Greece Begins The Great Pivot Toward Russia

Tyler Durden's picture

Ten days ago, before the smashing success of Greece's anti-austerity party, Syriza, we noted that Russia gave Greece a modest proposal: turn your back on Europe, whom you despise so much anyway, and we will assist your farmers by lifting the food import ban.

And, sure enough, Greece's new premier Tsipras did hint with his initial actions that Greece may indeed pivot quite aggressively away from Europe and toward Russia in general and the Eurasian Economic Union in particular (as a tangent recall "Russia's "Startling" Proposal To Europe: Dump The US, Join The Eurasian Economic Union").

Some recent examples of this dramatic shift in perspective were the following:

Today we got further evidence that Tsipras will substantially realign his country's national interest away from the west and toward... the east.

First, as Reuters reported, today the new premier halted the "blue light special" liquidation of Greece to those highest bidders who have the closest access to various printing presses and stopped the privatization of Greece's biggest port on Tuesday, "signaling he aims to stick to election pledges despite warning shots from the euro zone and financial markets."

One of the first decisions announced by the new government was stopping the planned sale of a 67 percent stake in the Piraeus Port Authority, agreed under its international bailout deal for which China's Cosco Group and four other suitors had been shortlisted.

"The Cosco deal will be reviewed to the benefit of the Greek people," Thodoris Dritsas, the deputy minister in charge of the shipping portfolio, told Reuters.

Europe, for one, will be most displeased that Greece has decided to put its people first in the chain of priority over offshore bidders of Greek assets. Most displeased, especially since the liquidation sale of Greece is part of the Greek bailout agreement: an agreement which as the Troika has repeatedly stated, is not up for renegotiation.

Syriza had announced before the election it would halt the sale of state assets, a plank of the 240 billion-euro bailout agreement. Stakes in the port of Thessaloniki, the country's second biggest, along with railway operator Trainose and rolling stock operator ROSCO are also slated to be sold.

And it wasn't just this open act of defiance that marked the new government's anti-European agenda:

In a separate step, the deputy minister in charge of administrative reform, George Katrougkalos said the government would reverse some layoffs of public sector workers, rolling back another key bailout measure. "It will be one of the first pieces of legislation that I will bring in as a minister," he told Mega TV.

The Germans were not happy: A German central banker warned of dire problems should the new government call the country's aid program into question, jeopardizing funding for the banks. "That would have fatal consequences for Greece’s financial system. Greek banks would then lose their access to central bank money," Bundesbank board member Joachim Nagel told Handelsblatt newspaper.

Well, maybe.... Unless of course Greece finds a new, alternative source of funding, one that has nothing to do with the establishmentarian IMF, whose "bailouts" are merely a smokescreen to implement pro-western policies and to allow the rapid liquidation of any "bailed out" society.

An alternative such as the BRIC Bank for example. Recall that the "BRICS Announce $100 Billion Reserve To Bypass Fed, Developed World Central Banks."

And yes, the BRIC are going through their own share of pain right now as a result of plunging crude prices, but remember: crude is only low as long as the US shale sector is still vibrant. Once this marginal producer of crude with a $80 cost-breakeven is out of the picture, watch as Saudi Arabia tightens the spigots and Crude surges to $100, $150 or more. The question is whether Saudi FX reserves can outlast the Fed's ZIRP, which is the only reason - think idiots junk bond investors desperate for any ounce of yield - why the bulk of unprofitable and cash flow-bleeding US shale can still operate with WTI at $45.

Which naturally means that now Russia (and China) are set to become critical allies for Greece, which would immediately explain the logical pivot toward Moscow.

But wait, there's more.

As Bloomberg further reports, "Foreign Minister Nikos Kotzias is due in Brussels on Thursday to discuss possible additional sanctions on Russia over the conflict in Ukraine. Before the cabinet even meets for the first time tomorrow, the Greek government said that it disagreed with an EU statement in which President Donald Tusk raised the prospect of “further restrictive measures” on Russia."

The punchline:

In recent months, Kotzias wrote on Twitter that sanctions against Russia weren’t in Greece’s interests. He said in a blog that a new foreign policy for Greece should be focused on stopping the ongoing transformation of the EU “into an idiosyncratic empire, under the rule of Germany.”

And when it comes to the natural adversary of any German imperial ambitions in recent history, Europe has been able to produce only one answer...

"Greeks are Greek Orthodox. Russians are Russian Orthodox.  Very very similar churches."

orthodox

Houghton Mifflin adj.adjective

Of or relating to Orthodox Judaism.

