French Comedian Arrested Over Sympathizing With Charlie Hebdo Killer
Yesterday we discussed the crackdown on 'extremism' around the world (and its potential implications for freedom). Today, as The Guardian reports, notorious French comedian Dieudonné M’bala M’bala is now intimately aware of the implications, having been arrested for being an “apologist for terrorism” after suggesting on Facebook that he sympathised with one of the Paris gunmen.
As The Independent reports, French Prime Minister Manuel Valls attacked Dieudonné, calling him a "peddler of hate and said there should be no confusion between the 'impertinent' satire of Charlie Hebdo and 'anti-semitism, racism and negationism'."
In an open letter, the comedian claimed on Tuesday that he had been misunderstood.
The comedian made international headlines in 2013 when French footballer Nicolas Anelka was banned for five matches by English football authorities for using a gesture created by Dieudonné that many consider to echo the Nazi salute.
His original statement on his Facebook page was as follows:
“After this historic, no legendary, march, a magic moment equal to the Big Bang which created the Universe, or in a smaller (more local) way comparable to the crowning of the (ancient Gaullish king) Vercingétorix, I am going home. Let me say that this evening, as far as I am concerned, I feel I am Charlie Coulibaly."
What he had meant to say on Facebook, he said, was that "I am considered like another Amedy Coulibaly when in fact I am no different from Charlie."

I thought this whole handwringing circus was about "Freedom of Speech". /BIG FUCKING SARC.
Seriously, who the hell owns France? This is the country that was rightly reviled for refusing their airspace to the Bolivian president's plane so that it could be forced to land in Vienna to search for Edward Snowden in 2013. Yet, the Israeli president can just pop over and land on French soil UNINVITED, despite being told not to come, to have a little circus of his own to reap the benefits of another terror related event. I've never heard of such a thing. Cleared for French airspace, cleared for landing, then cleared for diplomatic security on the streets of Paris against the wishes of the French president himself. Makes it easy to spot who actually runs things in France.
It was only a few years ago that most of the members of the knesset and IDF were afraid of landing in the EU for fear of being arrested for crimes against humanity. Now they dictate whatever the hell they like. Terrorism certainly has been good for the Israelis.

Fortunately, M. Valls’ attempt at smear tactics didn’t have the desired effect…

Hey, I believe in Freedom of Speech, and I've been dumb enough to actually try it. I believe that obnoxious speech requires particular protection, because nobody tries to suppress popular, pleasing speech.
But I"m not Charlie. And I don't like it when I feel like I'm being "positioned."
There's a long list of freedoms which I insist upon, but choose not to exercise. Let's face it, the Charlie Hebdo guys have been assholes to the Muslims, and they've been doing it on purpose to get a reaction. 99.99999% of Muslims didn't do anything about it because that's the proportion of any group of people that isn't crazed killers. Most people opposed to abortions don't stalk and kill obstetricians, but there are some who do.
It isn't a binary choice. You don't have to either "Be Charlie" or support psychopathic killers. We're being herded in a direction here. I can support freedom of speech, oppose murder, and still say the Charlie Hebdo guys were being assholes. I can say Osama bin Laden was right about America, that the US has treated the Muslim world horribly, that Osama bin Laden and the Al Quaeda guys are monsters, and not be contradicting myself in any way.

Manuel Valls clearly wants to capitalize on this special "timing window" to "finish" dieudonné once and for all, like a previous commenter very well said.
But putting him in prison is a dangerous bet by Manuel Valls because that could very well radicalize the part of french population who is awake and who follow Dieudo (this percentage of french is rizing fast, too fast for the elite)
