Savage Slaughter In Paris Underlines West and Freedom Itself Vulnerable

The savage attacks on the satirical magazine, Charlie Hebdo, in Paris leaving 12 dead yesterday shows how vulnerable western societies and economies are to the twin threats of terrorism and war.

The attacks pose threats to our already under attack freedoms - freedom of the press, freedom of privacy, freedom of religion, freedom of conscience, freedom of speech, expression and thought.

Parisians proclaim they are "Not Afraid" in protest last night after attack

It poses risks to the open societies that have been regained in recent years - in terms of freedom of movement of goods, services and people in the EU and internationally. This in itself poses real risks to already fragile economies in France, the EU and internationally.

The concern is that this may be the opening salvo in a new wave of conflict between NATO states and supra-national and radicalised Islamic groups across the Middle East.

Eyewitnesses say and photos and videos show the hooded attackers brandishing AK-47's operated with the clinical coolness of professional assassins or battled hardened military men. Although they have not been captured at this point French authorities have identified them as French men, possibly of Algerian extraction and they are being linked to Al Queda in Yemen.

As the attack began, it is alleged that they shouted to bystanders, “Tell the media that this is al-Qaeda in the Yemen.” Other reports say that they said this to a female employee as she left the building with her child, as they entered the building.

For the five million Muslims living in France, over 7.7% of the population, and for Muslims across Europe it promises to be an uncomfortable few months as a wave of distrust, hatred and anger sweeps through the wider society and intelligence agencies, the far right and governments seek to exploit the attack for their own purposes.

The attacks have brought more attention than could possibly have been expected on the book "Submission" by Michel Houellebecq which was featured on the cover of yesterday's Charlie Hebdo magazine and the apparent motivation for the violence.

The book is reminiscent of the horrible 1930's anti-Semitic propaganda or the alarmist Cold War slogans such as "The Russians are coming." It fear mongers and portrays a France in 2022 which has become an Islamic theocracy when a fringe Islamic party seizes control of the state through the democratic process in similar fashion to the Nazi party in 1933.

It is silly and will never happen but worse, it is prejudiced, Islamophobic and anti-Muslim and designed to create fear of Muslims - the majority of whom are normal, peace loving human beings.

It is particularly tragic that France should have been targeted by terrorists given that they voted in favour of Palestine taking a seat at the International Criminal Court only in December.

France has been an ambiguous NATO member in recent years. They are in the process of finishing the production of two battleships which were ordered by Russia before the Ukraine crisis began.

There is a risk of refraining to the simplistic and dangerous narrative of the fabled “Clash of Civilisations” that arms companies, militarists and terrorists globally are intent on provoking.

We must break the vicious loop - militarists use terrorism to justify war and terrorists use war to justify terrorism. We are slow learners that violence does not work and only breeds more violence.

Some would use terrorism to close borders, others to promote war and a further erosion of our civil liberties and civil rights. Instead, we should seek to address the root causes of terrorism which is poverty and injustice.

Nearly four years of war in Syria has created a staggering humanitarian crisis, with a huge one-third of the country’s original 23 million inhabitants displaced and more than three million of those registered as refugees in other countries.

“It is like the seven plagues of the Bible falling on these poor people,” Jan Egeland, the secretary general of the Norwegian Refugee Council, said yesterday.

Perpetual war in the Middle East and North Africa will lead to even more suffering in the region. Potential war with Russia does not bear thinking about.

The consequences of war are innocent victims, poverty and injustice. This is a breeding ground for the terrorists of today and tomorrow.

Unless as a race we change direction and there are always alternatives - the prospect for greater instability in the form of terrorism and war in the near future is very high.

Hierarchy of drives

1 kill for an idea

2 kill for personal connection

3 kill for gain

4 die for gain

5 die for an idea

6 die for personal connection

Passion requirement declines as you move down the list.

An apparently significant number of Muslims seem comfortable living in the top of the list. Few westerners even consider killing or self-sacrifice outside of their immediate family. Their station in life doesn't generally require it, and there is no church telling them they are only secure if they are comfortable with these drives, and ready to embrace them completely.

