Alexis Tsipras Most Outrageous Outburst Yet?
Speaking in May 2014 (ahead of Ukraine's elections) new Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras made very clear why he is now against Germany's push for further sanctions against Russia.
[The SYRIZA] party believes that the new government in Ukraine came to power as a result of a coup, and call it a junta.

"We should not accept or recognize the government of neo-Nazis in Ukraine," the Athens News Agency quotes Tsipras who believes that the Ukrainian people should decide their future themselves.
Speaking about different peoples' movements for self-determination, Tsipras said that the European left respected the right to self-determination, but nationalism and clashes could not lead to positive results.
"We in the EU should not give preference to changing borders, but must respect the position of the peoples, who have decided to create a Federation within the state," said the SYRIZA leader.
Tsipras added,
the EU must change in order to survive; the EU lacks democracy, and citizens do not believe that their vote can change policy.

On 21 April 1967, just weeks before the scheduled elections, a group of right-wing army officers led by Brigadier General Stylianos Pattakos and Colonels George Papadopoulos and Nikolaos Makarezos seized power in a coup d'etat. The colonels were able to seize power quickly by using elements of surprise and confusion. Pattakos was the commander of the Armour Training Centre (Greek: ?????? ??????????? ??????????????, ????), based in Athens.
The coup leaders placed tanks in strategic positions in Athens, effectively gaining complete control of the city. At the same time, a large number of small mobile units were dispatched to arrest leading politicians, authority figures, and ordinary citizens suspected of left-wing sympathies, according to lists prepared in advance. One of the first to be arrested was Lieutenant General Grigorios Spandidakis, Commander-in-Chief of the Hellenic Army. The colonels persuaded Spandidakis to join them, having him activate a previously-drafted action plan to move the coup forward. By the early morning hours, the whole of Greece was in the hands of the colonels. All leading politicians, including acting Prime Minister Panagiotis Kanellopoulos, had been arrested and were held incommunicado by the conspirators. At 6:00 a.m. EET, Papadopoulos announced that eleven articles of theGreek constitution were suspended. One of the consequences of these suspensions was that anyone could be arrested without warrant at any time and brought before a military court to be tried. Georgios Papandreou was arrested after a nighttime raid at his villa in Kastri. Andreas Papandreou escaped to the roof of his house, but surrendered after one of the soldiers held a gun to the head of his then-fourteen-year-old son George Papandreou. U.S. critics of the coup included then-Senator Lee Metcalf, who criticised the Johnson Administration for providing aid to a "military regime of collaborators and Nazi sympathisers." Did they strong-arm Greece into voting with other FMs or did they hold a vote and forget to invite Greece? Seems like Tsipras hopes that Russia will bail him out. But does Russia have the money that Greece needs?! I reckon that it would be easy for the EU to call Greece´s bluff.
The Chinese may have the money Greece needs, but what would they get in return?
If Greece leaves the eurozone, and thereby also leaves the EU, and defaults on its debt I guess that Greece would no longer have access to international credit markets. I guess that China could help Greece in this respect. Thereby Greece would become very dependent on China. But I assume that the Chinese prefer that Greece stays in the EU. They seem to have planned for that. The Chinese state controlled company Cosco has bought the container terminal in the port of Pireus. The Chinese also intend to build railways from Greece to central Europe in order to facilitate more exports of cheap junk to Europe. The container terminal in Pireus and the railways in the Balkans should be worth less if Greece leaves the EU. So I assume that the Chinese prefer that Greece stays in the EU.
But perhaps Greece could default on its debt, stay in the eurozone and indirectly get access to the international credit market through China, provided that Greece supports Russia in the EU? That could be a feasible strategy if the EU can not kick Greece out of the EU. If Greece also can keep the regular financial aid they get from the EU, just like other poor members of the EU, I guess this would be the most attractive solution for the current government in Greece. If Greece leaves the EU I guess there will be no financial aid from the EU. The question is how much this financial aid is worth compared to the costs for servicing Greece´s debt. But I doubt that Greece is more useful for China outside the EU than inside the EU. I also doubt that Greece can be useful for China to any substantial extent. China´s exports to Europe does not depend on the port of Pireus.
My impression is that Greece has a rather poor bargaining position now. Up to 2010 the living standard in Greece had increased tremendously due to subsidies from the EU, borrowed money and Target 2 (buy imported goods and pay for it with other people´s money). But now the party seems to be over. There doesn´t seem to be any obvious easy solution to Greece´s problems. Russia doesn´t have any money. Both Russia and China have rather limited use for Greece, that´s my impression.
I wonder what would have happened to Greece without EU membership, EU subsidies and Target 2. Perhaps typical, corrupt Greek politicians would have bought votes anyway by borrowing money abroad and consumed the money rather than have built shipyards like South Korea. I guess that is probably what would have happened. But the amount of debt that would have piled up would probably have been smaller.
Greece is probably also not the only country which has run into problem because of irresponsible politicians who want to be re-elected at any cost and just don´t care if that means borrowing money that will be hard to pay back. It is a general problem that parties and politicians with no ideals other than winning the next election (and perhaps also do what you are told by lobby groups/campaign donors) tend to be irresponsible. Parties and politicians with true ideals may be harder to buy and may also be less inclined to buy votes if that contradicts the ideals. However, idealistic politicians often tend to be disconnected from reality. Politicians who are neither irresponsible nor disconnected from reality seem to be quite rare. In many countries irresponsible politicians who are controlled by lobbyists who want the society to work in at least some respects seem to rule. The United States is an excellent example. The US is ruled by a lobby that wants the US to work so that they can have a powerful tool against others. Other countries may be ruled be lobbyists who don´t care whether there will be anything left of the country in 20 years or not since they have no strategic use for the country in question.

Germany said that decision would depend on the situation on the ground, with any major new rebel advance demanding tougher sanctions.
Thursday's emergency meeting had been called after rebels launched an advance last week, disavowing a five-month-old ceasefire. On Saturday, suspected rebel forces shelled the major port city of Mariupol, killing 30 people. Since then, there has been intense fighting along the frontline, although the rebels appear to have held back from an all-out assault on Mariupol.
Washington, which has coordinated sanctions moves with Brussels in the past year, said it was not planning an immediate new announcement itself.
“Certainly, we welcome it; it's a positive step,” State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki told a regular news briefing.
“This is just a further sign that the actions of the last several days and weeks are absolutely unacceptable and that there will be new consequences put in place," she said

Changing borders, or mass migrations (inspired by austerity, war or otherwise), does not well fit into today's central bank based model (which burdens and penalizes labor and the meddling masses). Also impactful is the flow of capital, which is fungible fiat, but for some reason is more tolerated.
The only question to the investor how to profit on this event? Should we long or short Greece stocks?
