President Obama "Normalizes" Relations With Cuba, Opens Diplomatic Channels; USAID Chief Resigns - Live Feed

Tyler Durden's picture

Odd... during a week when President Obama prepares to launch new sanctions against Venezuela and Russia, The White House admits, “It is clear that decades of U.S. isolation of Cuba have failed to accomplish our enduring objective of promoting the emergence of a democratic, prosperous, and stable Cuba."

Diplomatic relations between the United States and Cuba were severed in January 1961 after the rise of Fidel Castro and his Communist government. Mr. Obama has instructed Secretary of State John Kerry to immediately initiate discussions with Cuba about reestablishing diplomatic relations and to begin the process of removing Cuba from the list of states that sponsor terrorism, which it has been on since 1982, the White House said.

President Obama will speak on the matter at 12:01ET....

The Good news...

Here's The President in 2010... Statement by the President on the Human Rights Situation in Cuba

Recent events in Cuba, including the tragic death of Orlando Zapata Tamayo, the repression visited upon Las Damas de Blanco, and the intensified harassment of those who dare to give voice to the desires of their fellow Cubans, are deeply disturbing.

These events underscore that instead of embracing an opportunity to enter a new era, Cuban authorities continue to respond to the aspirations of the Cuban people with a clenched fist.

Today, I join my voice with brave individuals across Cuba and a growing chorus around the world in calling for an end to the repression, for the immediate, unconditional release of all political prisoners in Cuba, and for respect for the basic rights of the Cuban people.

During the course of the past year, I have taken steps to reach out to the Cuban people and to signal my desire to seek a new era in relations between the governments of the United States and Cuba.  I remain committed to supporting the simple desire of the Cuban people to freely determine their future and to enjoy the rights and freedoms that define the Americas, and that should be universal to all human beings.

*  *  *

And today, as Bloomberg reports,

White House says measures will “end our outdated approach,” promote change in Cuba consistent “with U.S. national security interests”

In coming mos., U.S. “will re-establish an embassy in Havana and carry out high-level exchanges and visits between our two governments as part of the normalization process”

Initial step will involve U.S.-Cuba Migration Talks in Jan.

U.S. institutions will be allowed to open accounts at Cuban financial institutions for authorized transactions; U.S. credit, debit cards permitted for use by travelers to Cuba

Travelers can import $400 of goods from Cuba, no more than $100 of tobacco, alcohol combined

White House moving to expand exports of U.S. goods, services incl. building materials, agricultural equipment, communications devices

Lifts sanctions on Cuban nationals outside Cuba

Changes announced will be implemented via amendments to U.S. Treasury, Commerce Dept regulations

*  *  *

Senate Foreign Relations Chairman Robert Menendez is not happy...

"This is a moment of profound relief for Alan Gross and his family. Mr. Gross' physical and mental health has declined severely as a result of his five-year imprisonment under difficult conditions.  He should have been released immediately and unconditionally five years ago.  He committed no crime and was simply working to provide internet access to Cuba's small Jewish community.  His imprisonment was cruel and arbitrary, but consistent with the behavior of the Cuban regime.

“Let's be clear, this was not a "humanitarian" act by the Castro regime. It was a swap of convicted spies for an innocent American.

“President Obama's actions have vindicated the brutal behavior of the Cuban government. There is no equivalence between an international aid worker and convicted spies who were found guilty of conspiracy to commit espionage against our nation. One spy was also convicted of conspiracy to murder for his role in the 1996 tragedy in which the Cuban military shot down two U.S. civilian planes, killing several American citizens. My heart goes out to the American families that lost love ones on that fateful day.

“Trading Mr. Gross for three convicted criminals sets an extremely dangerous precedent.  It invites dictatorial and rogue regimes to use Americans serving overseas as bargaining chips.  I fear that today’s actions will put at risk the thousands of Americans that work overseas to support civil society, advocate for access to information, provide humanitarian services, and promote democratic reforms.

“This asymmetrical trade will invite further belligerence toward Cuba's opposition movement and the hardening of the government’s dictatorial hold on its people. Let us all remind ourselves that an untold number of ordinary people yearning for democracy remain imprisoned by the exact same tormentors that have punished Alan Gross and they, along with all Cubans, deserve a free and liberated Cuba."

