With the number of college graduates working minimum wage jobs nearly 71% higher than it was a decade ago, and the average graduate leaving college with $29,400 in debt (crushing their hopes of leveraging up to buy that American Dream-creating house), President Obama has unleashed a double whammy of ideas in the last few days. Reducing mortgage insurance and cutting down-payment restrictions for FHA loans (i.e. providing huge leverage to segments of society to repeat the mistakes of the last housing bubble); and now, as The LA Times reports, President Obama says he is rolling out a plan to make two years of community college free, or nearly so, to every student across the country. Because it's "fair"?

Obama’s announcement comes ahead of a visit Friday to a community college and technical center in Knoxville, Tenn., as part of a trip designed to preview his policy plans for 2015.

Obama said a world-class education starts with children, but that adults need training, too. “It’s not just for kids, we also have to make sure that everybody has the opportunity to constantly train themselves for better jobs, better wages, better benefits.”
The America’s College Promise proposal could save eligible students $3,800 a year in tuition, the White House said.
According to the White House, here are the requirements for the program:
What students have to do: Students must attend community college at least half-time, maintain a 2.5 GPA, and make steady progress toward completing their program.
What community colleges have to do: Community colleges will be expected to offer programs that are either 1) academic programs that fully transfer credits to local public four-year colleges and universities, or 2) occupational training programs with high graduation rates and lead to in-demand degrees and certificates. Community colleges must also adopt promising and evidence-based institutional reforms to improve student outcomes.
What the federal government has to do: Federal funding will cover three-quarters of the average cost of community college. Participating states will be expected to contribute the remaining funds necessary to eliminate the tuition for eligible students.
The president is expected to make a formal announcement Friday

In order to swip a product over a scanner degree. I went ballistic on a cashier about two weeks ago. Asked her if she needed a quicker scanner or whether she could move faster. Waiting in line for 20 minutes is unexceptable. I refuse to use self-check out lines, it removes someones job.
When I was 17, worked at a cash register, punched in numbers on a keyboard. These dumbfucks are less productive in time scanning products. IMHO. It's all about inventory control.

I used to not use self-check out lines but then I asked myself, self, do you really want to interact with someone who may or may not have the ability to scan products, take money, and give change?

I do not use self-checkouts and avoid ATM's in favor of human tellers. Why? Because unlike people, you can't hold a machine liable for error.

I graduated from a CC and have had many years in which I grossed $1M+. What CC taught me was just how much smarter I am than the average bear (ht to Yogi) and removed all doubt that I should be the HMFIC and not a worker bee. I went on to start several businesses (learning along the way that starting, and then selling businesses is far more profitable than running one) and now live quite comfortably in my own 3000sqft basement ( the DW lives in the upper 5500 sqft).

Well that sucks, I justed dished out $2k for my wife to go to a Community College this semester. Is there a retroactive feature in which I will be paid back the 10k I spent for her to get her degree? Of course not, I paid out of pocket, no debt relief or getting free monies.

My son is on his third free AS degree (Marine Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology and now Machining Technology). Each degree takes less credits because he has all of the pre-reqs and humanities out of the way and his GPA gets better (he has a 3.8). I guess now he can save up his 9/11 GI Bill for his BS degrees.......why work when he gets a stipend and his class expenses are all paid up with no debt?

Community college is attractive to a lot of people due to the fact that you can transfer to a 4 year college and save money. What happens when kids decide not to go to traditional freshman and sophomore years at the 4 year school and get their education for free? That is already happening and is causing tuition to raise at the 4 year college. Maybe 4 year colleges will deny transfer of credits from community college once their freshman and sophomore enrollment fades even more. Then the 2 year degree may become even more worthless unless you are going to be a welder or HVAC certified.

Two thoughts:
1) Loads of Juco's are just about out of money. That's certainly the case out here in CA. City College of San Francisco (CCSF) provides a beautiful example. Their mismangement of money (read: union theft) was so out of control that they were taken over by the state last year. An independent auditor discovered that at one point, 92% of the school's revenue was going to wages and pensions. lol My guess is that obama is doing this as a means of funneling some federal cheese their way to keep the scam going for a while longer.
2) My son will graduate Juco this summer. Can I get a refund of his last two years?

When I did my physics degree I was given free student accomodation, annual spending money grant and all tuition free by the local authority. Didn't cost me a penny. That was in the days when only 10% or so went on to university. I think that is a better system.

Oh, and free is never "FREE". Someone has to pay for it. And, while I think an educated public is a good thing, and am willing to pay taxes for it, I certainly don't think a community college degree is needed for everyone. What additional skills are they going to get from community college? There are already too many liberal arts degrees out there.
