Propaganda & Fear-Mongering Works

When I see the results of polls like the one below, I realize there is no chance the majority will do anything to reverse the course of our nation in terminal decline. It will take a complete collapse and bloody reset before we have a chance at putting this country back on a sustainable rational course.

How the fuck can Americans actually think terrorism should be Obama and Congress’ top priority? Are Americans really that stupid? WTF do they want Obama and Congress to do? Double the DHS budget? Increase electronic surveillance on our communications? Give local police more military hardware? Ban guns? Repeal the 4th Amendment?

Do the ignorant masses know their actual chances of being killed by a terrorist? To say the chances are astronomically miniscule is an understatement. See for yourself:

  • You are 35,079 times more likely to die from heart disease than from a terrorist attack
  • You are 33,842 times more likely to die from cancer than from a terrorist attack
  • You are 23,528 times more likely to die from obesity than from a terrorist attack
  • You are 5,882 times more likely to die from medical error than terrorism.
  • You are  4,706 times more likely to drink yourself to death than die from terrorism.
  • You are 1,904 times more likely to die from a car accident than from a terrorist attack.
  • You are 2,059 times more likely to kill yourself than die at the hand of a terrorist.
  • You are 452 times more likely to die from risky sexual behavior than terrorism.
  • You are 353 times more likely to fall to your death doing something idiotic than die in a terrorist attack.
  • You are 271 times more likely to die from a workplace accident than terrorism.
  • You are more than 9 times more likely to be killed by a law enforcement officer than by a terrorist.
  • You are 110 times more likely to die from contaminated food than terrorism.

What policies do Americans want Obama and Congress to prioritize in 2015? According to the Pew Research Center’s policy priorities survey, 76 percent of people in the United States believe tackling terrorism should be the nation’s top priority this year. It is the first time in four years terrorism has made the top of Pew’s list and its appearance for 2015 can be attributed to economic improvement as well as persistant terrorist threats.

Infographic: Americans' Top 10 Policy Priorities For 2015 | Statista

Despite considerable improvement, the economy is still an area of concern for Americans and 75 percent of them want President Obama to give it attention. Job creation is closely linked to economic improvement so it comes as little surprise that it rounds off the top three with 67 percent of respondents expecting it to be prioritized.

*  *  *

The fact Americans think terrorism is our top priority proves that Edward Bernays was an evil genius. The combination of mass media and propaganda can convince the willfully ignorant and dumbed down populace of anything. Facts are unnecessary when fear and feelings are far more powerful. We are truly doomed.

I think George Carlin also covered this subject extensively.

Fun Facts's picture

yes, he did, and he was brilliant and ahead of his time.

That said, he didn't cover the fact that there are very smart people who have worked tirelessly for decades to perfect how to mindfuck the simpleton general public at large.

The methods are very effective because they tap basic unchanging aspects of human nature.

The average goof has no hope of undoing all the advanced TV propaganda from birth.

It's part of their being now, their world view. It has been internalized to id and ego as it was designed to do.

Don't worry though, everything is awesome when you're a part of the team.

ZerOhead's picture

So 76% say they are most concerned about the terrorists.

Personally I'm 100% percent most concerned about the terrorists. Mostly the current brainless batch who are running this giant turd sucking shitshow...

Fear of threats and intimidation has worked for a couple million years for the alphas.

Why would you expect anything new?

Homo sapiens is only about 200.000 years old – and no, it has not been a ’survival of the fittest’ as understood by people ’educated’ in US. ‘Fittest’ has been misinterpreted as ‘strongest’ (giving fuel to the infantile understanding of human nature as predominant in US). In fact the ‘fitttest’ was the best adapted. And the tribes that was best at collaborating outcompeted the tribes dominated by one or two ‘Neanderthal’-minded ‘alphas’.

Language itself developed as a tool to collaborate and not as a tool to dominate. Later TPTB have made a constant effort to miniscule the potential of the human race – we’re stupid, self-centered, egoistic and weak creatures in need of ‘strong alphas’ to guide us. BS.

Very well said!

Were all the dystopian classics meant as warnings, or were they instruction manuals (soon to be historical text books?)

We were warned. We didn't listen.

Read a great novel this weekend that goes to this point: State of Fear by Michael Crichton. Great bibliography as well.

Zerohedge is like the MSM and wants to trick you that they are any different from one corrupt politician or one corporate pandering party to the next.

I think this pile of dog shit should have been added to their list of obfuscation.

