Russia's "Startling" Proposal To Europe: Dump The US, Join The Eurasian Economic Union

Tyler Durden's picture

Slowly but surely Europe is figuring out that as a result of the western economic and financial blockade of Russian, it is Europe itself that is suffering the most. And while Germany was first to acknowledge this late in 2014 when its economy swooned and is now on the verge of a recession, now others are catching on. Case in point: the former head of the European Commission, and Italy’s former Prime Minister, Romano Prodi who told Messaggero newspaper that the "weaker Russian economy is extremely unprofitable for Italy."

The other details from Prodi's statement:

Lowered prices in the international energy markets have positive aspects for the Italian consumers, who pay less for the fuel, but the effect will be only short-term. In the long-term however the weaker economic situation in countries producing energy resources, caused by lower oil and gas prices, mostly in Russia, is extremely unprofitable for Italy, he said.

The lowering of the oil and gas prices in combination with the sanctions, pushed by the Ukrainian crisis, will drop the Russian GPD by five percent per annum, and thus it will cause cutting of the Italian export by about 50%,” Prodi said.

“Setting aside the uselessness or imminence of the sanctions, one should highlight a clear skew: regardless of the rouble rate against dollar, which is lower by almost a half, the American export to Russia is growing, while the export from Europe is shrinking.”

In other words, just as slowly, the world is starting to grasp the bottom line: it is not the financial exposure to Russia, or the threat of financial contagion should Russia suffer a major recession or worse: it is something far simpler that will lead to the biggest harm for Europe's countries. The lack of trade. Because while central banks can monetize everything, leading to an unprecedented asset bubble which if only for the time being boosts investor and consumer confidence, they can't print trade - that all important driver of growth in a globalized world long before central banks were set to monetize over $1 trillion in bonds each and every year to mask the fact that the world is deep in a global depression.

Which is why we read the following report written in yesterday's Deutsche Wirtschafts Nachrichten with great interest because it goes right to the bottom line. In it Russia has a not so modest proposal to Europe: dump trade with the US, whose call for Russian "costs" has cost you another year of declining economic growth, and instead join the Eurasian Economic Union! From the source:

Russia has presented a startling proposal to overcome the tensions with the EU: The EU should renounce the free trade agreement with the United States TTIP and enter into a partnership with the newly established Eurasian Economic Union instead. A free trade zone with the neighbors would make more sense than a deal with the US.

It surely would, but then how will Europe feign outrage when the NSA is found to have spied yet again on its "closest trading partners?" Some more on Russia's proposal from EUobserver:

Vladimir Chizhov told EUobserver: “Our idea is to start official contacts between the EU and the EAEU as soon as possible. [German] chancellor Angela Merkel talked about this not long ago. The EU sanctions [on Russia] are not a hindrance”.

“I think that common sense advises us to explore the possibility of establishing a common economic space in the Eurasian region, including the focus countries of the Eastern Partnership [an EU policy on closer ties with Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, and Ukraine]".

"We might think of a free trade zone encompassing all of the interested parties in Eurasia”.

He described the new Russia-led bloc as a better partner for the EU than the US, with a dig at health standards in the US food industry.

“Do you believe it is wise to spend so much political energy on a free trade zone with the USA while you have more natural partners at your side, closer to home? We don’t even chlorinate our chickens”, the ambassador said.

The treaty establishing the Eurasian Union entered into life on Thursday (1 January).

It includes Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Russia, with Kyrgyzstan to join in May.

Modelled on the EU, it has a Moscow-based executive body, the Eurasian Economic Commission, and a political body, the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council, where member states’ leaders take decisions by unanimity.

It has free movement of workers and a single market for construction, retail, and tourism. Over the next 10 years, it aims to create a court in Minsk, a financial regulator in Astana and, possibly, to open Eurasian Economic Commission offices in Astana, Bishkek, Minsk, and Yerevan.

It also aims to launch free movement of capital, goods, and services, and to extend its single market to 40 other sectors, with pharmaceuticals next in line in 2016.

