"Leisure vs Labor" The Difference Between "Non-Employed" Men & Women

Tyler Durden's picture

We already know that "men are from Mars, and women from Venus". We have been shown that in America, for the poor and working class, "work is punished." And we also know how Americans overall spend their day - less work, more sleep and TV. Now, it is time to bring these cohorts together, to show, as The NY Times explains, how non-employed men and non-employed women (in the prime-age 25-54 segment) spend their day... (spoiler alert: shopping, TV, and housework are key... job search not so much)

How non-employed Americans spend their day (men vs women)

click image for large legible version

As The NY Times notes,

Every year, the American Time Use Survey asks thousands of Americans to record a minute-by-minute account of one single day. For many “prime-age” adults, those between the ages of 25 and 54, a significant chunk of time on weekdays is taken up by work. But for the almost 30 million prime-age Americans who don’t work, a typical weekday looks far different.

Nonworkers spend much more time doing housework. Men without jobs, in particular, spend more time watching television, while women without jobs spend more time taking care of others. And the nonemployed of both sexes spend more time sleeping than their employed counterparts.

The charts above show the 'average' non-employed person's day... But averages are by nature a simplification, one that can sometimes obscure reality. For example, in the chart above, you can see that from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., about 10 percent of men are consistently spending time on education. That could mean that many men spend a small portion of their days — albeit at different times — on education, or it could mean that about 10 percent of men spend nearly all of their time on education.

(The reality is much closer to the latter, as The NY Times explains... read more here)

Extra sleep is good for you. I sleep 9-10 hours on a regular schedule.

Extended sleep improves the athletic performance of collegiate basketball players

DARIEN, Ill. - A study in the July 1 issue of the journal SLEEP shows that sleep extension is beneficial to athletic performance, reaction time, vigor, fatigue and mood in collegiate basketball players. The study is the first to document sleep extension and the athletic performance of actively competing athletes.

Results of objective measurements show that the mean total sleep time per night during sleep extension was 110.9 minutes longer than at baseline. Indices of athletic performance specific to basketball were measured after every practice to assess changes in performance. Speed during 282-foot sprints improved significantly from 16.2 seconds at baseline to 15.5 seconds after sleep extension, and shooting accuracy increased significantly by nine percent on both free throws and three-point field goals. Subjects also reported improved overall ratings of physical and mental well-being during practices and games.

"Following multiple weeks of sleep extension, elite athletes demonstrated improvements in specific indicators of basketball athletic performance including higher shooting percentages and faster sprint times," said lead author Cheri D. Mah, MS, researcher at the Stanford Sleep Disorders Clinic and Research Laboratory in Stanford, Calif. "Subjects also demonstrated faster reaction time, decreased levels of daytime sleepiness, and mood improvements."

The study involved 11 healthy students on the Stanford University men's varsity basketball team and was conducted during two basketball seasons from 2005 to 2008. Participants had a mean age of 19 years and an average height of about six feet and four inches. Eight of the players were guards, two were forwards and one was a center.

When I was still working in the US, I had to work close to 7 months in order to just pay my Federal, State and Local taxes... So who are the smart ones? The people like me that has a work ethic or those that suck on the government tit? Is it any wonder new business creation is at an all time low, along with the labor participation rate? I think not...

The demeaning system of domination I've described rules over half the waking hours of a majority of women and the vast majority of men for decades, for most of their lifespans. For certain purposes it's not too misleading to call our system democracy or capitalism or -- better still -- industrialism, but its real names are factory fascism and office oligarchy. Anybody who says these people are "free" is lying or stupid. You are what you do. If you do boring, stupid monotonous work, chances are you'll end up boring, stupid and monotonous. Work is a much better explanation for the creeping cretinization all around us than even such significant moronizing mechanisms as television and education. People who are regimented all their lives, handed off to work from school and bracketed by the family in the beginning and the nursing home at the end, are habituated to heirarchy and psychologically enslaved. Their aptitude for autonomy is so atrophied that their fear of freedom is among their few rationally grounded phobias. Their obedience training at work carries over into the families *they* start, thus reproducing the system in more ways than one, and into politics, culture and everything else. Once you drain the vitality from people at work, they'll likely submit to heirarchy and expertise in everything. They're used to it.

