Blowout Victory For Syriza In Greek Elections: Live Webcasts

Tyler Durden's picture

UPDATE 3: With over 96% of precincts reporting, it looks like Syriza will end up with 149 seat in Parliament, just 2 shy of an absolute majority, although already several of the parties that are entering parliament have vocied their intention to allign with Syriza, so it will hardly be a significant hindrance to Tsipras to conduct whatever anti-Troika policy he wishes.

UPDATE 2:

UPDATE: Greek Government official admits electoral defeat by Syriza

As AP reports,

A senior official in Greece's governing conservatives has conceded defeat to the radical left Syriza party in Sunday's national elections.

"We lost," Health Minister Makis Voridis told private Mega TV. "The extent of that result is not yet clear."

Voridis, the conservative party's parliamentary spokesman, says the government's austerity policies, implemented to secure vital international bailouts, "make sense" but were cut short before they could bear fruit.

An exit poll on state Nerit TV projects Syriza winning by a wide margin.

*  *  *

The first Greek exit polls are out and here they are:

According to the initial exit polls, in first place, with some 35.5%-39.5% of the vote is Syriza, a huge lead over the second placing New Democracy which has 23-27% of the vote - far more than polls had indicated previously - and a spot which essentially  assures Tsipras' party an absolute majority in parliament and the ability to take as hardline an approach as he wishes.

The other parties:

  • Golden Dawn nationalists: 6.4-8.0%
  • The new party, To Potami, also with : 6.4-8.0%
  • Venizelos' socialist Pasok: 4.2%-5.2%
  • KKE: 4.7%-5.7%
  • Independent Greeks: 3.5%-4.5%
  • Knima: 2.2%-3.2%: probably not enough to pass the 3.0% threshold

How the parliament breakdown would look like with these numbers: SYRIZA has a 12.5 percentage point lead over New Democracy and is expected to get between 146 and 158 seats in Parliament, according to the exit polls.

  • SYRIZA 152 (146-158)
  • ND 70 ( 65- 75)
  • Golden Dawn 19.5 ( 17- 22)
  • POTAMI 19.5 ( 17- 22)
  • KKE 14.5 ( 13- 16)
  • PASOK 13.5 ( 12- 15)
  • ANEL 11.5 ( 10- 13)
  • KINIMA ( 0- 8)

A second take on what Greek parliament would look like also gives Syriza an almost certain majority:

A quick observation:

In short: if nothing changes drastically from here, a blowout victory for Syriza is essentially assured, one which gives it an absolute majority.

This must be the beginning of the end for the EU elite.  Most EU citizens now recognise that austerity for them is the cost of keeping the elite in the luxury to which they have become accustomed.

Why should the 99% continue suffering lower standards of living, whilst the 1% pockets half of the global wealth? Such inequality will no longer be tolerated.  The US must ensure they follow suit in the next election.

Down with the Czar! Down with the rich and the privileged! Congrats, Greece.

I wonder how long this process of renegotiation will take. Is it too optimistic to expect results by 2016? I'm not sure if that's enough time for the Greek flavor of commies to line their pockets.

@ DeliciousSteak: To which tier of "rich and privileged" do you refer?  You really think this outcome was not anticipated at a higher level?  Consider the fortune Soros just made, for example.

Greece will go through hell unless / until odious debt is repudiated and policy swings dramatically in favour of a real economy. That's it.  In the meantime, this is just more song and dance and posturing and false hope exploited by a different arm of the political class.

Despite the slant that states the opposite, the majority of Greeks would rather have their own currency. The polls in Greece are funded by those what want to see the outcome they seek, hence no media outlet in Greece ever mentions this Gallup International poll: http://www.orb-international.com/perch/resources/europeanattitudesresult...

Well, given that the Soviet Union has ceased to exist, given that the Putin regime has officially made new Russia into a feudal oligarchy state where every vestige of social protection has been erased, we now have Greece pretending to replace that dream in Orthodox Europe.

All the while making it clear that Syriza's Greece will be left wing like the Catalonians in the Spanish Civil war, and thus no friends of the church.

So this is now the beginnings of populist European movement as the pendulum swings back to socialism in the Mediterranean region.

Who is next?

And what will northern Europe that rules in Brussels say to this challenge?

