US Ally Saudi Arabia Lashes Blogger 1000 Times For "Islam Insult"

Tyler Durden's picture

Having topped the charts for beheadings in 2014, and enforced gender segregation, US ally Saudi Arabia has decided that free-speech is 'practically' punishable by death. During a week when 'free speech' is being defended by every Western nation desparate to condemn the terrorist acts against France's satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo, it is therefore quite stunning that, as The BBC reports, Raif Badawi - a Saudi Arabian blogger - was sentenced to 1,000 lashes (carried out over 50 weekly floggings), and 10 years in jail for insulting Islam. With 'friends' like this, who needs enemies?

As The BBC reports,

A Saudi Arabian blogger has been publicly flogged after being convicted of cybercrime and insulting Islam, reports say.

Raif Badawi, who was sentenced to 1,000 lashes and 10 years in jail, was flogged 50 times. The flogging will be carried out weekly, campaigners say.

Mr Badawi, the co-founder of a now banned website called the Liberal Saudi Network, was arrested in 2012.

In addition to his sentence, Mr Badawi was ordered to pay a fine of 1 million riyals ($266,000; £175,000).

In 2013 he was cleared of apostasy, which could have carried a death sentence.

Last year Mr Badawi's lawyer was sentenced to 15 years in prison after being found guilty of a range of offences in an anti-terrorism court, the Associated Press news agency reported.

The flogging took place outside a mosque in the Red Sea city of Jeddah after Friday prayers, witnesses said.

AFP news agency, quoting people at the scene, said Mr Badawi arrived at the mosque in a police car and had the charges read out to him in front of a crowd.

He was then made to stand with his back to onlookers and whipped, though he remained silent, the witnesses said.

The sentence was widely condemned by human rights groups.

"The flogging of Raif Badawi is a vicious act of cruelty which is prohibited under international law," said Said Boumedouha of Amnesty International.

"By ignoring international calls to cancel the flogging Saudi Arabia's authorities have demonstrated an abhorrent disregard for the most basic human rights principles."

Saudi Arabia enforces a strict version of Islamic law and does not tolerate political dissent. It has some of the highest social media usage rates in the region, and has cracked down on domestic online criticism, imposing harsh punishments.

*  *  *

Rights groups condemned his conviction and the US appealed for clemency...

On
Thursday state department spokeswoman Jen Psaki urged the Saudi
authorities to "cancel this brutal punishment" and to review his case.

*  *  *

Still as long the Saudis keep pressure on Russia (oops and The US Shale industry) and keep bombing Syria, what's a flogging or behading here or there between friends?

50 lashes?   In the old Royal Navy that would have killed a man.   In Malaysia the bamboo canes they use could kill a man with even 10 lashes.

What are they whipping him with, shoelaces?

Religion is something of a virulent disease to humanity. It actively tries to turn the working class against itself, it openly advocates the discrimination of women, LGBT people and non-believers, and it has a profound regressive effect on education and social progress.

Is Muhammad such a candy ass that he can't handle a little insult now and then? Seriously, the more I hear of this religion of peace, the more I think that their prophet can't even withstand a little investigation. And if people pull back the veil, they might find there is nothing but nothing to Muhammad...

@SumTingWong:  Just because we are being spoon-fed a narrative by mainstream media does not mean it is even partly true, whether the topic at hand is corporate marketing, international banking, state-sponsored terrorism or changing weather cycles.  Too many sleazy individuals and groups are spending vast fortunes on think tanks with an explicit agenda to find new and improved ways to manipulate the masses.  Protection of your mind requires study of the tools and purveyors of propaganda (example).  Mature interpretation of current affairs requires a better explanation than "The gobble-uns'll getcha ef you don't watch out."  Who pulls the strings of the gobble-uns?  Why does the hand of the state behave foolishly?  Why is the public shielded from essential details and even threatened for asking important questions?

We know less about this event than we do about the real story behind last week's staged "Je Suis Charlie" bullshit.  All we know is that authorities have a rolodex of bogeymen, flip through them every few weeks, and since the black card is a little tired, the latest ot be ramped up is "Muslim Extremism."  One can usually pick out reasons for the timing. For example, relations with the Saudi Royals appear to be breaking down lately. Why hasn't this kind of thing gotten more attention over the last few decades of Saudi-US 'friendship?'

