The Cost Of Obama's "Free" Community College Plan To Taxpayers? $60 Billion
Yesterday, to much shock and dismay, Obama revealed his latest "noble" grand vision: provide a free community college education to millions of folks. Apparently now, far too late, even the community organizer-in-chief realized that with $1.2 trillion in student loans, almost double the total outstanding credit card debt, which as the TBAC warned will rise to a mindblowing $3.3 trillion in one decade all else equal...
... and of which already one third will likely end up unrepad..
... there is simply no way the US economy can grow and absent a major overhaul of the educational system, the Millennials will never be able to take their rightful place as the dynamo of US economic growth.
What is Obama's solution? Another free lunch.

Eric Schultz, the deputy press secretary, said that President Obama would be joined in Knoxville by Vice President Joe Biden and Dr. Jill Biden to announce his proposal to make two years of community college free for all responsible students no matter their age.

And if "$60 billion" is what the president considers free, we dread to think how much it would cost taxpayers if Obama decided to actually to some aggressive wealth redistributing for a change...

Actual benefit? Most community colleges have been dumbed down so much that they are now easier than high school. I had a friend who taught criminal justice part-time. One student complained the tests were too hard, so the adminstration directed him to switch to open book tests. The test wasn't hard for the others, but it took only ONE complaint to change the rules.
But that kid today is Police Commissioner.

Also it isn't 6 billion a year. The student loan bubble is a trillion dollars. Medicare part D was sold as a 400 billion program which ballooned to 700 billion before the ink was dry. The ACA wasn't supposed to add to the deficit. Wrong answer.

So - no means testing at all ? At the very minimum I think they should ask the recpients for some community service. What happens to those people who sign-up for military service primarily for the education benefits ? Two years community college is just about half a four year degree...
Just occured to me - this will just be an extension of the current public education system. We never had kids yet our property taxes paid for the local high schools etc. Now they will just include the community college costs in the property taxes as well. In a sense they will just make high school (potentially) a six year thing. Kind of fits in well with 'kids' being covered on their parents insurance until age 26.
Here we have a program that allows kids to take the last two years of HS at a University and get two years of college credits and a HS diploma. Meaning the last two years of HS is just BS. Based on the workload I saw with my three kids, I have to agree that most of HS is "babysitting". So this program is just extending the babysitting program for two more years.

There are a lot of first-rate community colleges. The students had to work their asses off to deserve and keep a slot. Many are feeder schools for excellent four-year universities.

The reason that I ask is because Obamacare is considered a success by some because forcing people to buy health insurance made more people buy health insurance. That's a crappy metric. Success has to be more than somebody got something for "free".

Yes we are bracing for this in Tennessee, where we already got the free community college party started last year; our freebies start this fall. It is going to be a bloodbath for most universities, but UT-Knoxville won't feel a thing.

Well Dull everybody loves freebies so it was an easy sell I suppose. We have HOPE scholarships already in Tennessee which are funded through the state lottery. Our freebie community college program, Tennessee Promise, is basically a redistribution of the HOPE scholarships so that kids who were going to 4 year colleges with HOPE scholarships are now going to receive less; the community college kids will get more.

Also this massive recovery wouldn't look so good with colleges shuttering now would it? It's been speculated the entire reason for the student loan program was to keep colleges accredited, namely law school, because if enrollment is too low they lose it.

The lesser ivy league college my sister works at is 2/3 s out of country origin students.
The cost of a State School in Texas -ie -Texas State University in San marcos is now over $28,000 a year for a Texas resident. When I started college in 1978 a texas Resident could get into UT Austin or Texas A&M for $4 per semester hour -guarateed with a minimal 800 on the SAT. Now it's almost impossible to get in at all for a white kid unless you have a 3.8 high school GPA and a 1350 SAT. Might as well have socialized education compared to the shit you have now - which is so costly, that kids and parents leave with a shitty education and tens of thousands of student loans.
Oh yeah... son number 1 has $70 K debt courtesy of TSU. And watch out for those advisors. They will write you a degree plan and change it on you twice before you graduate. They need to justify those women studies classes after all.

I mentioned last year that I have first hand experience of grading American undergraduates for a major college with learning material online. Dismal. One of the most depressing experiences I had of late. I'm all for self improvement and education but this is just a ridiculous waste of money that will benefit less than 10% of the participants depending on their vocational aptitudes. Far less than 10% considering that I'm basing it on an accredited university with a decent curriculum.
Well at least some people will benefit and it is an investment in the future generation, of sorts, if you want a bunch of young waiters who will spout jargon they don't understand while they serve you soup with piss. I reckon the money would be far better spent giving scholarships based on merit to talented people to attend real universities. The real tragedy is the waste of America's intelligent youth with first class minds who are barred from a first class education because of money or affirmative action.

