America's Most (And Least) Obese Jobs
As employers shift to more proactive efforts to help their workforces "put the Twinkie down," we thought a look at the most (and least) obese jobs in America would provide additional data on potential career paths for today's disenfranchised youth. What The Wall Street Journal found in their data is perhaps surprising with 'sedentary' scientists and economists are the least obese, and 'active' firefighters and cops are the most obese...
So government workers are "fat and happy"? And economists not only run the world but are less obese as a group than athletes!?

Nice to know I fall under the least obese....Artist, Homeless, Alaska Fisherman.
Homeless fish-eating, tinfoil-hat-wearing does that to an old geezer like me.

The clinton era must have been a boom time.
I'm obese and
I can still pick up pennies
Gold Bitchez
So cops really are fat bastards.
I noticed the lumped athletes with a bunch of useless non-producers to brings their numbers now.
But, in slight defense, they included "security guards" in w/police & fire. Now those guys really are the fat Tackleberry rejects. I can tell you around SF/Oakland, I don't see many even chubby cops. And the firefighters are all muy caliente...
"The Wall Street Journal found in their data is perhaps surprising with 'sedentary' scientists and economists are the least obese, and 'active' firefighters and cops are the most obese..."
Someone has never seen the recliner showroom that is the inside of a firehouse. Yep.....spurts of activity. And large dudes watching Family Guy the rest of the time.
"Porn actor"?
Link or you're lying!
Hang on, let me google that. I'll get back to you in a... while.

I spent many years as a production engineer designing processes and tools for assmebly line work. This was before robots were common (1980's). I have to admit now when I watch YT videos on manufacturing I see plenty of opportunities for robots to replace workers. I'll also admit that the majority of those jobs are some of the worst way a human can spend their day. Full of monotonous repetitive tasks that kill all creativity. In the old days people were needed for those jobs. Not anymore.
But it does become a question of balance. People need to spend their days productively but 'jobs' may not be coming back. It will be interesting to see how this all unfolds.
Technology and even full automation could be extremely beneficial for humanity. Unfortunately, I'm afraid that an elite controls the means of production having total different plans. It's a matter of how you handle technology, not technology itself. Here's a nightmare scenario:
http://failedevolution.blogspot.gr/2014/08/the-dominant-elite-ready-to-b...
Intelligent persons understood how 'labor' was going to be denigrated and disenfranchised by technocrats and neo/crony-captialism before movies had color: see 'Metropolis'
The will always need proles to buy the shit they make.
And right now, the proles only have EBT's to buy said shit.
The current economic model is unsustainable, on almost any level you look.
There is a huge potential of consumers due to unprecedented human population. Once wages will further rise in China-South East Asia, there will be plenty of consumers to buy more products. However, I'm afraid that this is also only a transition phase. It's not a matter of money, they can print as much as they want. It's a matter of power and control. Once the elites reach the point to control all the resources and the means of production, the model will change from capitalism to global feudalism.
Agreed. Spent many years doing automation and controls and saw many low skill, low wage jobs disappear; however, opportunities unfolded for those willing to embrace the technology. Rewarding jobs of programming and repairing these systems will always be around. Can't get around the basic laws of thermodynamics.......shit breaks all the time. And if you are one who enjoys solving problems, are handy with tools, and don't mind a little grease under the fingernails at the end of the day there are lots of posibilities.
what about professional gubment assistance grabbers?
yes, lets guess the weight of american welfare family. me first.. momma 280.. daddy 320... sonny (12 yrs Old) 260... sissy (10 yrs old) 215
Don't forget about Sissy's new born baby and does daddy live in the house?
Don't need no baby-daddy, we got Gubmint.
Don't forget the dog.
A pitbull at 175 lbs. from eating all the food that falls on the floor.
Cheap food is the most fattening. A diet high in quality fats and proteins (expensive food) is uniquely satiating and non fattening. That's the diet evolution designed us for. Not eating rafts of grass seeds, vegetable fats from grass seeds, nor of course simple sugars year round.
Bacon!!!!
If uncured and nitrITe free. And somewhat naturally fed. Then hell yes.
