I am glad you said this. It is a job that they were not forced to take. This job meets their needs or they would get out of that line of work. I imagine they are individuals who understand the danger and may even desire it. We all know people who have this trait. If they are not cops or firefighters they skydive or rock climb or any other sport that has an element of risk. I appreciate what both cops and firefighters do but question the level of retirement funds they have come to expect. Some receive 90-100% of their wages upon retirement and they generally retire at 55. This has got to be hard on cities and municipalities that in turn have to raise rates to cover them. These jobs aren't for everyone but for those who find their way into these fields they should appreciate they can fufill the need they have and maybe back off on the pensions a bit. I am for unions but be reasonable when negotiating pensions- the money comes from the citizens who paid your wages all previous years.

That's probably the best comment on here. The police pensions are outrageous, and municipalities will get to the point where they will pay more for retired cops, than actual cops on the streets. Then while, collecting a pension, these "retired" cops go out and get jobs or do "consulting" on top of these pensions. Meanwhile the rest of us are left to the wolves of the "market".
This motivates the "brotherhood" to go out and write tickets for the pettiest of offenses to fund bankrupt municipal corporations due to the brotherhood leeching all of us taxpayers with their pensions.

I'm effectively under martial law in my neighborhood. I have to drive like a grandma just to get around. They put up 35 MPH speed limits on arterial roads with little to no traffic and they have motorcycle pigs hiding behind fences and utility boxes waiting to suck hundreds of dollars out of you. Driving to work or the grocery store becomes a tax to feed these fat pensions, and I am beyond sick of it.
Once I was on a freeway in Arizona near Luke Air Force Base, and it was all farmland with a 45MPH speed limit. And there's pigs writing people tickets. You could go 80 MPH down this thing and be reasonable and prudent. I figured out quickly why no one was using this freeway as it is a giant trap. The rural two lane surface streets nearby ironically were 50MPH. Go figure. It's a racket.

I just don't understand, if cops don't like their job, why don't they just quit? Afterall, being killed on the job is an occupational hazard of law enforcement, even being "assassinated." Now, don't get me wrong what happened was extraordinary but still not impossible and while (formerly) highly improbable did happen; of course the current enviornment what with all the "bad" publicity about brutality and murder and all...I mean, just think on it for a second, one must acknowledge risk is heightened. Cop is a lousy job and few people really feel protected by law enforcement, and the few times regular people do come in contact with them the experience is usually less than satisfying. So then, knowing this full-well and up front just what kind of person wants to become a law enforcement officer. I leave the rest to you imagination.
If I liked killing, I'd definately join the police force. Every time I kill, I get rewarded with extensive paid vacation. You know, to celebrate my kill. Plus the DA's got my back, and will handle the grand jury process. I cant believe they would pay me to do that job!

logicalman, we don't know the details of what happened. The shooter was probably dressed like a thousand others, he may have walked like the thousand others along the footpath past the cop car and then in 2 seconds stepped over and popped them.
These cops are the first to be killed in NYC in over 3 years, doesn't sound like a high risk occupation considering how many other jobs in NYC have had staff killed. Taxi drivers, security guards, convenience store staff and others all have a higher risk of being murdered but they don't get praised everyday as "heroes" or given fat pensions after 20 years.

Too few people today say what is in their hearts and stick with it when the winds blow in the other direction.
