These Are NOT Heroes
A couple of days ago, I was listening on the radio to Joe Biden speaking at the funeral of one of the two NYPD cops who had been killed on December 20th. Biden referred to one of the officers, whose funeral he was attending, as a "hero." Not-so-beloved NYC Mayor de Blasio added to this with "New York City has lost a hero, a remarkable man because of the depth of this commitment to those all around him." So, again: a hero.
I was so angry at what I was hearing that I turned the radio off (and, as boring as driving a car is, it takes a lot for me to choose silence over listening). Why was I so mad? Simple: the fact that these guys were shot dead doesn't make them heroes. Period.
Were they nice guys? I dunno, maybe. Were they diligent officers? Could be; I have no idea. Did they love their families? I don't know! Stop with the questions! What I do know is that the simple act of sitting in a squad car and having a lunatic put a bullet through your brain doesn't make you a hero. The word has become overused, particularly by politicians who are doing nothing more than pandering to the public.
Just as a totally random example, I did a search for Medal of Honor recipients and grabbed a description of the very first one I found; read this:
Discovering seven Iraqi vehicles in a column attempting to depart, Corporal Dunham and his team stopped the vehicles to search them for weapons. As they approached the
vehicles, an insurgent leaped out and attacked Corporal Dunham. Corporal Dunham wrestled the insurgent to the ground and in the ensuing struggle saw the insurgent release a grenade. Corporal Dunham immediately alerted his fellow Marines to the threat. Aware of the imminent danger and without hesitation, Corporal Dunham covered the grenade with his helmet and body, bearing the brunt of the explosion and shielding his Marines from the blast. In an ultimate and selfless act of bravery in which he was mortally wounded, he saved the lives of at least two fellow Marines
OK, folks, now that is a hero in my book. He did something selfless in the face of horrific risk to his own welfare. Sure, he was in a dangerous place (just like, to a vastly lesser extent, the NYPD cops) but the cold fact of the matter is that he took the path of sacrifice rather than self-preservation. And you don't have to be a soldier or cop to be a hero. Any everyday person can fit the role, and throughout history, many have.
Would either Wenjian Liu or Rafael Ramo behaved in the same fashion as Corporal Dunham? Maybe. Maybe not. We'll never know. And if they did, they should rightly be called heroes. But, for pity's sake, let's try to reserve these labels for those who truly deserve them.
The officers died a needless and tragic death, and I'm glad the shooter took his own life and saved taxpayers the expense of giving him a trial. But...................these are.........not............heroes.
Thank you!

I'm been here for years. I know when I see a MSNBC NWO troll.
Put 3%/Oathkeepers in a post and watch the trolls come out.
Most People know it's on dude. The cops will be the last group to give up our guns. That's why they demonize us.
My Clan can not be stopped.
We are armed. Molon Lobe!
It's just too bad that so many of you are nothing more than costumed agents of and for the state. Armed revenue collectors, really. Nothing more.
When seconds count, the "police" are minutes away. Or hours. Or never.
Really, fuck you and dial 411 when you need armed assistance...here's to hoping all beat cops got new ear buds to drown out the radio dispatch.
How often do you think people need armed assistance - and why can't they simply be armed themselves?
I bet you're the sort of fella who could shoot some kids and then joke about it in the shower afterward, eh?
If you need armed assistance it is already to late to call them. You might want to lock and load your own.

We used to love to say, "when seconds count, we're just minutes away."
If you get murdered by a cop....does that make you a hero too...or just a martyr?
It just makes you stupid.
ny police unions want: 2 patrol cars to respond to a call..seems like just adding more targets to me, but then perhaps not pissing on your local community, would to me, be more worth while and safer. buying more military gear will be the answer.
you better worship the king's guard or you will be protected from yourself in a cage provided by the king.
The other day my wife and I had this discussion. I was trying to express my frustration with every Vet being called a hero. I love my friends in the Army. They were and are great guys. They are selfless, for the most part. And some of them are bona fide heroes. With medals and everything.