You like BOATS? Greeks are Greek Orthodox. Russians are Russian Orthodox. Jews are Judaistic Orthodox.

  1. Adhering to the accepted or traditional and established faith, especially in religion.

  2. Adhering to the Christian faith as expressed in the early Christian ecumenical creeds.

  3. Of or relating to any of the churches or rites of the Eastern Orthodox Church.

  4. Of or relating to Orthodox Judaism.

  5. Adhering to what is commonly accepted, customary, or traditional.

an orthodox view of world affairs.

I was on the verge of downarrowing you, because of your totally propagandistic comment; but it is important that the truth regarding the definition 'orthodoxy' be known. The sheople are AWAKENING...

My point was, a shared religion between Greek and Russian people, may make it easier for them to see themselves as "closer" . I don't know much about Orthodox Judaism, so, I don't think I can comment intelligently on that.

Well, maybe the Greek church can pay the Russian loans then when the time comes. The Greek church is Greece's money pit number one. Greeks don't pay taxes, they "give" to the church. It's a protection racket. Does it work the same in Russia? Don't think so. Russia has real mafia.

>>>Greeks are Greek Orthodox. Russians are Russian Orthodox.  Very very similar churches.

Essentially, most Orthodox churches are "the same church", though there is variation in liturgy and politics.  "The Saker", for instance is of Russian Orthodox background, but belongs to a Greek Orthdox congregation; he can do that because there is no doctrinal difference between the two.

Interestingly, a member of an Orthodox church is permitted to take communion at a Roman Catholic church, though few would be caught dead doing so. FWIW a Roman Catholic is not permitted to take communion at an Orthodox church.

I am so disappointed in the war mongering West.

Look at the heat Russia is taking and they are not at war with anyone, yet.

"DC US" is my term for the US nation, and criminal occupiers of the American country.

I am not just specifying the criminals that happen to rule from D.C., but all of the criminals, far and wide, from the town halls to DC.

I feel that I need to do this because many still equate US with America. I wish to differentiate the criminals of the US nation, the DC US, wherever they rule from or reside, from the American people, and country.

I am American, not US subject.

Nah.  Russia can help by buying food for dollars.  Heck, they are unloading USTs so they could use those to buy food.  There is also pipeline to skim for dollars.  The dollar is strong now and maybe going to get stronger before the collapse.  The ECB is going to print so euros should weaken.  As longer the dollar stays strong the easier it will be for Greece to pay back debt with worthless paper dollars.  As long as they pay then Europe can't really complain too much.  In the end, Europe will always need fuel and Russia has fuel.  Europe (with plenty of help) blew up Ukraine so now another way has to be found.

If you could rewind it all and rewatch at a faster speed, it seems almost orchestrated.

that is to say; 11 3  11 5  could be 1+!+3+1+1+5= 12=3

so maybe all this goes down in March, While we are mesmorised by the market crisis, just where the pied piper wants us while the drums of war beat and they play on our fears.  there was a thread on this cover a few ago here.

So what will you make of this when 11th March and 11th May pass without a single catastrophic thing happening.

Our minds are unfortunately locked into symbolism, paganism, mysticism, ritual and superstition. We are primitive creatures with advanced weapons. Imagine if you gave a chimpanzee troop a few machine guns . . . . . . you'd get the fuck out of there. That's pretty much what the human race amounts to.

Yeh sure, the shit is hitting the fan as we speak but the fate of the world sure as shit isn't televised on the cover of a magazine. Jesus christ people, we don't need to paint our own virtual reality. That cover of the magazine is probably put together by an arts graduate for fun.

It really doesn't matter what we think of the symbolism.  What you need to understand is it matters to them (TPTB).  Anyone living through 9/11 should never doubt that evil exists in this world.  And evil is not something intangible.  No skin off my nose if both 3/11 and 5/11 pass without incident.  I don't lose sleep over any of this.  It's the middle of winter, and we're all a little bored right now, so chill out dude.

Funny but ignorant comment. I suggest you read a very weighty book written by Sidney Homer and Richard Sylla titled INTEREST RATES. Therein you will find out that Greek City states would find it difficult to borrrow money and they were therefore either required to provide real estate security or some of their wealthy citizens would have to go as guarantors.

In one instance when the city of Cyme had defaulted on her loans her citizens were not allowed to use the public colonades to get out of the sun because they had been pledged as security.

It is amazing how in Ancient times lenders had more sense about what security they took but 2500 years later the corrupt banking and political system has substituted this common sense by socializing losses.

