Dramatic Drone Footage Showing The Devastation At The Donetsk Airport

Tyler Durden's picture

Over the past few days there has been renewed, large-scale fighting over the airport in Donetsk. Now, after months of almost non-stop shelling there is almost nothing left of what was a previously a new, modern facility. As Conflict-News reports, this video shot by a Ukrainian activity group using a multicopter drone gives the viewer a birds-eye view of the ruins of what was once Donetsk International Airport.

It shows not just the damage to the buildings and planes housed there, but also the scars of months of battles, including ruined amoured vehicles.

And there are no signs of it easing tonight...

That is not a Russian Army MLRS.  The Russian Army is not in Donesk.  It is not even in Ukraine.  The West just can't tell the dam truth about anything.  Even if that was  Russian Army MLRS, how the Hell can you tell from 2 miles away who is operating it?

Those rockets almost certainly came from a Grad launcher operated by the defenders of Donetsk (a city of about 1 million people so pretty big) and looked to be a complete 'package' of 20 rounds.

Not good to be in the Ukrainian Army on the receiving end of that lot, but then they have been randomly shelling the city for weeks.

Strategic choices are always ugly. Standing alone in a strategic conflict in Asia would be far far uglier for Australia, hence the choice made. Malcombe also ignores the fact that Australia has been actively diversifying its relations and strategic links.

What I pointed out recently:

http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2015-01-11/saudi-prince-warns-we-will-not-...

This BRICS term is being extended too far. It's no monolith (I'm sure you know that, humor me).

India is not welded into some trade-block or some strategic arrangement in that group, nor is Brazil. It's not the valid way to look at all these countries in geo-strategic context. It is a basket useful to market and economic forecasts, maybe, in contrast to others.

That's about it.

China signed a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Agreement (including free trade agreement finalization) with Australia right after the G20 in November 2014.

US and European posters and commentators should take this on board. China is now a formal part of the Western strategic partnership picture, and that relationship is going to expand rapidly from here.

India is already extremely well disposed towards the West. India, in November, also said it was going to negotiate a free trade deal and strategic partnership with Australia, ASAP.

So the picture with these (biggest of) countries, in relation to the West, has evolved very significantly, in the past few months, financially, economically and strategically.

The strategic concerns of these countries meet and focus through South East Asia, and it's powered by ME and rapidly expanding Australian energy reserves. That's where their primary strategic future lays, that's what makes them tick, so keep it in mind.

Russia is going to become increasingly important to China, of course, as a major energy supplier (and neighbor), but Beijing is making it very clear that it intends to diversify its relations and its energy and resource options, and has now very boldly hitched itself to a Strategic Partnering with Australia. China really could do no less after its major competitors Japan, and South Korea, signed extremely generous free trade agreements with Australia earlier last year. If China was not in that game it would have had to pay much more for minerals and energy than Japan and S Korea.

So now the Pressure is on India to catch up, for the same economic competitveness and market access reasons.

Australia has not changed its relations with the US one bit and it is not going to.

China knows this and accepts it completely as a fact of equal weight within this China-Australia Strategic partnership.

In other words, China, Australia and the US just became a lot closer, Strategically, in terms of shared interests and aims.

Take note:

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2014-07-18/chinese-troops-to-train-with-austr...

http://www.stripes.com/news/chinese-troops-training-with-us-australia-in...

Reading (excuse the Krugman quotes at the beginning):

Why China Will Not Become the Dominant Power in Asia - Security Challenges, Vol. 10, No. 3 (2014)

http://kokodafoundation.org/Resources/Documents/SC10-3DibbLee.pdf

There is already Strategic change, a tsunami of it, but there are limits and Australia will not be distancing itself from the US as it's a strategic choice which remains a no-brainer. I don't see it changing, the Pacific and Indian basins and Asian geography require this alliance. It will remain for the rest of the century in one form or another. Even more wealth, more arms, and the acquisition of an independently deliverable nuclear arsenal would not change the defense and strategic imperatives to remain committed to Alliance with the US.

Plus every time a Federal Labor socialist govt gets in they gut the defense budget (after promising they will increase it and absolutely not cut it) and grossly mis-manage all projects, ensuring Australia is never strong enough to stand apart from the US Alliance's reliance, or to have an independent foreign policy.

This is the often ignored aspect and by far the greatest impediment to implementing Frazer's argument, as we will never be able to trust the socialist lunatics and greens to not shit-can and derail the ADF defense capability development at every possible opportunity.

It's what they do.