I will never get used to that idea. Seeing people receive my money for not working is enormously demotivating for me. Same when I see banksters profit as they rape the western world. Perhaps the eastern as well ( above my pay grade).

So I sit here and watch TV....and I am a 3%-er business owner. Me sitting here, not "producing" can't be good.

no more banksters,

Good article at the link, but the article also illustrates why people really need to acquirer an ideology foundation much like religions do. Christians* for example have a few foundational tenets, which then inform, or at least are supposed to, inform all other beliefs and actions.

Foundational tenets allow one to see through attempts to waylay a person with nonsense, lies, bullshit, spin, and/or misdirection.

An example of operating without basic tenets is a friend of mine's conflicting views (cognitive dissonance). He knows 9/11 was an inside job. Knows better than me, and yet holds that Muslims are the enemy because the perpetrators of 9/11, those he knows are liars and murderers, told him so. He is adamant about free speech, but so hates "liberals" that he thought the police-state should have attacked, jailed and killed as many of the Occupy folks as possible. He's operating without basic tenets, and as a result he is easily thrown off course. Note: It is not that his views differ with mine, but why they differ, that so alarms me.

Foundational tenets should also be monitored continuously  for nonconformities that indicate that one, or all of them, are incorrect, or at least partially incorrect. Opposing views should be sought out as well.

Some of my foundational tenets are: Life, Liberty, Property, and the Nonaggression Principle are sacrosanct. The Constitution IS still the "Law of the Land." Government, all governments, are evil incarnate....

The banksters need to repay us.

"Foundational tenets" are called axioms and are found in "philosophy" which is deliberately not taught in public education for the reasons you mention. Your owners on the other hand are quite aware of the axioms and their implications.

If people could think then they could choose their own direction.

To give an example, lets take a couple of conflicting axioms.

  1. In order to understand reality, you have to begin from nothing.
  2. In order to understand reality, it is not necessary start from nothing.

Now, there are lots of people on one side of these fundamental points of view about reality who would murder you for choosing the other.

Thank you. If I understood correctly, I think that there is an explanation about why this happens. From my point of view, societies adopted a relativistic way of thinking, away from classical terms. Progressively, we abolished ethics and values in such a degree that many times the line between good and bad, right and wrong, nearly vanishes.

A few years ago, after saving for several years from my one business that I based from my home, I opened a storefront. To do so, I had to endure being threatened, extorted, to get a "permit." The "permit" then gave them carte blanche to enter my business to "inspect" it and make demands for certain changes for "code purposes."

The gun and badge thugs then made a "courtesy visit," that was really to let me know that I could not buy anything from people that might walk in unless I had the thugs' permission, and that I was not permitted to sell certain things to certain people.

I got many a letter from the various taxing rackets who demanded that I become their tax collector, and what penalties that I would incur if I did not act as their tax collector. I was also informed of all of the taxes that my business would be subject to, which also came with more threats. I also enjoyed how they exerted more carte blanche warrant searches, audits, and/or visits, of my business, just because I had the nerve to have a business that they demanded taxes from. "You're free unless we tax you, then your ass is ours." LOL

After getting up and running, and profitable, I became so bold as to put out a feather sign on the curb to promote my business to passing motorists. "Ney, ney" said the crats that almost immediately came a calling. I could only have "approved," approved by them, signage that was parallel to and attached to my store front--nothing perpendicular was permitted. I was then given a badly photocopied copy of the town's "Regulations and Ordinances for Displays and Signage" that proved to be impenetrable reading. The crats made a big deal about how they were going to generously waive my fines--plural, fines for one feather sign.

I was then subject each year to several warrantless "inspections" where they always had me change or add something.