Yeah, that chart is totally missing a huge sector of the population. I'd like to see food stamp recipients plotted against non-recipients.
This vending machine will not serve you if you are on a diet.

When I did landscaping I didn't have an ounce of fat on me and had Women all over me.
Ah...the good 'ole days...too bad the pay was abysmal because I enjoyed it.
There is something to be said about the pleasure of mindlessly cutting grass day to day. It really is quite relaxing.
You only want a garden as big as the wife can manage
Same can be said for many jobs on the farm. Cutting corn stalks in the fall, baling hay and stalks, field work...yeah the days get long but it's still satisfying and I don't see robots taking over those types of jobs anytime soon. Sure, we have GPS so the only turning you do is on the end rows(for the most part) but there are many things no robot will anticipate. Shit breaks down.
I sadly sat and watched as five big John Deeres cris-crossed the field in front of my house working up the land I used to farm. With the high speed tillage they do here there is lots of bucking and implement raising and lowering. With both of my rotator cuffs torn out and carpel tunnel in both hands tractor driving is misery. It was great fun when I was young but now a half hour on my riding lawn mower is too much.
In high school, back in the 70's, we used to sign our yearbooks with "don't cut grass this summer, smoke it".
same here man. the only prob with that job was the pay and the amount of sunburns i would get. best times of my life tho. worked a college campus. broads everywhere
I worked in small crew rural house construction in the summers while going to school and for some few years after. I hear ya.
"Economists"??? ~ Is that actually a job??? No wonder the BLS statistics are all fucked up!
...& on that note, How much does a PROPAGANDIST earn?
2 Economists have jobs. The other 98 are still studying and therefore starving. It skews the stats.
Economists 'GIVE' [blow] jobs... There ~ fixed it
Speaking of skewing the stats -- take the firefighters out of the first category and see what happens to the numbers!
I'm guessing [not ironically] that they get burnt to a crisp.
Let's ask FIREMAN BILL BURNS
Don't forget - the figures reported by the Economists were seasonally adjusted. They probably used the "substitution method" too. What do you expect from those who "calculate" the CPI?
Propagandist salary
Since 2001, the president has earned a $400,000 annual salary, along with a $50,000 annual expense account, a $100,000 nontaxable travel account, and $19,000 for entertainment. The most recent raise in salary was approved by Congress and President Bill Clinton in 1999 and went into effect in 2001.
"And economists not only run the world but are less obese as a group than athletes!?"
Coming up with new lies every day is hard work.
uhhh most nurses i know are fat. pot lucks at the nurses station 24-7 365
Just at a Nursing School graduation 'pinning' ceremony last night.
Half of the graduates were overweight. Women generally much heavier than the men.
One quarter of the female were outrageously obese.
pinning ceremony... damn you gave me flashbacks. ptsd
I grew up in the Arctic and there is a large % of the population that never develops healthy habits. Their forefathers hunted and trapped and fished, and were in great shape (and health). The young generation eats KFC and frozen Ready to Eat meals, and they are land-whales... And have no tradition of hunting, trapping or fishing...
They believe the American Heart Association and Diabetes Association provide solid gold advice as to how to not need expensive medical treatment by the member doctors and businesses who benefit from the current advice.
They might also trust the USDA recommendation to cut back radically on fats and eat plenty of whole grains.
You sure it isn't the free catered lunches provides by the drug pushers, excuse me pharma reps.
Trouble with athletes is what happens after they stop "athleting".
I'm no athlete but I put on 10kgs within a year of changing jobs. Guess which job was more physically demanding?
Not one to typically defend Coppers but they got lumped in with security guards....which is an 8 hour shift of sitting.
Oddly enough, not so jolly.
So it turns out calling them fat fucking pigs was more accurate than we thought
Walter Winchell owns the franchise on this.
What's the BMI of the various Tylers? Just curious.