*  *  *

And then there is this...

Rajiv Shah, the administrator for the U.S. Agency for International Development, abruptly resigned on Wednesday after US and Cuba announced plans to normalize relations and exchange prisoners.

USAID oversaw secret US programs aimed at regime change in Cuba.

Gross was caught on his 4th trip bringing in large amounts of communication equipments including CIA and DoD's special issue signal scrambler. His mission was funded by what amounts to the CIA's civilian arm (USAID) with the goal of using Havana's small Jewish community as a base to overthrow the then new (Raul's) government.

This is about boxing out Russia.

Obviously.

Ought to be good for MLB, though.

Bath House was the perfect agent to put in power to destroy the culture, religion, and morality of the old USA.

A foreign operative, raised to hate the US and its citizens, Bath House has continued to succeed backed by the Banksters who own him and the US Congress.

It is truly astonishing to watch him dismantle the United States w/o any opposition.

He has two more years.

He will not be stopped.

Bath House would welcome a tyrannical state, allowing him to have the Glory while following the Orders of his Masters. Failing that, a fratricidal civil war would be plan #2, forever reducing the US to a bankrupt, lawlless land as an easy target for whatever military force the PTB wish to insert under cover of their UN Corporation.

The Cuban announcement is a declaration of war against Americans. No longer can American jobs and American culture be protected by a representative government - because that government is Communist, international, and completely controlled by international bankers who have no loyalty to American citizens.

These bankers, in fact, appear to have the goal of dissolving the estates of the American middle class so that a world of control over workers and resources can be established by these obscenely ambitious oligarchs.

The Cuban announcement is a rapid accompaniment to the amnesty that Obama already has established. Yes, these Cubans are a Democrat votes but more than that they are the symbol of a declining America.

In addition to not only more Mexicans, and now more Cubans, but more Syrians are slated to enter the country.

As Retiring Rep. Jim Moran (D), northern Virginia, pointed out regarding the Cromnibus:

“ *$3.06 billion has been provided, $1.01 billion above the President’s request for Refugees and Internally Displaced Persons. (P. 52 Democrat summary). Recall that in September Simon Henshaw, deputy assistant secretary of State’s Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration, announced: “Next year, you will see thousands [of Syrians] entering the US. We are committed to a large program on a par with other large [refugee resettlement] programs in the past… Our commitment is to do thousands a year over many years,” he said. There are over 1 million Syrian refugees in Turkey who have fled Syria’s civil war. “Our resettlement program from Turkey is one of our largest in the world, and it will continue to grow.”

I sometimes wonder if Cloward and Piven were not underwritten in grants by TPTB.

It is quite obvious their puppet has been instructed to allow unlimited immigration by non-white peoples to undermine the original US composition.

These immigrants are being gifted monies and benefits not allowed to US native-born people.

Israel does not allow this type of activity. The Zionistas and their cohorts wish to reduce the white European countries to a mass of immigrants designed to destroy their cultures, split them into ethnic enclaves, then Rule over them.

Mandela’s funeral gave politicians the world over – from Rubio to Obama - the chance to jump on board the new racism.

When votes are at stake, color is the key.

Fallen conservative idol, Marco Rubio, provided a disgusting example of politicians positioning themselves to get votes.

In his “let’s fix immigration” spiel, Rubio actually wove in a declaration of how men like Mandela have spread democracy and human rights around the world. According to Rubio on Hannity, it was all right for Mandela, a communist, to rise up in a genocidal campaign against Whites, but it was not all right for Communist Raul Castro to persecute Cubans.

Barack Obama, July 17, 2012, in a Statement on Nelson Mandela International Day, said:

"On a personal note, our family has been insepired by Madiba's (Mandela’s) example… By any measure, Nelson Mandela has changed the arc of history, transforming his country, continent, and the world."

The late Nelson Mandela and his wife Winnie called Cuba their “second home.”  Here is his praise of the communist dictatorship as late as 1991 when he and Winnie were in Cuba to celebrate the communist revolution with Fidel Castro. In his speech Mandela said:

"Long live the Cuban Revolution. Long live comrade Fidel Castro... Cuban internationalists have done so much for African independence, freedom, and justice. We admire the sacrifices of the Cuban people in maintaining their independence and sovereignty in the face of a vicious imperialist campaign designed to destroy the advances of the Cuban revolution. We too want to control our destiny... There can be no surrender. It is a case of freedom or death. The Cuban revolution has been a source of inspiration to all freedom-loving people."