Element - You seem intent on confirming a peculiar bias in favor of Pax Americana or something similar, but reality smells much more like Brzezinski's Eurasian re-alignment. Australia should not be construed as some American appendage: I can testify from conversation that many Australians do NOT see themselves that way.  Same for India and much of the surrounding region, where the problems of the western establishment are well understood by the political class, and old postcolonial anger is renewed with each new boondoggle.  The USA, or some part thereof, has achieved lasting political utility as a bogeyman, adding a tangible, undeniable geostrategic undercurrent and sense of urgency to expanding alternative trade alliances.  How much will the process accelerate during a period of severe economic depression and disruption?

We've been reading for weeks about the psychopaths shelling civilian areas in the East. Judging by the incredible number of impact craters in this video, a lot of the shelling has been concentrated within a limited area. It would be presumptuous to conclude that it suggests an incredible waste of ammunition, firing into burned-out buildings. Rather, another purpose seems self-evident: to maintain a steady barrage for the purpose of intimidation: non-stop racket to keep people in a perpetual state of terror.

So we can call this State Sponsored Terrorism.  Who is supplying the Nazis with all this ammunition?  Whoever is behind it needs to be stopped.

Another thing: I heard that the Nazis had their natural gas supply cut off a few days ago, pending new arrangements for unpaid bills (Troika scrip, Rubles, gold, etc.).  This video gives us no indication as to the status of the local civilian population.  Are they being fed and given the essentials of life, or are the psychopaths raping and pillaging and are we about to see unprecedented humanitarian crisis in the area?  Inquiring minds want to know.

It looks bloody cold there.  If I was a Ukrainian, I would get the hell out if I could.  Maybe go to Greece!  It's milder.

Everything that the Nobel Prize Winner touches becomes a failed state.  The seven Muslin countries he has bombed are all failed states - Libya, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Syria, Iraq, Yemen and Somalia.

Over $5 billion was spent destabilizing Ukraine and it will be a failed state for decades.  Paul Craig Roberts explains America's confrontation with Russia:

Washington has been working against Russia for 22 years ever since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. In violation of the Reagan-Gorbachev agreement, Washington expanded NATO into Eastern Europe and the Baltic states and established military bases on Russia’s borders. Washington is also seeking to extend NATO into former constituent parts of Russia itself such as Georgia and Ukraine.

The only reason for Washington to establish military and missile bases on Russia’s frontiers is to negate Russia’s ability to resist Washington’s hegemony.

Yes indeed plenty of terrible shit happening and not just in Ukraine!

Not a word on either of these stories but thank god RT America has enough of a conscience to report both as the "Je suis Charlie" dominates everything as more "cover"!

Putin forced the EUkraine forces to accept the cease fire just after the EUk forces had gained a decided advantage and were posed to destroy some of the trapped WUk divisions.  The leader of the EUk forces called this a betrayal by Putin.  Putin forced the EUk army to allow safe passage for the trapped WUk forces.

The cease fire allowed the WUk forces to regroup and to be rearmed with better weapons.  Reports indicate heavy weapons have been pouring into WUk from the west in preparation for a new more overpowering offensive that could overrun the EUk forces.  While there is a problem getting new recruits into the WUk army, if the firepower and support are sufficient the EUk army is in trouble.

This serves Putins purpose somehow.

As I watched, I thought about all the people that used to work there. Baggage handlers, refueling techs, ticket agents, etc., and all the flights into and out of Donetsk.

Truly staggering when you put a human face on the video.

It is starting here, during my Aikido work out this morning, one of my partners is a deputy in Orange County (Pine Hills/Orlando) relayed a story of being shot at 7 times in an undercover sting two weeks ago. Many of the unwindings that are happening are not making the news for some reason.

Look at the video and see how destroyed the airport is, the snow is undisturbed for the most part so this happened some time ago, at least before the last good snow.

America is not going to go unscathed, as things start to warm up into the spring, you will see more and more signs of the frayed fabric the banksters have created.

There are shell holes in the snow all over the place.  It looks like there was an artillery barrage during a snow storm.  Most of the blast is covered up while the hot center melted the falling snow.  There is also some footage of more recent shelling that has discolored the snow after it fell.

Steady rain seems more like it.

The Kiev line of thought is that the separatists are causing this war because they won’t join the country of Ukraine and that any airport or home destroyed or person killed is the fault of the separatists because they are just warmongers.

So Cruickshank of Conflict-News flies over with his drone and sees all the houses and the airport destroyed, and says, what do you expect from these separatists who are causing this war?

The truth is, Kiev seized the Donetsk airport and the fighting has demolished it.

