.

Sadly, the French will now learn first hand what Americans have been learning non-stop since 9-11, to defend their freedoms they will be forced to surrender their freedoms...

because "they [whoever they is] hate you for your freedoms."

Hmmm, the French (by law) seem..."exceptional" ;-)

Artistic Freedom

France has a vibrant art scene but one restricted in various ways by hate speech laws and by interference from public authorities.

Racial hatred and other discriminatory and violent language >>>in artistic work<<< with a >>>potentially large audience<<< is criminalised as a “public expression offence”. Many artists have been brought to Court for this offence which lies mainly in Article 24 of the 1881 Law on Press Freedom.[4] "

Ok. lets just stop right there...the STATE...passed a law in 1881 criminalizing a "public expression" in artistic work? And the parameters are, only if it has the potential to reach a large audience...otherwise its ok? Talk about a hole big enough to drive an obese bureaucrat through on a flatbed OR fitting his truck & ass along with his house, through the eye of a needle.

Continuing...

"This offence is particularly serious since it is punishable by five years’ imprisonment and a €45,000 fine. Government officials, civil society groups, and individuals have repeatedly sued artists for defamation and incitement to violence."

Sounds like the lawyers are making a killing.

"The Code of Intellectual Property protects artistic works whatever their content and merit, and protects their authors. However,...'

Apparently there's some French fine print...

"...artistic freedom of expression can be restricted by various authorities – Ministry of Culture, Superior Council of Audio-visual (Conseil supérieur de l’audiovisuel, CSA) – whose decisions may limit not only the dissemination of works, but also their production (TV, films). The CSA for example, whose members are political appointments, is regularly exposed to pressure from the public, elected officials, or political authorities to censor artistic works."

So, its like a code of law that is not a code, until they want it to be a code, then its a code, until an unelected "appointee" decides its not a code.

Got it, good grief...lol.

So I guess a cartoon of Mohammed buggering Hollande would be completely out of the question in France?

It would be fine in the US unless you put blaceface on Hollande.

'Whoever they is" is exactly the correct question to ask.  Mrs. Russian M is the middle of a Russian weblog fight club.  I told that I will fight for her but she shoved me off and said that I don't know Cyrillic well enough to make a fight.(true about the Cyrillic)  She won't say what they are fighting about but whatever it is quite a go around.  It is Russian Christmas.  It might be Russian Festivus.  That woman is not happy and it is not my fault this time.

Someone was wrong on the internet is all she said.  They must have been really, really wrong!  We've all been wrong a time or two but whatever this is has her foot moving back and forth.  I know my wife and when you see that then it means that she is not happy about something and she's right in the middle of her cycle so it is not related to that.  Someone really pissed her off and she is fighting back.  I am going to go put my ZH ballcap on her.

I will keep an eye on this but I will probably never know what it was all about.  For all I know it is about breastfeeding but it made her mad as a wet hen.

As I stated before "cartoons make the best propoganda"

Whether or not this pissed on the towel heads I don't know for sure as for the Israelis I have been posting that nuttyahoo is barking really loud about whats going on in palestine... so flip a coin pissed off muzzies or pissed off moosadies ????

In all the years of watching the jews ruin the world and behind the scenes funding and creating these mohamidite nut jobs over there either way this all boils down to israel tearing apart the ME for its "gains"

US vetos palestinian statehood palestine ramps up the rhetoric and joins ICC nuttyahoo says there will be no trials of IDF nutbags so on and so on now this as france leads the way on votes for palestine ...coincidence???  maybe but then again..... ya know what they say about them there coincidences ;)

As a further lesson heres an explanation of propoganda:

The use of propoganda is meant to bring a complex issue to light via simpler means not through lies or deception but through images and language the "common" man might understand.  To "propogandize" a lie is to simplify that lie in the same fashion and therefore becomes the ultimate poison, the ultimate lie.

The use of the word has become poisoned by the great liars, as with virtually all modern propoganda for the jews are masters of the art of "spin doctoring".

Yesterday was Atypical day in half a dozen bars and market places and villages in a dozen countries where the rule of law and social structures/fabric has been decimated by sociopaths like John McStain for and on behalf of the OVERLORDS.

It is not too difficult to comprehend that the USSA/UK/NeoCON/Israeli/Saudi/BanksterCorp Open Policy of inflicting Serfdom on nations of FOLKS has created a breeding ground for RADICALS.

