Belarus President Tells "Retailers, Money-Grabbers And Thieves" That Capital Controls "Will Remain Forever"

Tyler Durden's picture

There is just so much win in the following article describing what is taking place in hyperinflation-ridden Belarus (aka a true Keynesian success story), that we decided to post it in its entirety.

State control of prices in Belarus will remain forever

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has said that state control over prices will remain in place in the republic and urged businesses not to count on a liberalization of the price policy after the scraping of a package of emergency measures from the government and the National Bank.

"I was told, and saw it for myself, that some of our scoundrel-officials have been telling entrepreneurs, businessmen and all sorts of thieves that they should wait until around (January) 9th or 15th, everything will be liberalized here, and they would be able to get what they have not until now. People are simply begging to be you know where. I want to say that the trend, as is fashionable to say nowadays, towards control over domestic prices will remain forever," Lukashenko said at a meeting which focused on the country's economic development on Friday.

It is outrageous that certain politicians have been telling businesses the control over price-formation in the country will soon be lifted and businessmen will be able to make up for lost profits, the president said.

"Retailers, middlemen, money-grabbers and thieves working in this sector have become the richest people in our country," Lukashenko said.

"We did all we could to form a proper retail industry in our country. Even if tomorrow we have no more new retail companies, we still have an incredible number of them and middlemen. We could do without new ones. But those that are operating, we'll make them work the way they should," the president said.

"Like I said, unless they heard already: 2-3% of the profit margin. We'll have each type of goods under control, especially imported ones," Lukashenko said.

"They should not expect to be able to hide something somewhere in the hope that after (January) 9th or 15th they would get incredible prices and fill their pockets even more," the president said.

And just like that, we have government central-planning of... everything. Coming soon to every banana republic near you.

This.  I seriously doubt German artilliery would move east of the Oder.

The Russian Army would be suicidal to approach the Oder with the nod from Berlin ahead of time.

This means that Belarus, Ukraine, Moldova, and Poland are ground zero for any potential war between West and East.  I get the feeling that Poland and Belarus would take the worst of it.

Could be a good buying opportunity for Real Estate in Western Poland (former Prussia) as without a doubt -- there would have to be a buffer zone between the new West and East (anyone who thinks the USSA can take Russia in Russia is fooling themselves) -- and what could be better for the Russians than to Establish good will with the Germans on a mass scale.

E.g., Hey Angie, tell ya what -- with this whole shit show going on right now -- we both know who wins in this part of the world.  How about this, you keep Germany out of the fray -- and in return we'll give you Prussia back.  There are a few conditions:

1) In the reestablished Prussian states of Schlesien, Ober Schlesien, Nord Schlesien und Ost-Preussen absolutely no German military hardware, or any hardware of its allies are allowed in this part of the world for the next 30 years. Moreover, this is a strict no-fly-zone for military aircraft from Germany or her allies again, for the next 30 years..  The Russian army will play by the same rules.  Again, for the next 30 years.

2) This is not an enclave of the current Polish government.  Germany will annex this part of Europe.  It will be a part of Germany.  Not a Polish government in exile.  Not a group of state that "temporarily" belong to Poland, etc., etc., The language will be German, and your government will be responsible for taxes, welfare, streets, laws, etc., etc.,

3) Our energy companies are entitled to any and all of the petrolium and gas related resources in this part of the world.  The mineral rights belong to us, and we are entitled to the spoils of said rights for free.  We will abide be all environmental regulations the BND imposes on the newly annexed land.

If you say no to these conditions, Germany gets Stettin back, and we park the Russian Army less than 100 kms away from Berlin directly on the Oder.

Your head would spin so quickly, as all parties and new sources become pro German Unification 2.0.  Rebuilding this part of the world would tie the German government down financially for the next 20 years, and as long as they keep paying their bills -- Russia could use this opportunity to drive the wedge between German and the US/UK. Bring it into the fold, and really give the shithead Bilderbergers a run for their money.

In a capitalist society you have to be willing to admit your errors and take your losses.

In a Central Bank Controlled society, the only ones expected to bear the losses are the consumers.

I drive a diesel.  Where I am diesel fuel has dropped more than $1 a gallon.  But there are some gas stations that have refused to take their losses and sell their diesel they have in the tank for a loss.  So at some stations, diesel is as low as 2.89. while there are some that are still trying to sell it for $3.89.

It's not moving at those stations, and will not move at that price.  Yet they steadfastly refuse to lower the price.

Even though it would be in their best interest to take their losses and start selling diesel again, they refuse.  And evey day they wait, their losses are mounting.