In May of 1990 Mandela, visiting America, went on record, referring to Cuba:

There's one thing where that country stands out head and shoulders above the rest. That is in its love for human rights and liberty.

Invictus the movie was a nice bit of fiction. In fact the poem Invictus was not the poem that Mandela gave to the South frican (Springbok) captain Francois Pienaar. The real poem was The Undefeated Man in the Arena.

Plus Capt Pienarr was 6'3" and 240lbs. Played by Matt Damon at 5' 10" and 180 lbs soaking wet did little to add any realism to the film. The rugby action was filmed very badl;y and anyone familiar with rugby at all saw that.

The rest of the film was just way too syrup on the pancakes. A nice film for those under the age of 12.

Just harassing Shekels since he was wanting to pass his typical Hannukah cheer, but since you were asking.....

Jesus was a Jew that told Jews to change their ways.  For that they pinned him to a cross.

The smart ones listened to his teachings and changed the world to make it better place for all (these are now called Christians and some Jews).  The dumb ones stuck with the old idealology and continue to be destructive parasites.

Sometimes they are so destructive that the society they have attached to says 'enough!' and has to purge them from their societies.  Not because they hate all of them but because they cannot tell the good from the bad.

From this, the Jews have built a victimhood mentality.  They feel that since they are always victims, they have to gain money, power and control to protect themselves.  And some of them even use it to rationalize the right to steal and cheat people that they think hate them. Never realizing that it is their actions that turn people against them and not that people inherently hate them.

The lesson that Jews should have learned is what Jesus tried to teach them, one simple golden rule :'do unto others as you would have them do unto you'.  Stop cheating, stealing and corrupting for your own selfish interest and people will not hate you.

Too bad the French can't go back in time and give a big middle finger to the Colonialists and their terroristic intentions against the freedom-loving British. Too bad, indeed.

Obama and the U.S. Congress are securing the main goal of the International Bankers (Rothschild to Rockefeller) in their quest “to form a Monopolistic One World Government, a modern Babylon where everybody is ‘united and equal’ (bankrupt slaves).” --  Elijah777

Thus, Obama opens wider the borders to Communists and Socialists and the U.S. Census Bureau cheerfully reports that whites in once free-enterprise America are becoming a minority and that, according to AFP, “In fact, the Latino, Asian, and multiracial populations are all expected to double in size over the next 40 years. Specifically, Latinos are projected to make up 25.1 percent of the US population in 2044, doubling that of African-Americans. “

Gloating white-culture-hater Kenneth Johnson, senior demographer at the University of New Hampshire’s Carsey School of Public Policy, told Al Jazeera America “The pace of U.S. population growth is slowing, and the population continues to become more diverse, This will produce a rich tapestry of demographic change in the U.S. over the next several decades.”

New Hampshire is a state where “ there were nearly 41,000 more working-age natives not working in the first half of 2014 than in 2000 — a 25 percent increase…with 71 percent of its job growth going to foreign-born workers, including legal and illegal immigrants.

Sens. Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.) and Kelly Ayotte (R-N.H.) both voted for the ‘Gang of Eight’ immigration bill,

There was one stunningly stupid comment in Obama's speach.

One of the guys involved in the 'prisoner swap' was in jail in Cuba for 'setting up open internet access'.

Obama claimed in his speach, that his new policy would 'allow open internet access' in Cuba.

I wonder if TOTUS was aware of this tiny bit of confusion?

I also wonder HOW Obama plans to IGNORE the law regarding US trade with Cuba. While he can explain how he will direct the treasury to have US banks open up in Cuba, those banks are tied to the Fed and the Fed will not OPENLY break the law.

That's one way of minimizing the risk that Russia will put 'missile defense' systems on Cuban territory.

It also potentially opens up Guatanamo as a tourist site, viewable from Cuban territory. All the 'war on terror' torure supporters will just love to go there to see their boys in action. I can smell the profits now.

