The 'Real' Threat to Our Liberty Is The Repressive Machinery Of Empire

Tyler Durden's picture

Submitted by Bill Bonner via Acting Man blog,

Equal Opportunity Mocking

Practically every day in these Diary entries we mock investors, Democrats, Republicans, teetotalers, terrorists, anti-terrorists, economists… and almost everyone else. We are equal opportunity mockers – insensitive to race, color, creed or body-fat ratio.

The mocked have only menaced us twice. Once, a journalist went off his head and sent a letter threatening to murder one of our children. We knew the sender personally; we judged him incapable of the act and recommended medical treatment.

The second time was in 2003. When we mocked President G.W. Bush’s attack on Iraq, a dear reader held his own tribunal and found us guilty of treason – a crime, he said, that should be punished by death.

Again, we brushed it off and continued making fun of the warmongers. We mock people. But we do not mock their gods. Who knows? Why take the chance?

Mocking the Gods

This week, mocking gods proved fatal to the staff at Charlie Hebdo, the Paris-based satirical newspaper. And today, all Christendom is in indignant mourning and solemn outrage. Our own hardened, satirical, cynical, ironical heart sinks in sympathy and solidarity.

“Satirist down!” screams the alarm in our own head. Duck! We say a prayer for ourselves… for the victims in Paris… and all the innocents in schools… churches… newspapers… banks… public and private spaces… rich and poor… droned… blown up… or gunned down by self-righteous world improvers all over the planet.

But the planet spins. And the media puts on its own spin. It has picked up the discourse of the very same George W. Bush… and flatters the perps. They are to be pursued not as the murderous clowns they are, but as soldiers.

The threat to our liberty, say our leaders and the press, comes from this tiny army of delusional fanatics, not from the very real armies – TSA, NSA, FBI, CIA, FDA, SEC, etc. – that pretend to suppress them.

charlie - humor is invented

Charlie Hebdo on the invention of humor: “oil” and “fire” – a premonition one might say

A War on Freedom?

And so, we raise our heads again to mock our brethren in the Fourth Estate … their masters … and their customers.”The War on Freedom,” screams the headline in British newspaper the Daily Mail. And all over the blog-TV-newspaper-o-sphere the need to fight this “war.”

French politician Jacques Myard said, “We are at war … the Western nations – like Britain, France and Germany.” People come to think what they must think when they must think it.

The US heads a global credit-fueled empire, a successor to the British, French, Portuguese, Spanish, Holy Roman, Roman, Mongol, Arab, Persian – and all the other empires. So its opinion leaders must lead opinions in a direction that confirms and justifies the imperial narrative. It is a coalition empire at war with barbarians.

France’s president, François Hollande, described the attack as an “act of exceptional barbarity.”

But killing people is hardly exceptional – neither for the empire nor its enemies. It is routine. And great empires follow their well-trodden paths, too, no matter what mockery they encounter. That path leads in a familiar direction – freedom of speech is chilled.

But we know of no instances in which foreign enemies put it on ice. Usually, it is the empire’s own bureaucrats, snoops and protectors who do the chilling. And that cooling is already under way. So sayeth a report published Monday by the international literary association and defender of free speech, PEN American:

“Writers are reluctant to speak about, write about or conduct research on topics that they think may draw government scrutiny.

This has a devastating impact on freedom of information as well: If writers avoid exploring topics for fear of possible retribution, the material available to readers – particularly those seeking to understand the most controversial and challenging issues facing the world today – may be greatly impoverished.”

The US is an empire. Left and right … red states, blue states … black-and-blue states … the First, Second, Third and Fourth estates … must all think like imperialists.

That is, like blockheads.

Il faut...

Charlie Hebdo was an equal opportunity mocker too, as can be seen here.

The real threat to our liberty is that not everyone is able to attend at least two years of community college. Dear Leader has fixed all that.

How fitting that the day before the attacks, Canada sent a guy to prison for "insulting islam". Stand with France huh? Yeah, only when it's politically convenient. Then, back to your regular everyday oppression.

CANADA's censorship of free speech is extremely fascist and too much to tolerate IMHO. I have petitioned the Federal Government of CANADA

in the past due to censorship of political discourse on the state run CBC

website. I came over to Z/H because of censorship in CANADA. Thank God Z/H does not censor free speech because that's all we fucking get in CANADA and it drives me up the wall when I encounter it especially in my own country. With regard to free speech I honestly believe that the Americans have it down to an art form compared to CANADA.

"Charlie Hedbo" was going bankrupt, because nobody read it.

"Charlie Hedbo" was a provocation, not a magazine.

Fortunately this sort of thing does not happen in the US.

I am sitting here watching the tv regarding the rally in Paris right now.....   What the hell....  I am in the Twilight Zone????   Who wants to bet that Europe NOW gets into the war on Terrorism that they have been saying the US has been in all alone and without cause for the last decade.....  Now that FUCKING France has their first attack (we have had several that make the more recent one they had like a walk in the park!).....  NOW they want to do something about it....

