NYPD Boycotts de Blasio: New York City Arrests And Citations Plummet As Cops Stage "Virtual Work Stoppage"

Tyler Durden's picture

First, NYC's cops turned their back on Bill de Blasio, best known for first rushing to side with New York's "oppressed" minorities "threatened" by the local police, and then, when two weeks later 2 NYPD cops were executed in cold blood and in broad daylight in what some hinted was an unintended consequence of the mayor's bashing of the police, scrambling to undo his previous populism and to show his affection for New York's cops.

Now, those tasked to protect and to serve the Big Apple, appear to have decided to turn their back on their job entirely, and in what is shaping up to be a long vendetta with the mayor, have succumbed to what the NY Post calls "a virtual work stoppage."

This implicit strike by the NYPD is manifesting as follows: "traffic tickets and summonses for minor offenses have dropped off by a staggering 94 percent following the execution of two cops — as officers feel betrayed by the mayor and fear for their safety."

To some this is great news: the local police will no longer be breathing over everyone's back, and one can park in the red zone without fears of a summons. To others this bears an unpleasant resemblance to New York in the 1970s and early 80s when the police dared not show their face in various parts of the city due to rampant crime.

Fearful that it may be the latter, the mayor has decided to let all populist rhetoric drop and instead focus on mending fences:

The dramatic drop comes as Police Commissioner Bill Bratton and Mayor Bill de Blasio plan to hold an emergency summit on Tuesday with the heads of the five police unions to try to close the widening rift between cops and the administration.

The unprecedented meeting is being held at the new Police Academy in Queens at 2 p.m., sources said.

Meanwhile, unless something changes, New York may indeed become the perfect incubator for a new crime wave:

Angry union leaders have ordered drastic measures for their members since the Dec. 20 assassination of two NYPD cops in a patrol car, including that two units respond to every call.

It has helped contribute to a nose dive in low-level policing, with overall arrests down 66 percent for the week starting Dec. 22 compared with the same period in 2013, stats show.

Citations for traffic violations fell by 94 percent, from 10,069 to 587, during that time frame.

Summonses for low-level offenses like public drinking and urination also plunged 94 percent — from 4,831 to 300. Even parking violations are way down, dropping by 92 percent, from 14,699 to 1,241.

Drug arrests by cops assigned to the NYPD’s Organized Crime Control Bureau — which are part of the overall number — dropped by 84 percent, from 382 to 63.

Of course, one may ask if those numbers were abnormally high to begin with: a trigger-happy police going about arresting everyone in their path would surely lead to a high baseline to begin with. But as the Fed has learned the hard way, it is all about the flow, not the stock. And any changes and deviations in the NYPD's pattern will surely be promptly taken advantage of by New York's criminal underworld.

Naturally, New York's cops will be the last to admit they are engaging in what amounts to a city-wide boycott of the mayor's office: "Police sources said Monday that safety concerns were the main reason for the dropoff in police activity, but added that some cops were mounting an undeclared slowdown in protest of de Blasio’s response to the non-indictment in the police chokehold death of Eric Garner."

“The call last week from the PBA is what started it, but this has been simmering for a long time,” one source said.

“This is not a slowdown for slowdown’s sake. Cops are concerned, after the reaction from City Hall on the Garner case, about de Blasio not backing them.”

The Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association has warned its members to put their safety first and not make arrests “unless absolutely necessary."

How does this play out? It is unclear, although de Blasio will almost certainly be made to walk with his populist tail between his legs before there is any resolution. More importantly, he - like many others to follow - will finally learn that every action, and statement, does have consequences, even in a world in which the Chairman, or Chairwoman, does get to work and mask every problem with even more printing. Even in a world in which the police state has gotten just "a tad powerful" in recent years.

As for whether a crime wave will in fact hit New York City, we have no idea. We do know, however, that if anyone needed yet another reason to avoid being in the middle of Times Square zoo on New Year's Eve, this is it.

Airweight .38 is nice but you need more stopping power SIg 9mm works like a charm.

Remember though be it a pistol or automatic this is nothing more than personal protection a good shotgun and rifle is a must for home defense.

Good luck and don't shoot your eye out (wink) practice practice practice

A good hammerless pocket pistol. Will not snag when you shoot through the jacket pocket. Just came out with the 9mm.

I have some experience that you may benefit from:

1. If you use a semi-auto vs revolver then:
    a. you will leave spent shell casings at the scene unless you pick them up before you depart the scene, which may be difficult or impossible to do in dark, vegetation, etc; the police can use the spent shell casings to track you and to tie you to the shooting
    b. semi-autos require jacketed bullets in order to ensure reliable feeding from magazine into the chamber, and jacketed bullets are much less effective at stopping bodies than soft point bullets or wad cutters, which will fire 100% reliably in revolvers

2. You would most likely need to defend yourself at very close range, so to me the most important factor in caliber selection is stopping power, so I would use either a .357 magnum or .44 magnum

3. You can get very compact snub-nose or pug revolvers in .357 magnum or .44 magnum calibers

4. If you do have to shoot, control your emotions, aim carefully, and fire with gentle careful trigger pull at the center of the chest. If you are using a .357 magnum or .44 magnum at close range and properly execute the aiming and firing, you won't need more than 1 round per attacker.