There’s enough confusion about the war in Eastern Ukraine without using Kiev analysis as the only source of information. Cruickshank is obviously pro-Kiev as his writings on his blog make clear (recent headline Are Pro-Russian Forces Beginning Another Offensive In Eastern Ukraine?”). Now, we have drone footage of the destruction but it is a report colored with Kiev sentiment.

When will we realize that the war is more than just military units against each other; it is a war of lies. And surely we have enough evidence already to show that the western assault creating and supporting this illegitimate government for Ukraine is the lie leader.

As for the Donetsk airport, I read this morning that rebels had made a new push to retake the airport from Kiev forces:

“Pro-Russian separatists continued to pound the Donetsk airport, creating an ‘epicenter of tension’ and forcing the Ukrainian military to rush in fresh troops to protect its tenuous hold on the strategically important site.”Bloomberg 5 hours ago

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2015-01-17/pro-russian-rebels-pound-ukrainian-positions-at-donetsk-airport.html

Is it anti-Semitic suspicion that Michael Cruickshank is a Jew, and therefore has a special interest in Ukraine because of the current leadership, in that he blogs on the MyJewishLearning site:

I hope, Max, that you are right and Bloomberg is wrong. I know that the separatists claimed two days ago that they had seized the Donetsk International Airport, while the Kiev government and much of the western media claimed Ukrainian troops were still holding their position.

I see, according to PressTV two days ago (Jan. 15), that Donetsk People's Republic's Alexander Zakharchenko, said, “We will not just give up our land,” saying the separatists would continue operations until they recapture all the territory lost to the troops of Ukraine.

On the other hand, the statement by Alexander Hug, the deputy head of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), which claims efforts to broker peace talks between Kiev and pro-Russia forces in eastern Ukraine, claims, according to Press TV, that pro-Russian forces’ attacks “attract counter-fire from positions opposite and other directions, which leads unfortunately to repeated civilian casualties and damage for infrastructure.”

Hug’s statement, of course, supports the Kiev propaganda position that separatists, by countering invading Ukrainian forces, are causing “civilian casualties and damage for infrastructure.”

As PressTV blogger Luka wrote:

“Mr. Hug is a LAWYER, who turned to a Swiss Army soldier. He's been on the ground in Kosovo, Hebron and at one stage a commander in war-torn Bosnia. In the days since MH17 tragedy he was the first international servant on the scene. The problem for OSCE is, has any government the right to shell the civilian territory, and are the government forces attacking its own civilian population. The fact that civilians are defending themselves is a normal reaction to the prospect of being burned alive, like in Odessa, days before the civil war started.”

There are some rumors spreading around the 'net that in February, on the anniversary of Maydan Coup, "Party of War" with Turchinov and "Yats" as leaders, could overthrow Poroshenko, declaring him traitor, blaming him for the loss of Donbass and negotiating with "terrorists". There were some serious laws passed recently in Ukraine's parliament, that transfer much of the power to the so called "National Security and Defense Board" in case the president is incapacitated or absent. Coincidentally, Turchinov is the head of NSDB. Should that happen, expect escalation of the conflict to new levels, sponsored by the State Department. US is pleased as long as the conflict is ongoing, blaming Russia for it.

Here is what I wrote almost a year ago, here on ZH:

I used operation "Storm-333" only as an example of a similar operation that theoretically could be executed in Kiev. Storm Bankova street with paratroopers, fly in Yanukovich with a helicopter, then he, as elected president of Ukraine, issues a decree dismissing the parliament (Verhovna rada), takes over the command of armed forces as supreme commander, stops the so called "Anti Terrorist Operation", arrests the clowns who thought they could get away with the coup. He can also dump all responsibility for Crimea's secession on the coup clowns, by telling that if the opposition did not violate the agreement signed between him and opposition leaders, everything would be fine. For him, it would be a win-win situation, but I doubt he would be elected for second term. But, such operation would require consent of Yanukovich himself, and I'm not sure he has the balls to come to Kiev, even under heavy protection of special forces. On the other side, he doesn't have to be in Kiev in order to issue decrees I mentioned above, he only has to be on the territory of Ukraine. If he were to return of his own, without protection of special forces, he would probably be arrested. Such operation would be very bold, and if successful, would probably save Ukraine from disintegration, and would limit Russia's military exposure to a minimum, in a sense that full-scale, head-on war would be avoided.
Maybe Putin will do something like I described above, but only after IMF transfers the money to Ukraine, so Gazprom could get paid for the gas first, and then fuck the IMF, by telling them that loan agreement was signed by illegitimate government. It would be classy, Putin-style, total humiliation of the west. In the end, he would get to keep the country and the money, leaving others with a stupid grin on their face.