Russia: forgive debt, Russia, Cuba have good diplomatic relation, US can't overthrow Russia with the currency crisis, can't stand good Cuba-Russia relation, then sneaky USA seduce Cuban regime to avoid Russian stationing troops and military hardware.

USA foreign policy: switching from enemy number one status to the close friend status just for her own interest. Hope Cuban government don't get bewitched, once USA finished and get what she want, she will throw to the abyss you and Cuban people. Never trust USA.

Absolutely correct.

The US wants to open an embassy in Havana to keep an eye on the Russian and Chinese missiles and to develop a nest of CIA operatives.

Every waitress and busboy in Cuba knows that.

Look for a lot of Ryan Fogle events.

Who is going to reimburse the Americans who had their property siezed by the Communists?  Or do we just forget that as something from a bygone era?

I live about five minutes from the Candadian border.  I can cross to buy cuban cigars whenever I want.  That is such a lame desire.

...and Cuban rum is not as good as Guyana 'Demarerra' Rum .....but Canadians have also enjoyed sunning themselves on Cuban beaches.....

Who will reinburse the crooked US corporations and gangsters who had their property seized?  Why not sue the heirs of the Batista fortune ....thats where the crooked money went and it makes sense thats where they should seek recompense.

The US has been typically stupid, greedy and small minded about little Cuba .....

The timing of this normalization is not accidental imho. This may be just in case if Russia asked Cuba to 'store' their nuke-tipped cruise and/or ballistic missiles. Now, Cuba may have more to lose than to gain (econmically speaking) if they decided to go for that. Normalization with Venezuela next?

Because it has been decoupled from the US economy and it's monetary system, Cuba has been immune from  Wall Street's financial shenanigans which have cost the rest of the planet dearly in hard earned savings. Should Cuba start dealing with the US now, it would be tantamount to having unprotected sex with a crack whore.

It's about fucking time.

Has Castro been any more of a war criminal, or any more of a dictator, than virtally every US president since .... well, let's let it rest at every American president.

Is Castro's government more controlled by criminals than the US government? (Think banks, Monsanto, and the Koch bros).

Have Castro's police been any more repressive than America's police? (Answer only if you're Black.)

Was the Cuban shooting down of those two planes worse than the US droning of wedding parties and schools? How many women and children has Castro killed compared with the US over the years. (Think the My Lai we know about and all the nameless villages we've never heard of).

Was the US torturing prisoners in Guantanamo somehow less evil than Castro torturing prisoners in his own jails?

Fuck all political systems and the elites who manipulate them. "War is a racket" and politics are just a con.

Raoul Castro personally executed Cuban civil officials and employees  after Big brother Fidel came to power. So let me see if I have this right; The US Gubmint will track down and deport to Israel 95 year old men for allot less {when they even have the right man}, but will make deals with communist terrorist? This will accomplish three things: 1. The drug traffickers will have it MUCH easier now, 2. Florida will see a wave of Cuban immiGRUNTS that will make the Muriel boat invasion of 1980 look like a boy scout expedition, 3. Breath new life into the Castro regime, which, before today's action, was on it's last leg. ANYONE WHO CAN'T SEE OBAMA FOR WHAT HE IS {a communist}, IS A FOOL.

Putin's recent visit to Cuba and Latin America has got Washington worried...
US has got small country regime change down pat by now...
(latest are Libya, Iraq, Ukraine --no need to list the many dozens more more..particularly in Latin America, it's a piece of cake)...
Fidel is getting too old now to put up decent resistance, so Obama/CIA have figured it is about time to get their foot in the door, "arrange" a regime change, drag in Madelaine Albright and Victoria Nuland and install a puppet government.

Agree  - pity Cuba is so run down they can't tell USA Govt to go Fuck itself !  ALL the USA GOVT wants is to rape & plunder another Country -this time closer to home.

I'm totally pissed  - had Cuba on my MUST visit list - unlike America where I will never travel to as long as my a$$ points to the ground. Shame really - 20 years ago I  wanted to go there (USA) - since then never fucking never !

Also a shame that Putin hasn't done a deal with Cuba to station Russian IBMs there  - it would have been hilarious to hear the bleating & screaming. OK for Yanks to do it to Russia but not other way around. Ha Ha