Some of them have never left New England. Not their fault. But they are not heroes.
My wife laughed.
She said her Dad talked about World War II as if it was a big frat party. He was always 10-15 miles behind the lines building the roads for the trucks to roll over to bring stuff to the troops. Noble work. But not heroic. He saw one German in "the wild" as he called it. He and the German were both scared to death. My father in law told him to run away. And the German did.
There are heroes in the world. We should honor them, and hold up their sacrifices and deeds as exemplars.
We should honor the cops who were shot for being cops. I am no fan of most cops. But they do not all deserved to be shot in cold blood. They were probably decent guys. But I agree, they were not heroes.
deserves got nothing to do with it....
Unforgiven
In Nam they called those guys REMF's.....Heroes my patootie. Most of them are jus more government titty suckers, doing as little as they can to get outrageous, unsustainable pensions (70% of salary after 30 years?). What's the difference between ANY government employee and our AV armed forces or cops, how are they different from FEMA, Dept. of Ag, or any other apparatchik in the gov't?
Don't wanna be a cop? Don't sign up and go earn an honest living.
Don't want to get offed? Stop murdering us with impunity.
They've gone from Guardians to Warriors. saw a pic in the paper with our local sheriff SWAT team all pot bellied dount sucking people scurrying about in tac gear with full auto M-4's. They're all so fat they have to shoot cuz they couldn't possibly sprint 100 yards..
They all think the rules apply only us mopes, and they are immune from things like speeding, drunk driving, &tc. You get your face shot off because you shakily produced your wallet, too bad. The kill ratio is 10-1. Think all 10,000 people killed by bacon last year deserved it? No, but their stone cold killers are Heroes!
Police killabout 400 people a year and you call that " killing us" with impunity?" IS it possible that any of those shot were bad guys? Meanwhile back in the hood blacks kill 8000 other blacks every year.
proof please? I am Australian, and the concept of 8000 people shooting 8000 others is just.. nonsense. Your a spoofy turd for not backing up your claim and making me write this.
Flash-bang grenade into a baby's crib, then told by the city/county to basically go Fuck yourself... Hero's indeed.
USA!!! USA!!! USA!!!
Good luck outside bartertown reprobate.
Greetings Tim -
I am really glad you brought up this issue (Nouveau hero worship), because I believe it to be a product of the last ~13 or so years. Perhaps 09/12/2001 as the inception date in fact... For the oldsters out there, 'hero' was a term rarely ascribed or given to anyone Alive. Selfless acts that cost the 'giving' individual his life were simply known as 'selfless acts' and people were humbly, but not Overly 'honored' for their selflessness.
Fast-forward to today - when the simple act of getting dressed in the morning makes one worthy of some sort of 'award', and if they happen to be putting on a government uniform - well, 'heroism' simply goes with whatever the job title happens to be. It is Sickening. It cheapens the title, lowers the bar and dumbs-down those who would otherwise look up to a real 'hero'.
The other rather disturbing aspect of this Nouveau hero worship, is that for a supposedly free people - who should always have at least one eye jaded towards Any type of government authority, the perverted sense of seeing authority figures as always being 'good' is right out of a totalitarian playbook. To question uniformed authority figures today is to be painted as 'unpatriotic' --- un-American even...
Skrew that...
Tell you what - when innocent victims of Shock-troop, no-knock raids or some other type of romp 'em, stomp 'em, MMA-clone, SEAL team 6 wannabe wild-ass jacked-up city-soldiers get-your-war-on types are given a street-closing tax-payer $funded parade, replete with 'honors', I might change my tune. I might sit down with the Pope for tea at 2 PM tomorrow all the same...
Amen brother. If anything they were slacking by letting a nut with a pistol sneak up on them while they were on the job. And what is up with hiring a guy (the Asian) who appears to be so slight in stature that his uniform shirt hangs of him as is he has no shoulders?
Okay, this was an interesting discussion ... then this. Let ignorance reign supreme.
I really hope something aweful happens to those you love.
