Mikhail Gorbachev Warns of Major (Nuclear) War In Europe Over Ukraine

Tyler Durden's picture

Two months ago we reported that former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev has warned that tensions between Russia and the West over the Ukraine crisis have put the world "on the brink of a new Cold War." That warning has now escalated as the 1990 Nobel Peace Prize winner told Der Spiegel news magazine, according to excerpts released on Friday, that tensions between Russia and European powers over the Ukraine crisis could result in a major conflict or even nuclear war, adding that "a war of this kind would unavoidably lead to a nuclear war."

As Reuters reports,

Former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev warned that tensions between Russia and European powers over the Ukraine crisis could result in a major conflict or even nuclear war, in an interview to appear in a German news magazine on Saturday.

"A war of this kind would unavoidably lead to a nuclear war," the 1990 Nobel Peace Prize winner told Der Spiegel news magazine, according to excerpts released on Friday.

"We won't survive the coming years if someone loses their nerve in this overheated situation," added Gorbachev, 83. "This is not something I'm saying thoughtlessly. I am extremely concerned."

Tensions between Russia and Western powers rose after pro-Russian separatists took control of large parts of eastern Ukraine and Russia annexed Crimea in early 2014.

The United States, NATO and the European Union accuse Russia of sending troops and weapons to support the separatist uprising, and have imposed sanctions on Moscow.

Russia denies providing the rebels with military support and fends off Western criticism of its annexation of Crimea, saying the Crimean people voted for it in a referendum.

Gorbachev, who is widely admired in Germany for his role in opening the Berlin Wall and steps that led to Germany's reunification in 1990, warned against Western intervention in the Ukraine crisis.

"The new Germany wants to intervene everywhere," he said in the interview. "In Germany evidently there are a lot of people who want to help create a new division in Europe."

The elder statesman, whose "perestroika" (restructuring) policy helped end the Cold War, has previously warned of a new cold war and potentially dire consequences if tensions were not reduced over the Ukraine crisis.

The diplomatic standoff over Ukraine is the worst between Moscow and the West since the Cold war ended more than two decades ago.

*  *  *

As we concluded previously, Do not forget that Russian generals have also pushed for adding pre-emptive nuclear strikes into the new military doctrine... having also previously predicted the US/NATO as enemies reported above.

There is no such thing as a "preemptive nuclear strike".  Any use of nuclear weapons will activate a MAD reaction.  Anybody who does not understand this, especially if they hold political power and can order the use of nuclear weapons, is truly the biggest danger to the human race.

Former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger has given a chilling assessment of a new geopolitical situation taking shape amid the Ukrainian crisis, warning of a possible new Cold War and calling the West’s approach to the crisis a “fatal mistake.”

The 91-year-old diplomat characterized the tense relations as exhibiting the danger of “another Cold War.”

“This danger does exist and we can't ignore it,” Kissinger said. He warned that ignoring this danger any further may result in a “tragedy,” he told Germany’s Der Spiegel.

By using the words "fatal mistake" and "tragedy" I am assuming that Heinz is NOT with the current Nudelman/Obama program. If it alarms Henry to the point of breaking rank with his neoCon bretheren it should absolutely scare the fucking pants off the rest of the planet...

The Russians are stubborn sons-of-bitches, and not to be trifled with.  If it weren't for the evil they are up against, I would stay way the hell away from them. Sadly, however, in the current international calculus, I see them as one of the few roadblocks remaining to the absolute totalitarian dream of the western 'elites' (read: warmongering thieving gum stuck to the shoe of the US and Europe).  I am no Putin lover, but I am stuck in that distasteful position of the "enemy of my enemy".  Sigh...

I'm married to a German girl who was born in the '50s, and the stories she tells me about life when Germany was West/East before the unification would curl most people's toes. She and many others like her are under no delusions when it comes to Russia.

These clowns we have in DC have been coddled all their lives and have no idea how the real world works. It's like they slept through thier history classes. Unfortunately, we as a nation have let them snort so much fairy dust on our dime that at some point we will pay the price like a bunch of passengers who sat back and allowed the bus driver to drink straight shots out of a bottle of Jack while barreling down the highway.

Those Russians are not to be trifled with as you say. I don't give a damn how skilled our youth are with their magical texting thumbs, when push comes to shove they will have no backbone to support them like the Russian youth who have been taught by their forefathers what strife is about.