Or do they think that this stupid show of unity is actually going to STOP the Group of Organized Pedophiles....errrrr  Radical Islam?

Who wants to bet Europe starts to FINALLY go to war now......!! ??

They have been in it all along.  You seem to forget the plot on the Eiffel Tower.

Europe wasn't keen on invading Iraq, which had nothing to do with any war on terror, which if anything exacerbated the terrorism problem.

what has "multiculturalims" - a concept that has many faces and many very different applications - to do with NWO?

from your own link: "Ontario Court Judge Gerald Lapkin smartly convicted Mr. Brazau of the three charges he was facing — breach of the peace (by interfering with Toronto Transit Commission service), causing a disturbance (by using insulting language) and breaching his probation on the earlier hate-mongering conviction.

“You had a ticket to ride,” Judge Lapkin told him. “Not a pass to harass.” "

whatever this guy was saying, he was provoking a very strong reaction on people that were absolutely not interested in hearing him. in fact, they just wanted to commute in silence

your freedom of speech does not entail that I should not have my freedom of not listening to you. it also does not entail that you should be allowed to shout on public transport, or even transform public transport into your own private debate realm

I don't see a /sarc so I'm going to assume this guy's for real. Freedom to not listen to someone? As bad as 'murica is, at least it's marginally less fascist than that.

Here's an idea: Tune the fuck out asshole, there's your right to not listen to someone.

Using your logic, I can have the entire national media locked up for "provoking a very strong reaction on people that were absolutely not interested in hearing him." and shouting it in public spaces.

In response to Philo Beddoe's "Hope and change and a shitty 2 year diploma in fuckhead studies.  How do you say UNCLE in Chinese?"

Finding my occupation as a tool and die maker obliterated by the move to Chinese manufacturing, and finding myself unemployed in the '90's I went to a community college and get a two year diploma in wipeass studies (nursing).  I'm in my mid-sixties now and earn a gross $66,662/year. (~$33/hr)

My prior BS (hard science) is worthless, but that 2 year degree is golden in my eyes.

Don't knock 2 year community college degrees, especially if they are trade/professional study directed and especially if they are difficult, and yes, my BS in Chemistry was a cakewalk compared to those two years of nursing studies.

It's nice being male and mid-sixties and know that I can find both a good, and a fun job and make decent wages with decent bennies.

The community college thing would work IF they set the bar very high.  Get lower than a B average--and you're out.  And if the classes are meaningful.  Two year degree/certs in CAD/CAM, machine operation, HVAC, etc. are the things that America needs to revitalize our once Godly manufacturing center.

Heck, do the same in high school, get rid of those who for any reason will not perform.  BTW, I never performed in High School and never even went the past 4 months of my senior year.  I graduated with a "social pass," but I never deserved to graduate.  Throw those bums out (including me back then) if/when those who don't graduate decide they want a good education, then let them work for it.  Long ago when I decided that I wanted what college had to offer I could work summers to pay for the entire year.  Therein lies the problem--education costs are radically out of line.

If a two year free CC education is set up with low standards and baby-sitting courses it will be just one more cog in the nanny state.

You've got to be kidding!

Do you think (and 'to think' is the operative word here) that the western world led by the Anglo-American axis would give a flying f--- about the entirety of the MENA (and any aspect of its specific cultural identity/heritage/religion) were it not for ONE SINGLE CRITICAL ITEM? And what would that oh-so-important object be? Why of course, but do I really need to spell it out. B-T-U's!!!!!!!!!! Otherwise known as energy, (cheap, cheap energy which is just another way of saying replacing the need for millions upon millions of human slaves to produce value), or oil and gas, if you will. The ONLY thing that is responsible for driving the west's 200 year-long industrial revolution and debt-based consumption model of an accelerating ever-expanding growth (i.e. profitable) is based on what . . . but CHEAP BTU'S!!!!!!!!!!

And guess what, the backward Muslim towel heads (from to Algeria and Sudan and Indonesia) just happened to have the temerity to plant their tents on top of 80% of that one item the WEST covets and needs the most. Bad luck, for everyone. So how do we (the royal we...st) engage that Islamic world? On bended knee? By supplicating our beholden selves to an alternative cultural paradigm? as one might do to the next-door neighbor when one runs out of sugar for one's morning coffee fix? Hell know!! We do what we do best. We wreak havoc. In just the last 30 years Iran, Iraq, Syria, Libya, Yemen, Sudan, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Egypt, Palestine have all reaped our wrath, and suffered untold millions of unnecessary and agonizing deaths. And these were not primarily combatants in wars of nations, but innocent men, women, and children in an unceasing mayhem of destruction.

