New Gold Rush? 10 Ounces Of "Historic Nuggets" Stolen From San Francisco Museum

Tyler Durden's picture

Three masked men smashed an SUV into the front-windows of The Wells Fargo Museum in San Francisco's financial district at around 230am Tuesday, making off with 10 ounces of "historic gold nuggets." As AP reports, robbers in Northern California have targeted precious metals in museum displays before and the tactics of the heist have marked other recent robberies in the area. The men escaped in a second vehicle, according to KGO, and the vehicle reportedly headed east across the Bay Bridge. Local coin dealers said the robbers may have difficulty selling the nuggets unless they melt them down. No dollar bills, Euros, or Japanese Yen notes were stolen during the robbery.

As AP reports,

Thieves in a stolen SUV smashed through the glass doors of the Wells Fargo History Museum in downtown San Francisco before dawn Tuesday and made off with up to 10 ounces of historic gold nuggets worth roughly $10,000, police said.

But rare coin dealer Don Kagin says the robbers may have difficulty selling the nuggets unless they melt them down. Word of the heist was spreading through the rare coin community, Kagin said, and dealers will be on the lookout for nuggets and coins with historical significance that suddenly appear on the market.

The three masked thieves held a security guard at gunpoint, took around 10 ounces of gold from an exhibit case and got away in a waiting sedan, police said. The guard wasn't injured.

...

With the SUV still wedged in the revolving doors Tuesday morning, people walking to work stopped to look at the aftermath of the robbery and snap pictures, while police surveyed the damage.

Shattered glass crunched underneath the tires of a tow truck pulling the green 1992 Chevrolet Suburban from the building.

The museum is in the 400 block of Montgomery Street and houses “real gold from California gold country regions,” a Wells Fargo stagecoach from the 1860s and a working telegraph, according to the museum’s website.

In addition to the stagecoach, used in the 1860s, the museum has a working telegraph and art and historical artifacts on display.

*  *  *

The men escaped in a second vehicle, according to KGO. The vehicle reportedly headed east across the Bay Bridge.

*  *  *

Not the first time...

Gold nuggets also were taken in a September 2012 robbery at the California State Mining and Mineral Museum. Five men were convicted of stealing $1.3 million in gold, quartz and other valuable metals from the museum in the western foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains.

Some of the stolen items, including a bag of ground-up quartz, were recovered. But about $12,000 worth of gold was sold to pawn shops and dealers, police said.

It was the second heist that year of valuable metals in Northern California. In February 2012, thieves made off with large chunks of gold on display in a Siskiyou County courthouse.

10 ounces???  10...ounces????  That's like gee, only $13000 FRN's of a barbarous relic, right?  So let's get this straight.  STEAL gold and it's a major fucking news story in the "lame stream media" about something "valuable" being stolen.

But if you BUY gold, then the "lame stream media" calls you crazy, stupid, a prepper, a horder, "anti-progressive" (hahahaha), etc. etc.

Keep going with it, "folks".  You're anti-government if you buy gold or silver.  You're an economic terrorist.  You're an "extremist" if you buy gold or silver.  You're a "domestic terrorist" if you stack phyzz.

But if you STEAL this shit, well fuck'n A...You may as well have robbed FORT-FUCKING-KNOX and have threatened our national fucking security!!!  You fucking piece of shit!!!

But don't you fucking dare legally trade in your worthless fucking FRN Bernanke Bucks for REAL money gold or silver phyzz....NOOOOOOOOOOO

Now you're on America's most wanted list as a traitor.

FUCK YOU, FEDERAL RESERVE SCUM!!! :-)

NAIL GUNS FOR ALL OF YOU!!!

Nail Guns...the guillotines of the 21st Century!  :-)

Central banks are buying gold on the manipulated paper market like fucking crazy by the mass tonnage and that news is squashed by the scumbag media.  That's a non-event.  Netherlands, China, Russia, India, Germany, etc. etc.

While at the same time physical gold has been stolen and sold from the U.S, England, Saudi Arabia, Lybia, Egypt, Ukrain, etc. and shipped to China and that's a NON-EVENT in the lame-stream, dinosaur, prestitute, state-run media.  And that's the ultimate THEFT OF ALL TIME!!!

This so-called "news" story is talking about 10 fucking ounces of gold!!!???????????????

WAKE THE FUCK UP, FOLKS!!!  WAKE OTHERS UP WITH THIS STORY, "FOLKS"!!!!  Use it to help others so that the slim percentage of those you know who just might finally wake the fuck up will finally start trading in those worthless FRN's for phyzz silver and gold now before it's too fucking late.

Pass it on!!!!!!

It may have been easier to sell the stolen SUV...unless they were idiots enough to use their own...then, again...they are so fucking brilliant.

Brilliant move. What a fucking brilliant move.

