Second Passport Lessons From Steve Wozniak And Albert Einstein

In January 1933 Albert Einstein was visiting the US under a research grant from Princeton University.
Meanwhile back home in Germany Adolf Hitler had just become elected chancellor and started creating an atmosphere hostile for Jews, intellectuals and pacifists, of which Einstein was three times guilty.
Recognizing the danger of continuing to hold a German passport, Einstein traveled to Belgium where he renounced his German citizenship.
By that time the Nazis had raided his cottage, confiscated his property and seized his bank accounts.
Einstein was heartbroken to see his homeland overrun by fascists, but he didn’t waste any time looking back.
As a renowned scientist he was highly sought out for university postings and speaking engagements all over the world.
After spending time in a few countries in Europe he eventually got permanent residency in the US in 1935 and became a citizen in 1940.
Having been a Swiss citizen as well since 1901, Einstein didn’t really need to get another passport from the US, but judged that the country would be a better place for him to work and grow, so he wanted to become part of his new society as much as possible.

If this same scenario played out today, it’s likely Einstein would have looked for a different country to call home.
We don’t have to speculate on this matter, we can just ask Steve Wozniak what he’s doing.
The co-founder of Apple obtained permanent residency in Australia where he intends to relocate full-time and eventually become a citizen.
Woz’s whole family is planning to spend most of their time in Australia, with his son already settled there.
If a quick-fix was his aim, someone of Woz’ wealth could have easily gotten a second passport through one of the economic citizenship programs in a places like St. Kitts and Nevis, Dominica or Antigua and Barbuda.
Instead Woz has chosen to do things the old fashioned and safer way—by first becoming a resident, relocating to the country and integrating into society.
In his words: “I want to be a distinguished part of this country and some day I may say I lived and died an Australian, and that would be a really nice thing to be able to say.”
Doing it this way will take at least 4 years, and Woz will be close to 70 before he’s eligible to become an Australian citizen.
It would have been easy for him to stay at home and enjoy his retirement in a familiar place.
Instead he chose to seek out a new country that is more in line with his values.
There’s always going to be a tradeoff when moving abroad, but you get to choose a place that has more of what you want and less of what you don’t.

Every time I see one of these articles, I think back to him and Doug Casey talking about how great it is in Argentina, and how much opportunity there is for investment down there. How'd that work out ? There is no real safe place. Period.

Every square foot of land on the planet is claimed by a country. Just look at China and Japan squabbling over those shitty little islands that are little more than rocks jutting out of the sea. Simon apparently has the bucks to be hedging and living the way he advises. I think his advice is meant for people like him who can play by a different set of rules. If you need a 9 to 5 you are stuck and his advice sounds some kind of voodoo.
His general concept seems to be that you need to diversify your risk exposure by thinking not just stawks, bonds, and precious but also geopolitically both financially and personally. That makes a lot of sense but only if you really are already wealthy.
Basically, he's giving advice to rich people who aren't in "the club".
What Simon really means is that if you can't afford to buy politicians and police in the US then move to a smaller country where the Pols and police are cheaper. If corruption is getting you down where you live then become part of it elsewhere and live the good life.

A British comedian fabulously compared the Australian economy as a skier being pulled behind a powerful boat, waving and grinning maniacally to the crowd as the boat zoomed past. China, of course, being the powerful boat. What he didn't point out though is that the boats engine was on fire and the river was full of pirhanas.

Um...uh...the biggest industry is tourism...and the biggest export is coal, mostly to India. Tourism booms when the AUD is low, mining booms when the AUD is high, it's The Lucky Country. Did I mention I get 5 weeks vacation, live on a pristine beach, and send my kids to a world-class university for $1500 per year? And did I mention that if I go to Hong Kong to work for a year or two, I only pay 15% Hong Kong local taxes? I don't even have to file back in Australia. Did I mention that they just killed a provision to charge a $7 co-pay for healthcare? The people were outraged.
Not perfect but pretty friggin' good. Handing back my US passport in 2005 after Bush got reappointed was the best decision I ever made.
The U.S has a lot of fucked up issues, but there are still some pretty good places and you can maintain a pretty decent arsenal.... for now anyway. Most other places you go are hostile to private gun ownership, especially Australia. I'd rather fight in my native land where I know my neighbors than be a stranger when shit does hit the fan. If I were to liquidate and move to a liberal, statist, non-gun country, I would pick the South Island of New Zealand.