So how do we engage? If the forest is dry from lack of rain, the tinder deep and brittle, just one tiny match well placed will start a conflagration, wherein the forest itself becomes its own worst enemy, tree igniting tree. What was once a unique ecosystem, integral with a beauty unto itself, manifests in a maelstrom of self-destruction.

I maintain the West has lit many matches. Nor were these the accidental droppings of a careless smoker. We have labored diligently to secure our next narcotic fix that underlies that inconvenient alien forest in our way. And we will stop at nothing to level it. There is no end to our rapacious need to devour that which is not ours as the plans move forward to engage further in Kazakstan, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, and Kyrgystan.

And it is this monstrosity, the willing blindness to our own culpability (a psychotic derangement called transference) that will murder our freedoms in the West, and not the single acts, however horrific in the particular, of fanatical outbursts by disaffected individuals such as happened in Paris.

It is not an Al Jazeera that lacks credibility in the eyes of the world.

Citing a lack of evidence following a three-month investigation, the Manhattan District Attorney’s office announced that it wouldn’t pursue any criminal charges against Rubenstein, 70, over an encounter that his camp claimed was consensual. Rubenstein faces a civil lawsuit filed by the woman as a result of this incident, however.

"I think its funny that the US Attorney General wants to arrest David Petreus."

The overriding rule: They only arrest those that threaten them, or where the arrest benefits them in some way.

Which in this case depends on where to following the money and tracing the Zionists involved takes one.

The banksters need to repay us.

My interp: Petreus became popular with the public, and needed removed as a contender for power. Ditto McChrystal. The overarching problem for the Zionists is that their power base lies with the neo-con, evangelical Christian, sheeple. These same neo-con sheeple worship the military. As a result, the Zionist powers had to take out Petreus and McChrystal delicately. So they setup McChrystal via a booby-trapped magazine exposé. Nice and easy. But what to do about Petreus?! So they promoted Petreus to within the wolf's lair, the CIA, and then tracked him until the time was right. When the time was right, they pulled the rug out from under him in a scandal that was mostly morality based. The neo-con sheeple are very easy to con with morality scandals, as they think that if they throw stones, no one will see their own dirty laundry. Sorry, but the filth is easy to see, and even smell. Look this year for the coming morality scandal about CIA-Obama's homosexuality.

The problem with your logic is that Charlie Hebdo also insulted Christians and Jews. And there are as many Christians in the world as Muslims.

Why is it, then, that we only have these problems with Muslims?

Wouldn't their foundational policy statement, the Koran, be a good place to look to understand why?

And if that foundational policy document clearly and aggressively advocates that unbelievers are to be murdered? What are we then to conclude?

The people who wrote Charlie Hebdo were a bunch of unfunny nihilists. But they didn't deserve to die at the hands of a political movement masquerading as a religion.

    Man, fucking please...

                                 *yawn*

We kill more than that in unaccountable and unreported drone strikes on weddings, funerals, and religious meetings in seven countries every day.

Oh yeah right, silly me, it is only "terrrism" when innocent Euros or 'Mericans (US type) are killed.

Innocent brown people do not count.

As a nickname I think I'll call you BB pronounced BeBe. You didn't mention that you are equal opportunity mockers of religion. I understand. That could be dangerous

You wouldn't want to say something dangerous like: The Black Cube in Mecca, the Black Cube on the heads of Jews and the unfolded Cube that makes the cross in Christianity are the same. Because they all worship one god right now. But most aren't aware of who they worship, what they worship, why they really worship or who or what has deceived them

We wouldn't want anyone accidentally working towards really coming together until the time is right for the one world religion now would we. Someone might realize what's going on around them and say screw liberty its temporary and look where it got us. We want freedom

Freedom from lies, deception, oppression, death and destruction and the criminals that temporarily run things here

And are you sure the world spins around? Sherri Shephard says its flat. And if she's a Barbara Walters sidekick well she may just have 6 toes like Oprah and know something you don't

Well in any case be sure to say a prayer for the fallen. Many will join you. But few will realize how you are mocking them

And remember mocking is parody. Parody is imitation. And imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. So be flattered by my post. You can enjoy your liberty and I'll enjoy my freedom. At least until the real terrorists think they have won and then fail, again, as always. Funny how that happens. It is almost as if some force somewhere is somehow undermining all the hard work of so many. Maybe its God mocking them?

It's unfortunate Western victims usually seem to be innocent. Read Hegemony or Survival by Chomsky, open your eyes.

Charlie Hedo's (and other newspapers) sensei, Canard Enchaîné, is still alive and kickin'. It's motto is "Freedom of Speech wears only if one doesn't use it". So why try to not "offend" some peoples ? One starts with radical muslims, and soon enough you will find that Obamacare workers, drone operators, politicians, GS vice-presidents and so on can also be offended by what they sometime read. Will they also have the possibility to censor newspapers ? Or worse, is this possibility reserved to violent groups that threaten to kill anyone who doesn't agree ?

