I dont see why there is so much opposition to this stunt of his.  I've seen it proposed plenty of times here - send kids to trade school.  Thats what hes doing. It may not be deliberate but sending the less talented kids to a CC keeps them from clogging up universities, driving up the prices for all (since anyone can get a student loan), and devaluing/watering down the education for everyone else.

Id rather pay 2k to get a kid with a meaningful skillset than eat the $50k+ loan when he gets a Liberal Arts degree and has to live off the govt. Sure, in a vacuum its a bad idea, but we already have a welfare state - I see this as a lower cost option.

You do realize you can take Liberal Arts at the CC level don't you?

Anyone who would go to CC to gain a skillset is already there.  They have functioned quite well, at least the one's I have seen.

This is about debt.  Moar debt.

Ain't nothing more expensive than something that is free.

And think what kind of bonds that CC is gonna have to float to be able to handle another gabillion kids who can barely keep from pissing their pants in class.  Adultish babysitting is what this is.

I'm sorry, exactly where did you see me say that?

BTW, get a clue.  They don't print $$ for themselves.  They make their skim by creating currency and loaning it to everyone.  Much easier to avoid being hung.  They call it banking.  ;)

And as for education, we have been funding that shit for decades.  Called a library.

Never thought that tuition for a CC was a huge barrier for entry for anyone.  And there are already myriads of ways to get money for tuition.

Maybe next we can have some smart people decide a fair price for toilet paper?

College used to be affordable.  That is until the government decided that it should be affordable.

I shudder to think how much it will cost when it is free.

Making it "free" will lower its quality for everybody.  The FSA will value it for what they pay, namely nothing.  The CC profs' salaries will depend on them passing the bumbs.  Can't have too many Ds, Fs, and Ws, can we, or there must be something wrong with the TEACHER. Ever been in a class where people don't show and nothing much is expected?  It brings down the best.

A) "College used to be affordable.  That is until the government decided that it should be affordable."

B) "I shudder to think how much it will cost when it is free. "

That's two separate issues. The first is what happens if you have a massive subsidy on a product or service on a market

in the second case, when the subsidy becomes a single-payer system, you have what is more common in Europe, which is... less expensive

as often, it's a problem of "moar", in this case "more subsidy/credit is better then a little bit of subsidy/credit"

well, it is... until it isn't anymore. like muffins, one or two make your life better, moar and moar... increasingly less

You have missed the point completely.

Anybody who belongs in college finds a way to be there. The latest plan lowers the bar to higher education such that fogging a mirror is good enough. The cost for this is borne on the first group, in the form of (non-repayable) debt; it isn't funded at all.

This is really another bennie for the FSA.

I can see both sides of this. Yes, I agree, we all know the money is not there and anything the gov touches turns to shit, but...

My grandparents born in the late 1800's only received an 8th grade education and in those times that was adequate for the jobs available and life in general. As technology progressed society deemed 12 years of education to be the minimum standard and that is the world most of us grew up in. Today we know that just a HS education is not going to offer you many options and even a BS is the equivalent of what a HS diploma was a few generations ago... So , my point is that as the world changes the minimum amount of education required to get by rises. Is this the best way to do it? Probably not, but something needs to be done or our already stupid youth will be even more outpaced by other nations. Times change.

Times do change, but the educational system doesn't seem to keep up. They keep dumbing shit down. How about teaching the skills needed to make a living in the first 12 grades? Why must it continue to be more and longer instead of teaching shit that matters earlier?

Have you seen the shitty education that kids get these days? It really is worse. It isn't that the needs have gotten higher but that the system produces total shit. Hence, If you want a kid that can count change and read the directions, you need a CC degree.

Pods,

As much as I enjoy reading your comments, and thought process daily. This is one time I must step out and disagree with your assessment. Though we easily tie debt to the bricks and chains that bind us. This is not what it seems. This is about consent. What are we the people willing to surrender or comply too?

Our acquiescence is our bind. It is our inability to stand and then press forward to reverse the obscene. It is not the debt. But the inability to stand against those whom wish to imprison us. Simply by the lack of our motivation.

Debt is irrelevant when you have the upper hand on power. Debt is not the chain. Lack of motivation to lift the chains from our necks is the issue. We suffer from a mental paralysis that makes us think we are cripples. We assume we are mental and physical midgets. It's nothing we've done. It happens to be this thing called "Predictive Programming". The very thing taking place since you were entered into kindergarten.

We are told and taught what debt and leadership is supposed to be. They also dictate to us what it means to be free. We have never been told how simple it is.

The truth is we stop complying. We wake up and realize their (Controllers, Central banks, Government officials) soup of the day (Issues. Financial, political, race related, religion, living standards or sex preference) have no bearing on our individual lives.

As long as we continue to feed into their matrix, we continue to surrender that which belongs to us. And that is our lives. Stop paying tribute to their issues. Stop giving it meaning by thinking and pondering about it.

