Tracking Juno: New York Prepares For One Of Top-5 Snow Storms In History; 50% Of Flights Cancelled

Tyler Durden's picture

As reported first yesterday, the North East in general, and NYC in particular, are about to be hit with a "historic" blizzard that may bring over 24 inches inches of snow in various places: a total accumulation which would make the "Blizzard of 2015" one of the top 5 worst snowstorms in the history of the city, and it the total snowfall rises over 27 inches, it would be the worst snowstorm in NYC history.

The Boston snowsfall will need an inch more to claim the same "historic" title:

So while the world awaits for Winter Storm Juno to slame the eastern searbord and demolish Q1 GDP (because after last year's harsh weather, GDP seasonal adjustments are clearly still unaware of this thing cold snow and/or cold weather in the winter), here is the latest outlook on NYC's atmospheric conditions from the National Weather Service:

CRIPPLING AND POTENTIALLY HISTORIC BLIZZARD TO IMPACT THE AREA FROM LATE TODAY INTO TUESDAY...

...BLIZZARD WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM 1 PM THIS AFTERNOON TO MIDNIGHT EST TUESDAY NIGHT...

  • LOCATIONS...NEW YORK CITY AND SURROUNDING IMMEDIATE SUBURBS... LONG ISLAND...AND MOST OF SOUTHERN CONNECTICUT.
  • HAZARD TYPES...HEAVY SNOW AND BLOWING SNOW...WITH BLIZZARD CONDITIONS.
  • ACCUMULATIONS...SNOW ACCUMULATION OF 18 TO 24 INCHES...WITH LOCALLY HIGHER AMOUNTS POSSIBLE. SNOWFALL RATES OF 2 TO 4 INCHES PER HOUR EXPECTED LATE TONIGHT INTO TUESDAY MORNING.
  • WINDS...NORTH 20 TO 30 MPH WITH GUSTS 45 TO 55 MPH....STRONGEST ACROSS EASTERN LONG ISLAND.
  • VISIBILITIES...ONE QUARTER MILE OR LESS AT TIMES.
  • TEMPERATURES...IN THE LOWER 20S.
  • TIMING...LIGHT SNOW WILL BEGIN THIS MORNING...WITH ACCUMULATIONS OF 1 TO 3 INCHES POSSIBLE BY SUNSET. SNOW WILL PICK UP IN INTENSITY MONDAY EVENING...WITH THE HEAVIEST SNOW AND STRONGEST WINDS FROM ABOUT MIDNIGHT INTO TUESDAY AFTERNOON.
  • IMPACTS...LIFE-THREATENING CONDITIONS AND EXTREMELY DANGEROUS TRAVEL DUE TO HEAVY SNOWFALL AND STRONG WINDS...WITH WHITEOUT CONDITIONS. MANY ROADS MAY BECOME IMPASSABLE. STRONG WINDS MAY DOWN POWER LINES AND TREE LIMBS.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A BLIZZARD WARNING MEANS SEVERE WINTER WEATHER CONDITIONS ARE EXPECTED OR OCCURRING. FALLING AND BLOWING SNOW WITH STRONG WINDS AND POOR VISIBILITIES WILL LEAD TO WHITEOUT CONDITIONS...MAKING TRAVEL EXTREMELY DANGEROUS. DO NOT TRAVEL. IF YOU MUST TRAVEL... HAVE A WINTER SURVIVAL KIT WITH YOU. IF YOU GET STRANDED...STAY WITH YOUR VEHICLE.

ALL UNNECESSARY TRAVEL IS DISCOURAGED BEGINNING MONDAY AFTERNOON...TO ALLOW PEOPLE ALREADY ON THE ROAD TO SAFELY REACH THEIR DESTINATIONS BEFORE THE HEAVY SNOW BEGINS...AND TO ALLOW SNOW REMOVAL EQUIPMENT TO BEGIN TO CLEAR ROADS.

The latest from the Weather Channel:

At least 28 million people are in the zone of potential blizzard conditions, and millions more will see enough snow to complicate travel.

All preparations should be made by early this afternoon for this potentially historic winter storm. Do not proceed with any travel plans in the affected areas late Monday and Tuesday or you could put yourself in great danger. Prepare for power outages both during and in the days after the storm.

Those flying in or out of the region are, well, not flying in or out.

  • FLIGHTAWARE: ALMOST 50% FLIGHTS CANCELLED TODAY IN NY-AREA

Those so inclined can watch live coverage from The Weather Chanel here:

Scientists and environmental activists have been warning about disastrous weather events such as this for decades, but the far right still refuses to listen. Climate change deniers are literally sacrificing the entire future of the planet and creating a living hell for third world countries and future generations. It's easy for rich white privileged Americans to say they don't care about the consequences of climate change, but people in developing countries aren't so fortunate, and will have to put up with increasing droughts, floods and hurricanes because of our reckless burning of fossil fuels. I wish these right wing bastards could see the damage they're doing to our beautiful planet - maybe they'd find some compassion in their hearts and finally show some support for the bills we have been trying to pass for so long.

Why aren't you calling it Global Warmng? Isn't that what you would've called it 5 years ago? Why the name change?

Also, where, besides in government-funded studies of computer simulations, has it been definitively proven that any warming (if it's still occurring) is not caused by fluctuations in the sun's output?

Also, please do explain why the simulations from 15 years ago predicted a much quicker warming trend than has actually been noted.

When all this crap is based on real world observations and not computer simulations I just might believe in it.

According to Al Gore we weren't going to have any Arctic sea ice by now.

You alarmists are actually quite amusing.

So is hell (aka NYC) really going to freeze over?

On a more personal note, I'm happy to be far away from this one. I don't remember the second one, but have old 8mm movies of my uncle wading through the snow from #2, in Bergen County, NJ. Time to go see if my old (inherited) movie projector still works.

Here in central South America, we have had a great year.  Ample rainfall has replenished spent resevoirs and basins.  The harvest will be a bounty this year.  The summer, in addition to providing much rain, has been mild and temperate, with today the first day to really reach the high 90s.  So if people driving cars into New York city is causing all of this, I say continue on driving my friends.  I happen to believe, however, the weather will be what the weather will be here in central South America, whether Al Gore flies to Davos in his private jet or not.  But if you want to worship the Carbon god or do rain dances around polar-bear totem poles in your own carbon footprints, I will not stop you.

This fuckin' top-down modeling has got to stop.  If the models tell them vampire clowns will materialize and cause havoc, these guys sound the alarm.  24 inches is nothing and I've lived in NYC for decades.  Last year was sh!tstorm after sh!storm, ice piled on snow, on ice, but their models didn't say it was happening so they told people to tough it out.  this year the models blow up and you can't even drive to the station because of all the muni vehicles doing emergency drive-to-alert-station-and-take-a-nap drills out on the road.  One word: SILLINESS

I'm always amazed at the number of people here in the northeast that run to Home Depot to buy a snowshovel before a big storm. How do that many people need shovels? How do they not already have one? (ANYTHING BUT REAL NEWS)

Americans need to forget about LA County Assessor and illegal alien out on bail for over 2 years for bribery not prosecuted yet, or the AIG crime trial of the century, or guns to the Mexican mafia, or Meth kingpin YeGon released, or arming ISIS, or the scrapping of the USS Guardian because it was "stuck".BTW catch the story about US taxpayers on hook for Hugo's "oil credit diplomacy" losses? Forget about Obama stabbing all  out allies in the back like a terrorist, Americans need SToRM Watch onthe spot reporting of........RAIN!

Below the camera at Fox news is a lil sign that says "remember folks keep it irrelevant"
