The highest incarceration rate in the world - 740 per 100,000 compared to about 50 in Japan and Sweden and 30 in India.  4.3% of the world's population and more than 25% of its prisoners.

More women prisoners in the land of the free than China, Russia and India combined.

USA has slightly more jails and prisons in the U.S. -- 5,000 plus -- than we do degree-granting colleges and universities. In many parts of America, particularly the South, there are more people living in prisons than on college campuses.

Japan and Sweden are homogenous populations.

If you subtract out the USA's illegal alien inmates (~13%):

http://blogs.sacbee.com/capitolalertlatest/2010/01/corrections-sta.html

and racial minorites (75%):

http://www.ppic.org/main/publication_show.asp?i=702

Our incarceration rates are much closer to other homogenous populations.

As for India:... there's nothing there for criminals to steal...

A lot of countries save money on prisons by sending their criminals to the U.S.  The U.S. border patrolis finding up to 40% felons among the apprehended illegal immigrants. M thinks the solution is for every state to bus their criminals to Washington DC to join the criminals in government.

You are correct! And the stupid war on drugs is responsible for over half of all arrests and incarcerations. Petty, non violent drug users are swept up by armies of cops and drug agents and thrown into for profit prisons. The war on drugs provides tens of thousands of high paying government jobs, from local cops to high level drug agents in Washington DC. In most cases they leave the top drug lords and major trafficers alone, letting the US banks launder tens of billions for profit. But out on the streets where normal people live, tens of thousands of drug cops and agents, all collecting huge salaries, are busting 100's of thousands of teenagers, young adults, college students, poor people and seriously ill addicts. Filling jails and prisons, where more high paying jobs as jailers can be found.

80% of drug arrests could be dealt with cheaply with treatment and in house arrest for seroius amounts. As a libertarian, I resent government demanding power over my body, they own me, if I want to  smoke a joint on Saturday and sit back and watch football, they are ready to send a swat team in and arrest me for this terrible crime! Millions of honest free Americans use some small amount of a drug at one time or another. Social harm is limited, and for addicts, treatment and home arrest is much cheaper. But government agents would lose their high paying cop jobs. And government would have to admit our bodies belong to us. I piss on the liars and crooks who are our overpaid government and their overpaid agents. We don't need 90% of them. The really serious drug criminals, fine! The 10% left can deal with them. Freedom isn't free, not is it available in the United States of Police.

You hit it. Some things just can't be explained away like marijuana a class 1 drug. Everything is about profit and control. The "war" on drugs has been the most expensive, failed policy (successful in the minds of others) the USA has embarked on and is making profit for many including prisons. I don't condone anything but can't judge anyone either, God does that.

The way to handle drugs is to legalize but have harsh, harsh penalties for hurting someone, driving, etc. while intoxicated. It would have to be handled ethically which is a tall task anyway.

Use tax revenue to educate kids on the dangers of drugs and help those that want to get off the stuff. Of course this would hurt the standard of living for some making huge profits so we can't have that.

Nice rant, Jack.
Rest assured that it will grow much, MUCH worse as the unfortunate backlash against law enforcement commences. The only thing that a tyrannical, out-of-control government understands is proportional and overwhelming force. If law enforcement has decided that they have declared WAR upon the Amerikan people, then WAR is what they will get.
I worked as a paid firefighter in my younger years, and I had a tremendous amount of respect for the LEO profession back in those days. An ugly transformation has occurred during the last 20 years, and I have absolutely no sympathy for law enforcement when violent resistance to their tyranny is encountered. They are clearly not invincible to equal or overwhelming resistance, and I believe that this country is only in the beginning stages of a backlash that will rip this nation apart.

The .1% need to do something with all the young guys after enormously enriching themselves in sending all their jobs to China. We can hang them in cages, in irons, or in chains from public fixtures around bridges or Government Buildings... But that would not change the length of their bodies... Zionist or Bankers or Government Contractors or Wall Street Bankers...

If we chain them over a 4 sided pyramid, a 3 sided pyramid under their ass... well that can seem to change the shape of the body.

The only difference between jail and the rest of America is that the latter are not locked up at night.

The so called freebies of the jail system are nothing that any sane individual would aspire to.

The jail system in America is a sad indictment of what America has become........a very sick empire that is held together only by its counterfeit money and its military.

And here is the other rub: The DC US has more POLITICAL prisoners than any other nation in the world, including China.

A crime that does not involve aggression or violation of another's Life, Liberty, and/or Property, and therefore has no victim, is NOT a crime. A crime that only has the governmnet claiming victim hood and no one's Life, Liberty, and/or Property has been aggressed against, is, by definition, a political crime--a crime against the governmnet, not against an individual.

Most prisoners in the DC US' jails and prisons, the PIC, are there for the above political type crimes. Things like drugs, taxes, "laundering" money, etc. Therefore, the DC US has more political criminals in their gulags then any other nation in the world.

Now add in that a lot of murders and violence are perpetrated by those in involved in the politically illegal drug trade, and we can expand our analysis further.

Good morning, welcome to the police-state. Put your dignity in the barrel on the left, and your humanity in the one on the right.

The banksters need to repay us.

Revolution starts with realization of what is no longer bearable.

"But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security..."

Anyone who has ever spent a night in jail would not want to return, no matter if there is free food and a roof.

We talk about liberty a lot on this site, but when someone tells you when to get up, eat, when the lights go out, when you can exercise, who your roomate will be, that aint freedom folks, that is caged, like chickens in a pen.

I think the experience screws up minds and people.  It is not about rehabilitation at all, it is straight up punishment.

They call it a debt to society an inmate needs to repay.  What debt?  If someone is caught for all the offenses they can throw a person in jail for, it isn't affecting me one way or the other.  People who do desperate things are going to do them anyway, jail or death sentence isn't going to stop them.

Q of the D -

In the Law of Moses, how many jails cells are supposed to be built?

NONE

The penalties in the LAW are paying 7X for theft or property destruction, or being executed for violent crimes, murder, and some other "offenses". Of course, there is the Ceremonial Law about bathing and getting rid of molds, but that's for another day.

For God, violence was met with physical penalties and non-violent crimes were satisifed by cash or enforced service. No Jails. And there's nothing about "drugs" except for the good advice of avoiding the "sorcerers" (apothokos) in the New Testament.

But, in the good 'ol USSA, we know there's big money in contractor jails and large police forces. Afterall, we must be protected from ourselves by Nanny State.

I think a better idea would be to throw YOU in jail and then see if you stick with that mindset. I'm sure the NSA could come up with a couple felonies just tracking you closely for a month or so. By the way all your assets and property will be seized upon arrest and you will only be entitled to governemnt-provided legal 'counsel'.

We're all criminals thanks to exponential growth in complex regulations, laws, rules, bylaws, you name it. In the end it comes down to who gets caught/charged/convicted (selective enforcement). Hint: It's not Wall Street.