Once again, the key to Europe's continental future lies with France, lynch pin between latin south and teutonic north.

Whose current alignment with Mutti is BASED ON SAVING THE BANKS and its instrument the Euro, no longer perceived --nor utilized by the bankster cabal-- as the instrument of the people.

And... supporting the US machine guarding the Oil patch to which Europe is totally subservient.

Thus the basic choice is between people's rule; aka democracy; and Oligarchy hold on the economy, without alienating the energy chain controlled by big oil.

Awesome times. As Pax Americana calls the shots in Brussels.

Will, or more appropriately, CAN Northern Europe evolve to something which is less reliant on US hegemony and more reliant on European solidarity?

As Churchill once famously said : Between Europe and the great open; aka the Nation on the other side of the pond; the UK will always choose the great open.

Mutti cannot make that choice as she is anchored into the heart of Europe; just like France.

I don't see an easy outlet to all these contradictions.

Our new Renaissance will know a lot of pain just like the old one.

The EU and ECB will be issuing huge threats and bribes - now to a smaller group of Greek leaders than to the whole voting country. They will also be watching and influencing Spain, Italy and other weak countries in order to avoid contagion. They have to make these bubble countries see how 'horrible' it is to leave the Euro.

A cool comment:

A GuardianWitness user in Greece has spoken of their elation and concerns after voting for Syriza.

Elections in Greece

I voted for SYRIZA, the left-wing party that seems to be winning the elections in Greece. I am elated and worried at the same time. I am elated because the progressive political domain I traditionally belong in seems to be achieving a historical victory. On the other hand, I am worried because, despite Alexis Tsipras' declared intentions to fight against austerity, the conservative political forces in Europe seem irremovably positioned against that prospect.

What I can say with certainty, if you allow me to interpret the outcome of the elections in Greece, is that the Greek people definitely voted against the effort the memorandum-friendly elements -both domestic (current governing party and current P.M., Mr. Samaras) and foreign- made to intimidate them and 'manipulate' their voting by exercising terror on them, focusing on words like 'bankrupcy', 'destruction', 'horror' etc. If nothing else, the Greek people proved that they won't be intimitated and for that I am proud -no matter what happens henceforth.

Throughout western Europe the growing opposition to the EU bankers and bailout is labeled “far right.” So why is the same opposition in Greece called radical far left? Syriza happens to be saying what the people are saying and expressing what they want; Alexis Tsipras is not going to back down when he’s in office.

Expect big increases in social spending and tax cuts (for those who actually pay taxes).

Arisotle said: ""Democracy is when the indigent, and not the men of property, are the rulers."

Greece, by definition is indigent.  How ironic that a social/communist party now has a form of Democracy.

This is a no-win game for Europe.  Greece however can leave Euroland and may, as Iceland did, do quite well.

Many great nations, whether it be Egypt, Greece, Rome, France, UK, and so on, ultimately fail. It's a natural evolution of creation, leveling fof then self-destruction. We see it now in the USA; there are no foreign invaders ruining Merika---it's many of our own politicans and leaders who are doing it. I hope we can turn direction and become a solid nation and peeples once again. That's why people voted for Barry; they were fed up with Bush but what they got was Bush II on speed.

German taxpayers are suffering in the same way for banksters and other criminals. But they didn't spend an inappropriate life-style beyond all measures over the years. Remembering to Greeks so called "social wealth" means experiencing pure anarchy build on credits - what means other peoples money. That living standard was not only facilitated by incomparable egoism and corruption of it's voted political class but also it's irresponsible voters itself. The truth is: Almost all Greek people benefited of this exorbitant paranoid system. At the same time we see a broad tradition of avoiding taxes, non-functioning and non-controllably authorities. The only thing which is working well is a perfect system of fakelaki and self-deceit.

Germans were so silly to help the Greekers like no other people in the world to refinance their exorbitant credit-parties and ignorantly living standard based on feta cheese, olives, embezzled European subsidies and wrong statistics.

Continuing their bad game and refusing to pay back own doubts Greeks also cut each form of solidarity with that normal, hard-working, other peoples debts paying German people. It's to easy to transfer it's own guilt of extravagance to other people - to tell fairy stories of rich German taxpayers and provoke anger waving flags showing Angela Merkel as Nazi.

