Premature Extrapolation: Did The Santa Claus Rally Come Too Soon?

Tyler Durden's picture

Even CNBC has grown apathetic at the all-time-higherest moves in stocks...

Another day, another rally, another BTFD in Biotechs (why? because they are down, durr), and another record-er-est high in stocks... This is the strongest 6-day rally since July 2010

Did The Santa Claus Rally Already Happen?

But it ended ugly... with the S&P red!!

Stocks rolled over after the 7Y Auction surprised with its resilience amid low liquidity...

As Biotechs bounced...

Algos got confused at the esrly close in Europe... and took a while to catch on to how strong the auction was...

Russell 2000 hitting new highs as HY and HYG are not...

But healthcare (which includes Biotechs) is the laggard along with Energy so far this week as Utes lead the way...

Treasuries rallied back late today to unchanged after early weakness (chatter of rate lock hedges ahead of exuberance-based HY issuance coming next week sent rates up)... following today's auction

And then there's this...

The USD slipped lower on the day...

Crude slipped back below $56 - down 3% on the day...

Despite USD weakness, commodities slipped lower in general...

Indeed, describing these times with ordinary sequences of words is like drinking non-alcoholic beer - there's a kick missing. ;-)

BTW I heard that Sploogle is opening a new campus in Hyderabad. That can only mean one thing - shitloads of Hyderabadian families w/ both young parents working and junior being sent off to pre/post/fuckyou-skool, and late nights for Bay Arean Sploogle employees driving the "offshore teams."

Three queers for our globalist overlords.

As expected by all, except 'americans', exporting 'freedom' resulted in the depletion of that resource in the Pindostan homeland.

Those citizens who questioned,
those suspect harborers of doubt,
were brought before a panel

They were tested and encephalographed

when, in accordance with the laws,
they reprocessed their brains.

If limitless debt is now possible, if earnings do NOT matter with the Fed pledged to do “whatever it takes” to support markets.  If this really is a sustainable ‘New Normal’, it could go on for years. Every crisis is met with more Fed intervention.  More QE, more jawboning, more of everything. They expand their balance sheet and all is good. Jobs are created as people and government pile into limitless debt. If the banks are threatened, they are bailed out.  I have not seen one argument why limitless money creation is not possible. No inflation, people are thrilled with their new SUVs and 401K’s. The wealthy cannot believe the billions of $$ the Fed has handed to them, and pledged even more to come. The little people have jobs building their new yachts and toys.

Why would anyone sell stocks? Lousy earnings, just means more buybacks, and more intervention to support prices. One would have to be crazy to sell, knowing the Fed has their backs. The Fed models of human behavior are perfect so far. How and why will it all fall apart?

My guess is that earnings will tank at some point, and it will be a wake-up call about this Ponzi. You see, the more P/E expands, the more stocks become mere paper tickets with a (ever growing) price tag printed on them, completely disconnected from whatever underlying business they were originally supposed to represent. That underlying business no longer matters, and so people could as well be trading any paper contract instead. Now, extrapolating this to a complete insanity, the FED could certainly start buying those paper tickets (to support “price stability”), thus basically distributing newly printed money directly into the hands of paper ticket holders.

… My concern with participating in this is the same concern about participating in any other Ponzi. One never knowns when it ends (unless one is close to the originator, that is, to the FED). And when it does end then there is nothing to support ticket prices until they fall low enough to re-couple with the underlying business they used to represent.

I admit the show is certainly fascinating to watch though. Who could have imagined that Ponzi would one day be used to sustain (if only for another day) the economy for like half of the world?

The limit is inflation. Of course there has been inflation. It's just been gobbled up by massive deflationary forces and deleveraging, that and inflation figures are being fudged even more. QE generates inflation because banks and other entities recieve money for US government bonds and mortgage backed securities. That money is immediately invested in other assets creating rising prices and inflation.

The question is how long can inflation fudging continue and how long until the inflation figures are no longer believed? Until we come to those barriers then limitless debt will endure. Also is the shadow banking sector still shrinking and causing money to vanish? A shrinking shadow banking sector is rumoured to be the reason for these massive deflationary forces.

Mathematically speaking, one cannot vanquish inflation no matter how a CB prints money or buys assets. Global hyperinflation is the endgame for this new normal.

At some point people will begin to doubt the validity of these price increases, there is already a lot of unease about this "rally".

The Feds models of human behavior are far from perfect, they are myopic. They can make educated guesses at what folks may do today, or tomorrow. But they fail to see the bigger picture, they ignore the signs that should be warning them of trouble ahead.

Their ignorance of human behavior will soon become clear as they try desperately to support asset prices in a deflationary spiral. And since deflation is primarily a psychological phenomenon, they will try in vain to correct it by throwing money at it. They will learn that increasing money supply only stimulates spending when people are WILLING or ABLE to spend. Flooding your economy with money no one wants or needs just makes it seem more worthless as it sits unspent or goes into 'bubble assets' that everyone recognizes as bubble assets because they are so out of whack with everything else in the economy.

Once a currency loses the faith of the people, it never recovers, and the tendency is to resist it more.

We carry on about how stupid people have become and yet in the same breath marvel at our progress. Is it progress or is it profit? Nothing is funded unless it will make a buck and who cares if it poisons our children- we are an adanced civilization. I understand the desire to make a buck or I wouldn't be here on this site everyday. "A man from Lovech Oblast in Bulgaria returned his mortgaged house to the bank in the most novel manner. He spent  his money to demolish his family home. The house was mortgaged and the family was unable to pay the mortgage. The mortgage was on the house but didn’t include the land on which the house was built, so the family decided to demolish the house and return it to the bank, loading the rubble onto a truck which was then brought to the head office of the bank.''
