France Update: Explosion Near Mosque, Policeman Shot In Paris, Countrywide Manhunt For Suspects
Following yesterday's shocking murder of 12 people at the Charlie Hebdo headquarters, there has been much confusion and many rapidly moving parts in the hours that followed as authorities try to catch the two remaining killers, the 32 and 34-year old Kouachi brothers, after earlier the youngest of three French suspects turned himself in to police after, as BFM TV reported, he saw his in social media. The arrest was confirmed by an official at the Paris prosecutor's office said. Several people linked to two other suspected attackers were also in custody, the news agency AFP reported. The manhunt for the two remaining suspects goes on.
Indicative of the confusion and false information is the following report from NBC Nightly News which turned out to be fake:

How did the rumor spread to the very top of the food chain? From NBC: "Earlier Wednesday, two senior U.S. counterterrorism officials told NBC News that one of the suspects in the attack had been killed and that two others were in custody. However, the officials later said the information that was the basis of that account could not be confirmed."
What we do know about the two remaining suspects as the countrywide manhunt deepens is that they were said to have robbed a service station in the north of France. According to BBC, they stole food and petrol, firing shots as they struck at the roadside stop near Villers-Cotterets in the Aisne region, French media report.
According to the manager of the service station that was robbed on the RN2 road in Aisne at about 10:30 (09:30 GMT), the attackers fit the description of the two men, and were heavily armed with Kalashnikovs and rocket-propelled grenade launchers.
Earlier in the day, a policewoman was killed in a shootout in southern Paris on Thursday, triggering searches in the area as the manhunt widened, Reuters reports.
Police sources could not immediately confirm a link with the killings at Charlie Hebdo. Montrouge mayor Pierre Brossollette said the policewoman and a colleague went to the site to deal with a traffic accident. A car stopped and a man got out and shot at them before fleeing.
Witnesses said the shooter fled in a Renault Clio car. Police sources said he had been wearing a bullet-proof vest and had a handgun and assault rifle. However, one police officer at the scene told Reuters the man did not appear to fit the bill of the Charlie Hebdo shooters.
Live French television showed around a dozen police dressed in protective wear and helmets massed outside a building near the scene of the shoot-out. A second person was seriously injured in the attack in the suburb of Montrouge, after which the gunman fled.
Finally, a backlash in France may be forming when as Reuters also reported, an explosion rocked a kebab shop next to a mosque in Villefrance-sur-Saone in eastern France early on Thursday morning, a police source told Reuters.
"The window was blow out by an explosion in the night. The kebab shop was adjacent to a mosque," the source said, adding it appeared to be a criminal act. French media reports said there were no wounded.

This is just my two cents. The French have received a bad rap over the years, when I've always noticed that their military is actually pretty decent. I'm guessing that a lot of this stems from the same possible source (Germans circa WW2), because the Poles are in the same boat, and their military units are also pretty squared away. The French military leadership pre-WW2 was certainly guilty of fighting the last war (WW1---static positions, etc., and that's why they wasted their efforts on the Maginot Line). The French suffer what we in the US currently suffer from, incredibly shitty political leadership, with the exception that they've been under poor leadership for far longer. We are rapidly catching up though. The WH just criticized the paper for the cartoons. Really? If that isn't caving to musloid sensitivities, what is?

The French military is very, very good. Dassault Aviation produces fighter jets second to none. The French protective service for their president is quiet, low key, and extremely effective; they haven't lost anyone, much less degenerated into the Gong Show our SS has.

You are right about the poor French military leadership in WW2, but not about the Maginot Line which only fault was to be too short (ending at the Belgian frontier for political reasons). It resisted a long time after the defeat.
Something is to add:
The strength of Hitler's army, particularly the Air Force, was largely underestimated. Nobody was really prepared against the German war machine. In 1939 and 1940 France was let alone (apart from only 8 British divisions, which succeeded to quickly re-embark at Dunkirk thanks to the sacrifice of the soldiers of the 1st French Army of the North).
France was let alone facing a nazi-fanaticized country with a population of 80 million (vs. 40 million in France), a particularly well prepared war-industry, and an air superiority of 5 vs. 1.
At the same time the “US ally” refused to sell planes on credit to France!
Contrary to what has often been said, and is a result of the Nazi propaganda of that time, and the neo-cons hatred in 2003, the German advance (Blitzkrieg) encountered serious resistance from the French troops. In the six week Battle of France, from May 10 to June 22, 1940, the French lost, in military personnel alone, 260,000 wounded and 108,000 killed. A total of 368,000 casualties in six weeks is not something to pass off lightly.
This is 5 times more than the losses of the American army in three months of battles in Normandy in 1944 (21000), and nearly the same amount than the US deaths in 7 months of WW1 (116700)!
It is the air superiority (over 1,000 Stuka bombers knocked out the troops defending Sedan) and the intelligent use of the German panzers that broke the defences and made ineluctable the defeat.
Since WW2, air superiority is generally the winning key of all battles …