EXACTLY correct and my own personal conclusion after exploring more than 200 countries looking for a better place to live.
The only ways to escape the continuously increasing government shit are:
1. Die
2. Travel to another planet
3. Travel back in time to a much earlier era
I took my son to Australia a few years ago and had a great time but it is very dry for one, and when we drove a rented car a cop stepped into the road for no reason other than stop my car, check my license and he has me speak into a breathalyzer. Aussies seem to live an oppressive police state but I think US cops are more psychopathic. The women in Australia were very ugly. If I were an Aussie young man I'd want out.
Back in the day, I traveled many many places. Over 50 countries and more than a million frequent flier miles. This was all WAAAAAY before 9/11 and all the TSA BS (which I only mention to provide 'context' for behavior in an an era that was, for all intents & purposes, arguably LESS 'police statey' than things generally tend to be today).
Nowhere. & I mean NOWHERE did I ever get hassled as much as trying to enter Australia. It really surprised the hell out of me. I can't imagine what it must be like now.
Other than that, 2 weeks 'down under' was nothing to write home about. (I was working, speaking at a conference). A bunch of snooty people, but some nice ones. I got paid & left. I've never even thought about going back. It's a nothingburger.

I can attest to this. Just today I was pulled over *twice* in Melbourne, Victoria to be breath tested for alcohol and drugs. When I said to the policeman this was the second time I'd been stopped and I neither drink nor take drugs, he thought I was having a go at him. I then had my licence checked, car checked to make sure it was road-worthy, and reluctantly was waved on as they couldn't find even the tiniest thing to fine me for. Sure Australia is a police state, but I guess in the US I'd be shot dead by now. Woz is moving to Tasmania, which is kind of like moving to Maine - except even slower and an island, 200 miles from the mainland. The Aussie women aren't all ugly, although most are pretty anti-men and have a superiority complex.
Re police: every year the police do a big crackdown on drink drivers around Christmas and New Year. It's not an oppression. They don't search your cars. If you're not drink driving you have no problems.

Anecdotally Australia seems infested with one world government apologists. These people are generally Labor voters and socialists. For the life of me I don't know what goes on inside these peoples brains. The two I have spoken to recently are highly educated but just fucked up with a "take from the rich and give to the poor" (at all costs) mentality. You really can't help stupid, even when they are highly educated and still nstupid. Our gun laws aren't as bad as people might think. I have just applied for a long arm license. In fact I'd say the process is quite reasonable and would go a long way to keep guns out of the hands of mentally unstable people, the only people other thasn crooks you don't really want owning a gun. All I had to do was attend a 2 hour safe handling course, sit a small exam, join a gun club, submit the papers and bingo, gun license. Getting a pistol license is slightly more complex requring a 2 day safe handling course - but hey, who can complain about being taught to use guns safely.
Remember, "educated" does not mean smart. Smart means intelligent. "Educated", however, means "trained". There are millions of "educated" imbeciles. There are very few Intelligent people. The educated Imbeciles sit in front of the iGadget and get Re-educated daily.
The "educated" are big fans of redistribution. They believe that everyone should have everything they want for free. Their re-education has taught them that nothing is earned, only deserved. A case in point: Healthcare. In america, our healthcare is now a government RIGHT. Everyone gets it. Regardless of whether they purchased it or not. There is no "Cost". It is government sanctioned. Australia is seriously controlled. I have several friends that went over there and came back disgusted. You can't install anything yourself, even if you are capable. They will demolish it! Permits here and there, unions, if you think like an Australian and act like one, you fit in nicely. If not, you will have hell.
The labor unions in Oz are TOTALLY out of control !
I travelled all around the world with 3 large polyethylene cases, visited 12 countries, no problems. BUT in Oz the airline told me that the weight of each case exceeded the limit that the labor union laws allow a baggage handler to lift. The baggage handler in Oz who was complaining was TWICE my size, a huge burly guy, and I had NO problem lifting the cases myself. Instead he could have complained about the weight and asked for a "tip", and I would have been annoyed but would have paid the bribe rather than have to go buy another piece of luggage and repack my original 3 pieces into 4 pieces to get the weight of each piece low enough for the wussies to lift.
Had similar experiences in different situations around Oz. Seemed to me that the labor unions are determined to transform the burly Aussie men into wimpy whining pussies.

I have to admit that this constant seeming reversion to fascism is bloody interesting. I like Nevada and they are Ok with the machine guns and suppressors. The US will be THE place to be post collapse. Lots of good hard working people, rule of law, a newly humbled government, a new fresh currency not overburdened with debt and friends and family many of whom will be counting on those with capital to rebuild the industries lost to the reserve currency experiment. I plan to spend my remaining years living life and enjoying the rebuilding of what used to be and will be again be a great country. Things suck now with a government that does not need citizen support (because it can print the money it used to need to tax to get). These features will change. Who knows, maybe there will even be some justice for those who trashed the Constitution. That part did not have to happen. Even if there is no trial those folks will live their lives out in shame.

