In the late 60's I had my first encounter with Mad Magazine in the attic of an abandoned 'Haunted House' near my elementary school. The door was unlocked, as was the custom, and there was no damage to the house. I looked around with my friend and eventually was dared up the ladder to the attic. The attic was empty except for a pile of magazines.

There was a mix of 60's 'porn' and Mad magazines piled in the center of the otherwise empty space. Obama's mom looks pretty familiar, but at age 10 porn wasn't on my radar. Mad magazine, circa 1957, however, was the ten year old's equivalent of a wet dream.

I was a fan from then on...though disappointed with the current editions since Bill Gaines died. Still buy memorials that include Mort Druker and Don Martin and Dave Berg...not to mention Antonio Prohias and Sergio Aragones.

I'm holding this silly, clean, juvenile shit for my 'new' (ten months) grandson.

There was innocence in MAD humor, too bad we've lost so much.

I have a book titled The Mad Caricature Book by Tom Richmond which I obtained last year. It is a drawing book about caricature drawing. There were many things about Mad that I loved, the Parody Song Lyrics for example.

WB7, what's your take on Paul Schulte in the interview just prior to yours? Seems like he is convinced that political/sociological instability in your neck of the woods is primarily due to privatization. Lots of talk about the necessity of government intervention for the purpose of removing the "cartels" of industry.

He is right about the tycoon families running the town. I was not aware of the big privatization push he was referring to. Everything runs fine in HK so it is easy to overlook. However, the point about angst regarding the future is very true. And that is what drove the protests, not foreign interlopers.