These complicated situations and "hurt inventory" apportionings can never be dealt with in the macro. Even with responsive government...takes time to turn things around and muzzle "those who wish to spend public money to beat furiners".

Best you can do? Work harder to insure *you* won't be the victim. That's something you *do* have some control over.

How much easier would our task be if those two nuts had been quickly killed by five shotgun blasts? So sad ...

Not blaming the victim....but those editors *knew* they were on someone's list. So nutjob arrival was an easy bet....

And if the French government frowns on readily accessible shotguns? Well, you break the law. That's what it takes - so you do it.

Letting things get this far is a mistake. Prevention is always cheaper. And who knows, Hebdo might have been even more outrageous if those shotguns had been scattered throughout their offices for years. Yeah there's a risk with our activities - but we're ready?

In areas where the "disgruntled count" is high enough - you use a dead man's switch with explosives. The mobs of roaches don't get to leave.

Do that enough times even an islamic learns......

The savage attacks on the satirical magazine, Charlie Hebdo, in Paris leaving 12 dead yesterday shows how vulnerable western societies and economies are to the twin threats of terrorism and war.

Thinking like this is more dangerous than terrorists. Why? It contains so many "common assumptions", some of which are false, and some of which are not what the sentence implies.

#1: You are vastly more likely to be killed by a car accident than so-called "terrorism" (talk about a bogus and constantly shifting concept), and more likely to be killed by lightning than terrorism. So yes, western societies are vulnerable... but what they are vulnerable to are... their own governments, who point to these actions as justifications for enslavement and abuse of all mankind (their own "citizens" first and foremost), and also to misdirect massive quantities of wealth to killing enormous numbers of innocents. The fact is, in the grand scheme of life on earth, terrorists and terrorism themselves are vanishing insignificance. If you disagree, you better start an organization promoting climate change, specifically any change that will reduce the completely natural phenomenon known as lightning, tornadoes, excessive rain (flooding), etc.

#2: Exactly what are reasonable responses when people from other nations kill hundreds or thousands of your innocent neighbors and [extended] family? Don't answer quickly, because that is not an easy question to answer rationally. While I personally never think it appropriate to kill innocents (in retaliation or response), exactly who are these innocents in western nations? Those who pay huge percentages of their every paycheck to finance their own terrorist organizations?

Who do I mean? I mean anyone who kills innocents with (appropriately named) predator drones or equivalent. Are these people innocent? Are people who hire hit men innocent? Really? True, some only finance these atrocities because they too will be targeted if they don't (by the predators in "their own" government). However, they are a minority. According to most polls, most people FAVOR these actions. Which means, THEY are outright voluntary [financiers of] terrorism themselves.

#3: Terrorism and war are not twin threats. Terrorism is vanishingly insignificant in the grand scheme of things (not to victims and families of course, but that applies to the victims and families of lightning strike victims too). WAR, which is practiced by the state (the government), is indeed horrific. And yet, most people fund and support them without a second thought... often without a first thought.

-----

The attacks pose threats to our already under attack freedoms - freedom of the press, freedom of privacy, freedom of religion, freedom of conscience, freedom of speech, expression and thought.

Was this sentence purposely twisted on purpose. I don't know. Is the threat the author refers to "western governments" who take advantage of just about anything and everything to tighten the screws on their population and kill more innocents abroad? Or is the threat that some nuts with loose-screws, who were propagandized by religion predators in very similar ways that most people are propagandized by government predators?

-----

It poses risks to the open societies that have been regained in recent years - in terms of freedom of movement of goods, services and people in the EU and internationally. This in itself poses real risks to already fragile economies in France, the EU and internationally.

Who are you blaming this on, author? The predators-DBA-governments that actually restrain the freedoms and destroy economies? Or the terrorists? Remember, events like these are no reason whatsoever to justify reductions of freedoms - just the opposite (otherwise YOU help the terrorists, who are the predators-DBA-governments (and these screw-loose predator-thugs too)).

-----

The concern is that this may be the opening salvo in a new wave of conflict between NATO states and supra-national and radicalised Islamic groups across the Middle East.

