Total Announced Job Cuts In 2015 Just Topped 32,000

Tyler Durden's picture

Presented with little comment aside to note the ironic timing of the surge in job cut announcements from North American firms since President Obama's "Crisis Has Passed" State of The Union speech...

Job cuts announced by publicly traded firms in North America...

Data: Bloomberg

"unambiguously good" - aside from for these 32,102 people...

I've got news for you folks, this is just the beginning.  We are just about four quarters after QE3 stopped putting additional funds into the system.  QE3 allowed companies to delay the inevitable.

The inevitable has now arrived.

Part of my work involves group email once a quarter to clients in the tech and finance industries, I use the bounces as a rough indicator of how the economy is going.

It just so happens I sent that email about an hour ago. Not as bad as what I saw in January 2009, but it's second only to that quarter.  As I mentioned a week ago, everything looks like late 2008 2.0 to me when it's a non-doctored data set.

I'm a bit confused. For the SOTU they require you to check your brains at the door. And I'm afraid I might have forgotten to reclaim them when I left.

Does anyone see anything between here and 50% plus unemployment? As far as I can make out there aren't any new jobs coming that can't be replaced by robots and/or software. You can only take up so much slack by increasing the number of gov workers, homoland security, military or inmates etc. I've heard a couple of recent graduates talking about their future "careers" and I just feel sorry for them.

The sick thing is this, technology should be reducing the cost of living and should enable less people to be in the labor force.  So pre industrial revolution the farmer had the whole family in the field working.  New technologies enabled that farmer to multiply his production and relieve the entire family of the burden of very hard work.  The same thing should be happening now, but it is not.  Standards of living should be going up with less effort.  Why is that not happening?

Government and their owners have blocked this natural process from happening.  One example is education where people are forced to pay in excess of $100;000 and 4 + years on education when using internet/online technologies that education should cost less than $10,000 and should take no more than 2 years.  Many other examples like that.

Yes. The only bright careers will be engineering (those that design the machines) and maintenance (those that service and repair the machines) and of course the workers that support those two groups. Everyone else goes to section 8 housing.

The sentiments of the article are irrelevant.  Americans are blind and ignorant to the fact that the US has been living through an economic depression that rivals the Great Depression.  The soup lines are hidden by EBT and all the other government transfers, and yes it provides a safety net, but it only delays the inevitable since this nation fully embraces every tenet of Marxism...just don't call it Liberalism.

Take 10 full time 40 hrs/week employees(10x40=400 hours of work) , and cut their work week to 30 hrs/week  (10x30=300 hours of work).

To make up the 100 hours of work needed to do the original job, you now hire 5 new 20 hr/week employees do the needed work (5x20=100 hours of work).

You now have "created" 5 new jobs
and now have 5 fewer "unemployed" workers.

Major problem of "job creation" and "unemployment" are solved.