More particularly, some peoples have some "honor" issues related to a guy in their tribe, but more generally, think that their tribal sense of honor (some measure of social status within that tribe) is more important than another man or woman's life. All those who say that one shouldn't upset 1.8 billion muslims says:

    a) that every muslims still has this "tribal" outlook, which is at odds with what happens in muslim countries

    b) that this tribal outlook should be integrated in our democratic outlook, which could only serve to diminish it

    "A War on Freedom?"

Yes there is a war on freedom. By their own admission, many influential Islamists (read: Islamic loudmouths) do not accept freedom of speech because Islam is a hard-line totalitarian religion. If calling it a religion is not missing the point that it's simply a front for savage despotism.

Whether we realise it or not, what's creeping in, jackboot-by-jackboot, in Western nations is little different to that except on scale and extremism. But give it time.

The endless stream of anti-liberty, hate crime laws and all sorts of other garbage laws in the West are all intended to "impose compliance" to the despotic State and its backers/funders.

The way Mao ran China and Pol Pot ran Cambodia identified those who ridicule the ruling elites and who worry the elites so much are the educated, intelligent and thoughtful members of society. The "free thinkers" among us. Mao and Pol Pot marked them out. They were ruthlessly eliminated.

This is slowly happening in the West. See the manic attacks on whistleblowers like Edward Snowden and others. See the laws passed in many countries which outlaw any criticism or revelation of truth about jews. It is slowly becoming unlawful to utter the truth.

Let's call it what it is/was, three islamic men who killed people at a newspaper for portraying thier diety and savior as gay and other vile situations.  Over the past two decades many authors have had to hide and be placed in witness protection throughtout the world because they slammed the Muslim faith.  Freedom of speech carries with it responsibility.  The murders are not acts of terrorism the media so portrays it to be but an act of revenge.  Now our media and politicians want to make this out to be more then it ever was.  I thought the sheeple in the USA were dumb.  The French are marching right into the political elites hands and will allow more of their rights to be taken away after this incident.  Beware everyone as there may well be a sleeper cell next door.

Hubris at the newspaper caused the incident to happen because they are in France and this will never happen here.  I am not shocked this happened at all.  The Islamic faith has a double standard.  Fuck with our diety and we shall kill you, but it is ok for us to do the same thing to your diety.  Religion spreading peace and love for one another left the planet centuries ago.  Making this out to be a terrorist attack quite frankly is a joke being played on people so they can now impose even more draconian measures on you and I.

When one plays with fire sooner or later they are going to get burned.  These murders sadden me and I am glad the culprits were brought down for their heinous acts.  Having said this, these were not terrorist attacks.

Buckaroo I do not blame the victims at all.  If we could have a face to face discussion you would understand better then the typed word.  Freedom of speech has consequences.  The same newspaper did not get the hint the first time when the newspaper was fire bombed and all the death threats after publisking the first cartoon over a year ago.  You do not fuck with allah and mohammed in cartoon form protraying them as gay and whacko.  Do I agree with them being killed NO WAY!  I stated that in my first post.

This was a targeted killing of those that would not stop publishing profane cartoons about the muslim dieties so no it was not terrorism but a target revenge killing.  Most likely sanctioned by many Mullahs if the whole story comes out.  If my office was fire bombed I would have gotten the message the first time.  If I chose to continue to publish the cartoons I know I was now a target.  That is the risk one takes with freedom of speech.  Many have died to preserve it and these people paid the ultimate price for it.

Pot calls kettle black. Recognize the learned bias.

The US sends (and has sent) drones to assassinate those who are secretly declared to be "supporting terror" by spreading hateful "propaganda" which incites "violence".

What IF some other nation or group had the wherewithal to send its drones with military impunity

and had droned the Paris Hebdo to "target" known "radicals" with some predictably unfortunate but nonetheless acceptable "collateral damage" ...

It might seem that the problem, for some, boils down to whether drones are used.

after 9-11-2001, Americas politicians declared war on terror, which 100% of the worlds population were behind them.

there's terror everywhere, there's political terror, financial terror, religious terror, govt. terror, which terror are we going to be at war on?

the govt. will let you know which terror we're at war with, and when, but it looks as if we're going to wage war on terror, hat isn't terror until terrorism is used by terrorist to terrorize some one on the govt's list.

9-11-2001, by the end of the day, all terrorist were dead, so  with no terrorist, there can't be terror, we won before we started.

ft. hood, govt. deemed it, as, workplace violence, looked a lot like terror, but we'll take a win when we can get it.

now we'll sit back as France, and wait for the next terrorism to be used by a terrorist, to break-out into terror, (govt. approved), so we can go to war once again, depending on the govt.'s call.