My kids are too old to be drafted but 3 of my 5 grandsons are of age. One's been in the Air Force going on three years already. You can imagine how vocal I am in public about this shit. I don't want my grandsons turned into cannon fodder. If you can't imagine, just wait until you have sons or grandsons at risk over this concocted Cold War 2.0. It's enough to keep you awake at night.

Bollixed, I completely agree with you, unfortunately, very few people in west understand what Russia is.

Both my grand fathers fought two wars against Soviet Union, they survived and never ever regretted the sacrifices Finland had to go through,  but they were realists and this BS we are doing against the Russians would not go down well with them.

To fight against a invader and poke a pissed off bear is two very different things.

Leave the fucking russkies alone, do business, interact with respect, but do not, repeat, do not fuck with them for no reason.

Kissinger and Zbigniew Brzezinski have a weird relationship.  Brzezinski is absolutely scripting Obama's Foreign Policy, and would be the power behind the throne for Hilary if it should come to that.

While both are utterly amoral psychopaths, Brzezinski comes from a Polish family from Galicia, in what is now Western Ukraine.  That area has produced evil motherfuckers since the Romans first said, "Man, these motherfuckers are evil!"  I can't really blame somebody from that part of the world for really hating the Russians, but you can't be in the position of directing US Foreign Policy simply because you really really hate the Russians.  Zbig's signal achievement so far has been trapping the USSR into the war in Afghanistan, with the Mujahedin featuring the later-famous Osama bin Laden of course.  Now Zbiggy's looking to polish off the Russians before he dies, or just after.  I think it's really all the same to him.

Kissinger, evil as he is, doesn't irrationally hate anybody.  He rationally decides who should be killed to advance the interests of Empire.  Once in a while he finds Brzezinski's bloodthirstiness distasteful, preferring his own utter bloodlessness (or transfusions from infants, who the hell knows).

They're heading for different circles of hell.

Calling this a Cold War is misleading, since it presumes it will come to nothing, as the Cold War did. Why should anyone be concerned about another Cold War?

The first one resulted in no war at all, with zero casualties, outside of secret agents or minor skirmishes between the Kremlin and US deep state. If that's all this is, who cares?

A great point, ZerOhead!

I thought it, when I read:

http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2015-01-09/road-war-russia

Former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger has given a chilling assessment of a new geopolitical situation taking shape amid the Ukrainian crisis, warning of a possible new Cold War and calling the West’s approach to the crisis a “fatal mistake.”

NATO countries are totally dominated by the banksters' political puppets, for whom enough brainwashed muppets vote. History has selected for the most criminally insane people to be able to dominate civilization, because they were the best at backing up deceits with destruction. Overall, too much "success" from that has driven civilization to become criminally insane, as demonstrated by MAD Money As Debt, backed by MAD Mutual Assured Destruction.

We are living inside of a political situation where MADNESS RULES. There are combined money/murder systems. Since money IS measurement backed by murder, and those have become globalized systems of electronic monkey money, backed by apes with atomic bombs, our civilization appears to have become terminally sick and insane. Due to the vicious feedback loops between money and the funding of the political processes, there are no practically possible ways to prevent our own MAD self-destruction.

There are no sufficient ways to actually counteract the propaganda pumped out by the mass media. There are not enough saner politicians, which could successfully campaign against the established systems of MADNESS. Those few who attempt to do so are almost always controlled opposition groups, or reactionary revolutionaries, promoting the same old-fashioned impossible ideals, which always backfire badly in the real world.

Kissinger appears to have been a relatively realistic balance of power kind of guy, who did not hesitate to promote mass murders in the past to advance the banksters global agenda. However, his recent comments appear to demonstrate that he recognizes the degree to which the current crop of ruling classes have become even more criminally insane than the previous crop.

Overall, society is headed towards times of Peak Insanity. The debt slavery systems have already driven their numbers towards debt insanities, and that must apparently drive conditions to provoke death insanities, on an unprecedented level. Meanwhile, the only genuinely better real resolutions to the actual problems would require integrated systems of overall better death controls. However, thousands of years of the most successful death controls being done through the maximum possible deceits and treacheries has resulted in a globalized political economy based on enforced frauds. Those systems are MAD, and they are automatically getting MADDER every day.

Since there is no genuine opposition to those established systems, that promotes better death controls to back up better debt controls, but only controlled opposition groups that promote the impossible ideals that no such systems should exist, or at least none that human beings are conscious of, means that there is nothing on the political horizon which can cope with the development of globalized systems of electronic monkey money, backed by apes with atomic bombs.