One is for sure: There will never be a second Federal state of Germany for Greece - but 100% reliance that debts problems return very soon in that 100%-fakelaki-country.

Syriza says it wants to keep the euro. The party doesn't really care keeping euro or not. Their real motive is to use euro as a leverage to those bunch of criminals in Brussel.

Do the haircut and they keep the euro (for now). Otherwise, they will, "F**k the EU".

If haircut is happening, banks will suffer mega losses in so called "valueable asset" which is just junk bonds. ECB will need to print even more euro to buy back those junk assets. As a result, euro goes further down. That piles even more pressure to Danish krone peg. Eventually, the Denmark central bank will have to do a Swiss.

Portugal, Italy, and Spain would be very stupid beyond believe if they don't follow the Greek move. It's human nature.

So basically they want an end to austerity and not an end to EU membership. Basically a bunch of socialists that want to suck German tit.  It would be good news if there was a majority of people that voted somebody in on the basis of leaving the EU. Socialism sucks. I passed through Nicaragua the other day, a total shithole. Everybody that could leave has left.

Now, Greece, follow through.

-----

#1:  100% DEFAULT.  The debt is 100% fiat, afterall.

#2:  Make "grams of physical gold" official currency.

#3:  Cut government/handouts 99.9%, +/- 0.1%.

#4:  Declare independence... every individual.

#5:  Set taxes at 0%.

#6:  Get to work and live the good life.

So, as we all expect, a better than even chance now that Greece will unilaterally re-write the terms of sovereign debt into drachma and leave the Euro.  Having done so, the drachma drops by 90% from the re-write terms and the Greek debt is restructured.  That will take some time.  They'd like an element of surprise, but that's hard to get now.  They have to form a government, but they really can't expect to be able to issue new debt until they're on the drachma - so the heat is on.  Really on.  It's hard to see how the ECB can play sugar daddy while they prepare.

Here's what I'm wondering.  If I'm Italy - do I want Greece to dump the EUR while all my sovereign debt is in it?  There's an incentive to be the first mover. I'd like to prepare quickly and quietly within the current government - roll it out on a Sunday and have a new currency before a government is even formed in Greece, then have my EUR debt restated in the new lira while it stands above dollar parity.  It would be bold, difficult to be sure - but less traumatic than what Greece is going to experience.

Merkel, the head puppet in Brussels, Oh, I meant Berlin, must now call Obama and ask permission to deal with the Greek threat to freedom, democracy and Zionist Bankers across the globe.

No matter if the new Greek government is socialist, or crony capitalist, neither side is able or willing to confront real economic and social issues. All they are capable of doing is going to Brussels and to the ECB and asking Zionist Bankers what to do. Whatever the new government tires, it has no power, power resides in Brussels and Berlin, but also ultimately in Washington DC, home base of Zionism and it's Bankers.

Greek people have no hope, no change. Brussels will skin those fuckers alive, it is only how and when they will get around to finishing that job.

The EU is waging all out war to add Ukraine to the EU, at a time when it is falling apart in the south, and the next giant shoe to drop is Spain, then Italy.  thank you. After all, when 1% have half the wealth, live is pretty fucking good! With nothing left to do, Europe will increasing seek a wider war in the East, spreading it all across the borders with Russia. Nothing left but to wage war.

Here is what Russia has waiting to defend itself.

" if the Russian army appears in front of UAF, it will be easy to determine.

The first sign - failure of all means of communication, full discharging of batteries in vehicles, tanks and other equipment, at the same time, discharge of batteries in mobile phones, the targets, and radio stations. Then, there is a rapture of electric circuits throughout all the equipment - all of it. This is EMP. All engines stall, no way to restart. This is how the system "X" works (in order to protect the author we do not specify the name), with a range of up to 20 km.

Second - complete failure of all systems using LCD monitors, the failure of all target-locating devices of the air defense system. This is how the complex "Altair" works (this is a known complex in the world, we can name it).

Third - a failure to deploy any kinds of guided missile weapons - from MANPADS to PTURS [anti-tank guided reactive missile]. Upon launching, the ammunition liquidates itself.

This is a  battalion complex "Z" - on the basis of MTLB [multi-target light armored transporter]. Range - 15 kilometers.