Not sure what you're talking about. The US is in the predicament it is precisely due to the thinking and behaviour of the majority. It must, if the majority thought otherwise the US would be a different place. Absoluite greed has pervaded to the levels of even the most average person. I have a good friend in the States who is just frothing at the mouth with making money. He's nothing out of the ordinary, just a small time property developer who'd mow down the last acre of the Amazon if he could make a buck. It's striking how effected he has become starting with the subprime housing boom. This is the time he became obsessed with making money, as he watched his friend and colleagues become rich.

Loved NZ, Australia nice but no New Zealand. But then I prefer peace and quiet over the hustle and bustle of a large city. Auckland more my speed than Sydney. Recent political developments in Australia seem to signal that they are intent on playing "keeping up with the Joneses" in the police state arena. One big problem regarding this behavior, with respect to Europe at least, is that you probably see a lot of visitors from the Northeast coastal areas of the US (the richer ones who have the money to take time off). States like New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, because it's much easier and cheaper to get direct flights from there. People from the big cities in these states tend to be loud, pushy, and egotistical. Meet someone from Indiana, Tennessee, or Kansas, and you'll get a very different impression. I know this from sad experience. I'm from a "Flyover state," and when I went to College in my own state, I heard out of state students from the Northeast asking why we talked so funny.
Of course, one should not generalize. One mistake that Europeans make it to assume that all Americans are the same, whichever part of the US they are from. There is a difference. I general I get along with most of them though.
Now Europeans of course also have their issues when it comes to likableness.

As an Australian I can truly say that Mr Wozniak has made a very wise choice indeed. Sure, we're only 23million people and nobody on the political stage respects our opinions. But one good thing, apart from having lots of space, is we're a long way from the troubles of the world, most of which are in the northern hemisphere. Other celebrities that seemed to have made the move include one of the Madden brothers, Red Foo, Ben Elton(married to an Aussie), Arj Barker(also married to an Aussie), and Leo Sayer who has been here a long time. They have all seen the light.

I explored both OZ and NZ extensively since they are English-speaking. Both are near the top of the list of better countries to live in, of course a rating depends upon what you are looking to get and avoid/escape. Seems to be a substantial number of peasants on ZH who have earned nothing, own nothing and would be happy with just a thatched roof, a full bong, and extensive entitlement programs, but for successful people, a country needs to offer a long list of positives, including great infrastructure and healthcare, and a short list of negatives, eg socialist parasites.
Both Oz and NZ are further along in socialist rot than USA, although the parasites in USA under obola et all have stepped on the accelerator to full coercive collectivism and may well pass both OZ and NZ in the next few decades.
OZ is HUGE, BUT the vast majority of it is serious desert - I know because I drove BOTH around it, AND across it. However the large size means that there is opportunity to find small communities with high-quality of life and a minimum of the human shit that accompanies large urban areas. I found most of the Aussies to be very enjoyable., similar to Americans in the far west USA.
NZ is as close a copy of UK as you can get in terms of land use, people, culture, etc. Also very nice people, but much more like Victoria, BC, Canada. Also very easy to find small communities with high-quality of life and a minimum of the human shit that accompanies large urban areas. The South Island is much less developed, has spectacular mountains, and is like the Canadian Rockies and adjoining prairie provinces.
When I made my decision where to settle, both OZ and NZ were at the top of my list, but that was in 2000, when USA was still much less socialist police state than now. Given the clear acceleration in the USA towards homogenized shit society, militarized brutal police state, exploding racial conflict, unlimited invasion by over-bred entitlement-sucking latin peasants, all-consuming government, etc, if I were making the decision today, I would definitely choose Oz or NZ over USA, probably NZ because it is much more removed and less involved in the international shit and a more homogeneous society. I settled in the USA and Europe (unspecified country). BUT as soon as I could see the crisis coming in Europe, I sold out of all my European assets while the Euro was still worth $1.50USD.
Canada is also a good choice except for the brutally cold winters, so if you don't want to endure those winters, then you need to have a winter home in a southern latitude. There are many Canadians wintering in the Caribbean. Oz & NZ have very much more mild winters than Canada, since the most populated areas of Oz are very close to the ocean, and Oz is so big north to south that you can drive north and south with the seasons and stay comfortable outdoors all year long, and NZ islands are completely surrounded by ocean.
Canada is also well-advanced in socialist rot, especially the healthcare system. If you know anything about human anatomy, physiology, and medicine, so that you can play an active role in your navigation of the healthcare system, then USA is still by far the best healthcare system in the world - you can still get the diagnostic tests and treatments that you want on demand, while in all other countries you will be just a cog in a huge government machine.
I am seriously re-evaluating the USA. If the Hillary bitch gets into the White House, then she and her followers will push the USA much further into socialist coercive collectivist shit, including completing the destruction of the healthcare system, and I will be packing up for NZ, if all other countries remain on current course.