The Grand Canyon Chasm between progress in physical sciences, compared to political sciences, keeps on getting BIGGER. The ruling classes appear to believe in some of the most old-fashioned religions, while their controlled opposition tends to also believe in various other old-fashioned religions and ideologies. There is NOTHING in our political processes which is consistent with the development of technologies like electronics and atomic energy.

Rather, the established social pyramid systems, which were always based on being able to back up lies with violence, which became more sophisticated symbolic systems of legalized lies, backed by legalized violence, now dominate all of the NATO countries, so that they are driven to try to continue to enforce their frauds on astronomically amplified scales!

The world has become an insane asylum, controlled by the most criminally insane inmates, while there is practically nothing one can do but wait and watch as that becomes more and more psychotic every day! I believe that has become so blatantly bad that some of the elder statesmen are speaking out about that. However, they NEVER address the deeper issues, but only recognize how out-of-control the established systems that they helped maintain have become.

From my point of view, the basic problem is that natural selection became internalized as human intelligence, which then was primarily applied to develop systems of artificial selection based on being able to back up deceit with destruction. After those systems became amplified by technologies which were many orders of magnitude BIGGER than anything which previously existed in human history, our problems are now trillions of times worse than ever before in known human history, while there is NOTHING which is publicly significant enough to be able to provide better resolutions of those problems, because the established systems, including their controlled opposition groups, are already way too insane to not automatically become even more psychotically insane.

Technologies like electronics and atomic energy are being applied according to the agenda of the most criminally insane people, who developed to be able to dominate human civilization by being the best at backing up their dishonesty with violence, while everyone else adapted to survive by living inside of those systems of social slavery, and therefore, mostly ending up believing in bullshit. Since there are actually combined money/murder systems, in which money is measurement backed by murder, there are no genuine solutions to our MAD problems which did not develop better ways to back up the debt controls with death controls.

However, around and around we go, that the debt slavery has become debt insanities, which are headed to provoke death insanities, while the vast majority of people have been conditioned to not want to understand that, and so, there continues to be nothing but ridiculous, controlled opposition groups, who oppose the rampant, reckless, ruthless, runaway criminal insanities of the ruling classes, who were selected by history to be able and willing to go for broke to try to continue to enforce their frauds, despite that quite possibly causing MAD collective suicide!

Personally, I have been worrying about that since I was a teenager, several decades ago, and have spent the last few decades attempting to do something about that through the political processes, while the only thing I thereby accomplished was that the more I learned, the worse it got. Therefore, when I read statements like those above from guys like Gorbachev and Kissinger, I think they are understating how serious the situation is becoming! In my view, it is impossible to overstate how serious the situation has become to have the globalized frauds of electronic monkey money, backed by the threat of force from apes with atomic bombs, especially since all the other monkeys and apes who have adapted to live within those systems mostly believe in bullshit, or otherwise have developed attitudes of evil deliberate ignorance in order to personally cope with having been born and raised inside of social systems totally dominated by the biggest bullies' bullshit world view, that asserts constantly enforcing more frauds with more force is the way forward, regardless that the technologies available to do so have become millions, then billions, then trillions of times BIGGER, while those are headed towards becoming amplified to quadrillions of times, IF civilization continues to survive ...

However, while those are surely the REAL FACTS, the other SOCIAL FACTS in North America are that the only successful politicians are the banksters' puppets, whose only job is to continue to fool enough of the muppets, enough of the time, while nobody else can compete with the ways that the public schools and mass media have already overwhelmingly brainwashed those muppets to believe in the banksters' bullshit, and therefore, continue to elect political puppets, who have no other qualifications than that they were the best available professional liars and immaculate hypocrites.

Therefore, the MAD ENFORCED FRAUDS are automatically spinning out of control, getting worse, faster, while there is nothing which is politically possible to change the basic systems, to prevent them continuing to implement their criminally insane agenda. For all practical purposes, someone who does their best to try to understand that situation is in the same predicament as someone who was never interested to learn about that, because the realities of the established systems provide no possible ways for anyone who learns about the degree to which civilization has become criminally insane to actually change anything in any sufficiently significant ways to more intelligently adapt to those emerging runaway realities of globalized electronic frauds backed by atomic bombs.

Headline is misleading.

