President Obama Officially Unveils His "Free Community College For All" Plan - Live Feed
Having tested-the-waters with his "2 years of free community college for all" plan last night, President Obama will this afternoon explain how it's all going to work, how it will be paid for (and by whom), how it will not raise education costs, how it will ensure Americans become more productive and encouraged to seek and take work, and how it will wean people from suckling at the teat of the welfare state... Oh and how he will define 'responsible' students? (rather like moderate terrorists we suspect?).

As President Obama explained last night...
“Put simply, what I’d like to do is to see the first two years of community college free for anybody who’s willing to work for it,” he said. “It’s something we can accomplish, and it’s something that will train our workforce so that we can compete with anyone in the world.”
Obama said a world-class education starts with children, but that adults need training, too. “It’s not just for kids, we also have to make sure that everybody has the opportunity to constantly train themselves for better jobs, better wages, better benefits.”
The America’s College Promise proposal could save eligible students $3,800 a year in tuition, the White House said.
According to the White House, here are the requirements for the program:
What students have to do: Students must attend community college at least half-time, maintain a 2.5 GPA, and make steady progress toward completing their program.
What community colleges have to do: Community colleges will be expected to offer programs that are either 1) academic programs that fully transfer credits to local public four-year colleges and universities, or 2) occupational training programs with high graduation rates and lead to in-demand degrees and certificates. Community colleges must also adopt promising and evidence-based institutional reforms to improve student outcomes.
What the federal government has to do: Federal funding will cover three-quarters of the average cost of community college. Participating states will be expected to contribute the remaining funds necessary to eliminate the tuition for eligible students.

IDK - I've done quite a bit of vocational training at junior colleges as well as enough GE to lead to an AS before transfering to a state college and I think the JC programs I took (A&P, welding, water treatmenet) were all excellent.

I didn't read Obama's plan, I can guess we will be taxed to pay for this JC for all. America just can't get over it's obsession with college. Better to open real, old fashioned trade schools, like still existed in the 70's. You could pick a job, and for a low fee, get two years hands on training. I had many friends who went through the trades, and all have decent jobs in building trades and specialty manufacturing and areo space. My Community College was better than the State 4-year I finished up at.
The joke was that the J.C. was the "13th Grade" and it was true for many - but those kids didn't last long. It was a place holder for them before they quit and started working in the service industry.
Most of the programs at the J.C. were specific and more trade oriented and those that stayed and finished were often adults getting applicable skills and focused training.
The real fluff you speak of was endemic at the 4-year schools because the budgets were bigger and provided the nests for the intelligentsia who could get tenure and teach about indigenous lesbian basket weavers or MBA programs on how to utilize HR to churn people at low pay/benefits while maximizing profits.
If Obummer's boondoggle goes through it will likely chase any trade programs out of the J.C.'s in favor of the fluff.

I cannot see how, in any fashion, that this is a bad idea. Community colleges feed the trades and will give the serious students the ability to find career employment. As long as the students who can't do the work are booted promptly. this is a great idea.

Perhaps because we grew up in age where we actually had to do be able to do "stuff" and still be flexible to learn new "stuff" as well... I just finished up a J750 test program to test an FPGA iaw the data sheet. I learned how to program this tester over the past two months.

They need to destroy education also to make sure atleast a large % of the population remains uneducated and poor so that we have an easy supply of cheap exploitable labor for when the Chinese take over.

Since student's have to have a 2.5 GPA, expect more incentive to pass everyone. It's either that or get stuck with bad debt instead of Federal and State tax dollars, real or printed.