LET'S START CREATING OUR OWN DIALOGUE. AND THEN PROCEED TO LIVE BY IT.

P.S. I only contribute when I have been drinking. It is the only time my passion ignores my boundaries. Readers take note. Drinking is only bad if someone else told you it was.

Are you arguing its more economical to eat a default on a $50k govt backed loan for a useless Lib Arts degree than a $2k bill for the same degree?

I dont know how old you are but Im seeing the recession crushing the morale of kids I went to highschool with. Smart people that could easily run with many of the older folks Ive worked with in professional environments. Theyre also smart enough to see that many of their peers went to school for 4 years, got good grades and a sensible degree before coming out just as unemployed as them. It doesnt make sense to take the risk and waste the time. I believe it could have the potential to pull some of these folks off unemployment, and it doesnt take long for someone to rack up $2k of bills on the govt payroll anyway.

Dont get me wrong, in a vacuum I am vehemently opposed to this kind of welfare. But we dont live in a vacuum.  We live in a world where interest rates are manipulated, the BLS lies to us about unemployment, gov regulation overrides appropriate underwriting for loans, and we offer incentives for people not to work. I see this as a relief to the taxpayer.

I used CC to lower my cost of education (I paid for it all myself, no loans). It was great for that.

I can be cynical and say that the avg FSA person couldn't make it thru high school, let alone be able to cut it with the lowest gradient college course, i.e. Accounting, English, etc. The lowest level math class I can recall was Algebra II/Trig.

Do we have any details on this? I mean, do you get n number of units for free or what? Is it like the stupid loans where "school related" expenses, computer, rent, whatever is covered? Is it a blank check for X amount? My biggest concern is that the CC's don't have the staff or facilities for some 20% influx of new people on campus. What if you're really not making it? How do you keep some slug from using up space while failing every semester? Can't we just have Night School for the dullards?

That's what this administration has been all about, transfer of wealth from the middle class

to the poor and to the uber-rich. At this rate the middle class will be extinct in 10 years.

By then you can bet the rich won't be picking up the baton and taking care of the poor.

There will be a lot more poor because the former middle class will join their ranks.

They aren't.  They are being manipulated by the Soro's of the current regime to believe they are being deprived of the knowledge they should rightfully be "taught" about the fraudulent activities of the Central Banker's ability to create wealth, (i.e digital cyphers and physical silken "notes" created out of thin air in exchange for future indebtedness to these selfsame entities as a result of previously paid cyphers added to the accounts of miscellaneously attributed individuals and / or their surrogates.)

Those are already bottomless pit Socialist programs that aren't going away so fast

Educated people are a lot less of a drag on society and more productive than dropouts

Won't save everyone, but definitely pays better dividends in the long and short term than bankster bailouts

My assumption if we're going to print a few trillion for bankers and a few trillion for welfare and a few trillion for prisons- ALL BOTTOMLESS PITS, why not INVEST a few hundred billion in something that might actually produce long term dividends

Will there be waste? Absolutely

But even a 1% return beats the other black holes

City College was one of the great college systems in the US - thousands of people got good college educations and went on to make real contributions in business and academia.

Problems started with 'Open Admissions' - no minimum academic requirements meant anyone could go and that meant standards dropped like a rock in a vacuum.

Free - or minimal cost - education is a GOOD thing  IF standards are maintained.  A good part of the world has minimal cost college for citizens BUT you have to qualify.  Change your mind halfway through and you're going to pay for the change.  Right now we have a system that panders to those that can afford to pay - with those paying full freight subsidizing those on 'scholarship'.  Bit at least there is a semblance of 'standards' - you don't get into a top school if you're a comolete dunce (well unless your parents are buying buildings).

The problem in this country is about JOBS.  We've exported the jobs that once employed those with a basic education - factory and trades jobs are hard to find.  Those that remain are now far more demanding - a mechanic needs to know more now than most college grads.

Providing EVERYONE with a crappy 'higher' education does nothing to solve the fundamental problem.  TPTB are determined to pay as little as possible for labor - whatever that labor accomplishes.  So we have sent factory and service jobs (call centers, tech support etc) overseas to cheaper labor markets while bringing in cheap labor (H1B for tech and high end, illegsal for low end) when the jobs can't be sent elsewhere.  Our politicians fully support this destruction of jobs 'Free Trade' - BOTH paerties are complicit in this fundamental destruction of the US economy.

The reality is that if you are not creating or adding 'value' you are NOT creating wealth.- mining ores, smelting ore into steel or aluminum, forming metal into goods or machines... cutting down trees, making furniture... growing grain, milling flour, making bread... shearing sheep, spinning thread, weaving cloth, making clothes...  THESE CREATE REAL WEALTH

All else - finance, accounting, law, government... these are OVERHEAD - COSTS THAT CONSUME WEALTH - they are parasitic in that they consume the real wealth created through production and labor.

So it doesn'rt matter how well educated people are, or how cheap things are if nobody is actually creating or adding VALUE.