Really I do not give a damn about Wells Fargo's "loss". That bank is populated by more clever crooks. I do care about the loss of History as those nuggets will be melted. That is a loss to everybody.

Yet cleverness does not mitigate crime but serves to aggravate the crime.

But Wells Fargo Bank's clever and chronic theft does not serve to justify another theft.

Yeah..Party on Team Stupid as Team Clever will Party...AT YOUR EXPENSE.

California Gold Nuggets are not finer than 20K

The Gold is alloyed naturally with Silver, Copper, Iron and other impurities.

Just what in the hell do you know about Gold Refining? Not a fucking thing!!!

The process is quite lengthy and if I were to refine it then I would alloy it with Silver at Three Times the expected weight in Gold to bring it down to 6 Karat by melting that much Silver into it.

Then  I would pour that melt off into water to make small popcorn size "nuggets".

Then I would take that product and place it into 70% Nitric Acid which will combine with the Silver and become Silver Nitrate. The Copper will combine with the Nitric Acid to become Copper Nitrate Salt. What is left is Sponge Gold at the bottom of the flask, Copper Nitrate Salt in solution and Silver Nitrate Salt in Solution.

Filtering I will recover the Sponge Gold for further processing.

Then with the Copper Nitrate/Silver Nitrate Nitric Acid Solution I will add a Copper Pipe. The Copper will replace the Silver and the Silver will precipitate to the bottom of the flask. Filtering again I collect the precipitate and melt it as it is Fine Silver.

Then I will take the Copper Nitrate/Nitric Acid Solution and add a Stainless Steel Kinfe. The Copper will cement to the knife and I will be left with Nitric Acid for reuse.

As for the sponge Gold I take that and submerge that into Hydrochloric Acid. Then adding Nitric Acid slowly I will add enough to where all of the Gold is absorbed into the resultant Auric Acid Solution. Once all of the Gold has been adsorbed then I will add just enough Urea to neutralized any excess Nitric Acid.

Then I will add Sodium Metabisulfiter to that solution and watch the reaction. The Gold will precipitate out as a brown "mud"

Once again I filter. Now I will wash this product. Or I will run the product alone through the Aqua Regia process again.

But I will end up with 999 Fine Gold at the end.

Microwave? You are an ignorant child believing in magic.

Bravo sir! Very informative; however, I have one question.  Why would you alloy it with Silver at Three Times the expected weight in Gold to bring it down to 6 Karat?

It seems to me that you're just making an extended process longer.  However, given level of knowledge evident in the rest of your post, I'm certain there's a rationale.

TIA

Alloying the gold with silver down to 6 Karat is called inquarting ( no surprise that ... 6K is one fourth of 24K ... heh ).

By adding the silver, you get all of the base metals into alloy, and lower the base metals ability to protect the gold from the Aqua Regia process. You also lower the amount of acid required ( when you inquart, you can dilute the acid to 50-50 ).

The Aqua Regia process, without inquarting, is quite popular with the folks who recover scap gold from old computer parts and memory cards, as the gold there tends to be pure heavy plating. ... they'll cut the fingers off of old memory modules, and dump pounds of this into acid.

Be careful with this process, it generates a lot of extremely hazardous fumes.

Thats exactly what organized crime used to do back in the 50s and 60s. Steal gold coins, which are illegal to own (back then) and melt them down, pour out onto the ground, and presto, new nuggets that could be sold. They made lots of money ldoing that.

childs play. If they wanted to do something like this they should have hit The Golden Nugget Casino display in Las Vegas, Huge nuggets. They  would be hauling pounds instead of ounces. Also, there is a thirteen pound giant snowflake crystal looking nugget from Grass Valley California on display at another certain museum in San Francisco whose name escapes me as it was years ago I was there.

Careful.  In rural NC, the robbers, more often than not, wear badges and drive in gray/black cars that say NCSP or they could be county sheriffs or local PDs.

Be very careful. Conventional crime is low here, but badge-robbery is off the charts.  You see, in this region impoverished by free trade and illegal immigration, the .gov goons have extremely limited options for generating revenue since property values are low and since nobody's got any money, sales taxes are likewise low.

But, staffing, salary needs, healthcare costs, equipment maintenance and procurement, and pension costs are all up up up.

They look at their hips, see the gun hanging there. Then they look on their chest and see th badge of protection sitting there, and decide it's completely logical to use those things to get the funding they need for the aforementioned requirements that are all there to keep us safe. See. They 'protect; our freedom by taking it away.

Yeah, Applalachia has a long history of self-reliance and of saying 'fuck the man', but I wonder if the  CW didn't cull alot of those genes out and leave the "yessir mr officer whatever you say sir' gene pool in the majority.  Well that and the "as long as we go to church and vote republican everything will be alright; especially if we don't legalize gay marriage or cannabis" genes.

Cuz Fox News and my preacher say it's true, it is.

FYI.