And as a reminder: The Eurasian Economic Union, a trade bloc of former Soviet states, expanded to four nations Friday when Armenia formally joined, a day after the union between Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan began.

So the ball is in your court, Europe: will it be a triple-dip (and soon thereafter quadruple: see Japan) recession as your Goldman-controlled central bank plunders ever more of what little is left of middle-class wealth with promises that this year - for real - is when it all turns around, or will Europe acknowledge it has had enough and shifts its strategic, and trade, focus from west (speaking of the TTIP, Germany's agriculture minister just said "We can't protect every sausage" referring to the TTIP) to east?

Considering just whose interests are represented by the unelected bureaucrats in Brussels, we won't be holding our breath.

The freight will not be near fast as lightweight passenger trains.

But far quicker than present.

Right; that's my point: they should build a line suitable for freight; they can buy a few jets for passenger traffic and still spend less than building a high-speed line.

Building a high-speed line to transport heavy freight is a bad idea for two reasons.  First, a shit-ton of cash would be pissed away creating track geometry (curve radii, grade changes, eliminating grade crossings) needed for high-speed rail equipment.

Second, track designed for high-speed rail equipment would be trashed by heavy-freight traffic.  Case in point:  AMTRAK's northeast corridor.

Dear Geek - "they should build a line suitable for freight;"

Obviously, that already exists. The Russians have had spur off of the Trans-Siberian Railroad, going into Manchuria since about 1907.

Fact is the USA does not play the great game very well. Maybe if the Harvard Mafia spent less time flipping houses and networking at cocktail parties they'd get a clue that global governance does not necesarily include them in the top positions. Russia and China are the new global hegemons for the next 200 years. They have 'homefield advantage'. India will join them shortly and the EU would be wise to look east for growth and prosperity.

I agree but there still are a few very good American programmers but not that many anymore.

One very important thing to keep in mind is most weapons systems now are software based.  The USA's piece of shit F-35 is still having endless software problems like Obamacare.gov.  Probably written by the same Canadian company using Indian programmers.

Those Russia S300/400/500 missile systems and other Russian gear is being written by some of the best programmers in the world.

Something to think about if your kid decides they want to be all that they can be in the NWO-Soros USSA-Obama banksters army, navvy or air farce.

Actually, that offer will resonate heavily in economic circles of the EU.

That trade block would have a lot of positive impacts ranging from low cost raw materials and commodities, shorter transport distances to manufacturing centers and lots of population between the Ural mountains and the Atlantic ocean.

As a UK citizen I would welcome this  - at least in principle. The TTIP swindle is a charter for US corporations to further screw with our way of life, basically a charter that says they can help themselves to our national assets.  Corporate and financial Amerika is a psychopathology that has infected entire swathes of civilization; truth to tell, the Amerikan dream has been purchased at the price of nightmare for the poor of this world, including many Amerikans. Fortunately it looks as though 2015 is going to bring some corrections to the global Ponzi swindle, but this offer from the Rus comes as a complete surprise. As the UK premier Harold Macmillan replied to someone who asked him what the most diffiocult aspect of his premiership had been, he replied 'Events dear boy, events.'  This is something some of the headbangers posting on here need to reflect on: stuff like the Berlin Wall coming down came out of left field, events in Crimea recently likewise. I've met some great Americans in Europe, Asia and elsewhere, but then they had travelled and knew there were other ways of doing business. Europe hasn't always had problems with Russia and now that most of the aberrations of Communism have largely disappeared, if they can clean uop their act corruption-wise, I can see that it would benefit both parties if we in Europe became part of this Eurasian Union; geopolitically and logistically it makes more sense. However the people running things over here are in bed with the invisible hand gang who run the US and much else. I've no doubt that the Blair's and Camerons of this world have already been allocated their places in the bunker for when it all goes tits up and Amerika throws it's last toys out of the perambulator.