My grandmother got Gummint Cheese in the 70's. Even that was a colossal waste... they gave her a five pound block every week. She gave that shit away to her kids, grandkids, neighbors, anyone who was willing to carry it out of her 5 room rent-controlled railroad flat. For 3 months it was American cheese. Somebody complained, and instead of making some basic changes to the variety of foodstuffs they just changed the cheese to Provolone. Sanity. Yeah.

Way to talk out of both sides of your mouth, Zerohedge.

Cut spending for public education, because you dont believe in a free ride for students?

Is the person who authored this familiar with the history of privatization in South America, Asia and Russia? It is a disaster for 'the people'.

Hard-line antisocialism plays into corporate interests and is fully in line with Chicago economics which has bankrupted whole tracts of the world at this point. The places on earth with highest quality of life (Denmark for example) are also places were social services lessen the gap between the rich and the poor. Redistribution of wealth via public services is an important equalizing force and its removal is disasterous. (see the history of privatization in Chile, Argentina, the ex-Soviet republics, America and Britain!).

This line of thinking is basically in line with austerity policy, neoliberalism as per Friedman, and is what corporations and big dogs everywhere have always wanted! Break labor! Destroy unions! Fire government workers! Slash educations, parks, roadway spending, government projects and infrastructure!

Even if you gain back 2 billion per year from this 'fiscal discipline' of cutting the service, its absolutely nothing compared to what money already holds out in foreign tax havens, which our tax policy will continue opting never to address; furthermore, quality of life is measurably degraded in each place where austerity measures have been implemented -- and there is no reward for balanced budgets in a fiat currency world anyway!

The knee-jerk antisocialism of American free thinkers is to me, one sure mark that we are destined to fail. We distrust the fundamental mechanism of helping the public good, which is done through government. We are anti-government to the point that only anarchistic modes of social organization are palatable to us. And that has never nor can ever work so you become preppers - a lone man with his gun, waiting for the apocalypse. Disgusting, and an epitome of self-serving cynicism. Its the low-income analog of the rich corporate executive, who is also cynically 'stacking' money and also cynically waiting for the apocalypse, hoping that a big enough account will get him and his family to safety, rest of the world be damned.

We get out of this altogether, or not at all. The efficient market hypothesis deified into antisocial 'cut-cut-cut' free marketism and privatization, is MORE intellectually bankrupt than Keynesianism! QE has MORE of a chance than austerity, even though it has no chance! And Milton Friedman / Hayek / Mises supporters can spit derision at Keynesianism, but please point to a historical example of their own policy enactments which has not proved to be a catastrophic disaster. Its not as if we haven't had enough of them.

US fed/state/local govts have spent $110 TRILLION since 1983 promising to do things 'for the greater good' (whatever the fuck that means). What it's gotten us is a police state that behaves like a scheming, psychopathic, paranoid helicopter parent that really wants to pimp us out to the local paedophiles.

Whom will benefit from this program?  Banks, of course, who will extend student loans to the govt and the student.  It'll just create more debt.

All aspects of education would improve if govt got completely out of the game and let free market forces work.

And yeah, proably a good idea to get rid of slave style student loan debt (for children!) and bring bankruptcy back for student loans, loan originators are obviously the more sophisticated/educated bargainer.  Do not subsidize or backstop student loans with the government.  Let the market work.  If banks loose too much money making bad loans, that's what bankrutcy's for...was...

This program will increase govt debt, but also student debt.

It will have strings attached--like maintaining a GPA and completing a degree within a period of time.  The number of students at high risk of not completing a degree--the exceptionally stupid and lazy--will be encouraged to try because it's free.  They'll not do well enough to meet the reimbursement standards, so they'll be indebted.

It's no different than low-interest, low down payment mortgages.  Govt will fix the program by throwing money at it and reducing student obligation, increasing mal-investment.

It only gets worse from here.

I remember, when I started grad school, I walked by a playground that was on campus.  There, I sat down to read a book under a tree.  A little girl 12 years of age came and sat down next to me.  So we talked a bit.

She told me that she had been born on the university campus, went to the university lab school, and had never lived anywhere else.  I asked what her father or mother taught at the university.

"My dad is a student," she said.

He was one of those perpetual, overly-funded grad students in anthropology.  Student loans and grants.  That sort of thing.

That cartoon is not accurate. There are only western nation-states in the NWO at this time. Western Central Banks have a combined financial system. Taxes in Germany, Australia, Japan as well as the US all pay for my FAFSA income. They print the money and in that way it comes from everyone. The money will never be paid back. We are in a World War at this time. It is financial as well as physical but mostly noticable as a financial war. The attempt by Washington D.C. to create free community college may be considered one of the financial warfare fronts that the NWO is fighting on. Like Germany in WWII continueing to advance as it was being defeated is similar to the condition the NWO is in at this time.

Get everything you can from the NWO before they implode bitchez.
