Unleash The Veto: Senate Passes Keystone XL Pipeline Bill

Tyler Durden's picture

Following Congress, The Republican-led Senate just passed The Keystone XL Pipeline Bill - as expected:

  • *SENATE PASSES BY 62-36 BILL TO APPROVE KEYSTONE, DEFYING OBAMA

Nine Democrats joined all of the Republicans who were present in supporting the legislationNow, it is time for President Obama to unleash The Veto Pen...

As WSJ reports,

The Senate on Thursday passed legislation approving the Keystone XL pipeline, moving the Republican-controlled Congress one step closer to a showdown with President Barack Obama over the long-stalled project.

After more than two weeks of floor debate, the Senate on Thursday passed the bill by a 62-36 vote. Debate on the legislation covered a range of topics, including prairie chickens, climate change and renewable energy.

Nine Democrats joined all of the Republicans who were present in supporting the legislation, which would authorize TransCanada Corp. , the company behind the project, to proceed even though the Obama administration hasn’t completed its review of the project.

The House and Senate must now reconcile Keystone bills cleared by each chamber before final legislation can be sent to the White House.

Mr. Obama has threatened to veto any Keystone measure Congress sends to him.

Well, fucking use it then, or STFU because threatening to use it is not the same as actually using it.

The struggle to recover 30,000 gallons of oil from a pipeline spill into Montana's Yellowstone River is expected to grind to a near-halt in coming days as warmer weather makes ice on the river increasingly dangerous, state regulators and a company spokesman said Wednesday. It was the second oil spill into the Yellowstone since 2011, when an Exxon Mobil pipeline break during flooding fouled an 85-mile stretch of the river with 63,000 gallons of crude. In a Wednesday interview, Montana Department of Environmental Quality Director Tom Livers defended preparations made by regulators for another accident in the wake of the 2011 spill. But he said the latest spill shows periodic company surveys of pipeline river crossings remain inadequate.

Why are all the news sources I can find for this story are all from liberal biased news rags such as the Huffington post, cnn, yahoo news, and the Winnepeg news?  Hmmm you don't think they could have an agenda do you?  I also like how  depending which site you go to the volume of oil spilled gets worse: Winnepeg - 30,000, Huffington post - 50,000, CNN 50,400. I am not saying that the spill is not a bad thing, but a train wreck occured with a bunch of oil tankers in towe and wiped out a small canadian town, Lac-Megantic, and killed like 60+ people. I would say I would prefer a bunch of dead fish over a bunch of dead people. I know the enviro types out there would prefer it the other way around....sick bastards....

What I wonder is if all these expensive projects like free tuition and Obamacare come into existence solely to create more Treasuries because of the severe lack of collateral.

Hey idiot: the government DOES NOT OWN the country.  The landowners do.  And if they want to sell it to continue to produce low-cost energy, then Obama should not be a DICTATOR and let them.

But go ahead and keep thinking that government should control everything.  It's working out very well so far.

Thu, 01/29/2015 - 17:57 | 5722221 pods
pods's picture

Okay, I see where you are going but in point of fact the government DOES own a huge percentage of the landmass of the US.

Even PRIVATE land might not be so private.

Private land is owned by the landowner (citizen), citizen is a subject of government.

It's all collateral to the bank that foreclosed on the actual government.

A latvian:  What about the landowners who do not want to sell.  Such as the native americans who do not want to allow the pipeline to cross their lands?  Not saying the pipeline is good or bad but what about the right of the landowner to say NO.

On the pipeline, will it by double walled?  The pipeline was to cross one of the most important underground aquifers in that part of the country.  Problem being that in the tribal areas reports were that a unusually large percentage of rain water percolated into the aquifer.

Forced sale of land for private industry is just about as wrong as it gets. It's one of the many many things SCOTUS has gotten very wrong over the years.

The government may not own all of the land in the country.

However utility companies can get a right-of-way for public interest powerlines and pipelines for water, oil, gas transport.  There is a cash payment to the landowner that they can use to buy even GOLD if they want to bury that on the property.

If there was not such capability then dumb ass latvians would keep the country in the dark ages using horses and cow for transport.

No, the dollar you spend on petro is in a fact worthless piece of paper. The fact that it holds any value at all is owed to the PetroDollar regime set up in the early 1970's shortly after Nixon closed the gold window. Our many military forays in that desert hell hole, playing ball with the Saidis, and derailing all common sense measures that would take us toward energy independence is all part of the scheme to prop us a currency backed by $18 Trillion in public debt and, arguably, $100+ Trillion in unfunded liabilities.

These folks are determined to build the stupid thing, so let them. Then when oil goes to 20 dollars a barrel, and the project gets mothballed, the politicians who wanted it can explain to their constituents what happened to all those 'jobs'. And why they are now responsible for repaying all the debt incurred during the construction. Because SOMEONE will have to pay, and surely it won't be the banks that lent the money...it'll be the dumb fucks who WANTED it built despite the current realities of the oil market.

Squeeze the State Department -- call whomever is working on it to Congress EVERY week to give updates

Do the Harry Reid -- basically ignoring Senate rules and doing what you damn well please -- Harry rammed through several things with just a simple majority vote

Attach the Keystone to another bill the Dems want to see passed

Re-work the langauge allowing Keystone to proceed entirely within the US (thus bypassing the State Department) - basically saying it can be built up to within 1 foot of the Canadian border.  Then wait for the next election.