Anyone who actually believes this is justified... deserves to be targeted and wiped off the face of the earth. Anyone who is willing to take actions that are guaranteed to slaughter thousands if not millions of innocents in response to actions take by three human beings... is much, much, vastly worse than these three human beings. If three human being took these actions, three human beings deserve to be hunted down and wiped out. PERIOD. And to extend this principle to other situations, if the so-called "leader" of a nation unjustly orders an individual or several individuals killed, then that individual human being and his agents who carried out that order deserve to be wiped out, but the notion that a whole freaking war must be fought between thousands or millions of jack-booted morons with guns killing each other (along with untold innocents)... in so evil as to be unforgivable that the vast majority of human beings allow their brains to support such obvious evil thought.

-----

For the five million Muslims living in France, over 7.7% of the population, and for Muslims across Europe it promises to be an uncomfortable few months as a wave of distrust, hatred and anger sweeps through the wider society and intelligence agencies, the far right and governments seek to exploit the attack for their own purposes.

If anyone attempts to take advantage of events like this as justification for being even worse, larger-scale terrorists... DO NOT OBEY. At the risk of being obvious where obvious is necessary:

Every individual is responsible for his own actions.

Do not fight in the wars and conflicts. Do not twiddle joysticks that fly drones and kill people. STOP. And permanently shun and disassociate yourselves with any friend, family, associate or acquaintance who supports or takes part in such craven actions as mass murder.

Also...

Every individual is responsible ONLY for his own actions.

-----

The book is reminiscent of the horrible 1930's anti-Semitic propaganda or the alarmist Cold War slogans such as "The Russians are coming." It fear mongers and portrays a France in 2022 which has become an Islamic theocracy when a fringe Islamic party seizes control of the state through the democratic process in similar fashion to the Nazi party in 1933.

So what's the point here? That it is perfectly A-OH-KAY for predators who look a bit more like you to completely enslave and abuse everyone in your little region of planet earth? But not for some other predators?

How about we get to the nitty gritty? How about we end this squabble and just stop pretending human predators are not predators just because of the clothes they wear, or background they have, or quality of propaganda they spew?

How about we all stop supporting ALL human predators, first and foremost the most vile, dangerous and destructive human predators, namely the predators-that-be AKA predators-DBA-government and predators-DBA-centralbanks.

Until humans do that... they are supporters of human predators, and deserve no escape from the worst of consequences. Does that mean you?

-----

It is silly and will never happen but worse, it is prejudiced, Islamophobic and anti-Muslim and designed to create fear of Muslims - the majority of whom are normal, peace loving human beings.

Authors should think before they write. And then they should read what the write before they publish. An author should look at every sentence and ask themselves, Do I really mean what I said? Or am I just trying to create a fuzzy feeling or impression of some kind (by misrepresenting the facts)?

In this sentence, for example, what does the phrase "normal, peace-loving human beings" mean? That "normal" human beings "love peace"? Seriously? Where is the evidence for that? In almost every survey I've seen, people support killing the crap out of all sorts of innocent people... as long as they personally don't have to take the risk of wandering around in foreign lands with weapons. As far as I can tell, "normal" means PRO-WAR and PRO-SLAUGHTER of innocents in the process. As far as I can tell, almost everyone buys into the notion that if some 1, 3, 23 or 732 individuals in a geographical area (or perhaps in some religion) do something horrible, well... that is justification to support killing thousands, tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands, millions of innocent human beings in that region or religion or ideology.

As long as THAT is "normal", it is difficult to support any notion that "normal" people don't deserve to be wiped out wholesale in the most horrific ways. But I have to be consistent, don't I? Yes I do. So while maybe "normal" people do deserved to be wiped out wholesale... maybe even the majority of human beings on planet earth... it is not justified to also kill off "abnormal" human beings who ACTUALLY believe in justice and peace. Who ACTUALLY believe that justification only exists to wipe out those individuals who do harm others (or finance and support those actions). How to accomplish this is another matter, and sometimes not an easy matter. The only obvious starting point is... to only target those you know support slaughter of innocents, even if that leaves a great many vile predators alive.