Race, Religion, Country.

The three key concepts to keep the sheople fighting each other instead of going after the controlling psychopaths.

Works every time.

Time to wake the fuck up.

Those "psychopaths" are not psychopaths at all, to the contrary they know exactly what they are doing and love to be called psychopaths/madmen/illuminati because it is not a correct description, hence it works as a proper diversion of energy away from the root cause. Their modus operandi is to use emotional hot buttons on all of these three issues to further their agenda: pit races, religions and countries against each other. Always brother against brother, every single time.

This issue has little to do with religion however. At thec core it has everything to do with survival, power and politics. Islam is a useful ideological tool for the government of Saudi Arabia, but it does not need it, as long as the US military backs them up and stifles any dissent, foreign or domestic.

The reference to religious insult also fits into the "tolerance" narrative of much of corporate media, i.e. "tolerate" (accept) things you do not like because you must "tolerate" (accept) = a tautology (standard logical fallacy built on appeal to emotions).

As always, key question must be, who benefits from this and who pays. And, what would it cost to actually move the chess pieces on the board to a substantial extent.

A safe bet is, that if you just criticise the government there without any reference to religion, you would probably be charged with insulting Islam as well. "God lives on earth, they say, and I am his representative, bow before me." - That old trick seems to work every single time.

In the West hetero peoples are ostracized by the government.

Feminism killed masculinity and the right of men.

A women can imprison you with a false rape accusation, can make you a slave by divorcing you, taking half of your shit and a child support.

If you lose your job and can't pay you Child support you go to prison.

The education system favors female mind so now more than 80% of drop out are male.

More than 60-70% of college student are now female (wonder now why it's totally fucked up).

Any male sexuality is shamed or deemed creep while female one is empowerment.

And so on.

I went through the English grammar school system in the late 60's

Been there, had it too. Same era I note.

Even then the lesser "Secondary Schools" - also known as "Comprehensive" Schools, had mostly banned corporal punishment, but the Grammar School system just carried on.

I often wonder if this was 'cause the parents of those in the Comprehensive system were at the "lower end" of the social scale, and might not have taken too kindly to their kids being beaten (i.e. might have decided to take "affirmative action" against the system), whereas the parents of the Grammar school kids were (generally) part of the "Management" set, and were quite happy with the idea of violence being used to "instil obedience". Can't have independent actions, especially in the "Seen, not heard" children, can we . . . . .

You know, God is supposed to be the only one who can judge. No matter what you learned in Enlistment or the Military...

Christians make this mistake 90% of the time. You can judge who is around your kids, you can judge who is elected to office or serves local government, you can judge who you date or marry,... but there is a limit, a point where your words put people in danger, you hurt their reputation or work life... blah blah.

But I admit when I pressed send, I knew It was a reach too far for the post. I'm just flashy that way.

What better way to sow the seeds of division, animus and hatred than to daily incite acts that encourage them around the globe through violent and deadly actions of every possible means using race, color, religion, creed, ethnicity, ancestry, national origin, sexual orientation, marital status, role in the big play, age and disability to maximize it

I send out my universal love to each and every one of you and all entities and forms of creature in all dimensions that truly seek peace, unity and actively seek to do no harm. We will not find this anywhere on this planet in its current condition as long as the instigators of chaos are everywhere. And are so brazen to broadcast subtle, even at times overt messages, yet hide in the dark like vermin all the while proclaiming to seek the light

So, in order to effect change you can believe in, we have actively been working on a global initiative that will expose the truth and shine the one true light everywhere. This requires your actively participation. And as a result you will know the truth and the truth shall make you free

"Either you are with us or you are with the terrorists"

Never have more true words been spoken if you can see the light. It's just a matter of discerning what is the source of true light of the messenger. And since globalist satanists serve the dark star or false light they say the opposite of what they mean forwards and the truth backwards. And now you know what the quote above means forward and why "Yes, We Can" is thank you satan backwards. I only thought it fair to use one red and one blue example so as not to offend either side of the currently misled unenlightened false paradigm. We look forward to a bright and shiny lunar year of the sheep

One lash cuts the skin open and leaves a permanent scar, worse if the recipient is prone to keloids.  Singapore uses the lash for such things as overstaying a visa (for Third Worlders), and the scarred---horrifically scarred---are all over SE Asia.  If this guy gets 1000, he’ll be pure scar, if he survives.