Fourth - it is impossible to use a drone and low-flying aircraft. Their on board electronics will fail. This is system "Y". Then there is a complex "Avtobaza", which can forcibly land a drone.

What will happen next? Dozens (hundreds, if necessary) of the latest combat helicopters, flying over all the roads, start hunting for single armored vehicles, trains, cars. Railroad is paralyzed, bridges blown up. The  lights go out on the home front - electric stations are out of service. Civil and military headquarters on the home front and separate leaders simultaneously are liquidated by the recon-subversive groups.

This is roughly how the Russian army would conduct military operations today. Therefore, the wet dreams about the "hero-cyborgs", spitting flame on hundreds of Russian tanks, are better left to science fiction writers."

Also to add. 7,500 Ukrainian troops were encircled and trapped today by a rebel offensive NE of Donetsk. No comment from Kiev. But officially NAD announced closing this mini Stalingrad. Ukraine attacked a week ago, they have sent their men into a slaughter house, and they do not care. When do these victims of Kiev's foolish Nazi Junta turn around and head to Kiev to exact revenge for their wanton murder.

I repeat what I posted previously, as a hodge-podge of entertaining stuff for more macabre comedy "relief," under this article:  Greece - By The Numbers

The ten statistics featured in the article above are the description of the GREEK hangover, after their Bankster's Bash. Greece went through the hangover from the banksters' Bubble Party, which sort of severe hangover is coming to every other country, to whatever level they also participated in those Bubble Parties:

World Collapse Explained in 3 Minutes

Wickedly true humour.

"Called laughing why you sink."

Classic comedy bit becomes painful reality!

I expect the new government in Greece to be based on reactionary revolution, which is probably grossly insufficient to cope with the banksters, other than to drive even more psychotic breakdowns and crazy collapse into chaos. With typical Zero Hedge understatement, this article considers how: "This Won't Remain Confined In Greece"

“if Greece’s rebellion was to occur in a coherent way, [..] it would be only a matter of time before it was replicated in other parts of the continent.” But don’t think ‘they’ will let it happen peacefully. They’ll organize huge social unrest, inject violence, and then try to use it to clamp down on the population and reinforce their grip on power. This won’t remain confined to Greece.

The whole world is operating inside of fundamentally fraudulent financial accounting systems, based on being able to back up legalized lies with legalized violence, which have been getting worse, faster, at an exponential rate throughout the history of Neolithic Civilization.

MONEY IS MEASUREMENT BACKED BY MURDER, AND

DEBT CONTROLS ARE BACKED BY DEATH CONTROLS.

To challenge the international banksters brings those relatively hidden facts more to the forefront. Since the vast majority of people are not willing and able to understand that money is measurement backed by murder, the banksters do that for them, to them. I.e., "Greece was the hostage that the kidnappers executed in order to demonstrate that they were serious."

Listen you Fucking Fucks.

The US is the CENTER OF THE FUCKING WORLD and I will prove it.

All these fancy charts of GOLD going parabolic in othe countries (CAD/EUR/RUB) MEAN fucking nothing to America.  If YOU, dumbass American were to have bought 1oz of gold last year in RUB at 40K/oz you would be sitting on a 100% WIN!!! as gold is now 80K RUB.  Except you wouldn't have made a fucking dime as an American.  Do the fucking conversion.  The RUB has HALVED VS the USD which means that if you made 100% profit in Russian RUBs you can now convert your money back to USDs and have the SAME FUCKING AMOUNT!

What the fuck does this mean?  THAT YOU ARE FUCKED! That the US not fucking gold is the CENTER OF THE FUCKING UNIVERSE.

It doesn't matter what currency you look at (CAD/EUR/ETC) you would have made NOTHING!

The ONLY way to win is to SHORT gold in other currencies so that you can make money (in digits in their currency) and then convert that shit to USDs at at even BETTER rate.  You fucking win 2X SHORTING gold and you win 0 times going long gold.

Have a nice fucking day!

It might be best to see what Syriza does before getting too excited. They won the election based on promises of change. Promises from politicians loosely translate to "I'll respect you in the morning."

Now that the election is over, Syriza's actual intent will become clear soon enough.

You may remember that the US had an election in 2008 that was decided by -- promises -- of change. After the election, all that happened was that the trajectory never changed and things got worse.  We'll have to wait to see if Syriza is real or just another fraud.