All of this was done at my expense while they held my capital investment and invested efforts hostage, and even threatened to "fine" me if I did not "comply."

A huffing nigger would have been much preferable to the pols, crats and funcs I was forced to endure and "smile and wave" at. And they never even thanked me for opening up a business that would benefit them so much.

The banksters need to repay us.

kchrisc, when I opened my service business the state said I don't have to collect sales tax unless I leave a product behind. Last year they sent me a letter requiring my signature, under a felony Perjury threat, if I was lying. These are the people who told me I didn't have to charge a sales tax and apparently they now don't even know their own tax laws now, but I'm under a felony Perjury threat.

"apparently they now don't even know their own tax laws now, but I'm under a felony Perjury threat."

Your assuming that they actually care. They don't.

If they are wrong about you needing to pay, you pay. If they are wrong about you not needing to pay, you pay.

Another thing is that for the crats, and pols, involved, they would like nothing better than to see you fined and/or put in jail, as it looks better on their record. And the state gets more fines, fees, and a slave for their PIC (see the 13th.)

No, they don't care.

The propaganda meme is that not only do they care but they are here to help.

This principle of propaganda extends into all of the natural disease, disaster, zombie and alien invasion movies that are repeated on the big screen.  They dramatize a benevolent military and government with expert disaster "relief" organizational skills.  The programming leads the sheeple to follow orders consentually.

Reality will appear like everything flickered on the big screen.  When satellites are knocked out of the sky. the media will call them "asteroids" or "aliens" and the sheeple will consent to marching wherever the guy in the uniform and badges tells them to go.

Within my circle of friends and acquaintances, political correctness seems to be the first thing that goes when critical thinking skills come back online. We can almost gauge how free thinking a person is by what language they insist on using.

We use "nigger" to differentiate between ignorant, and typically government subsidized blacks, and the rest of the black community. We also use "red-neck" in the same manner in regards to the white community. Not for hateful purposes, but for the sake of clarity.

Nonpolitical correct language is also a great tool to get fast into a sheeple's head--ring the bell so to speak. When you tell a housewife, guy at a garage sale, etc., "Niggers are not the only ones that are on welfare," you get their attention right quick. Now if your are being hateful, you rightfully lose them. However, if you are trying to teach them something, it seems to cut right through any filters they may have--you get their attention.

Sure, in certain settings, like at work, one has to conform, but at dinner among friends discussing the intricacies of the latest nonsense of the empire, no. Nonpolitical correct language allows free dialog, and clearer meanings, and the free exchange of idea without the worry over one's word choice.

The poster used "nigger" to provide clarity to their comment, that "African-American," or black would not have provided. If he had used, say black, I might have pictured the wonderful person, successful business owner, and black client that I have. That would have been confusing.

When you free yourself, your language becomes free. That is one reason why Orwell was so obsessed with language as a person and in his books.

The banksters need to repay us.

If you take offence so easily, you can't have very good critical thinking skills.

Banning the use of words doesn't help anyone or anything. Sorry if people who share your skin color tend to act in utterly deplorable ways. That isn't your fault, and you shouldn't take offence at epithets that aren't meant for people like you.

Note that there are no epithets for whites that will cause white people to become upset. Think about why that is. Frame it in terms of individualism vs collectivism. You have already taken steps to seperate yourself from the collective. You are very close to enlightenment here. Don't let words push you away from it.

This does not apply if you disrespect my family. That will earn a shit slap storm. Maybe it shouldn't work that way, but it does.

What if that never happens?

I am not sure.  The future looks grim but I hold out a candle of hope that the spirit of anarcho-capitalism (even as heavily tainted as we live it) will lead to the top folks going to war with each other.  Thus, we 99%ers may be able to step back and let them do such bidding.  I suspect the top folks are back-stabbers and think as you do amongst eachother.

Maybe I am naive but I bring this up because I do not want to rule out any peaceful possibility to the devolution of justice.

