How To Stay Warm In Philadelphia - Burn Dollar Bills

Tyler Durden's picture

Apparently taking a page out of China's book, Factually reports the Philadelphia Federal Reserve office (apparently aware of the worthlessness of their fiat currency) sends old currency to local power plants, where it's burned for electricity. As WSJ reports, The Fed destroys more than 5,000 tons of U.S. currency a year - most of it once went to landfills, but the central bank has pushed for years to go green with all that green. It appears we have come a long way from the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond’s 1953 annual report when it boasted it had "money to burn."

From 1953...

As Gizmodo reports,

Philadelphia is literally burning money to keep the lights on. And that's a good thing! They used to just shred it and send it to landfills, letting all that energy go to waste.

...

"Rather than just sitting in a landfill, it's producing electricity for residents in the Delaware Valley, here in our district," an official at the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia proudly told the Wall Street Journal.

Other municipalities around the country have similar currency incineration programs, including Los Angeles County, where they burn as much as 500 tons of money per year. I suppose the image of burning money is a good reminder to turn the lights off when you leave a room. Your dollar bills are literally going up in smoke.

You can't burn gold!!!

But it's a good conductor so maybe you could put electricity through it to heat it up and make yourself a nice stove to cook food and radiator to keep you warm in winter.

wrong, if you want it to heat, you want a high resistance material, not a good conductor... conductance is a measure of how easy electrons will flow through a conductor, and resistance is the inverse... if too much electrons get "stuck" into the conductor, less current is able to pass through and part of the energy is wasted, usually into heat or light (thats how light bulbs and coil heaters work)... gold has high conductance low resistance, hence a terrible heater

Gold is also very ductile - can be drawn into long, thin wires.  Increase the length, decrease cross sectional area, and if you still have any problems then pump up the Amps.

;)

But yeah, you got a good point there somewhere.  High resistance = less current flow = less power ( = I2R ) so I guess we gotta find that happy balance between the two ...

Mostly right, but current increases with load. To overcome issues related to wire size, increase voltage, then step it down via transformers at end use.

Thats how those relatively thin wires on the poles are able to distribute power across long distances.

According to the Peak Oil crowd, you will want to calculate BTU Returned to BTU invested (BTUR/BTUI).

Some who may be more conspiracy minded may view this as a way to hasten the process to end cash altogether.

Why have dirty money when one can have a nice clean card, or better yet, a nice chip implanted in oneself?

So much money is "lost" due to cash transactions and non recording of taxes, think of all the revenue that will be gained "for the Chilluns"

Why use paper? Many countries use polymers instead of paper. Australia is the leader in this and the polymer money lasts 5 times longer than the old paper money did. Most banknotes in Australia last 10 years and many are still circulating after 15 years; and they pick up far less crap than the paper money did and when worn out the polymer is recycled.

Also most countries would have replaced your dollar bill equivalent with a coin. Coins are great for vending machines and here in Australia there is the one and two dollar coins.

Been well over 20 years and the biggest bill (in my country) that the ATM spits out is a fifty.  You can only get hundreds by going to a bank.  Hyperinflation will come and you still won't be able to get bigger that a fifty.  You'll be forced to go cashless because there won't be enough fiftys in the ATM ...or the bank ... and the max withdrawal from a branch will still be 3 grand ... and the minimum reportable amount will still be ten grand ... this shit don't happen by accident.  Relax and let inflation do the rest ...

If you think a do not fly list is bad, just wait until you are on a do not buy list.

Of course they burn money in the USA because they are too stupid to stop the circulation of one and two dollar bills and have instead ONLY one and two dollar coins. If I remember correctly this would save some $500 million and more per year.

Continued use of $1 and $2 paper bills has been an issue for the Fed for decades now.  (Used to work in operations for them). More than HALF of the currency handled by the Fed is in the form of $1 notes.   Costs a fortune to process them and take the won out ones out of circulation and replace them with new bills.  You're lucky to get 6 months out f a $1 bill. Pretty much every other nation has replaced paper notes with coins for equivalent 'buying power' - e.g. $1 or $2 coin Euros, etc.  They've wanted to eliminate these bills for decades and mandate replacement with coins (which last decades) but it's not politically viable.  Getting rid of the penny makes sense too but same issue:

YOU CAN'T REMIND THE SHEEP THAT THEIR MONEY IS BECOMING WORTHLESS

Who has the contract to provide the paper for the US banknotes? That contract must be worth hundreds of millions every year and that provides a big incentive (bribes, kickbacks etc) for the pressure to change to coins/polymer to be ignored.

The highest bill is the $100 in part because of the "war on drugs". They want to make it harder to move illicit cash around so no more $10,000 notes, no more bearer bonds and lots of complaints that other countries have higher denominations (like the 500 Euro note).