-----

It is particularly tragic that France should have been targeted by terrorists given that they voted in favor of Palestine taking a seat at the International Criminal Court only in December.

Non-sequitur. That had nothing to do with the motivations of those murderers. Besides, the notion that whole countries "have a position" is so completely absurd. In fact, that kind of thinking causes many problems.

-----

There is a risk of refraining to the simplistic and dangerous narrative of the fabled “Clash of Civilizations” that arms companies, militarists and terrorists globally are intent on provoking.

A risk? Ya think? How about "a certainty".

-----

We must break the vicious loop - militarists use terrorism to justify war and terrorists use war to justify terrorism. We are slow learners that violence does not work and only breeds more violence.

That is such a non-serious sentence, pure soundbite without any indication of what a more "enlightened" response would be (for people who have innocent friends and families slaughtered by human predators from afar).

The situation is soooooooo asymmetric! A gigantic military industrial complex slaughters thousands to millions of innocents... and we're supposed to compare that to a few totally screwed up individuals brainwashed by some religious wackos? Shall we revisit what christians did over the millennia? No? Well then, let's be a bit consistent, shall we?

So let's be honest. YES the vicious loop must be broken. But that means YOU and EVERYONE must FIRST pull back and dissolve those militaries. Are you ready to do that? Are you? And keep them inside your borders only for defense? And NOT send them out to slaughter innocents in response to the actions of a few individual murders? Because if you are NOT willing to stop sending your military out to kill people, do not expect screws-loose types to come kill people in your neighborhood from time to time. Though I agree these screws-loose types should target "leaders" who send military to kill their friends and family, I do not agree they are not justified in responding to the mass murder western governments regularly practice. So western people need to kill their own predators in order to stop them from inciting these acts you like to call "terrorism". Will you? No? Then what do your propose?

-----

Some would use terrorism to close borders, others to promote war and a further erosion of our civil liberties and civil rights. Instead, we should seek to address the root causes of terrorism which is poverty and injustice.

Poverty causes terrorism? Nonsense! Paying military to invade and kill thousands to millions causes terrorism. While I'm sure there will ALWAYS be some screws-loose types, and thus always unjustified and senseless murders from time-to-time, the first REQUIREMENT of any plan to end what you call "terrorism" is... to stop invading, stop sending military into offensive actions, to stop killing innocents. If you do NOT include that action, just shut up! Because you are asking innocents to just sit down and accept mass murder without any response. Talk about insane expectations!

-----

Bottom line: The burden and fault is upon everyone who supports and funds (with taxes) any military who invades other regions of the planet. As long as westerners (or easterners, or anyone else) advocates sending military around the world to kill innocents (as a mission, or as a [unintended] consequence), IS a root cause of the problem. And as such, they have nothing to complain about when their friends and family get blown to bits. Sadly the carnage is not limited to those who support and practice murder of innocents.

This pretty much applies anywhere.

An immigrant decides to leave his/her shithole of a country, for a multitude of various reasons, that all boil down to country A being a shithole. It's a shithole because culture fosters it being a shithole.

So they emigrate to a more favorable country, because it is refined, modern, offers economic advantage, etc.

And then proceed to NOT assimilate and to NOT loose the culture that fostered a shithole life back in birth land. And proceed to turn the foster country into the same shithole they fled.

WTF!??!!

I think, regarding Afghanistan, the intent was never to fix it, but to exploit the whole thing for political ends. As you so nicely put it, Trash-can-istan is how Americans have been propagandised to think of it.

I don't think Afghanistan ever invaded another country, but the Afghani people sure as hell resent it when anyone has ever invaded, and 'voice' their anger the only way they can.

Countries are just a way of dividing humanity up into convenient sized groups that can be controlled, with the added advantage that they can then be persuaded to fight each other, instead of going after the sick fucks who run the world.

Religion, likewise.

There's no such thing as good government.

Well, in recent times first the Soviets trashed it, then we did, hence the Trash-can-istan label.

What freedom?