Number of students once it's free (why go to 4 year college for first 2 years) - 20,000,000
Cost per student (will increase of course, after all it's free) - $7,000
Annual tab - $140 billion
Ten year cost - $1.4 trillion

I'm starting a college. The dorms will consist of multi-colored tents all arranged in circles. Bathing will be optional. Meals will all be KD. Drive-in sized tv screens with many loudspeakers. Classes will be optional as well but very interesting - butterfly watching and pipe stuffing. Hard to pack it all into two years but there has to be some forceful motivation like no classes/no porn.

I've got a 2 year Nuclear Engineering Technology, and a 4 year Business Administration degree, and a Journeyman Electrician's license. I spent tons of money on the first two, which I never use and I'm still paying for, and I took a test for the Journeyman license (few hundred bucks), which I use everyday.
Kids: Get a trade, not a degree. You'll do much better.
Mediocre kids get the trade, smart kids get the (smart) degree.

60 billion over ten years right? That's chicken-feed compared to what .gov spends on their endless wars and other military adventures around the world. I for one am all for this kind of support and hopefully the people using it will enroll in classes that end up providing the background for a useful trade.
The community college right across the street from where I live has two year technical degrees in things like aviation mechanics, carpentry (cabinet making), machining, welding, electrical technician, auto mechanics, diesel/heavy equipment mechanics - just to name a few that I know of (I may have gotten the titles wrong). In my opinion you really couldn't go wrong taking classes like these as they all are trades in demand where I live.
Congress should pass a bill enacting this program and repealing Obamacare at the same time.

The community colleges are already at full capacity. Near me, the clases fill up fast. They will have to double/triple in size to accomodate the masses.

the original gi bill that gave full scholarships to military vets for post high school training and college was the best investment the usa .gov ever made. there was a huge demand for skilled work and college degrees back then that a freebee education for a ready workforce was the smartest thing to do. the return on that investment was huge.
a freebee education today, paid for with tax dollars for an economy that has only a need for the very smart in any field(top10%max), medical workers of all sorts with rns and above making good money(that's science) and any decent quant, coder, organized organization guy or a good salesman and the other 90% need to know how to say things like "may i help you" and "would you like cheese with that", is a way to extend the hiatus from work for a good part of the currently partially employed.

I have a ton of friends in K-12 and higher ed in California; cc, cal state, UC, OP-Regents.
I got involved in some local school district stuff in the last year wherein California is rolling out some new standard of local supervision of their K-12 schools - LCAP. In any case part of this latest mumbo-gumbo is that districts are having to disclose the performance of students on standardized tests. It's always been there, but they are leaking more out now.
In any case I look at these hidden metrics and largely due to the influx of non-English speaking kids and of course the incapacity for public education to teach critical thinking skills the local district reported that among 5th graders between 50-60% of their kids are below math and writing skills (whatever that is). So the public ed gets an "F." So no surprise there right - home school your kids.
So I wander around and talk to a top senior administrator for the local junior college.that sees these same kids form the local K-12 system, but to teach them welding, auto-repair and gen-ed for transfer, etc. In passing I ask about what percentage of their instructors/classroom space/teaching budget/ is devoted to "remedial" or high school level (or below) curriculum.
The "answer?" The same 50-60%.
So basically this Obama scheme is to largely pay for another 2 years of failed k-12 education (at least in the California system) and buy off the last California intelligentsia in the unions and democratic party.
My main take away is the damage is done by the age of 7 in public education. If you are not reading, writing and maths on a challenging level you will never make it up during the rest of your K-12 odyssey, so the high schools pawn these kids off to the local juco to take another battery of simpleton classes that Herr Obama is going to pay for with federal funny money.
And we all know the kicker. You think all those higher-ed admins are taking a pay cut. You will see nothing jc tuition double within 3 years along with all the other overhead in this "free" information age. Books, certificate programs to operate a cash register - only to be replaced by a robot.

They can try to buy-off these Millennials, but when even their parents don't have jobs to pay these brats cell phones there will be hell to pay. Don't worry the republicants will ram it home too.

You may have my condolence for your ignorance but no respect is due, leech. Before the afluent European WW2 refugees blighted America with the minimum wage in the 50s, American businesses ran very efficient apprenticeship programs. They trained their own employees, who advanced to high paying positions strictly on the basis of merit. Specifically due to the minimum wage law these training programs were all gradually phased out and gradually those jobs went abroad. You might know it as the rust belt. The cost of training was shifted to the State and the now bloated state colleges/colonization hubs expanded their function, on the dime of the same American tax paying industries. As these companies went away this fiat bubble got started.
Was this unintended? No. It was an orchestrated act of subversion by hostile foriegn powers, moles and domestic traitors. The rats who bought Woodrow Wilson wrote the blueprint. The rats who ousted Wallace, poisoned FDR and propped up Truman laid the foundation. Eisenhower enthusiastically installed the grid.