Pretty sure it's not the same as Brad Pitt's or Ed Norton's in Fight Club. :-)
p.s. Wine helps you stay slim, if used in place of other forms of alcohol. Look at the French, Swiss and northern Italians. And it helps the Calorie count if you don't drink it all. Spill some wine, to honor Bacchus (wine) and Aphrodite (libido). ;-)
Yeah my honoring of Aphrodite with alcohol is what helped concieve my daughter (little angle).
She's a-cute not obtuse, right?
Tee hee... :)
I'm assuming this is done via BMI which is a shitty measure. Then yes, economists are going to be 'less obese' than Mike Trout or the typical stout prole police officer or firefighter.
If you do it bf% then this list is diferrenet for sure.
If you put the same scientists and economists on the same dianabol as the cops and firefighters the numbers would come back in line...
You are correct. BMI is very misleading and not very helpful.
Yes, people with lots of muscle mass (bodybuilders, probably firefighters and cops) are considered "obese" by measuring BMI.
I thought this was all fixed when they stopped making Twinkies.
Twinkies are still around... They occupy the White House & the mayor's mansion in Chicago...
Apparently, some clever scientists figured out a way to REVERSE the caloric outcome...
Hmm...
I do not see Politicians, Bankers, Lobbyists, Insurance Salesmen, Public School Teachers, or Government Bureaucrats anywhere on this list. We all know that cops are donut sucking pigs and firefighters are fat-asses that are usually parked in the fire-house cooking chili and ribs; but, where are the real fat-cats and .GOV leeches graded?
It would also be interesting to see a breakdown by .GOV transfer payments/assistance: whether people who recieve, or who receive more from .GOV/Other People, are obese in higher or lower numbers than those who do not receive transfer payments/assistance.
Note on 'economists': they are probably just as full of worthless fat deposits as cops and bureaucrats; -it's just that the fat is all tightly packed into their craniums instead of hanging over thier belts...
Further thoghts:
I attended a Nursing School graduation 'pinning' ceremony last night.
Mind you: this pinning ceremony took place at a well regarded (?) institution in the BRONX/NYC...
Half of the graduates were overweight. Women generally much heavier than the men.
One quarter of the female graduates were outrageously obese.
-At least in this demographic setting it would seem rather obvious that there is some kind of relationship/correlation between higher meletonin levels and obesity of which it is taboo to speak...
Downvote all you like.
The FACT IS that obesity is a growning problem, and these Nursing School graduates: the very people that are going to be administering health care to the public, are just -if not more- unhealthy than the general populace.
Being unhappy about FACTS will not alter those FACTS.
Get over it OR try do something constructive about the problem.
Its alright, they will be strictly limited to administering 'sick care'. Health is not important in our society. Sickness, and treatment, continuous on-going treatment, pays.
Keynesians will love to see all this growth. We have only so many windows to break. Not enough to pay off all this debt even if we break them all every quarter from here on out.
Its alright, they will be strictly limited to administering 'sick care'. Health is not important in our society. Sickness, and treatment, continuous on-going treatment, pays.
I've had several elderly relatives who required hospitalization in the last 2 years. It's only my observations at one particular hospital, but well over half the nurses were obese (and did not see one single male nurse). The melatonin skin level made no difference. Obesity is an equal opportunity addiction.
Low vitamin D in blood syrum correlates with just about every chronic disease, not just obesity. Darker skinned people produce less active D from a given exposure to Sun (UV)
While I 100% agree with the Vitamin D comment, the truth is that it is lack of magnesium/incorrect calcium vs magnesium ratios, that most contribute to disease.
Our modern chemical farming has nearly depleted our food of magnesium. Our prescriptions, over the counter meds, and skin treatments finish it off.
I can get 50,000 ius of D by spending 20 minutes in the sun, easily fixed.
Magnesium doesn't work so easily.
NOBODY, especially our "health" industry, is looking into this.
400-800 mg of mag daily has literally CHANGED my life. I cannot tell you how many health "issues" that docs were worthless for (but they had pills for the symptoms, never the cause) that are now gone. Just, simply, beautifully, gone.
When I added magnesium chloride oil applied topically and daily, it didn't take long for me to realize I felt better than I have ever felt in my adult life.
25 cents a day could change your life. Try it for a month, then go off it. If you are like most, you'll be back. Mag rocks.