I lived in Greece for several years, many years ago.  It's a very, very small county and nearly insignificant in the world of finance. BUT, any country not paying their debt or demanding a 0% rate from lenders is a HUGE deal.  Imagine if Italy or Spain did that next.  Holy moly!  That would be a tidal wave and not a ripple through the financial world.  Lehman 2 here we come!

Also, Greeks don't pay their State (Federal) Income taxes (up to 45% tax).  It's almost a seemingly voluntary system and EVERYONE cheats like hell.  They're just not organized like most countries.  The governmemnt barely survives on VAT and sales taxes.  Years of socialism, like about 40 years, has finally caused a problem.  Everyone can't work for the government.  The government can't tax itself enough to pay employees.  Add the liberal State retirement program and you have a problem.

The sad part is the USA is on the same path and at the same point.  The biggest difference is the dollar is the world's reserve currency.

So the ECB, the Euro Commission and the IMF had nothing to do with the situation the Greeks currently finds themselves in? You've heard of austerity, right?

And all those billions of bail-out euros, do you really think it went into Greek pockets? Those euros bailed out Deutsche Bank and foreign investors first and foremost.

The average Greek works more hours annually than a worker in any other OECD country - more than Belgium, more than Denmark, more than France, Germany, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, The UK etc. etc. - but hey, they're apparently lazy, don't pay their way and deserve what they get. At home this woman gets more and more problems to explain it's own voters why Greeks have all this special rights to break contracts.
To explain why this Greek voters should get another haircut about 50% of the remaining debts which means in case of Germany 50 billion Euro. With other word: Around 20.000 Euro for each four-headed family in Greece. Only in case of Germany!

The mood is: Kick them out like it was neglected in 2012.

SYRIZA is going to get 149 seats out of a 300.  A huge minority, but not a majority.  So they will have to form a coalition.

Problem is...who are they going to get to join them?

Independent Greeks are going to demand the return of the drachma, something SYZIRA doesn't want to commit to.

Golden Dawn would probably agree just to legitimize their organization, but SYZIRA would never accept their help.

The other parties all remember when SYZIRA wouldn't play ball during the last election, and will likely return the favor.

The other minority parties would all require Golden Dawn's support to form a government, which isn't happening.

Therefore, either two MPs will have to jump to SYZIRA, or we're looking at another round of elections in March.

What are the other possibilities for socialist spending in Greece?

It's Organized Crime &

Controlled Opposition.

The real world is dominated by the methods of organized crime, while all of the apparent opposition is controlled to provide the illusion that is not the case. Moreover, if one thinks more deeply about that, one will discover how and why that is necessarily the case. There is NO way to stop human beings and civilization from being entropic pumps of energy, that follow fractal patterns of organized crime. However, it is POSSIBLE that, perhaps, enough people could go through enough paradigm shifts in perception that they would understand that situation enough so that the opposition to the established organized crime systems would not be so ineffective?

The great paradox of human civilization is that it was made by warfare, in which success was based on deceits. That is how and why we have nothing but organized crime and controlled opposition. There MUST be some death controls which are central to everything else, and there ARE. However, those which actually exist operate through the maximum possible deceits, which includes that the publicly significant controlled opposition groups stay within the same basic bullshit frame of reference as the established systems.

Our entire political economy is built on ENFORCED FRAUDS. However, the vast majority of people do not understand that, since they have been conditioned to not want to understand that. Moreover, the few that do continue being reactionary revolutionaries, promoting the impossible ideals that governments should not be based on the principles and methods of organized crime, which end up being controlled by the best organized gangs of criminals. Therefore, most of the few that do understand how the established systems actually work mostly still default to promoting bogus "solutions" which continue to cause the opposite to happen in the real world.

What if we all want to know Banking Systems, but are left to pose questions on internet blogs? Does that make Banking a Secret Industry?

Maybe it is a secret club.

- What if you can't learn Banking in College
- What if you have to work in Banking to learn separate narrow segments of banking
- What if government can't brief you on Banking, Derivatives, Rehypothication, Fractional Reserve Banking, History of Banking, European Banking, Wall Street banking, etc
- What if Banking Industry says they won't explain the banking system since it is Proprietary Information

What if the Truth seems to be you have to join the industry, be watched, be vetted, give them your name & life history, before you learn the current economy system influences of banking?