That region is strageically important for Ukraine...as Donetsk and Dnepropetrovsk basically feed Ukraine...between their mines and factories. Dnepropetrovsk is pretty much owned by an Oligarh named Ihor ( Igor) Kolomoyskiy...while Donetsk is mostly under a billionaire named Rinat Ahmetov. Kolomoyskiy was quick to get a private army and not only defend his region from potential takeover...but also finance various bands of armed men to fight for the Maidan cause. It is said that Kolomoyskiy helped finance the events in Odessa...and he owns some of the news channels which continue to tell Ukrainians what to think. Ahmetov was a bit more timid it seemed. He took a hands off approach.

The last statistics I saw was 50-60% of Ukraine's coal comes from Donbass...where the fighting is taking place. So you can see how no one would want to easily give that up. It would be equivalent to TX and LA saying they are no longer a part of the US and taking the oil industry with them. The other side of that token is Russia's influence. They don't want a Nato puppet that close on their border and having a buffer zone is very much in their interests.

Iit's not tough to understand why those people in Donbass don't want to be assocaited with the new Kiev ideology. The further east you go from Kiev, the more people speak Russian, listen to Russian music and identify with Russia in their core beliefs and values. They have different national heroes, different perceptions of historical events and they don't like the new anti russian nationalism sweeping through to the west of them. That doesn't always mean they love commies and everything associated with the Russia the west shows in movies. It's just they're more Russian than Ukrainian and these days...that's a difference you can really feel.

I see this being a pretty intense battle because both sides have an interest in the land and they are defending their idealogies.

Importance of airport more than symbolic. Strategically vital for any offensive against East bacause Rebels can easily be supplied arms and munitions from just across the Russian border. Therefore Porky needs a staging area to bring in cargo planes with arms, munitions and recently conscripted ill trained soldiers in mass.  Additionally, in modern warefare, where armour is used, which requires logistical support, air cover is essential because whomever controls the air controls the battlefield. Again, the Rebels can have easy access to nearby airports in Russia, wheras Porky needs an airport close to the battlfield. Without the airport in Donetsk, Porky has no chance to occupy and hold Eastern Ukraine which explains all his thwarted attempts.  Lastly IMF has made it clear any more loans are predicated on Porky unifiying Ukraine which is not about to happen whithout the Donetsk airport.   Checkmate

The importance of the airport is limited to its usefulness as a vantage point for artillery spotters. Since the control tower has fallen, the remains of the seven-storey new terminal building are probably the airport's most useful feature.

The runway, which now resembles a lunar landscape, has less utility as a landing strip than a grass field. I don't see any repairs being effected anytime soon.

For air cargo transport of American arms, the Kiev Junta has been using the Dnepropetrovsk International Airport. The airports at Kharkov and Mariupol could also be used if needed.

Due to a combination of years of neglected maintenance on Ukrainian aircraft and availability to Novorossian forces of Man-Portable Air Defense Systems (MANPADS), Ukrainian air support of ground forces has ceased to be relevant.

More simply, they could have shelled the thing relentlessly in order to enable them to report to their commanders that they have been "doing something."  We have heard reports of mass desertion; in this cold weather, lacking any special motivation, holing up and throwing darts might be a preferred option for reluctant fighters.  Such a scenario would not be realistic if eastern forces were mounting real, Russian-organized opposition.  The more you think about it, the more nonsensical the reports of direct Russian involvement become.

"...limited to its usefulness as a vantage point for artillery spotters."

Artillery is usually over the horizon, or else nearly so, certainly beyond visual range, unless you mean light mortars. Plus drones can operate at artillery ranges and geo-locate targets with precision, so who needs an exposed airport tower? The airport tower and buildings are relevant for snipers and some cover, that's about it.

You know what's coming, don't kid yourself.

Make no mistake, this airport looks a lot like the Denver, this was a sensitive basis, the track has more than 50 inches of concrete, amazing underground, the tower only after six months of intense bombings fell, was designed to endure attacks nuclear.

The capture of this airport has nothing to do with nationalism, is infrastructure and location (although the track is now only the leftovers).

My theory is that the Donetsk shelling is being done out of spite by Kiev and because their American bosses told them to.

Kiev knows that this mostly Russian speaking territory is lost to them for good. That they will never rejoin Ukraine is absolutely clear from the 1000s of videos and interviews with the local population.

The only remaining question is where the western boundary will be, hence the ongoing conflict at the airport. Russia will end up paying to rebuild it.

Does anyone seriously believe that new Ukrainian conscripts will fight to the death for the likes of this warmonger or the weasel Yatseniuk?