Major (nuclear) war in Europe would not be confined to Europe.

A US-Russian nuclear war would not only destroy the target zones, it would catastrophically disrupt the biosphere to the point where Earth would become unihabitable.

Nuclear firestorms would create a global stratospheric smoke layer that would block most sunlight from reaching Earth, causing Ice Age weather conditions in a matter of weeks, which would last for more than a decade.

This would make agriculture impossible, no food could be grown, most humans and animals would starve.

Is that the plan?

For hard cash, we will lie and deceive
Even our masters don't know the web we weave
One world, it's a battleground
One world, and we will smash it down
One world ... One world
Invisible transfers, long distance calls,
Hollow laughter in marble halls
Steps have been taken, a silent uproar
Has unleashed the dogs of war
You can't stop what has begun
Signed, sealed, they deliver oblivion
We all have a dark side, to say the least
And dealing in death is the nature of the beast
One world, it's a battleground
One world, and we will smash it down
One world ... One world
The dogs of war won't negotiate
The dogs of war don't capitulate,
They will take and you will give,
And you must die so that they may live
You can knock at any door,
But wherever you go, you know they've been there before
Well winners can lose and things can get strained
But whatever you change, you know the dogs remain.
One world, it's a battleground
One world, and we will smash it down
One world ... One world

No, tensions between Russian and Western powers rose after the US sponsored a violent overthrow of the elected Urkainian government using armed neo-Nazi shock-troops, after the US/EU promised President Yanukovich that he could stay and elections would be held months later, then they double-crossed him and put neo-Nazi coup leaders in power.

I would like to also remind you that, that dictator (also could be called a Russian puppet) was "elected" in a sham election - this type of election may be normal in Russia,  but most of the civilized  world would call them corrupt.

I was in Berlin when The Wall fell, briefly in Poland, then to Austria in the immediate aftermath.

It was an accident that it happened at all.  A bumbling Italian news crew accidentally mis-interpreting a botched interview and set off a chain of events that few will ever know and most would not understand.  The Wall fell due to miscommunication amongst journalists and bureaucrats.   By the time everyone thought they understood what was happening too many people would have had to have been shot at the checkpoints for the personel -and ammo- on hand; and the gates were flung open simply to avoid a brutal massacre of dumb civilians and the possibility of a rout of the guardsmen.  The accepted 'history' on this event is nothing but Western propaganda bullshit.

...& You have no idea how many Soviet/Nazi bureaucrats and footsoldiers and criminals were disseminated out of the region and across the world during the confusion and diaspora.  Even the US/UK/West Germany don't know.  It blew up right in their faces and the parts were scattered to the wind to be chased after later...

All that aside: Gorbachev is still connected to the old security and miliary aparatus.  IF he is concerned there is probably a really good reason to be concerned.  Most people have never cornered an injured cat -let a alone an injured grizzly bear.

As am I.

How does one accpet and at the same time defend a thoroughly owned and complicit 'media'?

What resposnse can you offer to institutional capture?  Capture not merely through education/ideological well poisoning, but through access and dissemination management, economic/employment consolidation, regulatory and legal pressure and sanction, etc..

Would you or I feel differently about people being gunned down in cold blood if they happened to be what we considered snake-oil sales monkeys, zio/nwo/leftist/nazi propagandists, water carriers for corporate power, religious and/or race baiters and agitators?

This is war.   Words are weapons.  Ideas are weapons.  It's a dirty fight.  There are no rules.

Humor is a potent delivery system for ideas.  -George Carlin was a great warrior.   -Hunter Thompson a weird commando.

Images speak across language and dialect.  -The staff of Charlie Hebdo knew they were at war.  -WilliamBanzai7 is a warrior still in our midst.

I am personally here to piss on all of these phonies and evil shills, too.  I'll use reason, poetry, humor: everything.

Whatever I can muster to fuck with my enemies is fair because I know they will destroy what I value and they have no scruples, no restraint, no morals, no rules...

If the US puts NATO troops into Ukraine, Russia will likely attack - and win.  The decision will be up to the US whether to accept defeat or launch nukes.  The EU will simply cave in and sue for peace - giving Russia all or part of Ukraine.  The US, however cannot accept defeat and is thus the most dangerous player involved.