Generally, settled societies don't emerge with a class of bondsmen, serfdom has to be "introduced", by motivated parties who possess land by virtue of organized violence (a.k.a. divine right).  The aristocratic Poles were particularly fond of serfdom, and imposed in on those parts of Ukraine they controlled, from whence it spread to other lands of the Rus.

Besides, the USA is out for Blood now that it's Junta in Kiev is being smashed on the battle field, and thousands of Ukrainian men have left for Hungary, Poland and Russia to escape the next call up to replace the thousands killed on the battle filed the last two weeks. I don't see an outraged Washington DC letting an election in Greece allow them any chance to seek alliance with Russian or Chinese interests. But that said, China with 4 trillion in FX reserves, could easily come to Greece and begin a 200 billion dollar economic investment scheme. Easily. If I had that money and a country with Greeces natural position and potential for agriculture and tourism. China could come with investment capital, not loans to pay EU bankers, the fucking EU is a sick cancer, coming only to do banks bidding and squeeze money from Greece for the banks. China could come with just the opposite offer. We have capital, let us invest!

So the Chinese and Russians just come in like butterflies and angels sprinkling "investments" around Greece with no concern for repayment? No ulterior motives?

They are just philanthropists! Voila!

You crack me up. If it's not the USA it's someone else with deep pockets wanting something. Greece never had to be at the mercy of the EU or anyone else. They made choices. Their leadership did at least. Just like our stupid leadership makes choices that harm our future. Result is the same.

Now it looks more attractive for China/Russia Investment ( economic & geopolitical ).
Greece and Turkey can swallow the bad blood ( it's getting old ) as the YOUTH need a fresh kick-start, otherwise NO ONE WINS. . . and so plenty of upside with the oil reserves in the disputed region and investment in transit lines/ transport direct to China/East.

The EU was about control by the Cabal at ANY cost. Sure we'll see others Jump Ship ( Spain, Italy , even France. . ) With 50% youth unemployment and no QUICK FIX who could turn down an OBVIOUS SOLUTION and expect to retain POWER.

You're such a wanker. 'Russia can't feed it's people'. Do you mean Russia is not self sufficient in food production OR the Government is responsible to feed its citizens?

The UK and USSA have far higher rates of child hunger/ poverty than Russia and that despite sufficiency in food production, So what's your point.

Over the coming years Russia will be far more self sufficient and less dependent on food imports whilst the UK & USSA will see increased poverty.

Have yet to see you come up with credible arguement.

While I'm certainly against these leftist scum bags known as Syriza, I do hope that the destruction of the EU is at hand.   Globalism must be resisted and those who foisted it upon us, the international jews, need to be severely punished.  Nationalism is the only legitimate political philosophy.  Nationalism is putting ones own nation and people first and is the polar opposite of globalism which is simply a group of traitors who have wandered endlessly fucking over everyone they've come across by selling out the nations who have hosted them.    With no where else to parasite off of they have now resorted to "multiculturalism" in order to subdue the one race that has proven able to resist them.   It's not just a bunch of brainwashed white college kids screaming about "racism", "social justice", "disparate impact", and "diversity".  There is much thought and a great deal of money behind these movements.

another punchline

Tsipras: EU statement on Ukraine issued without our knowledge

PM Alexis Tsipras reportedly expressed dissatisfaction with a same-day announcement on Ukraine, signed in the name all of the Union’s leaders.

A later statement issued by the nascent Tsipras government said the necessary consensus and unanimity was not attained, and that manipulation was used to issue what appeared to be statement by all 28 member-states.
Back in Brussels, the EU statement expresssed concern over the “deteriorating security and humanitarian situation” in the eastern Ukraine and the death of civilians through “indiscriminate shelling” – a reference to the carnage in the port city of Mariupol.

there is no other play. if tsipras is who he says he is ( and that's a big if) the continued problem of 'the greek problem' has not direction to go but worse. moscow will of course exploit this weakness in the armor of europe. and it will become a point of leverage against the ECB and the US.

For those of you who think God doesn't exist, and no, God isn't some bearded guy in the sky

I have to ask.

All those who claimed to speak in God's name centuries ago, even before the time of Christ,  have predicted this would be coming and how.  They had human nature pegged to a T and technology just gave the evil ones an upper hand.

Is it a coincidence?

Any country which spends money on nukes, the sole purpose for a nuke is not defense, it is to murder as many citizens on the opposing side as possible to demoralize and defeat a nation, regardless of the cost.  Folks, if that is not terrorism, I do not know what terrorism is.

Psychopaths do not think of consequences, until they are looking at the wrong end of a barrel.