“Religion, a mediaeval form of unreason, when combined with modern weaponry becomes a real threat to our freedoms. This religious totalitarianism has caused a deadly mutation in the heart of Islam and we see the tragic consequences in Paris today. I stand with Charlie Hebdo, as we all must, to defend the art of satire, which has always been a force for liberty and against tyranny, dishonesty and stupidity. ‘Respect for religion’ has become a code phrase meaning ‘fear of religion.’ Religions, like all other ideas, deserve criticism, satire, and, yes, our fearless disrespect.” –Salman Rushdie

Thank you, Mr. Rushdie!

My hope is that even attacks like those will not result in increased surveilleance or other extreme measures. And I have some reasons to hope

- enough people here in europe know that we are already spied upon too much, from both domestic and... foreign agencies

- enough know what special insult it is to make drawings of the Prophet Muhammed to believers of Islam. The "special" about it is how likely this will provoke violence from overeager, misguided idiots (or people that pose as such)

- hence enough know that there needs to be a balance in all that, in the sense that you can't expect total security from the state. Insulting Islam insults lots of people. If I went to Haarlem, NY, in the 80's and I shouted "NIGGER!", people would think me mad to complain I'd need a police cordon around me, immediately, forever. Or after burning one American Flag after the other on the main street of Somewhere, XY, USA

balance. Those were heinous crimes, yes. But the state is NOT there to protect you from every act of provocation you commit AND guarantee your full security. There IS place for personal courage, in a truly open society. For example from the few policemen guardind the next cartoonist that is misguided enough to draw what this one did

a truly open, free society is NOT a completely safe society. sometimes it has to bring justice (not vengeance) after the crime has been done, and even expect it will be repeated, and repeated, and repeated

complete freedom from consequences of stupidity or rashness is not really freedom anymore, at all

We already had higher levels of terrorism, here, in living memory (including mine). Bombs blow, people are killed... we nevertheless refuse to be impressed by violence, the worst argument of all

the best way to fight extremism is... moderation. firm moderation

AHHH.

I was as stupidly optimistic as you, once.

"My hope is that even attacks like those will not result in increased surveilleance or other extreme measures. And I have some reasons to hope"

Hope in one hand, and shit in the other, and see which one gets full first.

HOPIUM is a deleterious drug, my friend.

Who bought the oil that the Muslims had? Who sold them their arms? Who radicalized them by bombing them for the past 20 years? WHO pulled off the 9/11 attacks? WHO is telling YOU that it is the 'fact' that they 'hate our freedoms'?

Snorting cocaine, and living with (and 'knowing' in the Biblical sense) pink-haired strippers, and going to bars... Mohammed Atta sure was a 'devout Muslim', wasn't he?

Sadly, this will get played up as a "Freedom of Speech, these are our cherished Western Values" issue when it really isn't.  In France, for example, you go to jail for publically denying the Holocaust or the Armenian Genocide.  Not exactly freedom of speech now, is it?

It's french satire magazine. I don't know anything about it specifically, but if they weren't a thorn in the side of the current socialist-in-charge of France, I'd be surprised. In that light, this is likely a well-planned attack that serves multiple ends.

It was more than the cartoons, they're just the cover.

Thanks for confirming my thorn suspicion. I also think you may have misunderstood my post. I am definitely FOR freedom of speech, especially in the context of satire towards regimes. I also doubt their religious satire was limited to Islam, there's just too much good material to go around.

What I tried to say was the cartoons are the public narrative for a more heinous attack on freedom of speech as a whole, not some abstract notion of disrespect, a cartoon, for someone it's unlikely an Imam or three could pick out of a lineup.

I find disrespect of religious icons distasteful, there is along history of persecution for it throughout history. Could it have been extremists - absolutely. I am saying this has the acrid taste and foul smell of something more.

Popular speech & press needs no protection, it never has or ever will.

I get the underlying tone, all nation-states use these types of events to expand their intrusive footprint, that has never changed either or ever will.

The false choice has always been (in my view) a cop on every street corner asking for your papers OR take your chances at an untimely death without the suffocating "protection of the state".

I choose the option unspoken, to kill the motherfucker who is trying to kill me for saying whatever the hell I want to say.

Its an option ;-)