It will be your fault for not being diligent in their defense, yo.
dumbu sauce, there, fixed it
Heros are not folks who have something to gain and little to lose when they do something (or don't do something)...
Heros are those who have nothing to gain and everything to lose when they commit to an act...
IMO
Elevator news says police killed by guns is way up this year - to like 15? officers........
OK, so the point of that newflash is what? sympathy for the police? maybe, but I'll bet they've killed way more than that. Turn public sentiment against guns? Well, if people are shooting cops all the more reason for people to have guns to protect themselves.
NYPD = Sanitation with guns. Except Sanitation actually earns their pay most of the time...
The only heroes in NYC these days run soup kitchens and no kill shelters.
And my pot dealer....He's a fucking hero!
Once being a cop is more dangerous than farming, driving a cab, driving a truck, roofing, construction, being a garbageman, being an electrical lineman; then there might be an argument. When cops aren't privileged in law, and if they were drafted in some way so they were doing their job not as a career but as a true public service; then there might be an argument.
Same thing applies to the military. I'd have agreed there was an element of heroism when there was a draft. When someone was liable to be plucked out of their regular lives and put into combat with little or not actual consent, and then they were to do anything but hide under something solid; that qualifies as heroism. But seeking out employment that is dangerous, and then it turns out to be dangerous, is not "heroism" in and of itself. It might be bravery. It might be a heedless inability to assess risk.
This cutural meme that everyone who wears a uniform of any kind is a hero just because of the uniform is a dangerous form of bullshit. It's a symptom of our decline into the ranker forms of declining Empire, the part where the ideological cultural mythology has worn off and all that's left is rule by force, where the strong take what they want and have no responsibility to anything but their own advantage. Such creatures need everyone to worship the uniform, because the person inside it has nothing admirable to redeem themselves.
" Such creatures need everyone to worship the uniform, because the person inside it has nothing admirable to redeem themselves." Awesome, and so true.
I would add: How dangerous would "policing" be if those doing the "policing" weren't actually going around robbing, maiming, caging, and killing? Sort of like lamenting how dangerous a mugger's "job" is.
The banksters need to repay us.
That last paragraph is beautifully put swmnguy. Wish I could have been as eloquent with my comments on the subject, but I get so F'ng angry every time I see this 'hero' bullshit that restraint becomes difficult.
Any member given props for their acts will clearly state "Im not a Hero". I was doing what I am trained to do. The two in squad car were victims. It's the Elite propping up.
Dear gun and badge thugs,
The flip-side of your oaths is Article 3, Section 3.
The banksters need to repay us.
It's there JOB. Hero's to me. NYPD officers and brass standing up to illegal abuse and laws denieing citizens rights to bear arms. Stop and frisk behavior. Now those would be heroes and sworn to constitutinal duty members.
Learn to spell you dip shit flip twit. The job is over there, not here. (location) They signed up, so it is their right to be shot. (possession, ownership) The're not in the building, so we can pull it. (they are)
Oh do you mean keeping the oath they took to get their pay check?
Authority that steals and kills is not authority.
The banksters need to repay us.
Exactly, doing something heroic makes you a hero, it's not handed out to those who put on a costume and eat donuts.
They were mercenaries for the city that's about it. I'm sorry they had to get killed, Sorry for their family's. They were well paid union employees and they would have retired with nice pensions and lived a hell of lot better than the poor fucks who signed up to defend freedom in Iraq. Their 1 million plus NYPD life insurance polices will make sure their children will be taken care of if they don't blow it on bullshit.
Unfortunately they were in the wrong place at the wrong time. Believe the hero propaganda if it makes you feel better.
I bet they were snuffed out by dirty cops. These 2 cops probably knew too much.
<<They were mercenaries for the city that's about it.>>
" What is a coward? A coward is a man who would think twice before going empty handed into a cage with a Lion. A brave man? A brave man doesn't know what a Lion is.." Charles Bukowski
So you want put your life on the line every day instead of splitting hairs on the definition of a hero? The NYPD is hiring but you would never pass the pych test they have a "moron" disqualification box.