Every "red line" that the Putin/Russia lovers have drawn has been crossed with no reaction.  (I am not a hater by the way.)  If Putin is going to do anything he will have to do it before NATO enter Ukraine as Russia will never take on NATO directly.  Putin is too afraid even to declare a no fly zone over Ukraine or Syria.  Remember how Russia would never let Syria be bombed or destroyed?

Putin sat on his hands and missed his chance to direct the action.  Ukraine is no different than Iraq, Libya, Serbia, Syria, Kosovo, and other to Putin/Russia.  They are used to slow down the advance on Russia while the Putin's put their heads in the sand regarding the final outcome.  Result - when they get to Russia - Russia is alone.  (China will not act for Russia but will take over parts of Russia when it falls.)

This type of talk is just like Saddam's empty "Mother of All Battles!!!" threats.  Fear and desperation.

Russia could have had Iraq, Libya, Syria, Iran, Cuba all as allies and to good effect.  Too afraid to do it then, too afraid to do it now.

It'll be interesting to see what the TU95s are really doing. Lots of mis-information re. this aircraft's capabilities, and although only 50 knots slower than the EIGHT engined B52, those NK-12 turboprops gave it an unbeatable fuel economy, so an amazing endurance. There are many good photos of large numbers of dorsal  exhaust (??) vents on these aircraft, suggesting they carry other, "far more interesting" payloads than conventional weaponry.

Assuming we all manage to postpone WW3 for a few more years, there have been suggestions for replacement of the NK-12s with  propfan technology. The Ivchenko D27 looks promising in the current performance specifications, but there are other very good, very modern engines (e.g. Kuznetsov PD30, rather than the Ivchenko D18) that would meet the performance and economy need, that's assuming that there is even a genuine will to re-engine such airframes.

P

If what has been said about what happened to the Donald Cook last summer is true. The encounter they had with the Sukhoi Su-24 that fried it's Aegis navigational systems to the extent that the little enlisted SOBs cried all the way to Romania with a letter to the Secretary of the Navy stating that they would no longer be used as "fodder" where the ship limped for "reconstruction" i'd say Russia has all the bases covered -and always did.

I'm the son of a navy fighter pilot vintage Vietnam war and he use to say two places you'd never want to do a tour of duty is either the Black Sea or the Baltic.  I think the U.S. Navy got a taste of what they can expect if they are stupid enough to try some more stunts with our vessels like the D. Cook in the future.

And this doesn't even begin to point out that the Russians have successfully penetrated our air defenses in Alaska and off the coast of California with those bombers on several sorties we both know and don't know about within 100 miles of the coatline?!

Just imagine what one Russian cruise missile from the belly of those antiquated bombers could do if it launched one within 100 miles off the coast of CA?!!!

With a 20 ton payload capacity, and very spacious "interior" the Russians have plenty of room to experiment with all kinds of fixed, or "removeable" packages.

http://i.imgur.com/tkLDn8O.jpg

Years (and years!) ago, i.e. very "Cold War" era, there were a spate of photos of TU95s appearing, with their bomb doors open in flight, often remaining open for hours. The UK press made quite a joke about this, along the predictable lines "the Russians are so dumb they've forgotten something!", and "Too much vodka the night before".

Being "full of it" and certain the Russians were "The Enemy" I simply followed what was the Party Line, that is until I had a chat with an elderly retired RAF Intelligence Officer, just at the time one of the MSM rags were doing this as a front-page story. His comments stopped me dead, and that is when I really started to THINK why Russia would do this.

His comment? - "They are fully aware those doors are open. So they are doing it for a reason". Just when I was starting to learn about the technologies behind ECM, and EC-CM. Turns out they were "probably" determining performance envelope date with the bays open, and radar data suggested that the TU95 could maintain full airspeed irrespective of door state. Whatever the reason (ECM / ELINT, or something completely different), the Russians were doing what they do best - developing "new" uses for existing (reliable and proven) equipment, rather than following the Western fashion of "re-Inventing the Wheel".

If anyone has an idea what might have been happening, I'd be very interested to hear your thoughts. I "suspect" there might have been an ECM / offensive ECM intent, since the flights were always over the North Sea, often within visible range of the Fylingdales BMEWS installation, which was a "heavy hint".

The informed historians and astute observers here on ZH will have noticed immediately that...

The Cuban Missile Crisis started as a Russian RETALIATION for the US putting a missile base into Turkey.

Now look at the bases the US and 'NATO' have added in proximity to its borders since then.