We saw how vile they were in Australia with the disgusting attacks by Harper, Abbott, Cameron (who's family has financed wars aka mass murder for the Red Shield for 200 years).   They were so pathetic and disgusting in their attacks on Putin.

Nicely put. Yes, it makes every sort of sense.

I liked the language the Chinese Premier used in his address to the Australian Parliament in November (and in several other speeches in days either side) namely that we will either all win together, or we are all chosing to lose together (paraphrased).

He's indisputably right, and signaled that this is what he wants China to do, which is an opportunity that must not be missed, and taken as far as it will (safely) go, so wars and mutual damage we fear could arise become a remote possibility.

The exact same obviously applies in this situation and it is up to Moscow to make that happen (and they seem to finally want to), and I'm sure they will find Europe is receptive and willing to have both sides win, because the alternative for Europe is to lose all too.

[The incidental question is will Washington ever see its existence in those more rational terms, or are going to pursue policies of pointless dangerous cold war again?]

Hilarious thing happening in France right now. Some time ago they were contracted by Russia to build 4 Mistral ships. 2 of them were finished, but never delivered following US intervention. Construction  then halted entirely. Now Russia demands the money back plus a multi-billion dollar penalty, which, with the fallen Ruble will allow Russia to build 8 identical vessels in their own shipyards. Not only that, but India, who was just about to order 126 Dassault Rafale jets, turned right around and cancelled the deal until Russian matter is resolved. What if they pay for the planes and they don't show up either like the ships? They're having second thoughts about doing business with the EU.

They're saying they'll be buying Russian Sukhoi-30 jets instead. Combined both deals will cost French labor unions over $30 billion dollars and it'll also cost many politicians their seats.

Depreciated Ruble is accelerating the export of Russian weaponry into neighboring regions and you'll never guess who else just turned down US in favor of Russian-made tanks and helicopters. Effing Saudi Arabia! You read that right. Saudi Arabia!

If we can't sell weapons to Eurasia like we used to, we're in some serious shit.

One of their managers Man Choi or something was killed on that AirAsia crash.  Its no no small player having substantial railway projects, dams and wind turbines,  nuclear retooling that services some of the Russian plants, very impressive stuff .

Someone interested in grabbing a piece of the Silk Road would have a real stake in a profitable future. I am surprised France allowed it, even with conditions. Then looking at Mistral and the horses head  on Hollands matress, did they have a choice?

Mercantilist musings.

If your concern about a tanking Russia is that you won't have a market to export to, you might be a mercantilist.

What should be concerning is that you lose a trading partner to import energy from. Your remaining energy importers see this and screw you.

Your country's exporters could just sell domestically, trade with someone else, or redeploy resources. But at least they're in your country. It's not a total loss. At least not a total loss when you measure things besides using the ridiculous GDP stat.

"What should be concerning is that you lose a trading partner to import energy from. Your remaining energy importers see this and screw you."

In a world of falling prices and over production? It's a buyers market. After the last fall to $31 it took years to get above $100 again. They can not afford to disenfranchise a buyer and await that long for a revenue revival. Shutting production is not an option for the big players, it's the bread, butter and the cream.

For that matter the same applies to the increasingly desperate and soon to be broke Russian economy. People need to eat, or they start getting grumpy. Russia can see that coming so has to act, they considered the pickle over the Christmas period and are now getting out the blocks as early as possible to head it off.

i.e. Europe has the upper hand in those respects and it will strengthen some more (relatively). So let's hope Merkel and others have some wisdom to maximize the mutual upsides, not make it worse further down the road.

If Putin was in a position of strength and security the Kremlin would not be proposing radical reforms to restructure Russia's policy, behavior and practices in order to make up with Europe and get his markets, economy, finances and currency back.

It's a great idea. See for ten years how this Russian emulation of the EU and democratic development in Russia work out and if it's looking good you can start talking. IMHO, the fucking saddest part of all of this is that the United States and Russia have so very much in common and should be the very best of allies and friends.

