Many Germans after the war - claimed they knew nothing of the concentration camps, even though recent research indicates there were over 46,000 camps of various kinds, large and small, throughout Germany and adjacent countries. To put this number in perspective, we only have a bit over 14,000 McDonalds in the US today - so they had 3x as many concentration camps as we have McDonald's today, yet many Germans "did not know they existed".
