Gunshots have been heard in Dammartin-en-Goele where the two Charlie Hebdo suspects are holed up with a hostage.

Sky's Ian Woods, who is on the scene, said: "There was a burst of gunfire that lasted about 10 seconds. Since then we’ve heard four or five explosions.

Clearly this is the end game of this operation."

Within the past few minutes smoke was seen rising from the factory complex close to the outskirts of Paris and near to Charles De Gaulle airport.

Just one observation from a guy with intelligence, security & military expertise:

Fortunate for westerners that the islamic cult worshipers are low intelligence because that number of terrorists with AK's could have done far, far, far greater damage in lives, property, economy, terror, etc for a much longer period of time if they had some smarts and knew how to plan and execute.

Just one simple example, they could have attacked in preplanned timed succession in different areas of the city, and then escaped quickly to the next site or a preplanned safe holdout, so as to force the police/military to have to deploy everywhere and shut down the entire city, and creating mass panic that there are potential terrorists everywhere ready to attack.

I'm neither French nor have I lived in France, but I am a historian, and as such, I'm not so sure the French won't retaliate against Algerians/Muslims.  Remember the so-called "massacre" of October 1961 during which the french police herded Algerians into a big stadium and killed a dozen or so by throwing them into the river Seine. 

Many, many more Algerians killed each other than killed by frenchmen -- at least 10:1 -- but this doesn't negate the willingness of the french to kill their enemies.

On the other hand, the example of Pope Pius 2, who tried to rally the Europeans to fight against the Muslims, called for an army to push them out, and ended up alone, on a beach near Venice -- no one showed!  So, the Italians, at least, were unwilling to acknowledge the danger posed by Muslim expansionism.