These two nations have aboundant resources, a mutual moral basis based in Christianity, and histories of overcoming internal and external strife with resolve and bravery.   WW2 was won as much by the USSR/Russia as America.  Both are struggling with the evils of socialism and the emerging police state.  Both have so much to offer the other...

Am I really the only one that sees America and Russia as wrongly embittered brothers foolishly harming themselves and each other over stale and inconsistent ideological strategies of division vilely construed by their greedy embedded little oligarchies?

Yes, this question was asked of Boris some time before the promoted conflicts way back when he had time to regularly post for fun, and the question posed to him was something like, why can't the good people of Russia band together as the family of good people they all are, east meets west to go north and kick the banksters and all the greedy evil money changers off the planet, so the world can get along fine without them?

Once all the free nations of the world will be a US colony, the need for a country-vassals no longer. After that, the United States will begin to destroy their vassals and make these countries their new and next colony.

Watched the entire series on AHC (American Heros Channel/) last night, entitled "Nazis, the Evolution of Evil".  Interesting how Hitler used this same warning (Russia now calling on Europe to abandon the US for financing)  to the Germans in the late 20s when the fortunes of the Nazi party were faltering because of  the new found German prosperity in the roaring twenties (after the Weimar Hyperinflation fiasco in 1923. )

He warned that Germany was relying on western (US) loans for its false prosperity. Sure enough, according to this TV documenatry, when the  October 23  1929 US stock market crashed, it sucked Germany down with it as the loans were called, and Hitler looked like a genius for predicting it, and the subsequent depression revived Hitler's party.

Well, if Russia stopped Ukraine occupation project, back up to it's borders and left Crimea alone. Than EU could back down sanctions and talk to Russia. Till that time comes... it's crashing RUB and that very funny union they have created where:

  1. Kazakhstan stops electricity supply to Russia due to ruble devaluation
  2. Russia bans products of nine Belarusian meat-packing companies

1. Kazakhstan stopped electricity supply to Russia due to ruble? Yes or no? YES

Read it:

Kazakhstan stopped feeding the Russian electricity grids it was serving as of 24 Nov 2014. The reason is the devaluation the Russian ruble, Novosti-Kazakhstan news agency reports. According to Almasadam Satkaliyev, chairman of the board of directors of the Samruk-Energo Joint Stock Company, the electricity supply was stopped “because of the devaluation. It became unprofitable for our [power] stations. The loss of this market is a serious matter.”

It really comes down to this....

How much is Russia willing to bribe the bankers/ceos and politicians of the major Euro-esk/UN nations in europe to dump the dollar?

The people in the determining positions of power in these nations have no loyalty to any nation (not even their own) their only loyalty is to the dopamine receptors in their cranium and the weight of their wallet to fuel their addictions.

Russia could easily sway atleast 30% of the Euro-Nations to reform their economic trade agreements to exclude the U.S.

this would undoubtedly spark a war, because it would amount to a trade sanction (by the world) against the U.S. , which lets face it , at this point is probably a justifiable measure.

Oh, I'm happy to teach you democracy. You do not know and do not understand what democracy is. Because you live in the mode of the military-police dictatorship of the United States, where the monopoly on power held by one of the ruling party. I mean, the party of big capital. Everything else - Democrats, Republicans, change in the role of puppet presidents - it's just a show to deceive the stupid crowd.

- So, lesson one: People define the boundaries, not boundaries define people.
- Lesson Two: The will of the people is not dependent on whether you like it or not.
- Lesson Three: Democracy can not be "not sovereign", as there can be "not sovereign" will of the people.
- Lesson Four: Western observers were invited to a referendum in the Crimea, but you refused to send observers. How Come? Because you know exactly what the will of the people of Crimea, contrary to the interests of Washington.
- Lesson Five: If you think that a referendum was held in the Crimea "at gunpoint", then what about the illegal and no democratic elections Poroshenko, which were held at gunpoint?
- Lesson Six: If you think that a referendum was held in the Crimea "at gunpoint", then why are you so afraid to hold a second referendum in the Crimea, but under the auspices of the UN?
Who's stopping you spend second referendum in the Crimea, where there is no war,  under the auspices of the UN?
You do not want to do any referendum in the Crimea. Because you are afraid to publish the results.
This is not surprising - because you are liars and because the liars are always afraid of the truth!