E.g. A bunch in what was former USSR (Georgia, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Turkemistan), Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Then add the ones that are a bit further afield in Muslim countries like Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, UAE, Oman and Lybia, to run interference for Israel, the Saudis and protect the Petrodollar.

The USSA will not be stopped until they ARE stopped, dead in their tracks. And that sure as hell won't happen with any bullshit "Chinese Foreign Policy": All talk and posturing, combined with slow economic moves and zero kinetic military moves.

If I were Putin, I'd upgrade the naval base in Cuba, and put one in Venezuela. If China will let him -- seeing that they are holding his bridle these days.

if I were Putin, I would not let Gorby's fantasy become reality.

or, maybe it would help counter global warming?

http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2011/02/110223-nuclear-war-winte...

During the Cold War a nuclear exchange between superpowers—such as the one feared for years between the United States and the former Soviet Union—was predicted to cause a "nuclear winter."

In that scenario hundreds of nuclear explosions spark huge fires, whose smoke, dust, and ash blot out the sun for weeks amid a backdrop of dangerous radiation levels. Much of humanity eventually dies of starvation and disease.

...

To see what climate effects such a regional nuclear conflict might have, scientists from NASA and other institutions modeled a war involving a hundred Hiroshima-level bombs, each packing the equivalent of 15,000 tons of TNT—just 0.03 percent of the world's current nuclear arsenal. (See a National Geographic magazine feature on weapons of mass destruction.)

The researchers predicted the resulting fires would kick up roughly five million metric tons of black carbon into the upper part of the troposphere, the lowest layer of the Earth's atmosphere.

In NASA climate models, this carbon then absorbed solar heat and, like a hot-air balloon, quickly lofted even higher, where the soot would take much longer to clear from the sky.

Reversing Global Warming?

The global cooling caused by these high carbon clouds wouldn't be as catastrophic as a superpower-versus-superpower nuclear winter, but "the effects would still be regarded as leading to unprecedented climate change," research physical scientist Luke Oman said during a press briefing Friday at a meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in Washington, D.C.

Earth is currently in a long-term warming trend. After a regional nuclear war, though, average global temperatures would drop by 2.25 degrees F (1.25 degrees C) for two to three years afterward, the models suggest.

At the extreme, the tropics, Europe, Asia, and Alaska would cool by 5.4 to 7.2 degrees F (3 to 4 degrees C), according to the models. Parts of the Arctic and Antarctic would actually warm a bit, due to shifted wind and ocean-circulation patterns, the researchers said.

After ten years, average global temperatures would still be 0.9 degree F (0.5 degree C) lower than before the nuclear war, the models predict.

Thanks for the good info.

Some exasperated 'editorial venting' on my part aside, I see the "bottom line problem" being the hardcore group of ideological zealots/fanatics who have hijacked US Domestic and Foreign Policy, i.e. 90% of Team Obama and their Sponsors.

It's like dealing with a 'Hydra'. Taking out one two or few of Hydra's heads just doesn't seem to cut it. Something on a MUCH bigger scale is required: e.g. something that resembles the original "Friday the 13th", when a simultaneous assault of the Pope's forces took out the ruling Templars (who had amassed amazing wealth and power all over Europe).

And it probably goes much deeper and wider than just the Administration -- given that both houses of Congress have been 95% co-opted, as has the Supreme Court. We truly have a "defacto fascist USA".

The Cuban crisis turned into a draw or tie in my opinion.  And that was a very stupid move on the part of Russia.  When it came down to it Cuba was the only chance Russia had to put anything close to the US border (other than subs).  The US appeared to be ready to fight (maybe just a bluff) and Russia backed down.  That is when TPTB in the US knew Russia was mostly hot air, Russia walk away from the only real gem.  The US/Israel ramped up the push against Russia and it has never stopped.

The US has used the tough talk from Russia to justify actions and expenses to the US public.  Russia just helped them.  But if Russia had actually taken action and refused to back down the US public might have become vocal in pulling back.

Chess player my butt (at least not on behalf of the Russian people, maybe on behalf of the Russian elite).  Time for another tough guy photo opp for Putin.  Just use makeup to cover up the marks from the latest time he's been bitch slapped again.

If Putin is what his fans claim then he did not prepare for any of this in the last 10 yrs.  Now there is no time to really prepare (and he cannot match the speed of the prep the US/Israel are doing) , limited tactical nukes to defend Syria and to knock down ISIS (CIA/Mossad).  Convential warfare to wipe out the WUkraine forces in the east.