They are still performing all other functions, but they know traffic tickets and summonses are irrelevant, and chiefly conducted for their revenue potential.  I'd say this is the elephant in the room.  This squabble clearly illustrates that these blood suckers (the system itself, not any individual) spend a good portion of thier time sucking our blood.

Wouldn't it be funny as hell if nothing happened? No crime wave, no riots in the streets...just New Yorkers, going about their daily business...

Maybe they don't NEED so many cops.

Be even funnier if crime actually went DOWN during this time. Really, really funny...

C'mon New York...you can do this! I know it's tempting to take advantage, but take one for the team here!...Just behave for a week or two, that's all.
Then, when they go back to work, you can carry on as usual, even make up for lost time. But the statistics we'll have will be PRICELESS!

Sounds like this report is encouraging news for liberty at large.

Of course, the main stream media will hear this and IMMEDIATELY try to find some lemming supposedly effected by this.

But what happens if they do this "work stoppage" and.. all that happens is a loss in revenue?

It just illustrates what law enforcement is - theater to justify this murderous tax scheme.

Sounds like the typical aussie youth getaway. Can I ask you something? Does the threat of being shot make it less likely that you will fuck around like a wanker? Because here in OZ you see, you are unlikely to be shot, so minor transgressions are generally common and dealt with leaniently. I mean, you can do whatever pleases you in the parking lot so long as you don't piss anyone off, who happens to complain.

I did not know much about the police system until I got cited by a cop as intimidation and retaliation for my videoing cops shaking down motorists. Since then I made a study of the laws, police operations, investigations into police misconduct etc, and I have had a very unpleasant discovery of:
- how dangerous police can be,
- how out-of-control, abusive and violent police routinely are
- how little citizens can do to stop police misconduct or get justice against police.

Now I understand the police to be an organized gangster community and business for their own benefit at the expense of ordinary people.

One of the most disgusting aspects of police behavior is the continuous stream of propaganda from them, especially from their mafia unions, about how dangerous their jobs are, how they are in constant danger of being shot and killed by firearms, and why they are justified in shooting immediately all the magazines they are carrying at anyone who makes them fearful or suspicious, whether armed or not.

Well, look it up for yourself on the web - police is not even in the top 10 most dangerous jobs in the USA, even with all the criminals and all the guns in the USA - AND more than 75% of the police injuries and deaths are NOT from firearms.

I was targeted by criminals 3 times in my life and my own weapons kept me from being a victim. Now I see that the police are potentially EVEN MORE DANGEROUS to me than ordinary criminals because even just pointing a weapon at a cop will bring the entire police state down on you.

So I am strongly in favor of greatly reducing the number of police, greatly reducing police powers, especially to stop, search, arrest and shoot, and absolutely the war on drugs must be terminated because it has become a tool for the gangsters in uniform to make war on the people.

Well said. I think anyone who has had a run in of any kind with the police has had their perception of the police rotate 180 degrees.

I wouldn't do it myself at this point but these people shooting cops are helping us all. Cops stopping their shakedowns for cash, jesus, what a Christmas present to NYC. How do I get the same in my state? Oh yeah!

The funniest part (if this trend continues) will be when people realize they barely need cops at all,  let alone these huge battalion-sized police mafias they have in most towns.

Police: you made your bed. Or you at least you stood by and obeyed  unconstitutional orders while your associates or chief made your bed for you. I have zero sympathy.

It is important to note that police are just the low hanging fruit here,  the ones who are infinitely more responsible are the police chiefs, the judges and the politicians who are enforcing, upholding and creating unconstitutional laws every day, in full knowledge that they are illegal.

If the cops won't do their jobs, fire them and replace them with an undocumented Democrat.

Fuck 'em - they're basically upset because people are upset with what they perceive as a pattern of excessive force and want to exercise their 1st amendment rights. Anyone claiming that the exercise of free speech caused the murder of 2 cops by a lone psycho is a dangerous idiot.  Or cryptofascist.

Perhaps some of the cops have jext realised they have to step back a little from the edge.

If ordinary citizens start thinking about killing cops, then the cops are very exposed. They at least need the ordinary Joe to keep believing they are there 'to do good'.

Maybe its the zero-tolerance stoopid stuff they have stopped enforcing, and err, the err, serious crime is still being investigated. If that is the case, we could prehaps suggest places they could look.

200 West St, 270 Park Avenue, and 500 Pearl St. might make a good start.
