannon fodder. And that goes for both the ones here and the ones they import. Dreamer, my ass.

Ha Ha Mr Goodman, don't get too worked up, the figure is way higher than 45%. Its likely 95%. After all, aren't all gov't employees getting welfare in the form of way too high wages and benifits? Arent all the companies who deal with govt getting welfare inn the form of way too high of prices on what they sell to that gov't? Arent all Medical and insurance employees in the same boat due to forcing everyone into Obamacare? Aren't the wall street whores and politicians on a teat with their insider trading? Seems to me there are damn few people in the middle to bear the load anymore.

A country that can pass a $1.1 TRILLION appropriations bill and is raking in over $400 BILLION a month from their tax collectors cannot bitch about children in poverty. Sorry, I just don't buy it.

 LetThemEat Rand,

So, are we to believe the "war on drugs" is really about drugs?

And the prison industry and the drug wars are not the main causes

for the incarceration rates

and the inability (criminal record along with the lack of jobs) of lower class families to support themselves ? (Many 'drug felons' denied even the right to vote also.)

Why don't 'they' get educated at the free colleges? Oh wait.

It's all innate, is it? Just like with the Irish and Italian immigrants before?

When exactly did "Jim Crow" laws and "Jim Crow" enforcement end?

Is WIC (nutrional food vouchers for children) the first place to cut before F-35 fighters and TBTF handouts (as was just legislated)?

Yes, crime and poverty create and magnify problems, but they are themselves formed on a wider foundation of power, theft, and repression. Otherwise, it is much like having a war on "terror" without looking at the actual causes. Oh wait, is it the "muslims"?

Now who the hell do you suppose is lobbying to feed the children? Seems Soouthern Baptist Church was paid at the rate of $225,000 per illegal per year to care for them. Times that by 4000 kids. Who was lobbying for free cell phones? Of course it wasn't the illegals, it was the cell phone companies. They get sales and you get to pay. So follow the fucking money and start to realize who the real leeches and welfare cases are. They usually arent the poor bastards trying to better their lives, its the super greedy cockroaches with all the money, thats who it is.

I find it interesting that the tenor of most of these comments centers on government dependence of the poorer classes. And while I agree that government dependence is absolutely debilitating, robbing people of ambition while taking one man's labor and providing the fruits of that labor to another, the real government dependence is at the top. Moreover, it is directed from the top.

Stop the welfare of the .01 percenters, ie the elimination of fractional banking and fiat money, and I am certain you all know the tax payer is back on the hook for derivatives play, or, here is an idea... print money and hand it out to the bottom 99 percent and see how long it takes to shift the concentration of wealth (and yes, I am quite aware of the destructive and immoral nature of this, but it would be an amusing experiment... that is before the accelerated debauchery of human character led to a complete fall of society... but hell, it is going to fall anyway guys).

To blame the poor for having the mentality of poor people is a rather fruitless enterprise. They are not the ones who rigged this system, and in their place you folks would do pretty much the same thing. The real question is what are we going to do about it, and the answer to that question is nothing. We are way too far down this road to turn around and go back. To mix metaphors, the bill collector's at the door people and he is going to collect, and all of us are going to pay up.

Then we shall see if there is something left with which to rebuild.

There is no wealth inequality and speaking about it is class-warfare.  For example, I read an article here the other day that pointed out there are a couple dozen self-made billionaires out of several hundred, so America in total is still the land of opportunity etc. (because all the matters for determining same is the number of self-made billionaires).

"Whether the mask is labelled Fascism, Democracy, or Dictatorship of the Proletariat, our great adversary remains the Apparatus—the bureaucracy, the police, the military. Not the one facing us across the frontier or the battlelines, which is not so much our enemy as our brother's enemy, but the one that calls itself our protector and makes us its slaves. No matter what the circumstances, the worst betrayal will always be to subordinate ourselves to this Apparatus, and to trample underfoot, in its service, all human values in ourselves and in others."

A thought experiment for you, what if these "checks & balances" are only an illusion of the people having some control? Not the idea of...having checks & balances on the system...but as a practical matter.

There can be no doubt that Jon Corzine is not in ass pounding prison and John Roberts bent himself into a pretzel to say something was a tax when the Executive and a majority of Congress initially said it wasn't and that was not the purpose or intent. If they are willing to manipulate, decieve, lie, show zero self control, restraint or responsibility for what they do, then there are no legal checks & balances left are there?

Every time in history when there has been oppression, the State has its arsenal they wield for control. Rome has the most sophisticated military capability of the time and used it effectively to capture and conquer many. Few could resist enslavement through their tactical and technological advancements. However, they became complacent and rotted from within. Key uprisings cost valuable territories to be lost. They eventually collapsed.

Do not be so impressed by bells and whistles. Human courage and the will for freedom prevails.

Assuming that, it might make sense to fight the enabling reliance of the gov.

Of course we should also do that to banksters.

Miffed...seeing more kids born lately to what was middle class women who see nothing wrong in having babies out of wedlock and to the expense of the taxpayer. This is no longer black or low income issue..that is so 1970's. Looks to be more of a moral less society issue.