IF there is a peaceful strategy for the rest of us to facilitate-by-abstention what I suspect the top folks would naturally do to eachother, THEN I reckon it is worth some thought.

the worst is the shared bathroom at work. some nurse left blood all over the toilet seat. she dropped her rag on the floor right infront of the toilet.  yuk! women can be so disgusting.

i guess i should consider myself lucky, at least it wasn't a surgical pad, or dead bloody sheep.

i thought women didn't bleed like that until menapause?

geesh

Um, you've got it backwards.  Women bleed like that until menopause.  And then they stop.  It's this wierd thing involving mammalian fertility; there are some books out there.  I would ask if youve ever actually been with a woman (rather than following one around in the store, making snuffling noises), but I think I already know the answer, LOL.

Here is a handy solution.  There is a class of women who do not do this nasty bleeding thing that you find so offensive.  They are called Old Women.  You can find them at nursing homes.  They would suit you to a T.  Or you could check out another category of humans who do not bleed in a manner you find offensive; they are called Men; you may find that you vastly prefer their aroma.

Several friends of mine have adult children that have finished college, and have come back home. They are still looking for work in their chosen career field or "major", while doing menial clerical and other jobs, some of which are "under the table" cash only. The grandkids of the baby boomers are the new mexicans, working for cash under the table.

Why would somebody who is doing cash only jobs which do not pay federal and state taxes, social security and medicare actually tell the truth on a survey like this? How do they decide who the survey participants are?

147 men and 147 women surveyed are supposed to be a representative sample for 30 million unemployed? My old statistics professor would have flunked them in the blink of an eye.

Brought to you by the BLS, the worthless government pukes who come with the the unemployment rate, the CPI, and productivity gains numbers. I appreciate the effort and the info, Tyler, but most surveys like this are totally worthless, and good only for propaganda purposes. Yes, there might be a grain of truth in there somewhere, but you'd have to look pretty hard to find it.

there is no reason for a woman to be unemployed when her mouth works just fine to put food on the table for her out of wedlock kids. not only would she be gainfully employed but could spend much more time shopping and improving her skills. they have a huge advantage over men.

only gay men can use their skills self preservation as women still don't buy sex.

Since when does a man have to be gay to sell sex to men?  Plenty of straight men do it.  I don't claim they enjoy it, but then neither do all of the ladies.  Economic opportunity abounds, if you just look hard enough. /s

Last time I posted ad for entry level admin person I noticed a shit load of resumes coming in the late evening.

On closer examination the youngin's were obviously posting when they got back from the bars or night's carousing.

All of these went in the round file, but I did find a delightful large breasted young lady who has worked out wonderfully.

Point being 80% +/- 'job seekers' are not looking for work.

So instead of spending money to go back to college, young unemployed women should just get breast enhancements? Makes sense really. You'd have to think twice about not hiring an attractive young woman with big hooters.

Well, I was unemployed for three years, finally found work last month.

I applied for hundreds of jobs I was perfectly qualified for, overqualified for, and slightly under-qualified for but could do.

I applied to jobs anywhere and everywhere in the nation. I spent my time applying for jobs.  I helped out neighbors.  I helped out my friends and family.  I spent precious time with my kids.  I blogged on ZH (!).  I played XBOX 360.  I watched movies 10 years past I had missed going through a hellish divorce.  I slept in.  I took naps.  I exercised and ate well because I had zero insurance.  I sold my house.  I cashed out my retirement.

What I have after that experience is a hatred for:  Wall Street and Washington - for the lackeys, the mandarins, the equivocators, the paper-pushers, the discriminators, the money grubbing elites, the seemingly paralyzed members of law enforcement who can't seem to prosecute or catch scum like Jon Corzine but will shoot an unarmed Woman or Kid dead without a thought, the gutless members of the media who can't report the greatest Ponzi and death of a social contract in modern history.  I'm sure I left some spineless weasels or useless parasitic entities out of that list.

People are unemployed not because people are lazy but because they have been sold out by the nation they are supposed to pledge their allegiance and the lives of their children to.