TalkToLind's picture

Nope, if ZH were mainstream it wouldn't allow bitchez like us in the comments section.   If you look closely, you might notice that all of the centrally managed MSM "news" sites have abandoned user comments altogether from their "news" stories, or if not then the comments are always scrutinized and moderated to ensure that only "correct" opinions make it through.  Hell, here on ZH we can actually say Fuck The Fed and the worst that happens is multiple down votes...

How can I convince people to be good metaphysicians around here?

"Fuck the FED, and the bus they rolled in on."

there, fixed it.

Don't cast stones in a glass house. Zerohedge spreads a whole lot of Propaganda & Fear-Mongering itself.

Or do you actually believe that we are in a 7 year long economic "recovery", in which several COUNTRIES are currently defaulting and rioting?

Lately the TEEVEE has been hounding me non-stop to get a flu shot (I haven't taken one in 6 years).  Several times a day the "news" reporters are there swearing that this this flu season is the absolute worst of all...and I is scared.

A Lunatic's picture

They can see you and know if you got the shot or not, better get it done.....

TalkToLind's picture

That's right.  Heck, I've noticed how the prestitutes always say the worst number of flu cases is in the state named xxxxxx; and xxxxxx is always the state I live in!  Those deceptive bastards.

the cure for this hounding [a sledgehammer] used to be a lot more fun back in the CRT days.

Take it out back and shoot it. Repeatedly. With a large caliber weapon.

Anthropologically speaking, you can stop worrying and just opt for the Athropological school of thinking that asserts you can take the natural immunity side of the debate and tell the Biological Behaviourists to stay on their side of the Chuch on herd immunity via a flu shot. Theoretically, the chances of actually catching something is very remote statistically.

If one falls into the young or old cohorts, or are immunologically compromised/deficient, then, you might want to consult your GP.

Otherwise, if you are feeling relatively healthy, you need not worry whatsoever.

Master_Blaster's picture

Doesn't economy and jobs go hand in hand? That's enough to explain our American Idol worshiping sheep.

knukles's picture

When's the new season start, by the way?

capital_anarchist's picture

Exactly. Too bad 75% didn't choose the US Economic Terrorism category.

There is big money and control in terrorism. Fear and greed, same as it ever was.

"Are Americans really that stupid?"

Most Americans today are little more than well-trained herd animals.

There should be a law against provoking unnecessary fear, like the law that punishes a perpetrator who yells 'fire' in a packed movie theater.

There would be a lot lest MSM and blogs to look at, wouldn't there?

mayhem_korner's picture

You mean like provoking unnecessary fear that the government is primarily concerned with intimidating its citizens?

cherry picker's picture

That is not unnecessary fear as it is happening, but there is very little interest in it by MSM or the people, that is why the government by the people for the people no longer exists

mayhem_korner's picture

That is not unnecessary fear as it is happening

...or possibly you are the victim of your own propaganda.

Anusocracy's picture

Yelling fire should not be a free speech issue.

It is a contract and property rights issue.

knukles's picture

2 of the greatest successes of propaganda.
They claim not to be "watching" while a meme that "they are watching" develops creating self-censorship, when in fact they may or may not be watching.
They play the Hegelian Dialectic so well that some folk figure that everything is part of "the" Hegelian Dialectic and in their social detachment (wherein they no longer can figure reality form fantasy) and disaffection simply become paranoid schizophrenics want to comment cynical sarcasm to all who will listen and are thus, relegated to harmless drooling nabobs of negativism.  (As in; "Gone down another rabbit hole, way the fuck too far") ie are rendered harmless blowhards.

Edit:  Oh and I forgot the third.  When everything is so propagandized that comedy shows begin making fun of the propaganda and it's mechanisms resulting in everybody thinking that they are aware they're being manipulated and thus it's OK, somthat they no longer feel they are being manipulated... ie have been lulled into a sense of complacency.

These are the triumphs of Bernays and Goebbels.

Katastrofenhausse's picture

Wish I could give more than +1 to that

Knucks, you might like this one

NidStyles's picture

It amazes me when I find people that figure that out. Here I thought I was one of those angry blowhards that went too far.

Thank you for making me feel less alone.

Fun Facts's picture

These f'ers are so smart. The thing is, once someone has been exposed to the mechanics of the techniques being used against them, it becomes less effective.

There is a correlation between the effectiveness of propaganda and IQ.

This is why if Fluoride is good for a -10 IQ reduction, that's really about all they need. Throw in some statins to take off another -5 and the masses are putty in their hands, now down to retard level for a formerly normal IQ.