What if US Voters can Not be informed Voters, can Not be responsible voters, can Not know Candidates Morals, an Not know Lobbyist Morals, can Not know the best direction for the USA, and therefore can not participate in Democracy without this "Banking Knowledge"??

Well, wouldn't that make Banking knowledge defacto "Secret", and opposed to Democracy & the US Constitution of the United States? Secrets used to fall under US Laws and were Regulated by FOIA Requests & Laws.

- And Yet propaganda seems to make FED Info Secret
- And Yet US CONgress seems not to represent Main Street
- And Yet Banking holds the US Public in Disdain, in Contempt, in Disregard, and under high interest fees for Credit

Syriza joins the Eurasian Economic Union and leaves NATO in 3...2...1...

Seriously, who can stop them? The Greeks tried leaving NATO in 1974 already.

"Syriza joins the Eurasian Economic Union and leaves NATO in 3...2...1..."

That may be the only way forward. Putin's already made soft noises to the Greeks.

WOW! that would make Washington & NATO very angry, especially given the claimed oil deposits in the Aegean.

I anticipate the EU, Washington/NATO/IMF, will do everything in their power to make life very difficult for Tsipras over the coming weeks/months. They will be aiming for him to fail.

When you fix interests at a rate of 2.4% (lower than Germany) you should not wonder that the next step is unelecting debts with a simple cross.

It's the logical consequence of a totally absurd money police - the evidence for a banana currency.

Hey Hedgies... this is the best take on the situation...

http://www.gregpalast.com/trojan-hearse-greek-elections-and-the-euro-lep...

Oh, I forgot, there's a favorable tangential reference of Krugman in the article so it must be condemned by ZHers. Of course, ZHers are probably unaware that Krugman has been a Euro sceptic for some time now.

An excerpt-

Alexis Tsipras, the leader of Syriza, would like to pretend that austerity and the euro are two different things, that you can marry the pretty girl but not invite her ugly sister to the wedding. Apparently, the Syriza chief is blissfully ignorant of the history of the euro.  The horror of austerity is not the consequence of Greek profligacy:  it was designed into the euro’s plan from the beginning.

This was explained to me by the father of the euro himself, economist Robert Mundell of Columbia University.  (I studied economics with Mundell’s buddy, Milton Friedman.)  Mundell not only invented the euro, he also fathered the misery-making policies of Thatcher and Reagan, known as “supply-side economics” – or, as George Bush Sr. called it, “voodoo economics.”  Supply-side voodoo is the long-discredited belief that if a nation demolishes the power of unions, cuts business taxes, eliminates government regulation and public ownership of utilities, economic prosperity will follow.

The euro is simply the other side of the supply-side coin.  As Mundell explained it, the euro is the way in which congresses and parliaments can be stripped of all power over monetary and fiscal policy.  Bothersome democracy is removed from the economic system.  “Without fiscal policy,” Mundell told me, “the only way nations can keep jobs is by the competitive reduction of rules on business.”

Greece, to survive in a euro economy, can only revive employment by reducing wages.  Indeed, the recent tiny reduction in unemployment is the sign that Greeks are slowly accepting a permanent future of low wages serving piña coladas to Germans on holiday cruises.

As Palast has stated in the article - Greece has been "Goldman Sacked"

If this is for real five things must happen.

1. drop euro, return to drahma.

2. default on bonds, pay 1% of nominal.

3. drop sanctions against Russia.

4. kick out banksters

5. prepare for war.

The NATO bombs will fall or their own military takes over. Return to 1974, military coupe that happened exactly for the same reason. To prevent communists from taking over.

Otherwise it is just another psych-op.

The west is stuck. It'll cost money to bail out Greece, it'll cost more money to support a military take over. It'll be a bigger mess and may cost even more if Greece turn into another Ukraine.

Marx’s class struggle plays out.

1920s - high inequality, high banker pay (bourgeoisie in the ascendancy)

1970s – low inequality, worker and union power (proletariat in the ascendancy)

2000s - high inequality, high banker pay (bourgeoisie in the ascendancy)

The mechanism for the swing away from the bourgeoisie seems to be the same again.

Wall Street Crash (1929 / 2008)
Global recession (1930s / 2010s)