I have seen this as well. Recently while thumbing through a woman's magazine ( egads, they make me ill) I noticed an article where a 40 year old professional chronicalled her life story how her career was her life and men were on the side. Then she realized she wanted a child and got inseminated. This was presented as a good thing, a beacon of hope to the rich single professional women that, yes, you can have it all. I was utterly aghast at the shallowness of the action. She wanted a child like a new designer handbag. It was something she just wanted. The welfare and benefit for the child was never mentioned. Only that she was rich and could provide for him. Nothing was presented as a negative to this action.

Though I admit the majority of babies born to single mothers is in the lower income classes, this showed me the moral decay and narcissism is infecting women at higher income levels as well. Just because they can pay for it doesn't mean the action is correct.

I find just watching and reading such things is so repugnant to me now I just want to escape to a hidden cave in the mountains, cut off from the horror to what our society has become.

Good point. Just today, I was in the checkout line behind an older couple who was caring for their toddler grandchild. The couple were buying a lot of baby food to feed the toddler. I had the distinct impression the grandparents had become the defacto parents of the kid. Even though the grandparents likely had to disrupt their retirement to raise their grandchild, at least the kid will grow up in a comparitively normal household, and hopefully avoid prison later in life.

Forward (over the cliff)!

You need not look any farther than the church to realize why so many young women are having baby after baby, with nothing to offer them but a state sponsored life.  Thank the Church as a pregnant woman is praised OH YOU ARE PREGNANT!!! YIPPPEEEE   GOOOD  JOB.  As if getting pregnant takes some kind of talent.  The growing congregation can mean only one thing - MORE MONEY.   Oh just love to offer but that is about it.  and if the young girl has issues from some dysfunction that only Oprah can drag out of a person (Tell us about it, tell us everything, leave nothing out), then grandpa can foot the bill and grandma can take responsibility of the path this new baby who will be a person to be dealt with, with no thanks from anyone.  We are a nation of personality disorders, issues that require analgesia (street drugs will do, thanks, CIA).

perhaps all these young "Mother Mary" types have an instinct for survival kicking in, and see their immaculate conceptions as a means to be cared for (by a congregation who sells this idea to them originally, no?).

all the hate focused on them outside of the pew-class - and absolutely NEVER mentioned are the sperm donors who impregnated them?  so obviously, no sperm happened, it wuz gawd's will for these baybees to be born.

Yet another Snyder listicle.  Fuck you, Michael Snyder.

"These days, a lot of single mothers are really, really struggling to survive.  A decade ago, the number of women in America that had jobs outnumbered the number of women in America on food stamps by more than a 2 to 1 margin.  But now the number of women in America on food stamps actually exceeds the total number of women that have jobs."

Bulllllshit.  Single mothers on food stamps (who probably have Medicaid, Section 8 housing, Obamaphones, utility assistance, etc. as well) live better than single mothers who work.  For reference, see the gazillion articles the Tylers have posted with pretty charts and graphs and shit.  If the total number of wimmin in 'Murica on food stamps exceeds the total number of women that have jobs, then they are doing much better as a whole.

And, for fuck's sake, don't use the term "food insecurity".  That's more of that blue pill word obfuscation like "differently abled" and "______ challenged" that makes me want to kick puppies with spike-soled boots.  They are not insecure in their food, they just don't have parents who are willing to bust their asses to feed them.

"Did you know that 65 percent of all children in the United States live in a home that receives aid from the federal government?"

Welfare should more accurately be called "rebate." They steal the wealth and opportunities from you directly, or indirectly,  and then steal your dignity with a "rebate"of your own wealth.

An EBT card is really a rebate of opportunities stolen.

WIC is a rebate of part of that 15% FICA you pay.

Section 8 is a rebate on rents pushed up by the banksters' price inflation, and a way to divide the neighbors.

PELL Grants are a rebate of the tuition inflation caused by other grants and loans.

An American, not US subject.

"If I don't pay taxes, they will cage me. If I pay taxes they will give me welfare. How about we just call not paying taxes self funded welfare?"

No iPhones, no TVs, no EBT cards - they play soccer with a patched up ball - no fancy cleats, no shin guards, no tech-T's, etc, etc. They don't know about these things - so they do not miss them. No one has promised them anything. They play, they have fun, they grow up, they work - and they do not riot and burn down their town.

The US cannot afford to pay its poor to live at what some consider the 'poverty level'. When the day of reckoning comes, and the US poor face what the Guatemalans see each day - and what existed in the US not that long ago - what will happen?

Too many people give NO thought to having kids today.  There's little downside to having kids you really can't afford with all the aid available.  Now you can argue that there needs to be a 'safety net' of sorts but we do seem to have far exceeded that.

We waited over a decade to have kids - and were college educated making decent money.  In contrast we have relatives who had kids right off, got divorced and pretty much guaranteed themselves poverty.  A niece who barely got through HS got married and divorced within 18 months - though pregnant (without knowing it for 6 months) when divorced.  She pawns the kid off on relatives at any opportunity - I pity the kid.  She will NEVER get beyond minimum wage jobs and seems destined for a series of similarly employed 'boyfriends'.