Our “ally” Saudi Arabia, the very center of the Koran Belt, continues to this day to have a law stating that the practice of any faith other than Islam is punishable by death via public beheading.  There are no churches in Saudi Arabia.  The importation or possession of a Bible, Torah, Teachings of Buddha, etc. is against the law.  In addition, government checkpoints on the roads to Mecca or Medina stop all cars and demand proof of Islamic faith.  Non-Moslems are prohibited entry to anywhere near the cities.  The Saudis are nice enough to post highway signs in various languages warning of the upcoming “Non-Moslem turn-off Ahead”.

Those who grow up in the country are taught that any belief other than Islam is so vile that it requires the literal sword of the government to keep the nation pure.  It is hardly surprising that the country produces many jihadis.  Ron Paul and others with no actual experience in the ME can claim all they want that radical Islam is solely the result of US and Western foreign policy, but that is incomplete at best and woefully naïve at worst.  The US could denounce Israel today, pull out completely from the ME, and bring back to life anyone harmed by US actions, and the Islamic radicals would still take aim at “infidels” in the West.

Not only does the USG not take Saudi to task for maintaining such laws and allowing Saudis to be inculcated with this sort of hatred, but not a single so-called Islamic moderate takes exception to these laws.  They all still go on Hajj or Umra, and take offense if Switzerland bans the construction of new minarets or France bans the burka.  The government of Saudi Arabia has funded the construction of mosques around the world, including one that can be seen from the Vatican.  Churches in Saudi, however, are "harram".

Heck of an ally.

What's even worse is that the Saudis actively fund Islamic schools known as madrassas all over the Moslem world. The really bad part of this is that these "schools" exclusively teach the violent fundamentalist branch of islam know as wahhabism. Essentially they are breeding grounds for radicals, pushed all over the world by our "friends" the saudi ruling class. Boys go to these sad excuses for schools and the entire curiculem consistes of reading and memorizing the koran and listening to radical mullahs preach.

Absolutely correct ! I have been all over the world, including the massively over-bred islamic scum population centers and have seen that even in the poorest places, where there is zero infrastructure, including NO schools teaching anything useful, there is ALWAYS a gleaming mosque paid for by the saudis where the locals can be brainwashed starting from first ability to listen. If you look inside you will see them memorizing the koran, the ONLY subject taught.

“Ron Paul and others with no actual experience in the ME can claim all they want that radical Islam is solely the result of US and Western foreign policy”

Ron Paul is a simple-minded buffoon. If islamic terror, oppression, conquest, enslavement, rape, forcible conversion to islamic cult, etc are the result of USA’s policies, then WHY have the islamic cult worshipers been practicing these behaviors FOR CENTURIES BEFORE THE USA EVEN EXISTED ??????

Those who blame the USA should be forced to learn the history of the islamic cult and how it was spread by force and conquest – the islamic cult worshipers almost exterminated the Buddhists and Buddhism in India, it survived only up in the Himalyas.

Saudi hell is the epicenter of the islamic cult. USA should reverse the spread  of the islamic cult by conquering all the islamic territories that have resources and forcing the occupants to either convert to Buddhism or be executed.

Yep, the US govt won't even ban their oil being dumped under market at the expense of people here in the US working to produce what is needed right here.  The US allows these creeps to sell their oil cheap and economically lash others who made investments based on lies told by these people.  What does our govt do?  It sanctions this behavior as well as behavior by these people that harms it's own citizens which makes the govt the enemy of it's citizens. If the US govt is trying to hurt Putin with the oil "weapon", then by extension it's purposely and intentionally doing the same to it's own citizens who are hurt by low oil.  Why should people have any loyalty or allegience to a govt that knowingly harms them when they have not harmed anyone?

Knowing what Saudi Arabia is, and criticizing them using a blog that does not assure your anonymity, especially while living in the country, sort of invites punishment. The Founding Fathers were certainly going to cause a ruckus with England. They did not sit on the lawn in Philadelphia and listen to rebellious speeches. They huddled in a stuffy building on hot muggy days - closing the windows and drapes so that they would not be overhead by the British. When they criticized the King they invented pen names to use on their letters and books. You can be a famous anti-Saudi blogger - but not for long. Or you can be a member of Fight Club, and go on forever.