Yep, a lot of diseases start off with dehydration and magnesium deficiencies. Check out Dr Carolyn Dean on this.
A lot of diseases start off with a 3000cal/day diet, followed by the Diabeatus.
This firefighter would not even piss on you if your cunt was on fire.
The only ( volunteer ) fireman I know has been saying that he 'needs to lose about 50lbs' for about 20 years.
I hear a lot of anecdotal whatever about what happens at the firehouse and firefighters in general.
According to my source: weight problems are a matter of oven discussion amongst firefighters in his jurisdiction/firehouse in part because firefighters are more likely to die of heart attack fighting a blaze and it is perfectly well understood that being over-weight is a contributing factor to heart disease.
On the matter of "This firefighter would not even piss on you if your cunt was on fire. "
You aren't a hero nor a true public servant: you are just another asshole at the statist trough.
I wonder if you can even look down and see your own short little dick without sucking in or moving that belly-tire out of the way...
Unless you are a Volunteer -WE pay your wages. How we feel about your personal hygene and comportment should have nothing to do about whether you care to do the job WE pay you to do or not. It is in the public interest that public employees not be unhealthy, letharic or just douche-bags.
Further: 'Volunteers' that decide on a personal basis whether or not to act are amoral douches.
Go fuck your fat-assed selfish self and go find an occupation that cmports with your political and personal douchbaggery.
Teachers are government leaches, eh? How do they compare next to the entire profession of banking and finance, besides that they get paid way less. Do you want workers for your companies that can't read?
If you have a problem with the education system, then that's a different matter (I do too...) but for the hours they work, teachers earn the money they make.
In Illinois, they work 9 months a year and make an average salary of $66,000. The average salary for the Chicago suburbs is $71,000. On top of that, they can retire at 55 with a pension that averages the last 4 years they worked. And don't forget the gold-plated insurance they have. Private sector jobs don't pay anywhere near this. Overpaid and completely unsustainable.
Thanks but my parents taught me how to read.
Teaching is a fine profession. Problem is there is no mechanism in the current set up to deal with THE ENORMOUS FAILURE OF THE EDUCATION SYSTEM.
And the teachers and their unions are part of that problem. In every other part of the real world one either gets the job done or is replaced. I can make a pretty good argument that teachers are a part of the system of American education that is not egtting the job done.
Wall St: Fat Cats
The economists are eating iphones.
What would ZH be without their daily obesity article?
What would (America, the world) be without the daily costs of obesity?
Where did they get these numbers? Al Gore?
Al's looking pretty puffy himself. Just sayin'.
Economists did't get their own line item or it would have shown them to all be fat. Economists are not scientist.
You can look at it as a bar of intelligence. Why think when you can eat and follow orders.
Closer to livestock then people. Those in protected industries are fat and happy those who are not are thin enough to fight.
Called fighting trim, survival instinct. Not quit IQ but close enough for show.
Titanic human beings attribute their girth to a thyroid or metabolism problem when actually it's a simple math problem - any calories taken in OVER your basal metabolism rate + daily activity calories expended - throws you into the fatass bin....
This only works if you are moving at the historical minimum (we left that back in the 80s) AND eating pure, unadulterated, food created by the earth.
Once you start eating neurotoxins and excitotoxins and frankenfoods, all caloric comparison are off.
Not to mention your metabolic rate which varies GREATLY between us.
My hub can down 1000s of calories of liquor (with Cola) and fake food every day and barely pack on a pound, and he is in his 50s.
I can look at a sub and gain weight sometimes.
Eating clean, getting rid of most modern foods, and making sure I am physical for a minimum of 10 minutes a day allowed me to drop 25 pounds in about 6 months. Never once did I count calories or work out like a fiend.
The "truths" about the way our bodies work are mainly corporate-created, predetermined, "research" that supports the rich guy getting richer and you returning to their herd.
If what they told us actually worked then the legions of fat medical industry employees would not exist.
I'm guessing that there is an IQ correlation.
Put the cocoa down!