JFK ordered the military to remove the missiles from Turkey, but they ignored his order, which led directly to the Cuban missile installations and the ensuing crisis. Kruschev backed down, which led to his dismisal from the Politburo.

I've been reading that the current situation is the worst since the end of the Cold War, but really it's the worst since the Cuban Missle Crisis and there are no leaders now, who have the intestinal fortitude to avoid what I fear is going to be a catastrophe.

There are no leaders now. There are only shills.

I guess it has finally begun to dawn on the Soviet elite that they will need Russian Wheat Deal

][.  Europe cannot feed the Bear.  Ukraine will not be able to feed the Bear this year.  It will be interesting to see if sabre rattling will lower the price of Russian Wheat Deal ][ or not.  I will guess that this time the price will be high because that is the Chicago Way.

I thought Gorby was dead. Shit, 83 is real old for a Russian dude.

They typically die younger due to pickled livers.

For Gods sake!! Just nuke me and get it over with!!!!!

Is it really necessary to repeat this in every one of the first three paragraphs?

I've been noticing this "style" a lot more on ZH recently. Par for the course on the MSM sites. What's changed?

Damn I hate being manipulated!!

I don't think Ukraine is what the neocons, who control 'our' foreign policy , are really interested in.  They are trying to regime-change Russia and are doing so in extremely dangerous ways.

According to a piece from Chris Martenson, Assistant Secretary of State Victoria "Nuland....and US Assistant-Secretary of the Treasury Daniel Glaser told the Foreign Affairs Committee of the US House of Representatives in May 2014 that the objectives of the US economic sanctions strategy against the Russian Federation was not only to damage the trade ties and business between Russia and the EU, but to also bring about economic instability in Russia and to create currency instability and inflation."

there's been so many scenarios about nuclear war, none good, but horrific if you live in a major metropolitan city, anywhere.

gorbachev will attempt to start some kind of dialogue in the eu., and I expect Kissinger to come out soon with his take on the Russian visit, and try to start a dialogue in america.

this will not work if the Crimea annexation is not up front, and very publicly decided on.

Crimea is where it is and Cuba is where it is.

IF You don't like the idea of Russia parking it's nuclear armed fleet off the couast of Florida you have to accept that Russia feels exactly the same about Crimea.

Further: the United States does not really give a shit about Cuba.  Cuba is not a former territory or of miliatary importance save that it not be developed or used by a competitor.

Russia/USSR has been thoroughly ethnically, economically and politically involved in Crimea and the Donbass for hundreds of years.

One of the biggest US bases in Europe is camp Bondsteel in Kosovo. Serbia had to be bombed to pieces in order to get that base there. And not to protect the inhabitants of Kosovo but to control the Black and Caspean Sea.

Europe is fucked and any war between the US/NATO and Russia will be fought in Europe and at one point could go nuclear, even 'just' at the battlefield level. Cause Russia has thousands of tactical nuclear weapons, so called battlefield nuclear weapons. That is to take out large columns of military stuff, bases and airports. But also whole towns can be obliterated by that.

This is not just any game of poker they are playing, they are playing nuclear poker. They are trying to bring Russia on its knees thinking they can rerun the destruction of the SU again. But things are different now.

We all need to pray about this arctic methane emergency because as I’ve said to many here, this is the smoking gun going off. If we don’t deal with this methane emergency, we have very slim prospects of survival in my personal opinion.

http://collapseofindustrialcivilization.com/2014/12/08/accelerating-towards-an-arctic-blue-ocean-event/

Even conservative IPCC projections of BAU predict a 4°C rise in global temperature by the end of the century and this estimate does not include the methane release from the Arctic seabed, permafrost and tundra. No where in its reports does the IPCC state that a 4°C would be catastrophic to civilization and life on Earth.

  • Simply attempting to “adapt” to anthropogenic climate change is not a realistic option.
  • The meme of money and profit holds sway over all of society.
  • The operating system of global civilization, i.e. neoclassical economics, is fatally flawed and it will kill us.

  • The consequences of predicted drought from global warming will make food production impossible in most of the world…

And the winner will be....US dollar re-rised

After World War II, countries got into lost decades rebuilding their damaged cities, except US, thus the rise of US dollar

Then Fed and banksters screwed up US dollar big time

Therefore US dollar needs another World War (in other people's backyard) to rise again
