Based on what I have seen, they were trying to provoke a reaction. If you engage in that kind of activity, for whatever reason, it is grossly negligent not to take adequate measures to protect your people. And I would say having a patrol car parked outside is not adequate if you are insulting the religion of Islam.
I am not saying anyone deserved this. But there is a certain amount of hubris involved. This is not the first time something like this has happened. good post wb7, +1. I just want to add the obvious, that in a 'free' country the freedom to write,draw or sculpt should be censorship free - it defines a perspective of 'freedom'. In countries that blatently censor, world disaproval is engaged [formally the ussr, east germany, currently china n.korea etc..] , global censorship & honest reporters in jail is surely not the answer ! and as an aside, we can see censorship at work in the western press already [ferguson, fukushima, new orleans, etc....] - either self imposed, or top down. I do not want creative arts, or media to need a gov aproval certificate ! And legislation using this topic as a precedent is dangerously open to manipulation by TPTB.