Belarus could learn a lesson here, but I think they rather prove that they are right, regardless of the costs...

This demonstrates a fundamental misunderstanding of capitalism. The only mistake an owner would ever make - is to react to a situation where a competitor decides to put you out of business by selling below cost.

The absolute WORST thing a capitalist can do: sell MORE...of ANYTHING...that does NOT return both the initial cost, and a profit...which covers the risk of buying diesel before his customers NEED it.

Sitting on that diesel fuel and awaiting the inevitable rise in prices...means you don't have to replace the diesel already in the tank. If someone wants the diesel, they will pay the price the OWNER wants, or they will not. It's the ultimate democratic endevor as his customers either vote to support his decisions, or not! Each time a customer makes a purchase, he's voting to support the owner. The owner can interpret the 'data' (lack of sales) as an omen to lower his price and thereby take a loss, or he can simply wait for his customers to come back around to his refusal to change course once those customers realize they've been duped into misinterpretting a price drop.

In this case, your local convenience store made a correct determination - because the arabs are simply manipulating an already manipulated system. They are selling at a in order to drive prices DOWN - for the sole purpose of weening America away from it's new energy independence....

The Saudi controlled oil cartel is the one that has decided they don't like the fact that America doesn't need them - so they drive the prices down below our costs to produce. They are such rich little fascists that they're betting American's will put pressure on their own neighbors to force the independent competitors to stop 'mucking up' the arab pricing monopoly...

...and just like the last time we showed some backbone, if they can keep their own rabble in line, this type of leverage will eventually work. As you have proven, you'll sacrifice your neighborhood convenience store owner for the sake of a buying it $1.00/gallon cheaper.

...once independent American oil production is 'brought into line' and stops fracking (either as a response to the pressure of the arab's reverse-embargo, or via congressional legislation)...

...what do you suppose the price of diesel (which without US special taxation - is actually CHEAPER to refine than gasoline) will do?

It will necessarily skyrocket.

But don't assume you know what a capitalist is thinking - and that he is foolish for not doing what you've been indoctrinated to expect from him. It's not ALL your fault, afterall, you can't possibly know how capitalism works, you've never been allowed to see it work properly. You see, much like the property YOU own - once an item is paid for - like the diesel in the tank of your local convenience store - do you think they care this artifical pricing will last?

I don't know for sure, but I'd say they can't afford to sell it for less, and believe prices will rise again, soon...and they're willing to put THEIR money where their mouth is.

When you own something, you don't actually HAVE to give it away just because people who use what you have, WANT you too...

You have clearly demonstrated how wrong one can be.

The thing that no one can do is accurately and without fail, forecast demand.

A capitalist prepares for what they think will happen, but when it does not, must adjust accordingly.  When they do not, they pay the price.

So tell me how much profit the station is making by waiting for prices to rise again, and not selling any diesel in the meantime?

You are correct when you say that you do not have to give it away.  You can hold it forever, and never recover your investment.

Meanwhile, their competition has taken their"short term loss" and are back making profits on what they sell.

Why don't you tell me which model is generating the most profit?

After all, that is the bottom line for capitalism, isn't it?

By the way, I do not make my purchasing decisions to support the owner.  And neither do the majority of consumers.  The consumers are voting-for teh best price that they can find.

Fundamental misunderstanding: the BEST thing a Capitalist can do is use capital / easy debt to drive a competitor (with less access and weaker position) out of business.

And the Chinese have done exactly that to entire American industries, since Clinton declared them "Most Favored". Actually, ditto every other sovereign (Saud) or international monetarist controlled nation with sock puppet leaders.
Are the Sauds still buying T-bills, as per SAMA, or has that farce even been abandoned?

BTW, most gas stations sell gas at ~3% average margin - they make their money selling Redbull and doughnuts.

grow up and get a clue, kid.

lukashenko's centrally (mis)managed economic policies have been destroying the country and causing his people tremendous suffering.

to say that he "has the stones" to pass the buck and blame someone else for his failed policies is beyond stupid.

i was in belorus 2 years ago, right after a massive devaluation of the BYR, the prices of everything had massively increased, but no one's wages had.

you could see people fishing at the lake near my hotel in winter, not because they enjoyed it, but because that's the only way they could get anything to eat.

retailers and shopkeepers and middlemen are not the problem, and  are not any sort of NWO conspirators, pull your head out of your ass.

lukashenko's statements about shopkeepers is just  a diversion, a red herring, because he doesn't want to take blame or be responsible for his own policies that have destroyed the country's economy, and you're taking the bait for some reason.

lukashenko is a madman and a tyrant, and the bane of his people.