Fer Christ's sake, don't, all you need is a democracy that enacts human rights, in law, and actually applies it in practice and you have the basis for a functional State people can at least tolerate and put up with even if it goes of the rails over time. You then have a viable basis for people's popular rebellion based reforms if it doesn't legally monitor and reform itself.

Banks are the vector of national disease, and that disease is debt, and bribery buying politicians is how that disease grows. Without a public means and the will of the public to gut and destroy a misbehaving banks, at any time, the system is guaranteed to destabilize, revolt and fail.

The US Constitution is the most stark example of such failure.

Such laws are fine ...until an elected government decides to change, repeal or ignore them. Then what? Whereas a Constitution is the supreme law of the land which cannot be changed without explicit approval of "the people".

"The US Constitution is the most stark example of such failure"

No. The failure has been in not having a fully independent Constitutional supervision process to prevent abuse by elected governments and to impose severe penalties on those who attempt to do so.

inside the EU it's only in the UK that an elected parliament can change, repeal or ignore whatever it likes

this has nothing to do with the fact that for most of Europe, any overarching common constitution is not an option. thanks, but no, thanks

You omit to mention that the EU Constitution was not drafted by "the people" but by a French socialist, political slimeball. It does not contain the sort of supreme safeguards that should be present in a proper constitution. It was written to support the current Brussels modus operandi and future United States of Europe.

It makes a nice doorstop.

Apart from that, you are right to say that Britain does not have a written Constitution, but if you ever asked British politicians about that, they'd say we do (!!!)

Happy New Year :-)

I don't see how this would change the most important problem the EU has, Debt.

Is China all of a sudden going to be importers of EU products to such a degree they can cover all the debt accumulated to date?

What we have here is Russia and china are in serious trouble and looking for a way out, just like everybody else.

After the collapse then let's talk.

You've got to start somewhere. Moving to a sound banking system with honest balance sheets and a currency backed by metal is a better bet than a future of certain debt backed by a printing press.

Dump the US bully that wants to start a war/sanctions with anyone it doesn't like at the drop of the hat? And will kill people going to weddings who might be in the same area as a tourrrorrrrist?

Hmmmmm, difficult question that.....

Case in point - Turkey's Erdogan who was doing everything he could for his zino-masters until they tried to dump him last year in another color revolution and install his even more pliable political nemesis. Erdogan survived an he's pissed. New Russian pipeline to go via Turkey. No more on-site jihadi training by CIA / Mossad. Expect more consequences.

A sobering thought that ZH would be better advised to follow up on rather than talk about Eurasian vampire's ball is the following :

http://www.theguardian.com/world/2015/jan/04/us-russia-era-nuclear-rivalry

Here we see the REAL arms race hotting up.

And that means : Back to the USSR !

Because NATO seems to think it has the right to surround Russia and break treaties, that's the cause of the "hotting up" nothing else.

It's a slam dunk. A done deal. No way in hell is Europe going to pass up the opportunity of an aristocracies lifetime by sticking with the US. Russia connects China and the EU. Imagine for one freaking moment what kind of industrialization, commercial real estate, mining, transportation and population growth that could lead too. The US and the banksters of FRAUD are toast M'Fers. Yes Q99X2 is back in his California nest and back to college tomorrow. Fuck the cold weather. People have to be crazy to live in that frozen tundra.

I say that any economic union must be predicated upon minimal credit between nations so as to avoid a massive debt build up with its ensuing consequences of economic, political and social imbalances.

If unfettered movement of goods, services, debt and people is allowed then it smells like a NWO coming to us from the other end.