Screw you and your Heroes. Moms are Heroes, these individuals were not appointed the position of COP they signed up for the job. Hero's? Hardly not on my dime asshole.
And besides New York is a Cesspool of idiocy, just you knowing the the NY police are hiring speaks volume as to who the real moron is here...
I did the job. I got shot once too (in the military, not on the job)...wasn't anything heroic about it.
wow did you miss the point.
Getting shot and killed doesn't make you a hero.
However, your kind of reactionary hero worshipping of cops surely does allow cops to kill unarmed people, evade punishment, and lead to absurd apologetics that build the road to the Police State.
You know the one - where police decide whether or not to investigate the murder of unarmed civilians, and the police decide whether or not to let people protest their systematic violence.
Theeseer , actually most PD's disqualify applicants that test at an IQ of 104 or higher ,, they figure that anyone with higher than average intelligence will become bored and quit quickly or will not be the obedient drone that they are looking for.
That's not a slam at the police ,, that's the stone cold truth.
Good one. They also have a paranoid schizophrenic disqualification ... I agree with the logic in the article, and that's after having family in both law enforcement and the military. The term hero has been rendered meaningless. But, the cop hating, authority hating, bed-wetting paranoids that comment just have me LMAO. Makes for good humurous anecdote.
actually, Morons are accepted. Anyone with an above average I.Q. is automatically rejected. They prefer the morons. If you can tell the difference between a gun and a cell phone you are rejected.
Aside from which, moron, psych and I.Q. are two different qualifiers.
The morons do what they're told...
frisk every black or rican that you see on these 4 blocks....
roadblock main street and bully the driver into allowing a search by lying to him that you smell booze or weed...
join the SWAT team so they can wear pretty black pj's throw grenades and hold select fire weapons while collecting lots of overtime for training...
enforce civil infractions with deadly force instead of questioning ... why not issue a ticket...
teach "DARE" classes to introduce middle schoolers to drugs ,, creating lots of new perps you can arrest and feed to the WOD machine.
Painting all cops and departments with the same brush now, are we? The USA is a country of 320,000,000 million people ... all police services are the same, with equal standards ... right? Must be nice living in a reality that can simplify things down into ludicrous stereotypes.
I was a Peace Officer. It was a job. I walked away from shit that most cops arrest people for today.
I was taught in the Army and as a Peace Officer that I was a Public servent and to follow the Constitution. I joined the Army to avoid the draft and to be an Officer. I speak three languages, English, Spanish and Thai.
I became a rabid Libertarian. I now give letures when I'm back in the states for L.E.A.P. I'm anti New World Order.
Thre daughters, all awake like me. I add to the system.
Some people call my family crazy because we love Ron Paul.
But so do all the Vet's and Retired cops I know.
Hell I live and work in Asia, South America. I see a lot of things working for a Hedge Fund.
Let me clue you in. The Cops, rank and file are fed up with being arrest/revenue whores. Things can change.
The cops/Military are much more awake than you know dude.
But the cops are like humanitys immune system.
Once the crooks know the cops are backing off watch out.
My advice is carry a weapon. Arm your kids, wife.
This is why I live in Asia. I'm tired of war.
But in America. It's on.....intellectually you can feel than we are at a tipping point.
"Let me clue you in. The Cops, rank and file are fed up with being arrest/revenue whores. Things can change."
Man thats fucking awesome.
thanks,
To the rest. Think about this....
If you think theses men who are the cops are not made up of people who are awake to the NWO agenda. You are wrong.
Dude that's what you saw when those cops turned their back on that communist/Facist/coporate whore Mayor. Fuck him and the "Rev." al Sharp-ton. All of them whores for money.
I get that there are bad cops. I fear and hate them as much as you. I 3 have kids.
Would you rather live next me and my clan? Or that POS coward Mayor?
I got balls dude. that's why I'm a threat to the system. I'm on to their scam. I speak out. I'm a 3%, OathKeeper.
I'm American And I will stand my ground. Get it?
Yo're best friend or you're worst nightmare.
Up to you....