Fuck you Washington and Wall Street, fuck you to the gates of Hell and back.

Looking for work.....or trying to find a job ?

Education is accepted as the human commodity needed, is it ?
Seems to me what is lacking is skill and pride of achievement. We have all kinds of educated, we lack productivity.

All one has to do to find work is simply find someone worse off than yourself, it is not hard, and fix their car, plumbing, roof, etc....
Just do it, it beats stimulating your emotions. If you find there is no real need in your neighborhood for your skill set, in other words there is not much you can do to help a neighbor, family member, develop that skill and repeat it till your good at it.  Window glazing is a lost  art, yet it could save the elderly on their heat bills.

Point is, it starts locally....among our neighbors.

Two weeks of this, done right, and I assure you of a quality employment offer. Be surprised of the cash tips, also !!!

All things good in life is local -

I've had one unemployed or semi-employed housemate after another isolate in their rooms and watch TV nonstop, and then flip out in one way or another. One trashed the place and hit the road, one ended up in a ptsd program, one stopped talking to anyone for three weeks and moved out without telling anyone.  One even went back to his wife!  It seems very clear to me from this and from my own very brief episodes that over-watching TV is an addiction, that it is terribly destructive of mental health and that it induces severe depression and a state of hopelessness and self loathing.

An extended weeks-long power outageI would take a serious death toll, but I would nevertheless look forward to seeing it force all these zombies to emerge from their crypts and start interacting with each other.

"We are all survivors on deferral and regarding deferral, from the geopolitical viewpoint in Specters of Marx, the emphasis is especially - in a world that is more inegalitarian than ever - on the billions of living beings - human and otherwise - who are denied not only basic “human rights,” which go back two hundred years old and are continually being amplified, but are denied even the right to a live a decent life."

Pay no heed to the slogans.  They are only deflection. We like to be told that "Men are stupid and women are crazy." but that is a red herring too.

Human male-female anti-social behavior is even simpler: only women can fake it.  To be fair, women can fake it longer than men can.

There are X number of jobs available.  Whether there are 1,000 people looking for those jobs or 100,000.

Some people are so stupid, they think that looking for a job creates jobs.  Other people think wasting time is wasting time, and there is a reason so many people dropped out of the workforce.

Why do none of the politicians address the reality ?   We no longer need the expense of as many humans in the business world .

Technology makes humans redundant .  Now if you have a glut of humans , one could stop using the technology and go back to manual human labour, but that'll cost too much for the company ... so.... ?

Maybe they openly need to pay volunteers who will happily stay at home, or force early retirement so future generations can ' experience ' a job in their lifetime, or put a cap on capitlaism and fund social care. IE pay volunteers to NOT WORK.  Like the EU pay farmers ' to not grow pigs ' .  Next year I intend to expand operations and not grow twice as many pigs for a bigger profit !

not ideal as it 's a 1 1/2 drive but it's a job and could keep me afloat....They fucking call me Friday at 3:15 and tell me the person who was leaving asked if he could stay and since he has been there a few years they felt "loyal" to let him stay.....

Words don't describe how i feel...obviously the employee wasen't loyal to them ....he gave his notice....

What I see:

Men: Video games, going galt, and educating themselves (science, high tech, coding math and so on.)

Women: shopping, sleeping around ("connecting" with friends), social networking FB and twittering.

In effect, some huge difference.

Now, we will see more and more people out of the system, as the system require lesser and lesser people to run it (robotization, automation, and cheap abundant energy are the keywords).

14+ million illegals in the USA many of them working.

The simple math is that for every job an illegal takes it is a job an American does not have available.

More importantly if the illegals were sent back home (i.e. we enforce our laws) the drop of 14 million in the personnel pool would raise wages for every job in the country. Supply and demand.

It ain't ageism, its an economic depression. The employers get hundreds to thousands of responses for job postings. they thin the herd however they like. too tall, too fat, too much plaid, too high a salary, didn't like his haircut.

There are simply more people than jobs.