Artists and athletes in the same category. Ya gotta love it. More mush for the masses. And I see the WSJ managed to sneak themselves in with LeBron James.
So what? Obesity does not necessarily indicate anything other than weight storage.
Some obese people are metabolically "normal" and some skinny people are metobollically unhealthy.
It's not as clear as the internet makes it.
http://www.health.harvard.edu/blog/overweight-and-healthy-the-concept-of...
Yeah, but the end of the article says:
Metabolically healthy obesity isn’t common. And it may not be permanent, warns Dr. Hu. Just because a person has metabolically healthy obesity at one point doesn’t it will stay that way. With aging, a slowdown in exercise, or other changes, metabolically healthy obesity can morph into its harmful counterpart.
It’s also important to keep in mind that obesity can harm more than just metabolism. Excess weight can damage knee and hip joints, lead to sleep apnea and respiratory problems, and contributes to the development of several cancers.
In obese people, sleep apnea and respiratory problems are caused by masses of fat compressing the lungs, diaphragm, and windpipe, making breathing difficult.
and i'm still not rich because i'm genetically programed with lower motivation.
"If you're poor at 35, you deserve it." --Jack Ma
Nurses in hospitals are amazingly fat, I agree; but firefighters? No way.
Gives new meaning to dough boys.
IT workers in Silicon Valley in average are underweight.
Shenanigans. Where are the Wal-Mart shoppers? For some folks, that's a full time job!
How do you link Scientists and Economists? Or is this just that statistics lie and liars use statistics?
i love how reporters are lumped into the least important jobs.
Science bitchez!!
BMI is a bogus measure of obesity.
Muscle is 5 times more dense than fat so you can get someone who has a high BMI but looks and is both strong and fit.
i.e. The WSJ should stick to their core competence of sucking banker cock.
"Do you know how to catch treasonous pigs'" The professor thought it was a joke and asked for the punch line.
The young man said this was no joke. "You catch treasonous pigs by finding a suitable place in the community and then providing free donuts. The treasonous pigs like the idea and begin to come everyday to eat the free donuts. When they are used to coming every day, you pander to their egos, and put them at ease. As they get used to the soothing pandering, they eat even more donuts.
You continue to pander to their egos until you have them completely swayed, unfit, and within your grasp. Now you put conditions on the donuts, a gate, and you have captured the whole treasonous, and unfit heard."

The banksters need to repay us.
hmm i call BS,,,no striper or high priced escort listed in the lowest
Sexual athletes. Low BMI.
Did it occur to anyone-especially all those who commented on the "groups"-that the data might very have been compiled by profession and then grouped by score in order to produce the graphic?
No, you didn't. Oh, uh right. It's statistics people. Grouping random professions together and getting a total or score would be pointless.
So in other words for those of you who went to public schools: the fat or not fat artists did not "bring down" the score of the athletes who, by the way include NFL linemen who are, very commonly, fat. And then there are bowlers. And golfers.
Always glad to see everyone thinking themselves right into the proverbial box.
And in its latest decision the deranged European Court of Human Rights has ruled obesity to be a disability. Which imposes a whole new range of requirements on employers and entitles the 'victims' to all sorts of additional welfare perks.
The Cloward-Piven Strategy envisioned almost everyone on welfare and nobody responsib;e for anything. We're well on the way.
Even without injuries, people that suffer from obesity have drastically reduced mobility. Carrying around a large amount of extra bulk, they are almost always out of breath, unable to bend, put their shoes on, get out of a chair, or walk unaided for more than a few paces.
Climbing stairs is often out of the question for the massively overweight, and obesity on such a scale can also cause breathing problems while sleeping. Obesity occurs over a period of time, is hard to combat, the bottom line, it detracts from the quality of life and there is no fun in being truly fat.
I'm not particularly interested in saving the obese from themselves but I'm very concerned about the costs that the obese impose on others through higher health insurance rates, and for the taxpayers who pay for Medicaid, Medicare, and social security disability benefits. More on the cost of this growing problem in the article below.
http://brucewilds.blogspot.com/2012/06/obesity-huge-problem-for-america....
Some folks are obese.
