The Cost Of Obama's "Free" Community College Plan To Taxpayers? $60 Billion

Tyler Durden's picture

Yesterday, to much shock and dismay, Obama revealed his latest "noble" grand vision: provide a free community college education to millions of folks. Apparently now, far too late, even the community organizer-in-chief realized that with $1.2 trillion in student loans, almost double the total outstanding credit card debt, which as the TBAC warned will rise to a mindblowing $3.3 trillion in one decade all else equal...

... and of which already one third will likely end up unrepad..

... there is simply no way the US economy can grow and absent a major overhaul of the educational system, the Millennials will never be able to take their rightful place as the dynamo of US economic growth.

What is Obama's solution? Another free lunch.

Of course, one look at Venezuela should suffice to see how the myth of free lunches ends every single time:

Socialist unicorns and Marxist rainbows aside, what will Obama's "free" plan cost taxpayers? The answer: $60 billion over 10 years, according to a White House official.

The details from the latest White House pool report:

Eric Schultz, the deputy press secretary,  said that President Obama would be joined in Knoxville by Vice President Joe Biden and Dr. Jill Biden to announce his proposal to make two years of community college free for all responsible students no matter their age.

Among other things, here is what he said about the cost of the program:

How would you pay for this program:

Will release details in the budget

Said there was "intense" interest in the idea. More than 5.7 million people viewed the Facebook video by 10 am Friday, he said. 21.1 million people "have been reached" by the Facebook post. He said it was the most successful Facebook post.

Said the college program will cost "roughly $60 billion over 10 years."

"That is a significant investment, but it's one the president believes is worthwhile because we need to make sure that America's young people are getting the skills they need to succeed in the 21st century economy."

He said the $60 billion represents the federal share of the program.

And if "$60 billion" is what the president considers free, we dread to think how much it would cost taxpayers if Obama decided to actually to some aggressive wealth redistributing for a change...

This would be a great time to put forth ending the department of education.  It could get a good discussion going about schools needing to be based locally in their curriculum, etc.  Maybe we can finally get back to education instead of company job training?

I say we ban public funding for K - 12 while we're at it. I went to private schools. We all should.

If you like your bloated wasteful and overpriced 4 year schools just wait to see what we do to your local 2 year schools.

YES WE CAN.

No suprise this would be completely slammed on here.  Rather invest in 'swords to plowshares' than the $1T plus we are truly annual spending on defense-related items in the budget.  Hell we are spending over $4B annually just to cleanup up the nuclear wasteland, er waste facility, at Hanford in E. Washington.

Like to see this as a part of a more rigorous effort though to go after and deny students at loans with institutions with poor graduation rates.  Additionally, I would like to see a legit independent and 3rd party organization that collects and truly distributes information to students on 4-year graduation rates for each institution by college/school, average % of full-time employment within 12 months, and salary imagination collected for those employed and earnings at 5 and 10 years.  There have been some efforts to do this but they have been ad-hoc and colleges still can game the numbers too much.

Much cheaper to just print everybody a PhD.

There's a birth certificate outfit in Hawaii can take care of it.

An extra 2 years of high school where douchebag thugs and pot heads don't have to go out into the real world and find work, instead get free community college education where they can now torture their college professors instead of their high school teachers.

So by the time they finish their 2 years the job market is flooded with an ass load of edumacated zombies who probably feel they are entitled to high paying jobs because they went to "collage" despite not finishing.

Working towards my master degree and teaching at the community college level used to be one of my back up plans. Fuck that shit now.

If there's something the US need is indeed more educated people to sustain an advanced productive system. I don't mind if my tax dollars are spent on education, that's the best thing they could be spent on.

Master of Coin: $60bn?

Obama: Add that to the royal account.

Master of Coin: But Sir, the account is at $18 trillion already

Obama: Bother me not with such trivial details. All I want you to do is call Yellen

This news has been all over the internet since day one. But will it actually happen? I would not be so sure. I mean I truly believe that Obama would want to make college free for those who really deserve it, but let’s face, when such opportunity will be on the horizon many students will reconsider their attitude towards education. It will no longer be a need to apply to custom essay writing service online. Students will have a strong motivation. What will Obama do then? I am sure that there will be  certain budget for colleges…That’s that question if (if if if) congress approves free college education for successful students.