I've been doing genealology research on my family and it's quite informative.  Even WITHOUT reliable birth control you had SMALL families during the Great Depression.  Many people NEVER married - you had a 'bachelor' son or 'old maid' daughter taking care of Mom and Dad until they died.  If they then got married - late in life - odds are they didn't have ANY kids.  Pretty common actually.  Lots of older Aunts and Uncles with no kids of their own.   People did NOT get married as early as you might think.  Men got 'established' before marrying in their mid to late 20's.  Well off families - thoe showing serious assets on census forms had more children (and servants) while the working class ones tended to have smaller families.  Boys were working in their late teens - if not earlier.  You lived with your parents until you married - sometimes after.  You MIGHT go to live as a 'boarder' if you were working elsewhere - or were apprenticed out.   That's a term you NEVER hear today.    If parents died, kids went to relatives.  Out of wedlock children were very much a scandal - I clearly remember stories of one case in the 1930's.  If you chose 'badly' odds are you lasted it out and tolerated the situation.  Divorce was a rarity.  One great grand aunt married a real SOB during the 'Roaring 20's ' to get out of a strict house.  She wanted to go back home after her first kid but her parents refused.  He drank too much, screwed around and hit her.  She made excuses for the situation for the rest of her life ('He like me because I fight back....' WTF?)   Now you shouldn't have to stay in an abusive relationship but hell.... too many people make BAD choices and bail out - with everyone else footing the bill..... one of my wife's sisters married badly - and now seems to forget the years living on welfare, still never taking responsibility for her bad choices in life.  On the other hand you have people getting divorced because they're not 'fulfilled' - they wanted a 'soulmate' and got a real world relationship.  Hell - in the past you often married for very pragmatic reasons (her father owned the farm next to yours and he didn't have any sons), married someone with a similar background (from a very few choices in smaller towns) or married someone because your first wife died and you needed a mother for you children.  One guy in the 1800's had 3 wives - clearly the first 2 died with children in the house - the last wife was obviously the servant 'girl' who was likely thrilled with the 'move up.'

We've gotten to a point where there's little personal responsibility or accountability for the choices you make in life.  Your family tolerates your screw ups because they no longer have to bear the cost.  In times past you might get disowned if you really pissed off your parents.... hell - in one case the eldest son was disinherited for NOT marrying a Baptist....   Hell.....today you can have a half dozen illegitimate kids and nobody cares.

A middle class beautiful, educated, hard-working American woman gets almost no aid when she brings up babies. A poor, lazy, obese, unmarried foreign woman gets the largest amount of aid.

This goes against the nature. A charming, clever, kind woman marries the best man and makes children. A kid of a lazy and poor woman  dies.

Now suppose you got your way and lined up all those with under $50,000 a year incomes and shoved em off a cliff or filled a big boat or 3 and sent them to china? DO you think you're done with poverty? LOL, fuck no, those with $100,000 and under jobs would be the new lower class. And the top $10% would pick the middle classes bones to death and feed those lower class, same as always, as thats their support base. Always has worked like that and always will. I'd encourage everyone to follow the fucking money. I dont see any of oit ending up in bank accounts of the lower class of people. I do see all of it ending up in the accounts of the top class of people.

I should clarify that a bit. By class of people I am referring to economic class only. Its quite obvious some at the top have no class and some at the bottom have lots.

That said, welcome to 0baMao's Amerika-and we were invaded over the summer by tens of thousands of kids from south of the border. This part of his marxist Utopia.

Blame the Unions.

Years ago, those children and their spawning prone mothers would be gainfully employed in the mines somewhere.

Not today, thanks to union rules.

A bit  cruel but the problem is that women are incentivized to have lots of children that they cannot support by themselves. The system works against those who marry and have only the number of kids the can afford. They end up paying for the birthing units who keep popping out little turdlers every year.

We need people to have children, but unfortunately the sort of people that are reproducing the most are not the ones that benefit society.

It seems that the greatest population growth is from the dependent sector, and they ain't producing many engineers, scientists and people that create value and improve our nation.

"... may we all have great compassion for these victims of our incredibly foolish economic mistakes."

How about, when the SHTF and the rage of a demeaned, abused, economically terrorized people finally bursts forth, "may we all recognize and embrace it as our own."

That Mexican-American mother has had to go through Hell proving to endless petty beaurocrats that she's poor enough to get food for her babies, not to mention having to eat all kinds of shit to hold on to poverty-wage jobs, when she could get them.  When our nice pretty educated middle-class mothers' anger boils over because she needs help and there is no help, fingers will point at that Chicana mother and say "her fault!"  But is not Betsy's pain, is not her outrage, ultimately the same pain, the same outrage as Rosalita's? As our own?

Did we not all dream the same American Dream?

As the system implodes, our test will be not which of us will have compassion with the poor and their children; it will be which of us will stand together with them against the billionaires, oligarchs and kleptocrats and their high-class goons, toadies and tricksters.

Free contraception, socialized medicine, wealth transfer payments to sluggards, lower standards for coloreds, open borders, crony corporatism, green energy, and ecology first will solve these problems.
